<text>José Santos was raking the leaves in front of his Woodhaven home when his neighbor rushed outside to tell him that a plane hit the World Trade Center. José, who worked as a starter in the building, rushed into his home. He turned on the television, then picked up the phone to call coworker John White, who was in the basement of the North Building.
'I was scheduled to go into work at 12 PM. So I asked John what I should do. Should I come to work or what? He tells me that everything is chaos. I should forget about going to work. I'm talking to him, and I see the second plane hit on T.V. I couldn't believe it. I thought it was an instant replay,' José said. That was the last time he heard from John White. 'I don't know what happened to John, he's missing. And James, the guy I usually relieve is also missing. Just a couple of hours later and it could've been me,' José said.
Shaken by what he saw on television, José's attention quickly turned to his wife, who was at work in a building directly across the street from the World Trade Center. 'For two hours, I didn't know if my wife was alright. She wasn't able to call me until after 11 [AM],' José said.
José was at work in the tower in 1993, when terrorists bombed the building. 'I helped put that place back together. We cleaned it, and helped get it in order. Now it's gone, and so many lives have been lost,' José said.
As a starter, someone who works to insure that the elevators run, José knew hundreds of people by sight, if not by name. José's role as the organizer of the football and baseball pools also makes him a popular guy known to many.
'Guys who called me to save boxes [in the pools] for them are gone. No more boxes. No more Super Bowl. No more nothing,' José said, with sorrow etched on his face.
Trying to move on in the wake of the horrific tragedy, José and his wife are working to help others. They have donated food to feed rescue workers. José has been working the phone bank to reach 32BJ members who work in lower Manhattan. The local is calling members to be sure they are safe and to offer support.
'There were hundreds of 32BJ members over a thousand people -- who worked in the World Trade Center. They were cleaners, starters and security,' José said. 'How will they find jobs? How are people going to take care of their families? This is such a tragedy. It's too enormous to understand.' </text>

'There wasn't any work there (in Italy). So I came home,' Sal said. He landed a job at the World Trade Center.
'On the day of the crashes, I was working in the lobby. When the first plane hit, I was out in the truck dock. I went into the lobby to see what happened. We didn't know if it was a bomb or what,' Sal said.
'After the second explosion, the chandeliers shook. There was smoke and flames coming out of the elevator shafts. It was awful. I evacuated as fast as I could. I was on Broadway when the first tower came down. My eyes couldn't believe it. Such a waste of life,' Sal said. </text>

<text>Both of my brothers are firefighters in New York. My older brother was driving to the scene of the first fire, when he saw that the building was going to come down, and he had to turn the car around. My older brother went down the site soon after and burned his eyes from the air. My brothers are both working overtime since 9-11. There is a great deal of paperwork to be done for the many firefighters who lost their lives. Many gifts are pouring into the fire dept., but there is no clerical help. My younger brother is volunteering at the site on his days off. My family all live in NY, and I couldn't wait to get back there for Thanksgiving to give them all a big hug. New York has been through a lot. We should not have been sleeping all these 10 years since the Gulf War. I had no idea we were still bombing them. I had gone on a news fast. How far away everyone was once. Now I pay attention to the news every day and I write letters. If I have an opportunity to demonstrate, I will do that, too. I protested the Gulf War. We cannot bomb a country and then leave it for blowback. We need to be smart in these things and not say, 'It doesn't affect us.' It does.</text>

<text>Prior to any suggestions from myself (Benefit Funds Manager of the 1115 Benefit Funds) or any other leadership, I am proud to say that our staff took the initiative to raise money and coordinate the gathering and distribution to local firehouses for delivery into NYC a number of leftover (and outdated, given our merger with 1199) 1115 T-shirts, rain ponchos and the like from our storage facility.
Rather than leave our building for a religious service as suggested by President Bush, they have organized a service here on premises at noon today. Our staff has lost friends and family in this tragedy, and has had family emerge from the Towers, alive but emotionally scarred. In response to my own daughter's reaction to the tragedy, I wrote [this] piece and have shared it with a few friends and family.

My 14 year old daughter's eyes well up with tears, her lips trembling, her face reflecting her heart's sorrow, the pain she feels for a classmate's grief, the death of his father atop the World Trade Center. An innocent's sense of security, of inviolability, of America's safeness, eviscerated by Evil's explosion, fire, smoke, thunder, a shower of paper falling from the sky, caught in the wind's waves, myriad slivers of glass sparkling in the brightness of the perfect late summer morning. A second, even more horrific and thunderous explosion, as tons of streaming steel slice through the second tower, jet fuel igniting and incinerating all in its path. An innocent's tearful eyes. A mother's heart breaking, unable to know words that can truly relieve, offering but a warm embrace, enveloping her in her empty shield. The horrors intensify. An earthquake's rumbling, molten steel girders collapsing, glass, steel, concrete imploding, a mushroom cloud of dust and debris, caught in the concrete canyons of lower Manhattan, a blistering blast following the contours of the city's corridors, chasing fleeing people, frightened, confused, seeking refuge, minds' racing, asking why amidst fragmented flashing images. A young man next door, working in a building neighboring the Towers, egress blocked by debris, climbing over concrete and steel and body parts to escape, scarred, bawling in his mothers arms when finally making it home, having trudged, dazed, through the city, over the bridge and into Queens, dust-covered hair and clothes, leg bloodied, suit pant torn. A coworker's brother, home, survivor of the first blast 8 years ago, again surviving, his office 8 floors from the first point of impact, having walked down 70 flights of stairs, feeling the second impact in the Tower next door, its effects bursting water pipes, flooding the stairwell, fleeing upward from the 4th floor back to 7th before finding a dry stairwell moments before breaking a 7th floor window seeking escape, running, one block away before the Tower collapses. Another co-worker losing a friend, a passenger on one of the flights. What terror did she endure before fire and force extinguished her life? Rescuers crushed, ensnared in the tumbling rubble; few escape, telling stories of horrors seen and heard and felt; others but a legacy of courage, families widowed and orphaned, lives forever broken. And the innocent, her tears controlled now, sleeps fitfully, awakens, reluctantly dresses for school, attending school for a time, yet a school nurse calls home, 'please take you child home, it's like a hospital ward here, with children's illusions shattered to the core!' Carloads of children returning home 'sick', seeking the safety of home, the nest. Grieving still. Grieving forever. An innocent's life changed forever, one of how many, a generation of children. America forever changed. How do we respond to our children's grief? To their shattered illusions? How do we respond to the world? </text>

<text>Local 32BJ member and Shop Steward Arlene Charles was on the 78th floor of the World Trade Center when terrorists crashed a plane into the building. 'It got dark and smoky. I couldn't see nothing. Stuff was falling and in the air. So I hid under my desk,' Arlene said.
'The windows in the hall blew out and the smoke started to clear a little. Then I hear this lady screaming, screaming hard. I looked around the desk, and I see Carmen on the ground,' Arlene said, referring to coworker Carmen Griffith. 'I told Carmen, Come to me! Crawl over here to me.''
When Carmen made her way to the desk, Arlene realized that her friend was severely burned. 'Her face was so red, all her fingers peeled, no skin left. So I got a guard to help me get Carmen to an office where we could help her,' Arlene said. Suffering from second-degree burns, Carmen complained that she felt as if she were still ablaze. Arlene and the guard poured water on the wounds.
'I told Carmen we had to get out. So me and Audrey, she works for the Port Authority, we took her down Staircase A,' Arlene said. The women flanked Carmen, tucking their arms beneath hers to give the injured woman support as the trio made their way down the 78 flights of stairs.
'For some reason, my cell phone was working. My cousin called me while I walked down with Carmen,' Arlene said. Relieved to find that Arlene was still alive, her cousin begged her to leave the building immediately. 'I told her, Just tell Granny and Auntie and everybody I'm okay. I gotta go. I gotta get out of the building.'
Arlene continued down the seemingly endless stairs, struggling to assist her friend who still suffered from excruciating pain. Near the 40th floor, two men moved in to help the women. One took off his shirt, soaked it with water and put it on Carmen's face to help relieve the pain. Both men then helped Carmen make the rest of the trip down.
'When we got outside, they said they were taking Carmen to Brooklyn. The ambulance was full. So I couldn't go with her,' said Arlene. In the days following the tragedy, Arlene called hospitals until she was able to find Carmen. She also called hospitals in search of Carmen's husband, Arturo, an elevator starter who also was injured in the tower. 'I told them they both made it.'
Echoing the sentiments of so many 32BJ members who worked in the buildings, Arlene described her coworkers as her family. When asked why she risked her own life to save her friend, Arlene said, 'I couldn't leave her there ... burned ... crying ... crawling. My heart couldn't let me do it.'
Having escaped unscathed, Arlene is more impressed by the miracle of her survival than her own heroic actions. Arlene's young sons, however, were moved by their mother's bravery. 'They know Miss Carmen. They're so happy and proud that I helped Miss Carmen,' Arlene said.
Reflecting on the tragic event, Arlene reminisces about the glory and grandeur of her beloved World Trade Center. She talked about the countless tourists from around the world who visited the edifice every day. 'This a building people will never forget even if they don't build it back,' Arlene said before heading off to file for unemployment benefits.
Read Carmen's story. </text>

<text>SEIU Local 1984 Joins National Relief Effort To Help Terror Victims
CONCORD -- The union representing service employees in New Hampshire is mobilizing members to provide relief for victims of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
State civil servants, county and municipal workers, and private-sector employees are being asked by their leaders to contribute to a fund set up to assist hundreds of their brothers and sisters who worked in the World Trade Center and Pentagon. The union began the fund-raising drive with a contribution of $7,021, or one dollar for each dues-paying member.
Service Employees International Union or SEIU locals represent New York state employees, janitors, security officers, building engineers, window washers, and tour guides who worked at the World Trade Center. In addition, a number of SEIU health care workers who responded to the attack are listed among the casualties after the twin towers collapsed.
'We recognize the horror that the terrorist attacks have inflicted on all victims and their families,' said Tim Decker, president of SEIU Local 1984, the State Employees Association of New Hampshire. 'We have a special affinity with the public servants who worked in the World Trade Center. This includes the many firefighters, police officers and emergency medical workers who put their lives on the line in the face of overwhelming violence.'
The union notes that a critical need exists for trained and experienced counselors to provide grief and trauma counseling to victims, witnesses and families in New York. SEIU urges members who can make themselves available to provide that assistance to e-email contact information to reliefseiu@seiu.org. </text>

<text>Arturo Griffith was in a freight elevator when the building was attacked. The elevator dropped to B1 (the basement level), fell below the landing. He was trapped in the elevator beneath debris and unconscious. He remembers seeing a beam of light. He called out. The smoke was so thick; Arturo could not see his own hand. So his rescuers had to follow his voice to find him.
'I don't know who saved me. It was so black and smoky. I couldn't see nothin',' Arturo said. 'When they got me out, I told them there was someone else down there, a woman. They went back to get her. Seconds after they pulled her out, a ball of fire came down the shaft. They almost got killed.'
'I couldn't walk. When they were getting' me out, I tried to stand up three times, but I kept fallin'. I didn't realize that my knee was fractured. When I got out of the building, I wanted to go back in to find my wife. But I was on a stretcher. I couldn't move.'
Arturo's wife, Carmen Griffith, was also on an elevator that morning. Having just dropped off 6 people at Cantor Fitzgerald, Carmen's elevator was on the way down with several passengers in tow. Suddenly, the entire elevator shook. The car stopped on the 78th floor. The doors would not open. Carmen and the passengers pried the doors open. When Carmen stepped out to check the floor, a ball of fire rolled through the hallway.
Carmen dropped to the floor and rolled about in an effort to extinguish the flames. Onlookers helped to douse the flames with their jackets. Carmen suffered 2nd degree burns on her face, head, legs and arms. 'Another worker helped Carmen get out,' Arturo said.
'Arlene Charles helped my wife walk down the stairs. Carmen has asthma, so it wasn't just the burns. With all the smoke, she couldn't hardly breathe. Arlene got her to the 40th floor. But Carmen couldn't walk any more. So, firemen took her the rest of the way down. When she got outside, she wanted to go back in to look for me. Thank God the firemen wouldn't let her back in the building. They took my wife to Long Island College Hospital. It was a while before we knew we were okay.'
Speaking from his bed at St. Vincent's Hospital, Arturo talked about his thoughts during the disaster. 'When I was in the elevator, I saw death in front of me. And I was sure that my wife was gone. I didn't think that I would ever see her again. I thank God for saving me and my wife.' </text>

But, then again I am only human.
I wish we were as innocent as a newborn baby, and as loving as children at play. I wish I could be all of these, without wishing my life away! I wish everyone could be more of a friend than an enemy.
