Monday, January 28, 2002 11:55 AM Comments Dear Mr. Zwick: Although recent news articles indicate that many people are not familiar with the proposed rules of the fund and are therefore criticizing the "greed' of the victims' families, I want to say that I have read the proposal in detail and I believe it is MORE than fair. In fact, I am appalled that these families may even receive that much of my tax dollars. What has come of our society, that people believe they must be ?compensated? for the loss of a loved one? Certainly there should be some way to help those who lose the means to earn a living, but to the tune of hundreds of thousand to millions in tax-free dollars? Social Security includes a provision to help a person if they become total disabled and unable to work ? losing their source of income. It only provides benefits of less than $20,000 a year in most cases. Most of these beneficiaries lost their ability to earn through no fault of their own ? why are terrorist victims valued so much more? I understand the purpose of the fund is to head off lawsuits that could be even more damaging to the economy, and the right to sue for ?compensation? is another issue as well. For now, I hope the government will stand firm in this plan, reduce any awards as indicated to account for life insurance, etc., and even consider lowering the amount to be paid as a whole.
