Treat Families of GLBT 9-11 Victims Fairly
Dear U.S. Dept. of Justice,
Is the Federal Government scared to do the right thing? OK, so perhaps
you need to verify evidence of an existing, committed relationship on a
case-by-case basis before you can compensate the surviving defacto
family members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT)
victims of the 9-11 attacks. On the other hand, legally married survivors
of 9-11 victims don't have the burden of proving the significance of their
relationships, even when most of us have heard of sham marriages before.
I have heard that the federal government is even willing to overlook the
existing laws when it comes to compensating family members of illegal
aliens who died in the 9-11 attacks. But you're afraid that states which
don't recognize domestic partnerships are going to sue the federal
government if you compensate the families of GLBT victims who were
residents of those states? WHAT !!!
The suffering of these survivors is as real for them as it is for the
members
of any other families who lost someone in the 9-11 attacks. Please do the
right thing !!
Thank you,
Individual Comment
