911DA Story: Story
On the morning of 9/11, I kissed my husband goodbye for the last time. He called after the first plane hit to tell me he was OK, he said he loved me and the kids and that was the last time I heard his voice. When the second plane hit his building,I was scared but hopeful that he would escape. When I was told the building fell, I fell to the floor of the dining room where I was feeding the children and said "Oh my God, he is dead." I began hyperventilating and felt numb all over. The rest of the day is a blur of feeling so cold and trying to warm up in the sun as the fighter jets flew overhead. I spoke to so many people who hoped I had gotten word from him, but I never did. People tried to make sure I was OK and took care of the children, but I was not OK. I just wanted him to come home. I sat on my front steps waiting for him to walk around the corner from the train, many did come, but not him. My husband Thomas of eight years, the father of our two children (2 and 4 months) was gone. I had known him for 22 years, began dating at 13, we had grown up together, what would I do without him...
