911DA Story: Story
The morning of Sept 11th I was on the 9th floor of the Naval Hospital Great Lakes. I am an E5 and run the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic here. I also was 8 months pregnant and my son had dropped that morning so getting around was extra difficult. As it turned out that was my last day at work for 8 weeks. I had been in my office when a friend came running by yelling "Something has happened to the world trade center." Pretty much the whole staff and patients were glued to the TV as the tragedy unfolded. I remember feeling overwhelmed and a sense of "how could this happen on American soil?" I am proud to be a member of the United States Navy but have always thought that if I were to be called up to defend my country that if would not be on our own soil. That morning as things were so unclear I did wonder what kind of world I was brining my son into.
That next day my water broke and Jacob Cameron Kimball was born on September 13, 2001. Admist all the tragedy all I could do was look into my sons eyes and think "Thank God for small miracles."
Jacob is now a year old and I know what to say when he asks me "Mom what was happening when I was born."
