911DA Story: Story

I was conducting individual English assessments on second grade English Language Learners. I was out in a trailer, when my mom called me on the cell phone and told me. It was still early and what had happened was very unclear. She was in a panic and wanted to rush to my own children's school and bring them home.

My collegues and I tried to discreetly catch bits of information from the television when students were out of the classroom and we watched the events unfold before us.

As a Muslim-American I can't begin to tell you the grief, shock and sense of utter betrayal that I felt as I began to learn that Muslims were involved in this horrifying attack. It was several weeks before I allowed myself to sob uncontrollably one early morning in my quiet trailer. I went to candlelight vigils and a memorial service for a local 12-year-old passenger who was onboard the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. I tried to make sense of it all, to no avail.
There's so much pain and suffering around the world, much of it due to the greediness of powerful countries . . . so I think I understand the frustration and anger felt by so many of the world's oppressed - including those in the Middle East and especially Palestine. But I feel so betrayed by the few so-called Muslims who have hijacked my religion and twisted it in such a way as to be able to carry out this monstruous and barbaric act. I don't understand God's plan here, .
