I had 4 days to finish my master's degree thesis and was holed up in a box-room, cut off from the outside world with the intention of finishing my work on time.The phone rang. My friend & housemate Iain had called from work to tell me a plane had hit the World Trade Centre. Ive been there. I was lucky enough to visit New York City as an 18 year old. I stood at the bottom of the World Trade Centre and looked up in awe.I'll never, ever forget the sight. You can't explain to someone who hasn't seen it, just how those great buildings soared into the sky. endless and truly, truly breathtaking. I had tv pirctures on in the box room, along with radio comment.We've an excellent talk radio station here called "radio 5 live". A DJ called Simon Mayo was on air at the time.Whenever I see Images of that day on TV now, I can still hear his voice. I didn't do any more work that day. Not a thing. I tried, but I couldn't stop listening, or watching. I heard testimony from an "expert" on the radio that the buildings couldn't collapse, they were protected against such attacks. But collapse they did. I love New York. It changed my life, having visited the city as an impressionable 18 year-old, I feel cheated now seeing the skyline on tv without the towers. But I'll come back, as soon as my financial situation allows. I'm hoping to become a police officer here in Britain. It's my life's ambition. When I imagine myself doing the job, I sometimes think about how I would have reacted in such a situation. The truth is that I dont think I would have coped at all. The officers of the NYPD demonstrated courage that should make the people of America proud, and should be used as a benchmark for all police officers all over the world to demonstrate bravery in the face of adversty. I wish your country well & I wish your people well, but I wont preach any further because the terms "your country" and "your people" dont do justice. we're with you. We love your attitude & resiliance, and we will live to tell our grandchildren about the events of september 11. But by that time, it will be a victorious tale. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: This is a hard thing to explain, but I will try. At the time I was stationed at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas NV. I didnt worry too much about anything really. The Air Force was just a job for me. I got up in the morning and I put my uniform on and went to work. Then I came home took the uniform off and did it all over the next day. To really understand what went thru my mind on September 11, 2001 I have to go back to September 7, 2001. That Friday was a mandatory fun day for my squadron. We were at Freedom Park on base. I remember that it was a beautiful day. I did something stupid. I decided to play flag football. Well I ended up dislocating my shoulder. Really messed it up too; took a surgery and a total ten months of rehab to get it back to normal. Well any way I was taken to the hospital and got help. Because of the medication I wasnt allowed to work. At the time I joked that it was hard way to get an extra long weekend. Well I pretty much had all of Monday off because of the meds. I decided that I would go back to work on Tuesday the 11th. So I made an appointment to turn in my medication and go back to work. Well the apt wasnt until 8 am so I could sleep in a little. I got up as usual and put my uniform on as usual. Just took a little longer than normal is all. I got in my truck and headed to the Hospital. The Federal Hospital at Nellis is across the street from the main base. Well I wasnt on the road for more than a few minutes when the song that was being played was stopped in the middle and the DJ said some had happened in New York at the World Trade Center. I changed the radio to the all news am station. It was like bad dream. I couldnt believe what was going on. It didnt seem possible. When they said the first tower had collapsed I was in total shock. By the time I got to the hospital things were already starting to get ugly. The second tower had fallen and I also heard about the Pentagon. The local Force Protection Level had been elevated to Bravo. When I got my medication turned in finally I headed for the door to go back to work and do something. I didnt know what I could do with my arm still in a sling, but I was going to get to work. I just made it out the door when the Force Protection Level was elevated to Delta (the highest level). I just made it out before the entire building was locked down. I wasnt about to stay at the hospital any longer than I needed to. When I got on the road and got in the turning lane to enter the base I discovered that traffic was at a total stand still. I realized that the base was locked down as well. No one enters or leaves. I saw over the fence that the base Security Forces were geared up and armed up as much as they could. SO I pulled out my cell phone and called work and asked what I should do. They told me they didnt know. So I said This is what I am going to do. I am going to go home and wait by my phone. If you need me to come in on a night shift call me there, at least that way you will know where I am. I sure as hell wasnt doing any good sitting in a traffic jam. So I pulled out into traffic and counted myself lucky that I did it while I still could. On the way Home I called my Parents and told them I was ok and that nothing bad had happened in Las Vegas. I told them that I loved them and I would call them latter. So I went home and waited by the phone, and I watched it all happen on TV, Me sitting there in my uniform and my arm in a sling. I felt so useless that day. It made me sick to my stomach. I didnt sleep that night at all. I kept thinking my country needs me and I am useless to my country. My father worked at the Trade Center on the 62nd floor and he survived. Our car was stolen the night before and the morning of the attacks the cops took so long to come to my home to take the report on the car being stolen that my father was late to go into work. I drove him to the train station that morning and at exactly 8:46 AM my dad was about to get out of the car when on the radio they said a plane had hit the Trade Center. Within ten minutes of dropping my dad at the station(he thought it wasnt anything serious and still wanted to get to work)i relized hearing all the stories on the radio I saved my dads life by not putting the car alarm on the night before. Driving home minutes after the first plane hit the building I saw people crying on their cell phones car's stopped in the middle of the street, and people getting out screaming I relized I would never forgot exactly everything I heard and saw that day. Still a year later I can remember everything and it's so sad to me. For everyone who died and their family and friends they will always be in prayers. I'm British by birth, but I moved to Washington, DC when I was about 18 and settled there for the next 17 years. I married an American and had two lovely daughters. Then the opportunity to work in the UK came up, and we took it. Watched capable moving men carefully wrap my furniture and pack it into a container, found a house in a pretty English village, piled onto a plane and began our new lives here. That was in October 2000. Almost a year later, I was having lunch with two work colleagues. It was a glorious day . . . bright sunshine, clear blue skies. We had a lovely meal at a nearby seafood restaurant . . . clam chowder, mussels and a bottle or two of Sancerre (amazing the things you remember). On the drive back, my cell phone rang . . . it was a former colleague and friend in the States . . . she had a series of strange coincidences to tell me about a mutual friend of ours, and while we we were chatting she said . . . "oh, and by the way a plane flew into the World Trade Center this morning." Just like that. No horror. No fear. Just . . . wow! We assumed (like almost everyone who wasn't there and didn't actually see it) that it was a light aircraft. We laughed about our mutual friend . . . ended the conversation with a promise to talk some time the following week and hung up. Ten minutes later she called me back . . . this time her voice was strained . . . and we were both frightened . . . another plane had hit the second tower . . . it was as though the world slipped suddenly sideways . . . as if the ground had just shifted under all our feet. We had just pulled into the parking lot . . . I practically sprinted into the building and up to our office so that I could log onto CNN and see what was going on. We have family and friends in both New York and Washington . . . I had to make sure my "familiars" were alright. My laptop desktop was bristling with IM chatter . . . friends on both sides of the Atlantic were frantically trying to get my attention to tell me what was going on. My brother (in Charlottesville) was clearly frightened . . . a plane was circling the White House, a plane had crashed on the Mall, a plane had crashed into the Pentagon . . . I tried to reach our families . . . I got through briefly to my mother-in-law, but we were cut off and after that all the circuits were busy. I called my husband and told him to turn the television at home to CNN. The news kept coming . . . Tower 2 had collapsed. People were jumping. I still hadn't seen a single image, but I felt overwhelmingly frightened . . . attacked, under siege. Then my boss said something chilling . . . "they hijacked airliners . . . with people on them." The rest of the day is a blur. I sat there at my desk unable to function. At about four o'clock I went home . . . I cried all the way home, cried and sang America the Beautiful. George, my husband, and I watched the BBC and CNN coverage until late into the night . . . sobbing, frightened. For weeks/months we cried. I think I cried every day for four months straight. Silly things set me off. We bought a flag. I went to the American embassy in London to sign the condolence book and wept in the arms of a U.S. Navy Captain. An Afghani man came up to me, weeping too, and apologized over and over again. The sea of flowers around the memorial to Roosevelt . . . the flag . . . the Marine honour guard . . . the lone piper who showed up and played Amazing Grace and then left. And then I came home . . . briefly . . . in December to bring my stepson back to the UK to spend Christmas with us. I was sideswiped by the deluge of emotion I felt as the plane touched down at Dulles . . . and when I walked into the Immigration hall and saw the enormous flag and the words "Welcome to the United States of America" I broke down again. I stood there for a long while with my hand on my heart just looking at that flag. September 11th for me, though, was the day I realized how much I do love the States . . . until that day I'd have told you I didn't HAVE a home. I'd lived somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic for so long . . . not coming from or belonging to either place . . . the UK or the States. What a fool I was and what a pity that it took something so wicked to show me otherwise . . . I have two homes. How lucky I am . . . and how lucky we all were, our families and friends, to emerge intact . . . at least physically. Tell us your story: a friend called me at home and said to turn on the tv. as I watched in horror at the spectacle unfolding before my eyes, disbelief washed over me. I watched throughout the night, into the next day. Then, I realized "stop". I turned my attention towards the thousands of people pouring into ny city to help. the red cross was overwhelmed with donations. exhausted firefighters, policemen/women, emergency workers, the average american, search and rescue dogs, all struggling to help. I focused on the good. The many efforts to help, console, dig, whatever they could do. I was always proud to be American, but now even more so. I always sing the Star Spangleled Banner with pride for my neighbors at the Moose Lodge and Elks Club. Now, when I sing it, it is more poignant. For, even though I always felt every word of the song in my heart, for many, it had become almost rote. That has changed, and now, when I sing the Star Spangeled Banner, people cry, not tears of sorrow, but tears of joy at the realization of who we are and what we have. I didn't lose a blood family member, friend, coworker, anyone I knew personally. But, I did lose sister and brother Americans. I always felt we are one people, the human race. And if there is a reason this had to happen, I think to myself of the resolve that came out of this, people coming together with one voice, one nation, one heart. War on any continent is unspeakable. Tell us your story: all of the inspectors had been greeting the public that day, making sure they were helped to cast their votes..when a few of us heard ..well it sounded like a car crash, but from a distance!..we didnt pay too much mind to it at first. a man with a transistor radio came in to vote and told me that a plane had hit the world trade center..at first i just looked at him like you gotta be kidding!..i then went out side and people were kinda schuffling out side and talking about the plane..I walked to my friends house and there was only one station on television.I couldnt believe what i saw..and only moments later as we watched the second tower get hit. my friend and i were screaming ..i couldnt believe it "all the people, in there" I wasnt totally out of it untill i heard that the pentagon was hit as well..that's when I was truely afraid..I thought we were all dead! I thought where is our government?..I then went as fast as i could go to the bus stop, to get my son outta school..he goes to school located down town brooklyn, not far from the bridge..I couldnt believe the smoke it reminded me of a london fog horror movie ..the smoke and debree were intense.I got my child and we hitched hiked back home I only had 5 dollars on me and all the atm's were down..a perfect stranger handed me another 5 dollars to help me and my son get home..the only car service in the area was loaded with people waiting their turn to get a ride to their homes..i had asked a man in a red car to please take my son and I home and i payed him the 10 dollars. later on..and after trying to call into manhattan,because my daughter attends high school there.mayor rudy..opened up train service ..I then went and got into manhattan...going over the bridge it was hard to see anything,and not because of the smoke but my tears wouldnt stop..I keep thinking about "all those people" i got to my daugters school to find out that had released her..even though i called and told them to keep her there .and i was coming for her..she had signed a log to where she was going..and she was alright..on the way home and finally getting into a bklyn bound train I was in the subway when building 7 fell..we had to be rerouted back uptown..well it took 5 hours to get back home ...I'm grateful that I was able to get back home...so many werent so fortuate! My friends brother Ruben Esquilar who worked for futuristic trust which i believe was on the 96th floor didnt make it home!.The next two days my daugter and I volunteered in the armory. on lex. ave.I couldnt go back another day the mass amount of families and friends of the missing were phenomonal. but I remember 1 elderly woman who just gave out white roses! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Geographically, I live approximately 200 miles from NYC and yet I was personally affected by these tragedies. The Whitney Point Rescue Squad was one of the volunteer departments that went to NYC to offer their services to give relief to the rescue workers that worked around the clock in the days that followed the tragedies. As a Pastor I was called upon to offer a prayer and blessing to the men and women that volunteered to go. When I arrived at the fire station, I felt compelled to offer the men and women the option to be anointed with oil as I offered a blessing on each one. They all accepted and I was moved by the emotions that were displayed as I moved from one person to the next. We can never discount the possibility that God will use us to fulfill His purposes. Having felt that I was too distant to offer help, God opened a door for me to touch a few lives that would be in a position to touch so many others. Like any other day I was at school, it seemed like a good day. I was unusually on time and I looked really cute that day. I went to my first period class and things went fine, little did I know what was really going on in the world. The bell rang for me to go to my next class. As I was walking down the hall I saw my best friend with a panicked look on her face. She told me that two planes had flown into the World Trade Center buildings. At first I didn't believe her. Then I saw more people who were talking about it as I headed to my next class. Luckily my next class was government so he was letting us watch the news on T.V. For me it seemed like everything was in slow motion. As we were watching they were showing tapes of the second plane crashing into the second building. To me it still didn't seem real. At the end of that class I was able to go home because I had early release. As I went to sign out at the attendance office I saw they needed help. The phones were ringing and kids were trying to call their parents. So I decided that I would stay and help. I stayed for about two hours and then when home. On my way home it was so quite outside. Hardly any cars were on the road. I stopped by my house to check on my pets and they I headed to my sisters house were the rest of my family was. Their everyone was glued to the television with a look of terror on their faces. It still didn't seem real to me, everything was still in slow motion. I am one of those people that if I didn't see it, it didn't happen. So we watched the news all night and all day the next day wondering what was going to happen next. I will never forget the sea of cars the just stopped in the middle of the road as we all watched in horror. People just stood on the turnpike watching - it was eerie. As my work insisted that I come in - I got to watch things from a different angle as my office faced the World Trade Center. The smoke was billowing and alarms were sounding and watching that hidous smoke rise that was when I knew our world had changed. I hope that everyone effected finds the solace they need. September 2001 in New York City, Washington und Pennsylvania, mit klugen Analysen der Katastrophe, ihren Ursachen und m?glichen Folgen und mit Leitartikeln von Verfassern, die viel kl?ger sind als ein alter Teute in Texas und denen ich nichts Schlaueres hinzuf?gen kann. Aber ich dachte angesichts der Reaktionen von einigen Bundesbr?dern und Freunden in Deutschland, dass Euch vielleicht einige pers?nliche Aspekte und Bemerkungen zu den Geschehnissen interessieren, nachdem wir uns hier etwas von dem ersten Schock erholt haben und langsam sehen, welche Gr?ssenordnung und fatale Bedeutung die Ereignisse und Erkenntnisse der letzten Tage f?r unsere Zukunft und die Weltgeschichte haben. Als Wahlamerikaner seit 22 Jahren ? immer noch mit deutschem Pass ? habe ich wie viele Menschen hier in dieser furchtbaren Woche aus allen Teilen der Welt Anrufe und e-mails von Freunden, Verwandten, Kollegen und Klienten bekommen, die entweder wussten, dass meine Tochter in Manhattan arbeitet, oder die nur ihr Entsetzen, ihr Mitgef?hl und ihre spontane Solidarit?t bekunden wollten. Zugleich ist es unglaublich, wieviele Bekannte, Nachbarn und Gesch?ftsfreunde hier im fernen Texas direkt von den Ereignissen an der amerikanischen Ostk?ste betroffen sind, weil sie Freunde oder Verwandte haben, die bei den Terroristenangriffen umkamen, verletzt wurden oder um Haaresbreite entkommen sind. F?r mich waren die zweieinhalb Stunden am Morgen des vorigen Dienstags, w?hrend wir verzweifelt auf Nachrichten von meiner Tochter warteten, die wohl die schwersten in meinem Leben. Nun sind wir aber, um das vorauszuschicken, eine gl?ckliche Familie im Gegensatz zu so vielen anderen in diesem und vielen anderen L?ndern der Welt. Unsere 28j?hrige Isabel arbeitet bei der Commerzbank in New York Manhattan als Assistant Treasurer, und zwar im Hochhaus des World Financial Center 2, drekt neben dem World Trade Center. Da es jetzt mit seinen ca. 60 Stockwerken das zweith?chste der verbliebenen Geb?ude ist, sieht man es auf den Fernsehbildern deutlich direkt an der Wasserfront. Sie war kurz vorher in ihrem B?ro im 34. Stock angekommen, als sie die erste Explosion h?rte. Vom Fenster sah sie direkt gegen?ber die Flammen aus dem Nordturm des WTC schlagen und Menschen aus den Fenstern fliegen. ?ber Cellular Telefon erfuhren sie und ihre Kollegen, dass es ein Flugzeug war und wahrscheinlich ein Terroristenanschlag. Kurz danach sah sie sah dann das zweite Flugzeug genau auf ihrer H?he auf sich zurasen, und es sah so aus als ob es ihren Geb?udekomplex direkt treffen w?rde. Ohne den Einschlag abzuwarten, rannte sie zur Treppe. Sie kam schnell die ersten 20 Stockwerke herunter, weil nur wenige Leute wirklich gesehen hatten was passierte. Weiter unten wurde es dann aber sehr voll, und sie landete erst nach knapp 30 Minuten auf der Strasse, wo viele Leute standen und auf die brennenden Geb?ude starrten, was sie ziemlich ?stupid? fand. Sie rannte ?ber den angrenzenden Battery Park zur U-Bahn Station und erwischte ? wie sich hinterher herausstelte ? den letzten Zug aus dem Desastergebiet. Aber bereits nach wenigen Stationen machte der Zug eine Vollbremsung und blieb im stockfinsteren Tunnel stehen, da die Elektrizit?t und damit alle Signalanlagen ausfielen, als das der erste WTC Turm kollabierte. Erst nach mehr als einer Stunde fuhr der Zug wieder an und erreichte die n?chsten Station. Unter den Passagieren brach bemerkenswerterweise keine Panik aus, obgleich die meisten erst langsam von den in Manhattan Zugestiegenen erfuhren was passiert war. Erst als Isabel schliesslich zu Fuss und Taxi ihr Appartment erreichte und mich anrief, erfuhr sie von mir, dass inzwischen die WTC Geb?ude zusammengebrochen waren ..... wenige Minuten, nachdem sie die angrenzende Strasse ?berquert hatte. Wir sind stolz und unheimlich gl?cklich, dass sie so klug und schnell reagiert hat und wir mit einem gewaltigen Schrecken aus dieser Katastrophe davongekommen sind. Nun noch ein paar politische Bemerkungen, die mir in diesen Tagen so einfallen, wenn ich die Kommentare von Freunden in Deutschland und Europa h?re und sehe bzw. die dortige Presse am Internet lese. Es wundert es mich immer mehr, dass selbst welterfahrene Leute bei Euch einen so negativen Eindruck von George W. Bush und der amerikanischen F?hrung haben. Die deutsche Presse hat sich von Anfang an ?ber ihn lustig gemacht ohne jegliche sachlichen Gr?nde, ebenso wie damals ueber Ronald Reagan, der dann mehr f?r die Europas ?berleben und die deutsche Wiedervereinigung getan hat als alle deutschen Politiker zusammen. Ich kenne George W. bisher nur fl?chtig, habe aber verschiedene Bekannte hier in Houston, deren Urteil ich vertraue, die ihn sehr lange und gut kennen und fuer einen ungew?hnlich f?higen, hochanst?ndigen und enorm effizienten Mann halten. Bush war immerhin acht Jahre Gouverneur von Texas (Nr. 12 im Weltrang der Volkswirtschaften) und vorher erfolgreicher Unternehmer sowie intensiv als Insider und f?hrender Berater an den Wahlk?mpfen und der Regierungsf?hrung seines von mir hochverehrten Vaters beteiligt. Damit hat er sicher sehr viel mehr qualifizierte F?hrungserfahrung als Leute wie Schr?der (Ministerpr?sident meines im Vergleich dazu l?cherlichen Heimatlandes Niedersachsen), Chirac (B?rgermeister von Paris), Blair (hauptberuflicher Parlamentsabgeordneter) usw, alle fast ohne jegliche praktische Lebenserfahrung. Wir sch?tzen uns gl?cklich hier, dass Bush glaubw?rdig und ?usserst besonnen ist, und er hat mit Sicherheit das erfahrendste Team von Kabinetsmitgliedern und Beratern von allen westlichen Staaten. Sein Vize Cheney und sein Aussenminister Powell verglichen mit Herrn Ex-Hippie Fischer, Verteidigungsminister Rumsfeld verglichen mit dem l?cherlichen Volksschullehrer Scharping, Leute mit einer enormen Erfahrung nicht nur als Politiker, sondern fast alle auch in Top Positionen in der Industrie, was ganz wenige europ?ische und kaum ein f?hrender deutscher Politiker von sich sagen k?nnen. Was will man eigentlich noch, um diesen Leuten zuzutrauen, dass sie wissen, was sie tun. Nur weil sie sehr amerikanisch und ?berwiegend konservativ sind, - und ich stimme vielen ihren diesbez?glichen Positionen keineswegs zu - kann man ihnen doch ihre ?berragenden F?higkeiten und Erfahrungen nicht absprechen. Das Gleiche gilt f?r die f?hrenden K?pfe im Senat und Repr?sentantenhaus. Wenn man da z.B. das besch?mende, wochenlange Gerangel um den Einsatz von 500 (!) Bundeswehrsoldaten in Mazedonien im Deutschen Bundestag sah, kann man nur staunen, dass in Deutschland nicht erkannt wird, mit welcher Effizienz und Aufrichtigkeit amerikanische Politiker jeglicher Coleur sich im Ernstfall einig sind und zur Tat schreiten. Wenn man im Moment insbesondere die deutsche Presse und pers?nliche Kommentare verfolgt, bin ich mir nicht sicher, dass man sich bei Euch dar?ber im klaren ist, dass wir alle in einem Boot sitzen und dasselbe morgen in Europa passieren kann und - da bin ich leider sicher - wird. Mein Vater ist im Krieg gefallen, zu meinen Kindheitserinnerungen geh?rt die Evakuierung aus dem brennenden Berlin, ich war Offizier der Bundeswehr und habe in den 28 Jahren, die ich im Ausland lebend und als professioneller Weltreisender verbracht habe, einiges von der weiten Welt kennengelernt, und habe daher starke pers?nliche Gef?hle f?r diese Dinge. Ich bin vollkommen gegen S?belrasseln, voreilige Drohungen und un?berlegte Gewaltmassnahmen. Wenn man jetzt aber die Wut und Verzweifelung der Amerikaner sieht und vor allen, wenn man wirklich Respekt vor der Demokratie hat, muss man den Menschen hier zugestehen, dass sie legitimer Weise von ihren F?hrern erwarten, jetzt drastische Massnahmen zu ergreifen, auch wenn das zu einem jahrelangen Weltkonflikt f?hren wird, der nach dem Willen der Terroristen angezettelt wurde. Die Europ?er sollten froh und dankbar sein, wenn dieses reiche und zu Recht stolze Land alle seine Mittel und F?higkeiten, einschliesslich der seines Pr?sidenten, daf?r einsetzt. Es ist ?berw?ltigend zu sehen, welche Geschlossenheit und resolute Opferbereitschaft sich hier schlagartig in der Bev?lkerung ausgebreitet haben, und man kann sich, wenn man hier lebt, der Stimmung nicht entziehen, auch bei k?hlster Betrachtungsweise und sehr pers?nlichen Erinnerungen an den Krieg. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up to a very sad day, Sept 11th was my father's birthday, it was also the 9th anniversary of his passing. I made myself go to work and while sitting at my desk, I received a phone call from a friend telling me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I went to the front office to check the TV and they were showing the footage of the second plane hitting the second tower. It was unbelievable and so very scary. At this time my heart sank even farther in my body. What was already a sad day for me, was now one of the saddest for our nation. My father was a veteran of World War II and a very proud American. I was raised to believe if you didn't vote you could not express your opinions. The flag was flown constantly at our house. On my lunch hour, I went to the cemetary and sat with Dad and relayed to him everything that was going on in New York and Pennsylvania. I know he could hear me, and I felt so much better just being able to talk to him about the events, and once again remind him that I love and miss him. He would be very proud to see the patriotism that has come from such a tragedy. At first it seemed as if it was like any other day. When I remember the Spetember 11th attack,I had so many feelings, and so many people around me reacted differently. Some were the same, but others were in concern. What can I say about that day? I went into my second period class, which was social studies with Mr. A. I remember going to my regular seat and looking up at the television.I didn't understand at first. When he had explained what had really happened, my eyes were just getting filled with tears just like now while i'm writing this. I will never forget that day. I felt so bad inside. Practically screaming at the top of my lungs for help and no one can hear me.Knowing that from so far away there's nothing I can do. All I can do is pray. So that's what I did. I prayed every night for the families of the victims and the victims themselves. It was a horrible day filled with tragic overwhelming everyone in our nation. Everyone's reaction was the same. They all asked "Who could ever do something so evil to kill and hurt so many people?!" No one could barely think of what could be next. Everyone seemed so scared and frightened that something terrible might happen. The feeling of seeing these people in so much pain and agony that it hurt people everywhere. We came together as a country. United we stand forever! Weren't you scared too?? I know I was. I thought it would be different, and i was right. America will never, ever be the same again. I called home and was told that it was true and then the Pentagon was hit. Our country was under attack and we could do nothing. What target would be next? I just wanted to be home with my Mom and dog. The World Trade Center hit me hard because I am from New York and for someone to come here to my state, my city, and do this was unbelievable. But this country has to stand up for herself and say that we will not be beaten. You may have taken us while we were not looking, but never think we will fall, remember Pearl Harbor. We will fight and defend America and all she stands for, we protect what is ours and will do it to the death. We will prevail and send our cowardly attackers running back to their caves and holes with their tales between their legs. But the main cowards will be served justice American style. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was living in Auburn, Alabama with my friend Leigh Barnett and Josh Scott at Lakeside Apartments. I woke around 8:00 - 8:30 a.m. and was getting ready for school (Southern Union). My mom called my cellphone and told me to turn on the television. I turned to the local news channel and was horrified at what I saw. An airplane has struck one of the twin towers. I went and woke Josh Scott and told him to get up and see what was going on. My other roommate was at work at Auburn Flowers and Gifts. I called her and told her and she said she was fixing to come home so that she could watch the television. I had to be at class around 10:00 a.m. After watching, the second plane hit the second of the twin towers and then the collapse of the towers, I left for school. On the way to school, I turned on the radio and on EVERY station there were reports on the attacks. It was horrible, I was devastated. I pulled up to school and there were several students socializing in the parking lot. I parked and was walking towards the building and they started yelling that the schools had been canceled and Thursday classes would also be canceled. We would resume class on the following Tuesday. I stopped at Wal-Mart on my way home and bought some bottled water and batteries and an American flag. I went home and began watching television again. Called my mother several times to check on the status of her well being. Then, took Josh to community service. After lunch, I went up to the flower shop, which is where I worked also, and made a big red, white and blue bow for our door at the apartment. Whenever Leigh got off work, we cooked dinner for several friends, Jody, Holly, Bradley and Tommy and then watched the news together. Picked Josh up around 8 or 9 p.m. Then, I went up to the Exxon to get gas before the gas prices rose, they were already completely out of 87 octane and I waited approximately 30 minutes to get gas. It was a mess and it was raining!! Got back home and our company left and then we all went to bed. Tell us your story: When the first plane hit the World Trade Center, I was in 1st hour Photography taking pictures of wildlife outside near the softball fields. I wouldn't know for another two hours what had happened. 2nd hour AP Spanish came and I can remember laughing and watching a Spanish video and having a good time. Meanwhile the second plane hit the WTC and the third into the Pentagon. After 2nd hour I walked down to the bathroom like I did most days and proceeded to one of the urinals. Stephen, a boy in my grade whom I'd known for a long time stepped up to the urinal next to me. He began to talk which is bad urinal ettiquete and said, "Did you hear about the Pentagon and the World Trade Center?" I responded, "No, what?" "They've been attacked! Bombed or something!" Instantly, I knew we had just become a country at war. I was terrified of what the ramifications of this news could be. I ran upstairs to where my friends gathered between classes and told them of the events. We were all confused. 3rd hour was beginning and we rushed to choir. We entered the room, turned on the TV, grabbed chairs and just sat down. Nothing else mattered. I sat there thankful to be in the company of my best friends, watching the terrible images on the TV. The principal told our teachers to do whatever they wanted to do for the rest of the day, and most teachers did. 4th hour my chemistry teacher refused to let us watch the news because it would interupt our Chem Lab. We couldn't watch the news 5th hour either because of a math test. 6th hour, my British Brit Lit teacher couldn't understand what this meant to Americans. After school I drove myself to the downtown theatre where I had been cast in a play. I was working with professional actors, most of them from New York City. They were terrified. Their friends were all back in the City and they had no way of contacting them. I felt priveleged to be with people who were so connected with the locations of the attacks. The cast took a dinner break and sat at an outside restaurant. The streets were deserted. The only others out were the police patroling the streets. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I didn't have to begin work until a later on September 11, 2001. For some reason I didn't listen to the radio or the television while I was getting ready. I got into my car and whatever radio station I had had on was reporting that planes had struck the Pentago and the World Trade Center. I thought it was some kind of horrible accident. It took me a long time realize that it was a planned attack. I think many other people figured it out before I did. I called my mother and told her what had happened. I arrived at work in shock, not sure what to make of eveything. I work as an admissions representative for a local two year college and I travel to a different high school every day. Fortunately, on this day, I was relatively close to home, in Monroeville, only about 15 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. The teacher asked me if I knew what had happened. I said that I did, even though I didn't really understand any of it. I began my presentation, trying to focus on that and not the horrors I had heard of. During my presentation, there was a lot of commotion in the halls and the teachers wee coming in and removing students. It was very disconcerting and I kept wishing that someone would tell me what was happening. I later found out that Flight 93 had just crashed in Somerset County, a little over an hour from Pittsburgh. Parents were coming and taking their kids home. I quicky wound up my presentation, as no one wanted to hear about future career options in the midst of all this and I didn't want to be talking about it. The teacher told the remaining kids about Flight 93; having a plane go down so close to Pittsburgh was scary. My dad grew up in Derry, PA, only about 20 minutes from Shanksville. It hit very close to home for me. I was notified that they were closing all the bridges and tunnels around the city so I took a back way home. When I returned home. I hugged my mom and my daughter. I tried to shield my four year old from all of the images, but she ended up seeing them anyway. Later that evening, she drew apicture of a builiding falling down. That upset me greatly. As the day wore on, I began to feel helpless. I have several friends in New York City(not to mention my daughter's father) and had been trying to call them but couldn't get through. EVentually, I decided to do something constructive and I went to donate blood. The wait at the blood bank was two and half hours. They told this to everyone that came in and the most amazing thing happened: Everyone said okay and sat down. No one left because of the long wait. People from all different walks of life were there, wanting to do their part. I was so proud to be an American and felt so close to all of those strangers. When I returned home, I put out our flag with a mixture of great pride and sadness. I said countless prayers for the victims and their families. That flag has not come down once in a year. I appreciate the honor it is to be free and to enjoy the liberties that we have. The flag has great meaning to me now, as well as the national anthem and other patriotic songs. May we never forget those brave heroes who perished on that day and may we never take for granted what a wonderful country this is. God Bless the USA. I was at work, Green Run Elementary, I was standing in the hallway waiting for my first grade class to show up. The first grade teacher and the English as a Second Language teacher asked me if I had heard what happened, I said no and they proceeded to tell me that a plane, suspected of being terrorist, had flown into the World Trade Center Tower. I was so socked I reached out and grabbed one of the teacher's arm. At that time I had to take my take first grade class in for their lesson and I had to put it behind me. After the class left I turned on the TV and watched the second plane crashing into the second tower. ~Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? if so, tell us how. Although the incident has not affected me directly. There are subtle changes in the community and in my thinking that have resulted from this incident. Positive changes in patriotism and in the community and individual relationships. ~What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? That no country is an island, meaning we need to work globally for peace and understanding. ~Did you fly and American flag after the events of September 11th? have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th?
