Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On 9/11/01, I was in the Di-Lorenzo Tri-care Health Clinic in the Pentagon's 8th Corridor. I was a member of the Early Response Teams that rescued all of the survivors of that horrific incident. Members of our clinic received seven Soldiers Medals and numerous other Awards for their heroism and bravery, I was one of those soldiers. Our Medical Clinic was the only teams that laid hands on any of the survivors before any other medical agency. In fact, we really felt a "slap in the face" when Arlington Rescue took ALL of the credit for rescue efforts on that day. Arlington Rescue dispatched ALL of the Ambulances to the South Parking area of the Pentagon, we saw not one Ambulance when trying to get our wounded to the hospitals that were awaiting their arrival. We had to commandeer numerous privately owned vehicles to get them there. Our Medical Teams at the Pentagon deserve the right to be acknowledged as THE PRIMARY RESCUE TEAMS. If it weren't for us, very few if any survivors would have made it. Of course I know that it was not about recognition at the time of the incident but somebody could have thrown us a bone or something. I risked my life numerous times on that day only to have Arlington Rescue on the front page of the Washington Post shaking hands with Michael Jordan and the incaption of "PENTAGON'S RESCUE TEAMS ACKNOWLEDGED FOR THEIR BRAVERY." It made us ill to have to endure the pain of hearing the lie that was told all over the world. I even cornered one of their Captains almost a year later and told him these words. "Hopefully there will never be a next time, but if there ever is, could you please obstain from taking all of the credit and give some to those that deserve it?" I myself rescued 18 people, however this is not about MY accomplishments, this is about my fellow soldiers, airmen, and seamen in the Medical Feild that were there that day and made THE difference of life and death. THEY put their lives on the line and THEY deserve the credit. I never wanted to be on Oprah Winfrey telling my story, I never wanted to be called a "HERO." It's not for me to call myself a hero, it's for others to acknowledge the fact that you are one. Arlington calls themselves the Hero's of the Pentagon's attacks. I assure you that they are regular men and women that showed up at the wrong area of the Pentagon and a little too late I might add. Yes, the area that they put their Ambulances was in the area of the impact, but, we could not reach them as there were no exits to that area. We had to take our wounded to the North Parking area. We desperately searched for Ambulances and found none. I was a Police Officer in Louisanna before I went back into the military and it was my idea to commandeer P.O.V.'s to take our wounded to the local E.R.'s. If it weren't for the good people who allowed themselves to be ordered into a rescue role, there would have been far less survivors. I have no idea if anyone will ever read this, but at least I have put into words what I have felt for far too long. Thank you for at least letting me write these words down and GOD BLESS the soldiers who are still in the fight. We were about to begin our meeting and someone came running into the conference room and told us to turn on the TV - that there was something happening in New York. We stopped the meeting and turned on the TV. We couldn't believe what we were seeing. When the first plane hit, we thought, surely this is just a horrible plane crash. Then we watched the second plane fly into the second tower. About the same time, we saw a trailer across the bottom of the screen saying that a plane had just flown into the Pentagon. We stood in horror at what we were seeing, absolutely glued to the TV. When the towers fell, everyone in the room started to cry, both men and women. When it was reported that it was a terrorist attack, I just remember standing there thinking that this couldn't be happening in this country - that things like this just don't happen in the United States. The worst thing in the history of United States, as I know it up to this moment, happened Tuesday morning. A terrorist attack took place a little after 9:00am. I was in school at the time. After the second period of the day, I ran into [my friend] Jason who said a teacher told everyone that a plane had crashed into the twin towers...I passed through the auditorium and the tv was on with coverage of the events. The other 2 targets were the whitehouse and pentagon...At lunchtime, a teacher let me call home to see if everything was ok. Other students were calling, too...The school was chaotic. No classes were proceeding and all the tv's were turned on. All the shows had stopped and every single channel was covering the events. Some of the teachers were crying. Everyone else was silent. When conversations started, the guys were talking about who did it, and the girls were talking about the people who were killed. Though it seems sexist, that was a definite division in within conversations. The tv's were still on. They kept showing the same scenes over and over again: the planes hitting and the buildings collapsing. There was a plane that crashed in a field in Pittsburg. It only took 4 planes from Boston that were hijacked by Afghanistans with box cutters. My mother picked me up after school and I had a dentist appointment and a senior picture appointment. Each waiting room had the tv on with the continuing coverage. After all had calmed down, the entire country seemed to pull together to help. It made me very proud to be a citizen of this country. He had flown out on the 10th with our neighbor, the owner of a small, private plane. We had a cleaning service at our home that day, and our 5 year old son, Anthony, was watching cartoons before he had to go to Kindergarten at noon. I normally would have had the "Today" show on, but had some files and paperwork to take care of, so our son was watching TV in the family room. When the cleaning ladies came downstairs, our son went upstairs to his play room, and asked me to turn on his TV. I went up and turned on NBC to see the WTC on fire. I turned to ABC to see the Pentagon on fire. I asked myself if they were showing scenes from a bad movie, put cartoons on for my son, and ran downstairs to turn on the TV in the family room. I could not believe what I was seeing. I called my husband in Chicago to tell him what was going on. Chicago was one hour behind us, so he had still been asleep. He could not belive what I was telling him. I told him to stay safe, and to keep in touch. His conference was cancelled, but he could not get home until the next day. As air space was closed, he rented a truck to get home. Our son was upset by the events only after he heard on TV that the Sears Tower had been evacuated. he knew his Daddy was staying close by there, and he figured if 2 towers in NYC came down, maybe his Daddy's tower would too. We called Daddy several times (enough to waste his cell phone battery!) to give him comfort that Daddy was still okay. I knew someone that I graduated high school with, and also someone that I went to college with, who both lost their lives as they worked at the WTC. I watched as my son's school made a human flag today, and I shed tears for those I knew and those whose stories I have only seen on TV, read in books and magazines and have heard about through friends. I, like many others, was far away from NYC; Washington, DC; and Shanksville, PA on September 11, 2001. Growing up in New England and Pennsylvania, I knew of, or had been to, all of the locations involved. I felt a closer connection to what had happened, as compared to my neighbors, because of that fact. NYC will never be the same to me and I'm not sure when I will be going back for a visit. The lives of every person here on earth have been changed - hopefully we will never see another day like 9/11/01 in any of our lifetimes. We had CNN in Brazil, but I could not rem. what channel. My friend told me, and I watched in horror. At the time, we were 4 hours ahead of US time. I thought of my children living in our home in St. Louis, and immediately called them. They were terrified. We kept in touch all day long, my children telling me the latest news. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was talking to my grandmother and heard on 95.5 that a plane has hit one of the towers. I told my grandmother to turn the TV on and I will call her later. I then immediately called my husband who worked in the City at the time and he said that a plane hit and they think it was more than just an accident. At that point I held my stomach, for I was 6 months pregnant at the time and was really not sure what was happening. I proceeded to work and when I arrived the chatter was that another plane hit and then the Pentagon. At that moment I thought of my older children who were in school and I left work without looking back. I truly felt at that point that we were going to war on our homefront that things will never be the same. I kept thinking of my children in school wondering what they were thinking. I immediately could not get over the bridge since they closed it but I finally went down a one way street and proceded onto the bridge. As I was driving I looked to my left and there it was smoke billowing from the towers. My heart ached and I had an odd feeling that it was one of those events that will live with you forever. I worried about my husband but felt so helpless for my children and my child who was not born yet. I never returned to work after the 11th. I stayed home and my second daughter was born on the 11th of December. I would not stop watching TV. I was in awe of the life I put my children in. I do realize we will come through and we will succeed in whatever we need to do to stop this terror on our homefront. I want to hold my children safe, I want them to never feel afraid or alone in this world. I want them to know this is a wonderful world we live in and that 90% of us are good and honest people. I want them to love and never hate those around us. I hope that we can make their world a better place and a safe place. I feel for all of those lost and all of those that have lost. I could never imagine this happening to us, but we are stronger for it and we will come out of it bigger and better. Hug more, love more, try not to yell or get upset over simple things. Enjoy every day and every minute. Those people did not chose to leave us they were forced into it. My heart felt sympathy to all of those who lost and those of us who have been affected by this horrible event. Hug your children and family more...love them more...understand them more...your family is the most important and that you are there for them in good times and in bad. I never had a day go by that I don't think of what happened, the people it happen to and the children that this has effected. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I was pulling out a pallet that was around 9 feet tall. As I was pulling it very slowly toward me it got highsided on the edge of the trailer, sending the whole contents of the pallet on top of me. I have always been very carefull pulling these out because Affiliated Foods were getting sloppy, and wrapping their pallets loosely. I had turned my head to make sure of my footing and the whole 1000lbs came down on top of me. I cried out for it seemed like 10 minutes until one of the store employes came out and went for help... I was under the pallets load until I was freed. I thought I had pulled a muscle and took some anvil for the pain. I had called my company and told them what had happened. Before I got to Santa Rosa I got called my wife and told her what had happened. Several minutes later I heard on the c.b. that the twin towers in New York had been hit. And my wife called again telling me what had happeded. When I got to Santa Rosa, I called my safety person and told her what had happened,I had a accdent and I was hurting. My semi-truck went 90 miles an hour and that was what I was did. I was passing every thing including cow trucks. I was hurting bad at this time,My pain was was mine and I felt the pain of the others too that were in N.Y. I had made it back to Amarillo and went to the doctor. I had broken my back. I found out 8 months later that I had blown 2 discs too. I had surgery on Oct 30,2002. I now have 2 eight inch rods and 16 screws and part of my spine is fused. I was feeling the pain of the people of Sept 11,2001 with my own. I still have those feelings, their loss and mine. It was a little after 9:00am and I changed the channel on my kitchen TV from sesame street to channel 7 to see Regis and Kathie Lee. I saw live coverage of tower 1 full of smoke and the commentator saying it was hit by a plane. My husband was home as he didn't leave for work yet and he was yelling Oh my God thats a no fly zone. My mom was also with us in the kitchen. My two little children were in the living room watching cartoons. We continued to watch the TV and all of a sudden we saw Tower 2 get hit. Right then and there we knew it was some kind of attack. I started to cry and couldn't stop watching what was going on. Later on we heard that the Pentagon was hit and a few moments later I heard a fighter jet fly over my house. I immediately called the middle school and high school in my town and went to pick up my children and a few friends and took them to my house. I grew up here and had returned two years ago to care for my 89 year old mother. We had been away from the area for 20 years and in that time we were unaware of many changes that had taken place. People were now living in Orange county and commuting to NYC, many of whom were firemen and policemen. Thirty years ago this would have never occurred. On September 11,2001 people were taking trains, buses, and cars into the city unaware of the horrific saga that was about to unfold. MY husband had gotten up around 8 am to make coffee and watch the local news on CNN. I was just getting up around the time the first plane had hit the first tower. My husband said a plane hit the World Trade Center. I immediately thought some nut had flown a small engine plane near the city and had lost control. This had happened in other locations recently and my mind did not think about a terriorist attack. Moments later, we watched as the second plane hit and we looked at each other and said we have been attacked by terriorists. We watched the fire, and the explosions never thinking the buildings would fall. Then one collapsed and then the other. It was like watching a movie with terrific special effects only this time it was real. The rest of the day is a blur. We were glued to the TV set waiting for news of the other planes and there victums. I felt the same feeling of dread I did the day John F Kennedy was shot and killed. Everyone was stunned and in shock. Nothing seemed oridinary. Everything stopped and for many time just stood still. People were too overcome with emotion to do anything. I remember giving music lessons that afternoon, trying to go on with my normal routine. Most of my students attended as usual, but a few cancelled. They had friends and neighbors who were fireman and policemen. Now they were gone or missing. Tonight I played for a service of Rememberence and Reconciliation. The names of the lost from the Hudson Valley were read. I could not believe how many men and women were killed that day from this area alone. I still cannot comprehend it all. I doubt if I ever will. Growing up here, New York City seemed so removed from the life I led. Now this area is New York City's backyard and the tragedy of 9/11 is the reality of that fact. I was coming off shift and was getting ready for work at my part time job. I was getting out of the shower and was greeted with, "You gotta see this!!" I came out of the shower, hair wet, partially dressed and stood in awe and disbelief as they showed videos of the first tower being struck. I stood there wondering if what I was seeing was real or a made for TV movie. It was all too apparent that it was real. I continued to get ready for work as the second tower was hit. Again, I stood there in disbelief. What people, in their right minds, would do this to thousands of innocent people? It was all I could do to tear myself away from the TV and go on to work. It is now a year later and I still stare in awe and disbelief as I look at the towers crumble and fall into a heap of rubble. I can't help but cry as I realize that it was real and it did happen. I am still amazed as I see flags waving; red, white and blue streamers blowing; bumper stickers with patriotic sayings and slogans; and the comradery of the American people as they bond together in freedom. The terrorists did not accomplish what they were trying to do. All they did was bond the American people together. This is MY land. The land of the free and the home of the brave. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Last year on this day, I was working in the Ivory Coast in West Africa. I watched live with two colleagues as the third plane crashed into the Pentagon and as the first tower collapsed. My mother called from the US and gave me the little additional information that was available at the time. The following days were very difficult. It was impossible to call the US to check on my friends in NY and Washington DC. Luckily, none of my friends or family members were directly affected that day. September 11th coincided with an important professional meeting where I gave my first professional presentation. My thoughts were on crashing towers and I could hear the voices of those trapped, yet I successfully delivered my speech to a room filled with foreign government representatives. We spent the rest of the week in meetings, discussing project strategies. I felt very isolated by what had happened in the US and unable to take time to grieve until the following weekend. I am grateful to Eric Brown, a American friend and former colleague, who was in the Ivory Coast with me that weekend. I was finally able to talk about my feelings and cry with someone who understood how I felt. This year, I am again abroad, in Guatemala where I currently live and work. One year ago, I swore to myself that I would spend this day in the US and yet I am not. My "absence" is partly intentional and partly lack of planning. I wish I were in the US today to feel a part of a community and be allowed to shed tears of sorrow and commiseration. Yet no matter how deeply my feelings run, life goes on and so do I. From my office in Guatemala, I think of the men & women that lost their lives one year ago. I have held my private ceremony to mark this day and in spirit, I join the international community that remembers what happened today and ponders on how we have changed. I am grateful that America stands united. I am grateful to the individuals and foreign nations that have showed their support. My sympathies go out to the families of those who perished and my respects to each and every person that helped alleviate the atrocities of that day. May God be with us all. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at home and I had just gotten out of bed. Being four months pregnant I always had trouble sleeping. My grandmother had called me and told me that a plane had just hit a building in New York. That apparently was the first plane because as I was watching tv not long after the the second plane hit. I couldn't believe my eyes. I watched everything unravel that day on tv and as I was watching that second plane fly towards that building I just wanted to scream to everyone and tell them to run. After everything that had happened and I was watching the news I couldn't help but think where does this leave me and my baby's future and for that matter all the families that were affected? I just want to send out my deepest sorrows to all the families. America is behind you and the military who is fighting for us and putting their lives on the line for for freedom. Here we are 5 years down the road and I do not feel like we have adequately responded to the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11/01! We entered IRAQ under false assumptions and I feel that we (the country) were lied to at that time. We were told that Saddam Hussein had Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) and that this was why it was urgent for us to get into IRAQ and overthrow S. Hussein and eliminate the threat to OUR security, especially after the attack on the WTCs and the Pentagon. Lo and behold, there were NO WMDs, not even Chemical threats found in IRAQ! Should we have invaded IRAQ? Was S. Hussein a tyrannt? Yes, I believe he was 9a tyrannt) and now we are engaged in attempting to bring stability and order to what we believe is to their benefit, a type of democracy. Is this right? Is this our place to do? Should we be spending all of this money on IRAQ, when we have storm demolished areas of our country that have not been rebuilt? Should we be paying for the establishment of some sort of democracy in IRAQ, while we have starving, underpriveleged, underpaid, uneducated and unemployed legions in the USA? NO! Since we are already there, should we pull out? No, not just all of a sudden, however our politicians, must be held to account for their mistakes and we must be told the truth. Recently our President admitted to CIA camps around the world holding terrorists, which he claims that he did not know were torturing or mistreating their captives. Is this wrong? I believe that it is wrong that he claims that he did not know something, I believe that he did know and is attempting to distance himself from it for political reasons, only. Our country, sadly is in terrible shape, economically! I fear for our children and their children. I believe in GOD and Country and I love the USA and for our history but I feel that the time that we are living through now will go down in history as a dark period in our history and I pray for the grace of GOD and wisdom for our politicians. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: When I woke up that morning it was sunny and I was happy because I wanted to visit the World Trade Center with a friend. We wanted to meet at 8.00 at the Newark Penn Station to go to NY by subway. This was my 12th day in the USA. I was completely excited. My whole life I was dreaming about visiting the United States and finally my dream came true. So I took my bagpack, and when I wanted to leave the house I got a phonecall from the College I had made a test for my studies. They told me to come there in one hour at 9am instead of Wednesday, one day later as a was supposed to. So I asked a friend of mine to drive me. We had to go to Cranford, NJ. When we got back, the day was so beautiful....I raised my head and saw the WTC, the first tower was burning and I say the smoke. It was so unreal, what had happened? I thought it was a joke. I put on the radio and they were telling something but they either didn?t know what was going on at that time. My friend immediately said that it was a terrorist attack. I had to laugh because I thought that he was joking. Then I saw a plane coming very close, but the car turned and I couldn?t see no more. A little bit farther I could see the two towers burning and more smoke was coming up,. At that time I didn?t know that there were planes involved. When we finally reached the house back in Secaucus where I lived, I got into and screamed that everyone should turn on the TV. Then the same second I saw the two towers collapsing. I couldn?t move, for hours I was staring at the scenery imagining myself inside of the buildings. What if the college hadn?t called me? Would I be there, seeing and throughliving all what others? For the next days I was watching TV. The worst for my parents in Spain, they couldn?t call me and neither could I. THey thought I was there in the buildings, as I told them before. This had turned my life around. I?m with this city all the time, with my thoughts. And this will stay in my memory for the rest of my life. Regards for the firefighters who did the best they could. Tell us your story: Well i was actually in Australia at the time of the devistating September 11 attack, i was watching morning T.V. and then all of a sudden this flashing news broadcast came on and interupted the program that i was watching. All i could see was images of the planes fyling into the building and then all of these people jumping out of the windows into the open sea. I found myself emotionally tied to the situation although none of my family members were hurt, all of the innocent people that were just going about there normal daily activity had lost thier lives to a very selfish person that realy had no reason to do such a thing. Not only did they take thier own life but that of innocent people, and although not the lives of the loved one's that had thier lives taken, it took apart of them that they will never be able to get back no matter how hard they tried. They said a plane had crashed into the WTC. I thought of a small single engine plane lost in bad weather. But when I got home and turned on CNN, it was much worse. It was then the 2nd plane hit. I stayed up all night watching this horror. I had only moved to Saudi 3 days before, my wife was back in the USA. I woke them up when I phoned and told them what had happened. She was due to fly to Saudi that week, but we delayed for a few weeks. In the days to come, I would learn of 3 people I knew, who died in this act of terrorism. God bless the USA! Tell us your story: I was sitting in Reading when the Dean of students sent a letter to the teachers explaining everything, I didnt know what to think at first. I was scared and confused and didnt know if anything else was going to happen. I went on with my day helping my friends who needed me and my mom picked me and my sister up early, she just wanted everyone to be together. I never thought anything like this could happen ever. I turned on the TV but everything was coverage on the attacks. In december I went to Ground Zero. As soon as I saw the memorials I lost it.. i couldnt stop crying. To think that something that happens in a story book can happen in real life. I saw the rubble and the people working. I cant belive that they go in there and do that. They really are hero's for giving their lives for someone elses. New York and the United States will stand strong. And Everyone who is helping is doing a great job. My old law firm had an office in the South Tower on the 78th floor. Fortunately, no one was there that morning. Also, I was very blessed not to lose any friends. The images still haunt me though. Tell us your story: I had come to work early on September 11 for an 8:00 AM breakfast meeting in the ground floor coffee shop of the City University of New York Graduate Center, which is located across from the Empire State Building on 34th St. and 5th Ave. in Manhattan. A late arriving colleague at the meeting announced to all of us at the table that a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. Like millions of others we assumed this was a small plane that had flown accidentally into one of the towers. We said something about this lamentable accident and resumed our meeting, which ended a bit past 9 AM. On exiting the coffee shop I encountered the president of The Graduate Center, who stood ashen faced near the entrance to the college. She asked me if I?d heard the news, and I said yes, something about a small plane hitting the WTC, and she then told me that, no, a second plane, a large airliner, had struck the WTC. And like everyone else, in that instant I realized that this was no accident, but a planned terrorist act. I immediately flashed back eight years earlier when the WTC had been bombed by terrorists. Along with many others inside our building I was drawn to the street where, if one looked down Fifth Ave., even that far north, it was possible to see the tops of the twin towers. Black smoke billowed from the two towers and as I stood, with fellow New Yorkers on Fifth Ave. (traffic, except for emergency vehicles, had disappeared) gazing south and trying to comprehend what was happening, I saw the first tower silently crumble and disappear from view. Someone standing next to me screamed "the tower fell" and I responded, with absolute certainty, that that wasn?t possible, that perhaps just the top of the tower had crumbled. We all rushed inside, seeking functioning radios or televisions, and I soon discovered on TV, to my uncomprehending horror, that the first tower had indeed fallen. I knew that the WTC drew tens of thousands of people every day, this was after rush hour, and I was certain, in that instant, that literally tens of thousands of people had died. Those of us who stood around staring at the college?s few TV sets were subjected to endless recorded and live images of fire, mayhem and that awful shot of the second plane flying full speed into the second tower. Within minutes of coming inside, as we watched the second tower crumble, an intense feeling of shock and numbness washed over all of us. Some of my colleagues literally couldn?t speak; others couldn?t stop speaking. We all sat in front of those horrible televised images for several hours after, not knowing what else to do but bear witness to what was unfolding just a few short blocks downtown. Periodically, we?d leave the TV for our desks to try to call loved ones, usually without success because of clogged phone lines. I was particularly concerned about my colleagues at the American Social History Project offices, which are located in lower Manhattan, scant blocks from the World Trade Center. ASHP staff members were attending the weekly staff meeting in the downtown office and only hours later did I finally learn that they were unharmed, though they?d all had to walk for miles to get home that morning. I was also finally able to reach my wife by phone (she works far uptown) and a bit later learned that my daughter, who had been on her way by car to teach in southern New Jersey, had gotten stuck in Staten Island when all the bridges into and out of the city shut down. It ended up being far easier to communicate with friends, colleagues, and family members via email, which I was able both to send and receive within minutes of the attacks. The feeling of numbed horror stayed with me and every other New Yorker for days after the attacks as we tried, largely unsuccessfully in the coming weeks, to have our lives return to some semblance of normality.
