Tuesday, December 04, 2001 8:50 PM Dear Mr. Zwick, I am writing as a concerned citizen regarding the implementation of victim compensation for relatives of victims of the September 11 crash. I am a college student in Indiana. I was apprised of the current situation by People for the American Way. I am deeply troubled that in this time of mourning, the family members of some families are being denied access to the compensation that President Bush promised them. How would the American people feel about that? Whatever President Bush's views on alternative families, the life partners of lesbian and gay male couples should not be denied money on the basis of one perspective on the meaning of "family values." Now is the not the time to be arguing over the morality of homosexuality - now is the time for this nation to be unified; whatever the President's personal views, discrimination is not justified - and now less than ever. I call on the administration to take this opportunity to show compassionate conservatism - and repudiate homophobia; hopefully, President Bush's earlier statements in this regard were not made simply to garner the gay vote. Let us see his consistency by demonstrating his concern for all affected by this tragic attack on America.
