comments on 9/11 victims compensation

I hadn't heard about this place for comments until after the deadline, or I surely would have commented sooner.

While I care about the victims of the 9/11 attack, I think it is a HUGE mistake for the US Government to compensate survivors of war victims. This is the job of charities and insurance companies, and for the federal government to set this precedent is misguided and incredibly dangerous, opening a Pandora's box of sorts.

Personally, our family donated far more to charities toward those affected by this horrendous tragedy than they could ever expect to recover from our tax dollars. (I believe our gift was equivalent to about an eighth of our annual income tax bill.)

Americans care. They care that needs these met responsibly. They will respond generously. But I, for one, do not want my government going into the business of negotiating the worth of the lives of victims of this or any other tragedy.
