911DA Story: Story

I was student-teaching in a fifth grade class when my supervisor came in and whispered in my ear that we were being attacked. I had no idea what she was talking about. I went to the school library and sat down and stared in awe as the events of 9/11 unfolded. I had just visited the Twin Towers less than a month prior. I knew people that worked there and i knew someone who worked at the Pentagon.
I had to go back to my class though and act as calm as i could in front of 25 fifth graders who could in no way grasp what was happening. I remember driving home and crying the whole time.
I moved to NYC in 2002 and taught in the Bronx for two years. I learned that my students had actually watched the buildings burn becuase you could see them from the fifth floor of the school.
I will never forget that day.
