911DA Story: Story
I was at work in Howard, SD when my boss's husband came in and said that one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit by a plane. We had no TV so we turned the radio on and it was all over every channel. At first no one knew it was deliberate and then the second tower and then the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania crash happened and I couldn't think. I am a NY native and I have all of my family and friends there. I was most worried about my aunt who works in the city. She watched it happen and was covered in debris but she was ok. I couldn't focus and I couldn't wait to get home and turn the TV on because when they said the towers had fallen, I didn't believe it. Then I saw it. I still didn't believe it. Luckily I did not lose anyone close to me but I know a lot of people who did. Someone was with us last summer because we visited NY on August 11th after having moved the trip back. We had originally planned to be there on September 11th. It is also our wedding anniversary so lots of mixed emotions. Shortly after the attacks, we got a puppy and we named him Manhattan...Manny for short. We have a shot of the twin towers that my husband took while we were there and blew it up big and it stands tall on a shelf in our living room. This isn't a sad story or a touching story or a heroic story but it's my story and it's proof of how even though we were all the way out here, it hit hard.
