911DA Story: Story

I was administering ISTEP (Indiana's Standardized Test) to my students. A parent called stating "Mrs. Schiller, airplanes have just hit the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and one is headed for the White House." I broke out in goosebumps and tears began to flow. My students became concerned about me and wanted to know what had happened. I remember being torn on what to tell them. I reassured them that I was okay and encouraged them to continue their testing. During lunch break, we told our students about the attacks. The rest of the day was spent talking with and counseling our students.

On the way home, I noticed cars stopped on both sides of HWY 62. It took a few minutes to realize that people were in line to get gasoline. Every gas station was full, with lines spilling into the streets. One station had raised their price to $3.85 a gallon. It astonished me how quickly panic had set in.

Once home with my family, we sat together and watched the attacks on television. We just had a group hug and prayed for the victims, their families and our country.
