Tuesday, November 06, 2001 11:38 AM From my viewpoint After reading an article in The Kansas City Star and noticing that public comments are welcome, I believe: Compensation should be reduced by the amount that victims' families receive from other sources. The playing field should be leveled for the lower-paid segment of victims who were limited to lesser salaries, pensions and perhaps could not afford insurance. An appeal process should be in order, but compensation for attorney fees of disgruntled recipients should not be paid. Why make the attorneys wealthy by this tragedy? The money available should go to the victims and not be diluted by exorbitant payments to lawyers (and they do charge exorbitant fees). If overly huge compensation payments are made in this first tragic event, how can we afford to continue to make overly huge compensation payments to future victims of terrorist attacks? Let's be realistic and make reasonable payments to victims' families. Who knows what is around the corner and what other expenses this war on terrorism will cost the public.
