He directed people to leave, helping them to avoid the falling debris on the plaza. He saw seven people hit the ground after they jumped to escape the intense heat of the fire. 'They broke into a million pieces,' Analdo said. 'I never seen anything like it not even in Vietnam.' Analdo ignored instructions to stay put that were broadcast over the public address system. As he left the building, a piece of metal fell from the sky, almost killing him. 'I decided that the metal almost took my life; so I would take the metal. It was very hot. But there was a chef's hat on the ground next to it. So, I used the hat to pick it up. It wasn't til I got home that I realized it was a piece of the plane,' Analdo said. Analdo fled the area as quickly as he could. 'I ran and didn't stop running until I got to the Brooklyn Bridge,' Analdo said. When a low flying jet hovered above, the hundreds of people on the bridge cowered, afraid that another terrorist attack was imminent. Panicked people jumped into the cars of strangers in an effort to get out of Manhattan. 'One guy jumped on the hood of a car because he wanted to get out,' Analdo said. Hours later, Analdo finally got home. 'I'm just glad to be alive. I don't have a job, but I got my life,' Analdo said, echoing the sentiments of many workers. SEIU Story SEIU Story: Story As told by another 32BJ member: Carmen Griffith, an elevator operator at the World Trade Center, was on an elevator that morning of the tragedy. Having just dropped off six people at Cantor Fitzgerald, her elevator was on the way down with several passengers in tow. Suddenly, the entire elevator shook. The car stopped on the 78th floor. The doors would not open. Carmen and the passengers pried the doors open. When Carmen stepped out to check the floor, a ball of fire rolled through the hallway. Carmen dropped to the floor and rolled about in an effort to extinguish the flames. Now, a few day later, Carmen's face and hands are very badly burned. Her hospital room is overflowing with flowers. When Ernesto (photographer) and I arrived, it was packed with vistors too. Carmen has a large, extended family. And many of them came by while we were at the hospital. When Carmen and her little sister embraced, both were overwhelmed by emotion and began to cry. Carmen told us that she is in a great deal of physical pain. Talking with her made it clear that she also is hurting emotionally. As she described what happened to her, her leg began to shake. The more she got into her story, the faster her leg moved. The entire bed shook -- it seemed like she was ready for lift off. And her eyes widened and welled up with tears. Although she didn't cry while speaking with us. Her husband Arturo's account of what happened to Carmen differed a bit from Carmen's. The ball of fire ripped through the elevator, not the hall. As Carmen explains it, they heard a blast and the fire blew out a side panel of the elevator car. She and the passengers pried the door open. She said, 'People went under me and over met to get out.' Carmen turned to look behind her, and that's when the fire flashed into her face. Carmen said she pulled off her jacket and used it to smother the flame on her face and hands. She got out of the elevator and began to crawl. Her eyes were closed shut. 'I couldn't see. I thought my eyes were burned,' she said. At this point, Arlene Charles began to call to Carmen. Carmen followed Arlene's voice. Arlene took Carmen into an office wher Arlene and others poured water on Carmen. The burns were so severe that Carmen felt like she was still on fire. Arlene and another woman, known to Carmen only as Audrey, helped Carmen down to a lower floor. (This incident began on the 78th floor. Carmen wasn't sure of which floor because she could not see.) Along the way, someone poured a gallon of water on Carmen. 'It felt so good,' she said. And the water gave her the resolve to continue down. At some point, two men, who Carmen said were not firefighters, carried her the rest of the way down. Carmen did not say that she wanted to go back in after her husband. However, I did not ask her is she in fact wanted to go back in. She said that she was sure that her husband was dead. She had heard that a freight elevator was hit. And she said, 'I just knew that Arturo didn't make it.' Carmen is 45 years old. She is the mother of four children (ages 13 to 27). Her 22-year-old son also was at work at the WTC durin the attack. He is a 32BJ member who does landscaping and outside maintenance work. He survived the attack with minor injuries. Carmen is a shop steward who worked at the WTC for 21 1/2 years. Her husband worked there for 27 years. 'I knew everybody,' she said. 'I loved working there. I worked at that job six days a week. 'The World Trade Center was my second home. The people were my second family. I loved it there,' Nagjija said. She was scheduled to work at the time of the terrorist attack, but she called in sick that morning. 'I work up high. I could've been killed.' As a Moslem, Nagjija is outraged by the suggestion that the senseless act of violence may have been perpetrated in the name of Islam. 'I hate what the terrorists did. They did it for politics, not for God or Islam,' Nagjija said. 'So many people were hurt or lost, all kinds of people of every religion. This is such a great tragedy. My friend Edwin lost his son,' Nagjija said referring to coworker Edwin Zanbran who was in the building the day of the attack. While Edwin escaped, his son is a missing. Twenty-six 32BJ members have yet to be found. 'I don't know where I will work now. But I'm happy to have my life, even if I don't have a job,' Nagjija said. The commitment I see from the members is such a confirmation of why I so strongly believe in unions. Unions are so fundememtally important in at this time when a sense of community seems harder and harder to connect with. The Dept of Revenue, Local 150, leadership is actively engaged in an aggressive campain to involve the lower paid workers in their agency by doing one on one contacts with ten identified work areas. The activists are introducing themselves, and finding out what the workers need. Pretty basic stuff, but often shyed away from by leaders because you have to put yourself and your beliefs out in the open. The general membership is responding, over 30% of their members attended the monthly meeting (thats about 200 members), members unannomously voted to send 500.00 dollars of their treasury funds to the SEIU relief fund, the leaders have set up collection cans through out their complex for folks to make ongoing donations to the SEIU Relief Fund, and the local has plans to revisit another 500.00 dollar pledge next quarter for when the attention of the public might start to waver. The families will need help long into the future when right now they can't imagine their needs. I am speaking from experience as I lost my father, a State Police Officer, in 1967. The fact that people who have never met give what they can to strangers in need is so reassuring. SEIU Story SEIU Story: Story 'I heard a big thump like a construction grate hitting the ground,' said Gabriel Torres, a 29-year-old security person at the World Trade Center. 'All of the sudden, people were running all over. They told us a plane hit one of the towers.' Gabriel was helping people evacuate when two firefighters asked him to help them navigate through the building to find people in need of assistance. Gabriel took the two men to the underground Path train area. They were in a parking lot beneath building one when the ceiling began to fall. 'We got trapped under the debris. We dug our way out. We just kept digging til we saw light. But then we were stuck,' Gabriel said. The three men called out for help, but had to wait for two hours to be rescued. 'I had a hole in my leg. I could see the bone. My head was hurt. Both my elbows are hurt and scraped. I got four or five stitches on my forehead. I gotta use [a] cane to walk,' Gabriel said. As he talked about the devastation, Gabriel's face darkened. 'Too much, too much,' he said. 'I was on the phone with my mother right before I went downstairs. I told her to tell my wife I love her. Then I told my mother that I love her. Then I had to go. I didn't know if I would ever see my family again,' Gabriel said. 'Yesterday (9/16) was my son's birthday. He turned two. We baptized him yesterday. We had it planned, so we went ahead and did it. Life goes on.' Now Gabriel worries about how his family will make ends meet. Gabriel's wife has a job with the school board, but her paycheck falls short of the family's expenses. 'When we lost the buildings, we lost our jobs,' he said. 'I usually work on the concourse, but I was in the basement, charging up my radio and getting some supplies, when the first plane hit,' Ivan said. 'The impact was so great, everything just paused. I looked up and waited for the ceiling to collapse. When I saw the whole building move, and the walls were still standing, I thought the ceiling would collapse on us. So, we all threw ourselves under the tables. 'My supervisor and I helped a worker out. He was so badly burned. It was terrible. He had no skin on his face or his hands,' Ivan said. 'My wife is 8 months pregnant. I found a phone outside to call home. That's when I found out it was a plane,' Ivan said. Prior to speaking with his wife, Ivan thought that terrorists had bombed the building. Upon discovering that a plane crashed, Ivan thought it was an accident. When the second plane crashed, Ivan knew that terrorists had struck. 'We saw the other tower get hit. Everyone was crying. We already knew that we were losing people. Even though my wife wanted me to come right home, I couldn't leave until I found out what happened to my coworkers,' Ivan said. He looked on as the first tower unexpectedly crumbled. 'It came down so fast, like a big cloud of smoke was coming at us. I started to go in the building (Chase Manhattan 1), when the blast blew me in the doors. The air was heavy, so heavy you couldn't breathe. Finally I took my chances and left to go home. When I came outside, it was like it snowed inches,' Ivan said. Ivan's wife also worked in the building. With husband and wife out of work, and a baby due in weeks, the young couple worries about their future. 'We just signed a lease on a new apartment before this happened. Now I don't know if we can afford it,' Ivan said. Despite his own problems, Ivan has been working to help other 32BJ members. He volunteered to serve on one of the teams of union members and staff who visited the families of members who are missing. The teams offer the families support and assistance. 'I just want to help,' Ivan said, fighting back tears as he talked about the difficult visits. SEIU Story SEIU Story: Story Like so many immigrants to the United States, Nafija Lekic works hard as a maintenance worker who cleans offices. Until the day of the attack on the World Trade Center, she worked at the 225 Liberty building -- just a stone's throw from the towers. 'I was very proud to work [near] the famous World Trade Center. My building where I work is another home for me. I've worked there for 15 years -- since 1987. I love that building and the people I work with,' Nafija said. Nafija came to New York from Montenegro, Yugoslavia, with a two-year-old son in tow, in search of the American dream. 'Always, it was my dream to become American,' Nafija said. 'I came here for free religion, for better education for children, and for a better life.' As an ethnic Albanian and Islamic woman, Nafija's life in Yugoslavia was very difficult. She was unable to practice her religion openly for fear of persecution. Now she fears that the brutal assault on the World Trade Center will irrevocably change the city and country she loves and calls home. 'People come here from all aver the world to leave trouble. Where will people go, where will we go, if things get bad here?' Nafija asked. In the wake of this unprecedented disaster, nearly 2000 members of Local 32BJ face the temporary or permanent loss of their jobs. Nafija has to support three sons, ranging from 10 to 21 years of age. 'My oldest son studies psychology. I cannot read or write English, but my son is in college,' Nafija said, brimming with a mother's pride. Unemployment benefits will not be enough to meet her financial responsibilities. 'I have children to feed, bills to pay. They say we could be out of work for six months, maybe a year. I don't know what I will do. But I am happy to be alive. I cannot complain, not when people suffer so,' Nafija said. Her face darkened and her eyes filled with tears as the conversation turned to those who are missing or dead. Nafija nervously twisted her 'ha jab' --the lavender cloth covering her head in observance of her religious beliefs. 'This is not human! Believe me; this is someone evil,' Nafija said, referring to the terrorists responsible for the World Trade Center disaster. 'What I know from Islam, Koran, you would not kill even a fly. No one who believes in Islam would do this . . . this evil, evil thing.' 'No matter Christian, or Buddhist, or Moslem, or what you are, this hurts us all. This hurts everybody. The whole world has changed because of this.' In the face of the increased anti-Islamic prejudice sweeping the country, Nafija remains steadfast in her commitment to practice Islam openly. 'I will not change. I came here to America to be free. I will wear my ha jab. I will pray five times every day. My religion is me,' Nafija said. 'We have to love each other. I hear a lot of hate and anger now. But now we need peace. We all need each other if we can go on.'
