Sunday, December 23, 2001 1:20 AM Compensation Fund-why? I am a law abiding, tax paying citizen. I don't understand why our government should feel the need to "compensate" for Sept 11th's victims' families for the "loss of salary and pain and suffering"? and to have the compensation so high (into millions of dollars per victim) and to base the compensation on age and earning capabilities. Shouldn't human lives be valued the same? Or are we judged by our "earning potentials"? The truth of matter is people die of various reasons all the time. What about the families of the victims of the Oklahoma bombing? What about the military personnels who die in the line of duty or those who died as result of "Gulf war syndromes". What about the people died of Anthrax and on and on... Are the families of these deaths getting the same millions? I think not. I don't mind our government helping out victim families. But it must be fair! 1) compensation should never be based on age or "earning potentials! It should be based entirely on number of dependents (under age of 22 to include college education) left behind. Helping out dependants is a humane thing to do. But I just don't see the validity in giving money to victim's sisters or brothers or parents. Why should they stand to gain monetarily? 2) funds such as "free money" should not be in the millions! I can see giving out a few hundres of thousands to help out in the short term but millions from our tax money is just too high and too unfair to other victims who got little help from the government. This fund needs major amendments.
