On September 11 i left early to drive to Western PA for a second dinner interview that night. I was in Northern MD when I first heard of the Twin Tower and the Pentagon crashes. I thught "my God I was just miles away from the Pentagon" and I tried to envision what must be going on. I drove further into PA and stopped for gas and to use the money machine and then I continued on to my destination. While driving I lisened to the announcement about the plane going down in PA but I was unfimilar with the area and did not know the location. That night, in my room, I was emptying my pockets and I looked at the money machine receipt. For a location it said "Somerset PA". Even though I did not see any of the occurances it really hit home by just being in the area. I still have the money machine receipt. I got a call at 6:30 am pst from my daughters boyfriend who sad "turn on the television". The rest is all a part of history. After the shock set in I realized that I would have been on a plane that morning going to Chicago for a conference if I had not been home on leave. I sat down at my desk and began to check e-mail and listen to voicemail, again, just like any regular day. However, soon after settling in for the day's work a co-worker came by and said, "Did you hear that a plane crashed into the World Trade Center?" I knew the situation must be bad but assumed that it was an airline accident due to a malfunction with the aircraft, etc. The word "terrorism" didn't cross my mind at the time. A few minutes later I tried to check several news outlet's websites but could not get any pages to load due to the overwhelming traffic on the Internet. Then I went down to the atrium of my office building (where a large TV was located) and saw most everyone in my office gathered around watching as the horrific attacks took place. We literally sat there all day watching the TV...clearing our calendars and cancelling meetings so that we could keep up with what was going on. Although I was 1,000 miles away from what was happening in NYC, I can remember even the smallest details of that day as I watched the terrible events that happened to our country. The next day I travelled to Atlanta for a business meeting. There was an eerie feeling inside of me as I passed the Atlanta-Hartsfield Airport. Typically I would see 5 - 10 airlplanes take off while passing by the airport...however, on 9/12 there was a peculiar calmness at the normally bustling airport due to the grounding of all aircraft. The events of the day of and the weeks following 9/11 will stick in my mind forever. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a medical secretary at a rehab hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 90 miles from New York City. I was sitting at my desk and thought I'd listen to the 9 AM news. When I turned on the radio, I heard that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I thought how could anyone hit a tower with a plane. The pilot must have had a heart attack. Just a few seconds later, it was announced that a second plane had hit the second tower. Immediately I realized that this could not be a coincidence. I ran through the hallway of the hospital. Everyone else was sitting at their desks, working calmly. I was the only one on my floor that knew about what was going on. I quickly found a doctor working at a computer and told him what had happened. He looked up at me and said one word, "terrorists". I quickly ran back to my desk and called my daughter in California, leaving a message for her as she was still sleeping. Her husband is in the Navy and they are on a naval base, so I was very concerned for them. Then I called my son to make sure he was okay. Then I spoke with my mother. She was concerned that everyone in the family was okay. We assured each other that everyone in my family was safe. I thought about my Dad, who had passed away several years before. He was a Patriot, he loved his country. He fought in the 2nd world war and taught his children duty, honor, country. What would he think about the events of 9/11? I felt relieved that he was not here to witness the tragedy, that ripped all of our hearts open wide. It would have upset him so much. I will never forget that moment in my life. Quickly the word began to spread throughout the hospital and we all gathered in front of the TV to watch in horror. As I look back on that day, I know that none of us really comprehended what was actually taking place in front of our eyes. I drove home quickly that afternoon, went into my garage, and searching, found a small American flag that was there on the shelf, along with all the other junk in the garage. I took that flag and marched down my driveway and shoved it into the ground in front of the mailbox with great force, cursing the terrorists. I still was not really sure of what had happened, I just felt that I had to put the flag out. Mine was the first house in the neighborhood to have the flag flying. I am proud of my flag. Thank you for giving me this chance to relate my tiny little insignificant story. This event has truly changed me and the way I look at things. I mourn every one who died that day, the children, the mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, loved ones. I especially mourn the injury to my country. How could anyone ever hurt my country, the country that I love so much. Lastly, I want to say, I AM AN AMERICAN... GOD BLESS OUR COUNTRY. Tell us your story: It was late September the 10th when my fianc?e (Ann) and I were saying our good-byes to one another when we both realized that my soon to be daughter (Ashley) had told me to be careful for about the 6th time that evening. Even before hanging up the phone she had to tell me once more to ?be careful and I Love You?. This was something she had not done a lot in the few months her mother and I had been dating so I was pleased that she was finally coming around. Or did she just have a feeling The morning of September 11th started the same for me as it does thousands of American business professionals that must travel for a living. Up at four in the morning to catch that early flight. I was flying from Greensboro, NC about an hour and a half away from my home in N Wilkesboro, NC to Houston TX. Ann has never been one to want copies of my itineraries. She said if something ever happened she would rather be able to keep her faith as long as possible that I was OK than to know for sure. So I usually tell her where I am going and when I will call. When I landed in Charlotte, NC to catch a connecting (Cheaper flight) to Houston. I realized I had forgotten to mention something to Ann so I picked up the phone and gave her a call. Ashley answered and it started again. ?Be careful, I love you?. ? I love you too sweetie, let me talk to your mama.? Again we were both amazed by Ashley?s newfound love for me. Shortly there after I boarded my plane to Houston. As usual I went straight to sleep before we ever left the airstrip. A few hours into the trip I was awaken by the pilot saying ?Can I have your attention!? ?President Bush has just declared a National State of Emergency and has ordered all planes to land at the nearest Airport.? For us that was Jackson Mississippi. People immediately started griping about how they were going to get to their destination. My thoughts were Saddam Hussein was at it again. As the plane neared the ground people started turning on cell phones to try to get a jump on the rental car industry. Once on the ground I too turned on my cell phone to begin making calls. The phone immediately flashed that I had 4 voice messages so I began to listen. All 4 were from Ann the first was ?Sweetie Call me when you land? The second about the same but a little shaky. By the fourth she was in a calm state of hysteria if you will. At this point I was just finding out what had happened and I couldn?t understand why she was so upset she knew I was heading to Texas. I immediately called her office and to the day I die I will never forget the receptionist saying, ?Our prayers have been answered? before beginning to cry and screaming to Ann that I was on the phone. It was then that I found out that they had not released where the other planes had came from only the first one. It was definitely a time of rejoice and relief. The relief that many families did not get. Ashley on the other hand had to wait till after school to find out that I was OK. Her school decided that this was such a historical event that they rolled TV?s into every room so the students could watch the events unfold not thinking that some of the students may have someone out there that they were concerned about. She said she watched and she prayed that I was OK. As I began the long 13 hour drive home I called my office to let everyone know that I was OK and to also check to see If the guys in the office where all accounted for. I knew several where in the area and may have been on those flights. It was several hours before they were all accounted for and luckily we lost no one. Thousands of people lost someone near to them on this tragic day. I thank God that he let me return home safe to my friends and family and has allowed me to begin a new adventure as a new husband and father. I still travel for a living and every time I schedule a flight I remember the events of September 11th. They are forever etched in my soul. Tell us your story: My parents know that there better be a damn good reason to wake me up at 5:45 in the morning, because I don't have classes until 9:30, and i don't normally wake up until 8. Well, the horrific events of the 11th proved to be that catalyst. My dad woke me up by banging on my door saying "go out front and turn on Fox News Channel, there's been a massive plane crash into the WTC. Being as my dad was an aeronautical engineer, we were discussing what could have caused a plane to crash, and we came up with the conclusion that there was a massive navigational error. Some time later, while we were watching channel 8, we saw the second plane crash and knew this was more than a navigational error, I remember saying " S--t, that was more than a accident, it looks like we're going to war!" I immediately dressed, called my mom at work and we came up with our game plans for the day, should there be any problsms. You see, my mom works in a prison, and there would be some problsms with her Arab imates, for certain. By the time I got to school, most of the teachers were in the library watching the TV. I asked if there was any new news, and we got some just after I walked in, that there was a plane crash in Pennsylvania, and one in the Pentagon a short time beforehand. I got on the phone to my mom at work, and told her the situation. We went to our first period classes, and from there, we dispersed throughout Dayton HS, to any classrooms with cable and a TV to watch the events unfold. My classmates were in a state of shock, and on very high alert. We had rumors circulating that military recruiters were picking up the students that were on the ?deferred deployment? list, and we were going to be locked down in our classrooms. The Christian Club held a prayer vigil at the flagpole, with 90% of the school attending. I remember e-mailing my dad warning him that we may go into a lockdown at the school until we knew the severity of the situation in NY and Washington. I was never so glad to get home from school in my life. I called some friends from my church and found out that there was a prayer service at Reno Christian Fellowship, and I should get my butt up there. I couldn?t get there because I was scared to death of driving on Geiger Grade that night. I had never prayed so much that the pain would end, and this would be just a horrible nightmare, that would pass over in a couple of days. I also vowed to never forget the events of 9-11, and how we need to be thankful for our blessings and positive aspects that come out of every tragedy, no matter how horrible the situation, there has to be at least a little glimmer of hope in the situation. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My 9/11 story began on 9/10. On that day, I was in New York City, at 1095 Avenue of the Americas in mid-towm Manhatten. I was on the 42nd floor, with a clear view down to the Financial District and the Trade Center, which dominated the skyline in that direction. It was a beautiful day, and I told my wife what a sight it was when I came back home to Clifton, Virginia that evening. The next day, Tuesday, 9/11, began with me at work with Verizon on Courthouse Road in the Rosslyn section of Arlington. I had a conference call with folks at 1095 Avenue of the Americas back in New York. The call began at 8:30. Just before 9AM, a person on the call interrupted to say that a plane had hit the Trade Center. While we were discussing what a terrible accident that was, the seond plane hit. We then all knew this was no accident. I tried calling my wife at home and could not reach her. My secretary came into my office with the news that the Pentagon had just been hit. At this time I became numb. I went to the 11th floor of the office building, as high as I could go, and looked west toward the Pentagon, which was over hill and out of view, about three miles away. The sight before me shocked me beyond what I can convey adequately. In the foreground, on the top of the hill on the grounds of Fort Meyer, was a flag pole with a large American flag, waving in the breeze and set against the most beautiful clear bluw sky. In the background was a huge column of black smoke, rising high into the air and blowing south, across the Potomoc River and over Washington DC. I became so very angry that our country had been attacked. I did not know who had done it, but prayed for the many I knew must have died, and for God to protect us. I am not a religious person, but I felt a strong need to do this. I left the 11th floor, and in the elevator lobby the TV's were showing the collapse of the first tower to fall. No one could absorb what was happening. Many were crying. I was more angry as I headed back to my office. Work was dismissed, and we were all told to go home. I got in my car and onto US 50, which was jammed. The scene was one from a science fiction movie. People were walking on the median strip, and the road was completely jammed. I was struck by how calm everyone appeared to be. There was no rudeness or panic. Probably most were like me...more in shock than in conscious control of emotion. Two hours later I turned onto my gravel road at home. There was a beautiful deer in a clearing calmly standing and watching me as I approached. I remember thinking "Life does go on". Life has gone on, but I think about what happened regularly...not every day, but very often. I still pray for God to protect us, and for the strength to Do The Right Thing if I ever find myself in a position that I must do so. I am so very impressed at the bravery displayed that day, and since that day, by so many. I ask that none of us ever forget. Tell us your story: I remember that i was walking my girlfiend to work and a woman drove by saying "turn on a radio, we're at war." and at the time, I didn't think anything of it until i got home and my landlord was standing on the front porch with a phone saying "you might want to call your family." and then i walked inside and flipped on the t.v. Like many others, I can't even begin to describe how I felt...a sense of utter shock, a thought that "It could never happen here." It took me over 45 minutes to call my family and find out that they were ok and i ount myself amongst one of the luckier ones as if my mother hadn't called in sick that day, both she and my daughter would've been ringside at Ground Zero. I remember her saying "things will never be the same here."and even to this day, it still holds true. It's been a long time since i thought of what happened and mythoughts drift to those who lost family,friends,loved ones ad my heart still goes out to them. We as a Nation and as a people should never forget what happened and strive to bring those responsible to justice. So, please rememebr those who were lost, the civillians who had no clue of the terrible events that were to unfold and to those brave public servants who gave their lives selflessly trying to save them. Tell us your story: The day began like any other, arising far too early for my taste and making the trek to Chemistry, far too achedemic in curiculum for the wee hours of the morning. Class began as usual, and the familiar ring of our teacher's cell phone sounded. As she intently listened to her caller, we watched the expression on her face change from fatigued and overworked to shocked and devestated. The caller had actually been a close friend who resides in New York calling to inform her of his whereabouts and that he was not in any extreme danger due to the terrorist attacks of that morning. Up until that point, there was not a soul in the room who had heard a single comment on the horrific events that had taken place on that fateful morning. At that moment, none of us truely realized the extraordinary impact these events would have on the lives of so many, personally, nationally, and world-wide. All I knew at that moment was that the World Trade Center had been attacked, that each Twin Tower had been struck by a commercial airplane. (I, unfortunately, was informed of the first plane's crash simultaneously with the second plane's crash.) Instead of encouraging the investigation of any details whatsoever of that morning, we were forced to return to the everyday activities of a "normal" school day, stifling all curiosity we had. The school officials claimed this was too traumatic an event to be wittnessing at school, that many students would feel far too uncomfortable and would prefer to wait until they were in the comforts of their own homes to investigate the situation any further. To some, this is perfectly valid, however, the day seemed endless, and I could hardly bear learning of these life-altering events through rumors and word of mouth by means of what my friends were previewed to by the few teachers who disobeyed the principal's orders. I wanted to know who committed these horrific acts of violence against innocent civilians, what motives they had, and what the reprocussions were thus far. Few of my questions could actually be answered until much later, but I needed and yearned for some connection to New York; I wanted to actually see what was happening. When I got home, the aftermath of September 11th was not very different from most anyone else's. I am fortunate enough to not know personally anyone who passed away due to the terrorist attacks. However, I sympathized and empathized with all who had any remote connection to any victims. I would find myself bawling in the car as I listened to the radio, where the announcer was revealing yet another story of an email a son received from his father on the 82nd story of the second Twin Tower, reading something to the effect of "If I dont make it, I want you to know I love you and am so incredibly proud of everything you do." These heartwrenching stories were endless, one after the other, each unique in who it affected and how they would confront their emotions. Yet, these events bound everyone together. The nation as a whole mourns for the civilians, firefighters, police men, emergency workers, and vollunteers who tragically lost their lives. We want to be able to say that we can return to normalcy; however after a tragedy such as this normalcy will never be the same again. We will all remember where we were on the morning of September 11th. It is sad to admit that it took a something of this magnitude to arise within us such national pride and sympathy for the common man. However, now that it has happened, all we can do now is prevent anything like this from happening again. I want anyone directly affected by the attacks of 9-11 to know that no matter how hard life seems, and how much they question why it had to happen to them, the rest of us are experiencing the pain and suffering with them. Though it may not be the most noteworthy account or the most elequently written, I want to dedicate my story to the memory of all those who tragically lost their lives on September 11, 2001. They stopped talking about their topic and said they were going to a report about the World Trade Center. I saw camera footage of one of the towers smoking due to the huge hole in it. A witness was talking about it sounding like a bomb but others recalled seeing a plane crash into it. Alot of people were confused. Another bomb? A plane crashed into the tower? What was going on? I didn't know what to think! Then, I saw another plane flying too close and it turned almost sideways and crashed into the otherside of the second tower. I went numb. It felt like the world was coming to an end! I called my mother at work to tell her what was going on and how scared I was. Then, another plane hit the Pentagon! It was unbeleivable. I remember asking her "do you think we're about to go to war?" She agreed that's exactly how it seemed. Later, they found another crashed but luckily it didn't hit a building. It was still just as horrible! It seemed like seconds later the beautiful Twin Towers collapsed, one by one. Throughout the day, I most have called her a billion times! I called my best friend, in Indiana and my grandmother. I don't know who all I talked to that day but I know I was really in shock and scared to death of what was about to happen! On 9/11/01, I was in the Pentagon cafeteria getting coffee when I heard people talking about a plane crash in New York City, and it sounded like a terrible accident. I left the cafeteria and ran into an Army sargeant that I knew well and he told me "World Trade Center... both towers... one plane each." I ran up to my boss' office in the "E-ring" and walked in to find two of my colleagues watching the breaking news on TV, with the Trade Towers on fire. We knew who must have done this. As we watched, it occurred to me that the day might not be over, since we knew that Al Qaeda often liked to try simultaneous strikes in different locations. As my thoughts were swirling in my head and I began to focus on the fact that we were probably already in a War on Terrorism, I felt the building shake. We called it the "thud" on the side of the building where I was (nearly the complete opposite side of the building from the impact). I knew we had been hit. My colleagues spent the next couple of minutes in denial, until the TV broke away from the story in New York, to show our building with thick, oily black smoke pouring from it. The mental loop went through our heads over and over, a surreal disconnect of realization that we were actually in the building that was now on the news around the world. After another minute or two, people began shouting in the hallway. We had been hit. By what, we did not know, but most assumed that it was another airplane. Could there be more? We filed outside and the alarms were sounding. Standing on the parade ground, I turned around to see the black cloud I had seen moments earlier on the television. Wondering what might be next, we heard the Defense Protective Service police shouting for us to get away from the building -- another plane was coming. I made it to my car and drove up the George Washington Parkway, finally getting home a few hours later, after stopping at a payphone to convince the operator to put me through to my parents in Boston. On 9/12, no one returned to their office at the World Trade Center. We returned to a Pentagon still on fire at 7am, to continue the fight. My office reeked of jet fuel. We did not yet know that we would be facing a war on many fronts or that anthrax would further scare the nation a month later. And, two years on, we have a long, long way to go. We will never forget. It was fairly normal except that I had a somewhat unexpected day off. I had FOX-5 News on and was half-listening to it as I was getting ready to make breakfast while browsing the Internet. That changed when one of the anchors said something about going live to New York City where "the World Trade Center is on fire." I looked over to the TV and there it was - - the South Tower on fire, as big as life. I forgot about breakfast and sat down at my computer to search for some news as the news anchors continued to talk about what was happening, mentioning the plane that hit the Empire State Building decades ago. I remember thinking to myself that this was a freak accident, that while disastrous, it would be OK in the long run. But suddenly, a big fireball filled half the screen, and the news guys just lost it. "Oh, there's an explosion! That's it -- someone's deliberately flying planes into buildings!" I just sat there in shock. I couldn't believe this was happening. My thoughts then went out to a close friend living in Staten Island, but possibly in Manhattan at the time (turns out she was still in Staten Island at the time, though I didn't know for almost a week). But little did I know that the terrorists weren't through just yet. I don't remember exactly when, but I heard a rumbling noise outside my window, which overlooked Columbia Pike in Arlington. I didn't know at the time, but a plane had struck the Pentagon at that moment, about 2-1/2 miles due east of me. The news anchors interrupted someone they were talking to from New York and immediately went to live coverage of "an explosion reported at the Pentagon." The now-familiar scene of black smoke pouring out of the fortress-like office building filled the screen. There were more rumblings outside, followed by an explosion that vibrated the walls and windows of my apartment. Minutes later, there was another report of a plane heading for Washington, which was alarming considering that the FAA airspace ban had taken effect. I don't remember anytime I felt more frightened in recent years, staring out the window watching for a wayward jumbo jet. Terrorism, which up until then had only been a news item from a distance, had struck home in Arlington County. Police, fire, and emergency sirens blared almost continuously all day. As I was watching for the plane, which eventually crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after an apparent heroic passenger uprising, I looked over to the TV and saw the World Trade Center shrouded in smoke. I didn't realize what had happened until whoever was talking (Dan Rather, I think) said that one of the towers had fallen. A few minutes later, the other tower collapsed. And at some point during that time, the Pennsylvania crash was reported - - first as a possible military shoot-down, but later confirmed as a crash. All I can really recall at the time was a numbness - - not quite sadness, not quite rage, not quite anything. My sister in Philadelphia did call me to make sure I was OK; my parents, who were in Orlando, Florida, that day and stranded by the FAA flight ban, didn't catch me until that Thursday. Local news coverage continued to show continuous updates of the Pentagon and the impromptu and virtual evacuation of Washington. At around 11:30 I took a blank tape and began recording news coverage, switching channels periodically to get a permanent record of the events. The tape ran all day, stopping just to make sure I had enough to get President Bush's announced speech that evening. Later that day I had to get out of my apartment, so I got in my car and drove around town. It was surreal, to say the least. Many streets miles away from the Pentagon were closed, and traffic was awful in places. As I pulled back into my apartment complex, I was able to see a dissapating plume of smoke rising above Columbia Pike. Despite all I had seen on television, that will probably be my lasting image of that day. There were two passenger planes that were hijacked and their target was the World Trade Center. The planes hit the towers at approximately 8:45 and 9:02 am. This dramatic event was later called "September 11th" because the terrorist attacks happened on that day. This day will be remembered in people's lives and generations to come. It was a terrifying moment for all Americans. I was in Earth Science class at Barker High School when this event happened. Our class heard about the news from a nearby teacher who came in and told us a plane had hit the World Trade Center buildings. So our teacher turned on the television, the television kept showing the 2nd plane hitting the north building of the trade center. Then they showed another plane crashing into the Pentagon. While showing the Pentagon attack on the bottom of the screen it said there was an evacuation in the White house. Then when I went to Global Studies class our teacher Mrs. Capen had just finished a lesson the day before on the life in Afghanistan and how the woman and children were treated as well as the Taliban. All I have to say is this was a disgusting and sick idea. Osama Bin laden is in the same boat as Timothy McVeigh the Oklahoma City bomber. The same thing that happened to McVeigh is going to happen to Osama as soon as we catch him. People are still mourning a loss of a relative or just a really close friend. America will recover with a lot more strength and people will have high integrity. I saw the north tower fall and there were people running, ash and dust along with papers flying through the air. People just barely got out and some of them did not make it out. There were fireman and policeman-helping people that either got cut and bleeding, burnt severely or were caked with dust and ash. The clean up is just finishing now 9 months later. After they found people, they buried them with American flags. There were hardly any survivors. Some of the people were in the elevators and on stairwells. People on the planes made calls to their loved ones telling them goodbye and that their plane was hijacked. Also there were people in the buildings making calls telling to their families and shouting to get the attention of the fireman. This event has affected me a lot by seeing people literally taking their life knowing that they were probably going to die anyway. Also people making calls to their families and telling them goodbye forever. It made me appreciate my life and my family more than I did before. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Listening to NPR on the radio and doing whatever in the computer sitting in my cubicle, I heard the news. My immediate thoughts were for my brother working in downtown Manhattan. I e-mailed, and got an instant "Out Of The Office Today" message. Thank God. I called and got through at 9:15 a.m.! An open line was almost impossible to get. He was a shaken wreck at home in Brooklyn afraid the tower would fall. Michael described the rain of debris in their little backyard. My husband and I were in touch by phone worried about his daughter, a young architect in midtown Manhattan. Thank God she was able to let her father know she was o.k., with one exception. She saw the towers fall. All I could do was to think of my beloved native city, the horror, and that life would never be the same as we knew it an hour prior. A year later I know that we are more aware as if there has been an instant evolution of many latent instincts and emotions. May peace reign and fear not win.
