911DA Story: Story

I was at work and my boss's wife called to tell her husband "a plane crashed into the World Trade Center." He responded that it was probably a small private plane and went into a meeting for the morning.

By the time he came out of his meeting at noon, the Towers were down and the world was in chaos. My husband came to meet me for lunch and we sat huddled together in each other's arms in the car, listening to the radio. Food was forgotten and we felt like children clinging to one another for comfort. But there was no comfort; only loss.

A good friend who drove for the Port Authority had been lucky enough to have the day off on 9/11, and we still weep when we see the photos of us together at the Statue of Liberty, with the WTC in the background. There's a sense of blissful ignorance to those photos, not knowing that in a couple of years, everyone's lives would be totally different.

I was lucky in that no one I knew was lost that day. But my heart still aches for those who did.
