911DA Story: Story
If, as we were told it would, the plane that went down in Pennsylvania had hit the White House, I would have spent the past five years fighting off nightmares. Either my colleagues and I would have been among the casualties, or we would have witnessed something akin to armageddon. Thanks to a few decisive and selfless people on flight 93, all I saw was a late (it didn't happen until noon) White House evacuation.
To this day, when I see footage of the second airplane hitting the tower, I shake my head in disbelief. I still can't wrap my brain around the event.
I now work in a building with a view of the side of the Pentagon that was hit. I also can see National airport. I watch and hear planes take off and land every few minutes and wonder how this could not happen again.
