911DA Story: Story

A friend called me to tell me to turn on the TV. She had seen on TV that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center and she knew that my husband had family in New York near the city. I could not shut off the television that day. It all seemed so surreal. I called my husband at work to tell him what was happening and they turned radios on in the plant where he works. I tried desperately to reach our family members to make sure that everyone was ok and was finally able to get in touch with them late in the afternoon. We are making our first trip home to NY since the attacks in a few weeks and I'm sure that it will feel very empty to not see the Twin Towers gracing the skyline of Manhatten. I still tuck my children in each night and pray to their guardian angels to keep them safe. In rural North Dakota we used to feel relatively safe but this has made me realize that terror can strike anywhere. AT the same time it has strengthened my resolve to not let fear cripple our lives.
