I remember being in my English class when my teacher got a phone call saying that something terrible had happened. She put the television on, and it was devastating. I could not believe what I was seeing, and I still can??t. The looks on the faces of my fellow classmates were depressing, as in sad. One of the students in my class left as soon as he got the news, because his dad was on the ??American Airline?? flight that had crashed into the Pentagon. After class, everyone in the hallways were crying, hugging each other, or talking about the event. I just didn??t know how to react and show my feelings towards others. I was too shocked. As the days went by, people started to be more patriotic than before. Students stood up with honor to say ??The Pledge Of Allegiance?? for all the people who died, and also for the families who lost a loved one. People wore Red, White, and Blue, a lot more, and respected one another. As for me, my neighbor was one of them who were killed at the Pentagon. It was dreadful, because I only saw him on that very morning before going to school, and the next thing you know, he was gone forever. I really miss seeing him everyday when I come from school. And it was horrifying hearing about what had happened to his body. One year has gone, and it seems like it had just happened yesterday. I thought that the government would have officially made September 11th, a day for remembrance to all the people who died, and for all the people who worked hard to get things done. Hopefully, this event will be, or is already ??HISTORY??. People would be reading about it and studying it, like how we had learned about ??Pearl Harbor??. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I work a late schedule, so I was still at home that morning, getting ready for work. One of my housemates was watching tv around 9:30am and he called me into the den. The first image I saw was both towers on fire, pouring smoke into the sky. Time seemed to stand still for a minute as my brain tried make sense of what I was seeing. I thought, "they struck again", meaning the terrorists had again attacked the Trade Center. I assumed that it was like the first attack back in 1993(?), with a car bomb in the underground garage. It was a minute or so before the tv reran the planes hitting. I was in shock. This can't be happening. I was immediately glued to the tv for the rest of the day and saw all the other things as they happened--the towers collapsing, the Pentagon, the other plane crash, the fear of other hi-jacked planes. The whole county seemed in chaos as Bush and Cheney were whisked off to secret and secure places. I called my office at Georgia Tech in downtown Atlanta around 11am to say that I probably would not come in because the local news said that traffic was chaotic with people fleeing the city. They said that Georgia Tech was being "evacuated" by order of the governor. Then, on the local news, they were listing all the downtown Atlanta buildings that were closing for fear of another plane attack. It was just unbelievable. I kept thinking about Pearl Harbor and how similar it seemed. I stayed up after midnight watching tv. Only the Hispanic cable channel showed the most horrific scenes: the video of people jumping from the burning towers. One body after another tumbing all the way down to the sidewalk. It was nightmarish. The entire day was a life-changing event. It made so many things seem so trivial and frivolous. Some cable channels had yet to take off their insipid infomercials, so it was bizarre to switch from CNN coverage of the carnage to a 30 minute program hawking Victoria Principal skin moisturizers, QVC jewelry, or chicken rotisseries. I'm 34 and consider most of my generation to be lost in a daze of consumerism, materialism, and pop culture amusements. I hope that Sept. 11 made some people reexamine their priorities. Shortly after my students got to their classroom, while I left to retrieve something from another floor, another staff member told me a plane crashed. On my way up, someone said "you need to see turn on the T.V."I heard someone else say "the WTC is gone." I went upstairs and shared the news with the other teachers in my room. I left the room again to call my boyfriend since no one's cell phones were working. He was awaiting my call desperately, he was being called in to duty. He told me we were in a state of emergency, and that I should try to make it to my mother's place in Spanish Harlem and not come home. He promised to call me. I told him I was to remain at school till all the parents came and that my kids were still unware of the news. Parents began streaming in, tears falling from their eyes as the tightly hugged their small children and took them home. The children in my special education class, sensed our anxiety and sadness and began to ply us with questions. What was happening? Why were the parents coming so early? Was it a half-day? I simply said the train was out of service, which was true because I didn't want to frighten the kids. We took small lunch breaks and as I and another female co-worker walked through the streets we were overwhelmed by the eerie sight of no cars, not a single one on the street, people running, the radios blarring very war-like minute by minute news. "A plane hit the Pentagon." "The Pentagon has been struck." Acrid smoke and dust filled the air. It was terrifying, someone had attacked us. After work, when all the children had been picked up. My co-workers and I departed, trying to figure out the best route to our homes when the trains and the buses weren't running. On a Manhattan street not one car, nevertheless a taxi was too be found. Sirens filled the air. Signs posted everywhere begged us to come donate blood. I walked down 23rd Street, heading East. All the pedestrians at the corner of the Flatiron building stood gawking South, one said "That's where the WTC USED to be." I felt a raw gush of emotion. A couple of blocks down, soldiers wearing camouflage stood in the middle of the strees holding the biggest guns I have ever seen in my life. What were they missile launchers? They had legs, these guns like a tripod for a camera. I stood transfixed our worlds had been turned upside down. My pager went off, my sister was calling me. I stood on line to use the nearest phone. Strangers were hugging each other, others were taking pictures of the armed soldiers. I finally caught a bus going uptown. The ride from 23rd St. to 122nd St. took over three hours. A lady on the bus told me I had beautiful eyelashes, were they real? I thought it such an odd comment/compliment but weirdly it made me feel good, as if everything was normal. At mother's place I began to worry. I had not heard from my boyfriend for a couple of hours. I was already on the phone to the Red Cross when he called on the other line, he was at Ground Zero. He was running when the last building fell. He was okay. He would call me back. At two a.m. he was relieved of duty, He came to my mother's home to get me. We drove down deserted streets, we were allowed to leave the borough when he flashed his badge. At home, our machine was filled with messages, from family members, ex-girlfriends, concerned friends. The next day school was closed. I was glued to the T.V., I watched news all day long. It was a day I will never forget, ever. The memories are as singed into my head as the remnants of what used to be a symbol of the grandeur of NY are now. We were going to my 1 yr. checkup after my daughter was born. My appointment was for 9:00 am.-the ride is about 1/2 hour from Bradford. I remember walking in the doctor's office to find the radio on very loud, and the nurses standing in shock. I had just heard about what happened. My husband went for a ride with our kids while he waited for me. I was scared because they were starting to shut down highways and main streets to airports and railways. I didn't have my cell phone. I couldn't get in contact with him. I still went through with my checkup, and after I was done, my husband was waiting outside the door for me. I told him what was happening-but he already knew, listening to the radio. I kissed them all. We raced home as fast as we could. We didn't know what was going to happen next. We stayed home for the rest of the day together. I wanted everyone to remember those who gave their lives, not at just this time but always. I started a campaign to have 9-11 made a national holiday. I called it "Fallen Heroes Day". I created a web page called Fallen Heroes Day. It had a logo of the American flag with the picture of a firefighter super imposed over it. I contacted every person on every level in government, state and city office. I contacted all the news media TV, papers, radio and even the NY sport teams. I communicated with hundreds of people on the Internet. The people on the Internet were all in favor and wanted to know what they could do to help. I relayed to them about my web page and asked them to pass it on to family and friends. The results I received from the political sector were form letters thank me for writing to them, and that they would look into it. I than (this is in a time frame from September to January) had a little luck, I was contacted by Ms. E. Cameron, WWORTV (in Brooklyn channel 9) to do a segment called "View Point". I went to work at the State Capitol in Jefferson City, Mo on September 11, 2001 at 8:30 a.m. Later that morning when I heard about the September 11th tragedies, I realized that losing my oldest sister was far more acceptable than what had occurred to all of those poor innocent people who never would have expected such an evil thing to happen. You see, my family and I had been expecting for my sister to die for a very long time before she did, but what happened on September 11, 2001 was totally unexpected and shocking. Tell us your story: I was sitting in my health and social care lesson with my new class, I had only just met a lot of them and i was wishing that I could be anywhere else in the world. I remember looking out of the window wishing that I was still on holiday In florida. The lesson went really slowly and the teacher kept talking about something happening in America but she wasn't sure what had actualy happened so we just carried on. At the end of the day I had to wak into the town centre to meet my mum to pick up the cat from the vet as he had a operation. When we came out of the vet I remember complaining about having to take the cat on the bus to get home, my mum told me to stop complaining and get on the bus. She didn't normaly snap at me like that soI asked what was wrong. She said tha she couldn't beleive i had asked that question after what had been on the news, I looked at her with a confused look on my face, I asked her what she meant, I had't heared any news. She looked at me puzzled! You don't know what happened today in America? She asked as we sat down on the bus. No i replied my teacher told us something had happened but she wasn't sure what it was. My mum explained it all to me but i couldn't understand it. I had never really witnessed a terrorist attack on tv before so I didn't know what to expect when I turned the television. I cried for ages after that. I felt really sick It was on television all night. I went to bed feeling so lucky, my life seemed so much easier all of a sudden. Nothing that worried me was as bad as what all the families of the victims were feeling. I didn't sleep all night I sat awake thinking about all the people who were trying to rescue people and I thought about the people that had family missing or dead. I will never forger that day, ever. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at home that day, online checking email, when I came across a story about a small plane crashing into the WTC. I didn't think much of it; I figured the pilot must have had plane trouble or taken ill and was unable to land. I turned on the TV and a few minutes later I learned of the second plane and then it hit me...this was no accident. I stared at the TV set, shaking and crying. Then I got a call from my dad in Chicago where he works that he was coming home early and he needed me to pick him up. I was horrified. Since I was a child I always wanted to fly in a plane as much as I could. For years as a child I wanted to be a flight attendant and my favorite airline that I wanted to work for so badly was United. Now I wonder. I am going out on a limb here, but what if I had pursued my dream job? Where would I be right now? Perhaps I was lucky that my destiny changed and I found another career interest. After reality hit me about what happened to something very close to me (i.e. career in flying, planes, etc.)and the death of so many people, the anguish overwhelmed me so much that I cried for days. I immediately called my church office to see if we could have a prayer session that evening. We did and I cried there too. On September 11 I had an appointment that I missed and because of the anguish I totally forgot about it and didn't finally realize until two weeks later that I'd missed it. I fortunately did not lose someone directly on that dreadful day, but the sorrow was and still is overwhelming. I cannot begin to imagine the pain the families of victims are suffering. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was taking ISTEP tests at an alternative school program in southern Indiana at the time the planes hit the towers. I was exhausted after the testing, and had to be at work in a few hours, so I was planning on getting home to take a nap. I had turned the radio up as loud as I could stand it and President Bush's voice was blaring. Not knowing anything that was happening, my first thought was, what did he do now, and I immediately turned the station. When I again heard news coverage instead of music, I began to listen. There was a man on his cell phone in Washington D.C., talking about the attacks. He mentioned another airplane flying very low. Standing on his rooftop, he had an unobscured view of the capital. Suddenly, in the middle of a sentence, his voice cracked. You could hear his tears in his voice as he said, "Oh my God! A plane has just hit the Pentagon! The plane hit the Pentagon! Oh my God! The captial is under attack!" My blood ran cold, my heart stopped. I thought, this can't be happening. I was terrified, and angry as I listened to the coverage on the radio. By the time I reached the town I lived in, there were vehicles lined up at the gas station. There was panic and confusion. My first thought was of getting home to my children. Once home, I called into work, and stayed home, curled up on the couch with my kids, watching the towers fall repeatedly as the coverage was replayed. I am not religious, at least not in a Christian sense of the word, but that day, I prayed to God. And watched as the numbers escalated, flags were hung, and families searched for their loved ones. Seeing that the shop was full of people and many more were standing outside looking at the TV's on display, this pulled my over to see what the hubbub was all about. Getting closer I could see that many people were crying, crying right there in the street, not knowing why, my friend and I pushed slowly to the window to be stunned at what was unfolding. On hearing my friends accent so many people there came to her and expressed their condolences. We did not know at that time, but through the night and following days it was discovered that someone from Perth was killed that day too. Just one of the many people who's lives where cut short that day. The visions scarred into my memories forever, I had to write this. To the innocent who died and their loving family's who miss them dearly. Also to the New York Americans who have to build their new foundations. Our original flight was for Monday the 10th, but all our plans were pushed back a day. Originally, we were to dine at Windows on the World on the 10th, 7:30 reservations, and the next moring (the 11th), I was going to TKTS in the WTC for show tickets. But with our plans pushed back, we were in the Tampa International Airport on the morning of the 11th, with our reservations for dinner on the 11th for Windows. I remember we arrived at the airport early, and were at the gate awaiting our friends Jim and Gloria who were traveling with us. We saw our plane arrive and unload the passengers comming from La Guardia. Jim came walking up and said to me "We aren't going anywhere today, a plane just hit the World Trade Center". I thought he was joking, and told him "Yeah, right, tell me another one", to which he replied, "I'm not kidding". I then starting looking around the terminal, and everyone had a shocked, scared look on their faces, and there was a kind of feeling, I can't explain. His wife then came running up and said, another plane just hit the other tower (she stayed in the bar watching tv while he came and told us). All four of our phones started ringing, our parents, friends, and children were calling. All I could think about was the 50,000 people who worked in those buildings every day or visited them. The loss of live would be staggering. There was a gentleman sitting behind me who must have heard our conversation. He tapped my on the shoulder, and said "Excuse me, but did you say a plane hit the WTC? My son works in Tower 2. I said yes, and he calmly picked up his phone and started to dial it. After speaking on the phone, he make another call, sounding like he was recording a message on an answering machine and said that his son decided to work from home that day, and he spoke to him, he is fine, but was concered about his friends and coworkers, and to leave messages for him and his wife, they would return all phone calls. He hung up the phone, and started crying. The airline announced that our flight would be delayed, and they would make an announcement with any further information. After a few minutes, we decided that there was no way any flights would be taking off that day and decided to leave the airport. The remainder of the day, I watched the news in shock, crying for those who died. We never rescheduled that trip, but we have flown and been to NYC since without fear or hesitation. I have not visited the site of the WTC, but will go when the memorial is built to those who lost their lives. I have a different outlook on life now; trivial things do not matter any more. Life it too short to worry about little things. Also, I tell my husband I love him every morning before he leaves the house, and at the end of every conversation. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was another mundane day...I went to work...I worked in small office, a Dot.com company failing but struggling not to fail. There were five of us: Dom, Tony, Mary, Vlad and me (Karen); we had just moved into this location from Springfield, NJ to save money on rent...little did we know. Anyway, Dom and I proceeded to get into some argument; usually I am pretty even tempered and seldom get into arguments, but today, just felt edgy. We had a radio, but Dom took a phone call and he said that he was just told by the other person that the WTC was hit by a plane...we turned on the radio...it was upsetting...none of us could concentrate on our work...then we heard that a second plane crashed into the South Tower; we knew, then, that this was not mere accident, but planned and intentional evil. I do not remember at what point we heard about Washington and Pennsylvania. Vlad, Mary, and I decided to search for a television and we found a bar (which was actually closed--but the owner let us in to watch TV) and we saw together the falling of the second tower. We went home, but since I had a second job in the afternoon, that office was less interested in our shared state of mind, so I had to work. Needless to say, the Dot.com, which did a lot of business by mail, quickly slid downhill, despite our efforts to keep it afloat. I will not forget that day, and I am still angry. And the other day on "60 Minutes" they were interviewing Muslim teenagers at a school in New York, who believed "paradise was a place where all your needs are taken care of, like you people who want to go to the Bahamas"; well, my idea of paradise is where people like them don't cause harm to others because we have different beliefs and lifestyles, where there is no pain and suffering. I've decided that while I still believe strongly in God, I have little use for religion, if this is what part of, or a least part of, what causes these kinds of travesties to happen. Our headmaster relayed the tragic news to us over the intercom. While we had a break after first period everyone was circled around the TV and we heard the fighter jets flying overhead. Exactly one year later during senior year on September 11, 2002 I happened to be sitting in the same classroom, in the same exact seat. Partners had split...five years with the other partner going nowhere and someone hired to help me wanted my job. Opportunity came up with the NYC Transit Authority and I took it giving my employer notice and that my appointment would start September 17th. Second week of the interim between jobs contained September 11th....I drove into NY throgh the Tappan Zee Bridge, got my new car inspected in the Bronx, drove up to White Plains NY DMV to find it closed, back again to the Bronx to my girlfriend...unable to drive out by car...used my last subway token. I truly did try to volunteer for emergency communications duty...telecom systems were scrambled...and I still had a mess to return a car to my old employer. Decided to make preparations for September 17th Subway School...fifty of us graduated...and one year later, most of us are together again. We are the new Car Inspectors of the NYCTA Car Equipment Division. Older guys, experienced, wiser and united as a team. We inspect, maintain and repair the subway fleet...providing transportation for five million passengers everyday. The BEST decision in my fourty eight year old life ever...I work for those souls lost upon September 11th as well as those who lost employment. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: At about 8:40am, I turned to cable TV Channel 11 to listen to my favorite morning program called, 'Life in the Word'. Instead, there was a news bulletin hastily being conducted and stintingly presented by reporters who had to keep saying the same thing over and over because their news sources were being deluged, but so little was yet verified. Then suddenly, distant video images of the tall WTC building with smoke coming out the top and side of it. My phone rang. It was my husband calling from work with instructions to turn on the TV. I told him I was watching it, and hung up to call a nearby friend to let her know. As I witnessed the people running away in terror in NY, I knew I was viewing an awesome tragedy. The people were trying so hard to run as fast as possible, yet look behind to see if the building was falling on them. It DID fall on many unable to exit fast enough. All I could say was, "Oh no, oh no!" as I helplessly watched another airplane fly straight into the second tower. As I began to pray for the families of those whose loved ones were in that airplane, the whole first building suddenly collapsed. It seemed to happen so quickly for such a large building. Hours were like minutes and minutes were like seconds. I began to pray protection for our President, who was himself now in an airplane. I was so thankful to hear that the President did not have to decide to shoot down Flight 93 because it crashed when heroic passengers rushed the terrorists. I was so thankful that even though they got part of the Pentagon, they didn't get the White House. I was so thankful that emergency procedures were being carried out by all in authority. I was stricken with all the bulletins, before my TV set, in my home, and it wasn't a movie...it was really happening. I went to my church to pray with others. I was convicted of what it is to pray without ceasing...for those bereaved. I thank God for my home, my husband, my children and most of all, my country. I may have lost none of these in the 911 tragedy myself, but I might have were it not for my country. Today was the very sensitive 1 year anniversary remembrance ceremony. Tastefully, they took THREE HOURS...THREE HOURS to remember the names of those who died in the 911 attack. They started reading at 8:30am and ended at 11:25am. The reading of the Gettysburgh Address was so extremely appropriate and our President was resolute. Terrorism will end...America will end it.
