fair compensation
Special Master Kenneth R. Feinberg
September 11th Victim Compensation Fund
U.S. Department of Justice
950 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20530
Dear Mr. Feinberg:
I was given your name and contact information by the Flash Activist Network, a special subscriber service of Working Assets, from whom I buy long-distance telephone service. They requested that I cc them to help track responses.
As you go about the important task of overseeing the distribution of government funds to the survivors of those killed or injured in the September 11 attacks, please consider the following issues:
- As the poorest families would stand to gain the least under traditional systems that award compensation in direct proportion to a victim's earnings level, setting a high minimum compensation level would help to reduce this imbalance and give poor families much-needed relief.
- Doubtless many gay and lesbian couples and families were directly affected by this tragedy. Please do what you can to compensate for the fact that established gay and lesbian couples do not have the same access to marriage enjoyed by heterosexual couples. This clearly can have important ramifications for compensation where one partner has been killed or injured. Please give consideration to how legitimate, established gay and lesbian couples and the children they may be raising can be assured a fair share of the compensation.
Thanks very much for considering to my comments. I wish you the best in the execution of your duties.
Sincerely,
Individual Comment
