Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at home, getting ready for work that day. It was a day like any other. I had just gotten my daughter off to school. I sat down to watch some television, when I saw the horror start. I watched as the towers were hit. In front of my own eyes! At first I just watched. Then I realized it was really happening, and I cried. Cried for those that were dying, crying for those families losing these loved ones, and cried for all those in the United States being affected. It was all I could do to go to work that day. The day dragged endlessly without no end. I felt sick for all those around. All day people were coming into the store telling of their own views of what was happening. None seeming to really understand the fullness of the tragedy. I felt the regrets in those that came in with fear of their own loved ones that might be there, and hoping all the time that it would end real soon. One lady came in that day with such greyness to her face. I asked her if I could help ease her pain, and she informed me that her husband was in New York on business. She was trying all morning to get through and find out if he was okay. I wanted to hold her and all the world until the pain went away. But knew that the only thing that I could do was sit numbly by the radio and listen to the horror story being laid out before the world. Them later on that morning it came across the news that Pennsylvania had been attacked to. My heart went through my feet, as I realized that it was close to where my son and grandson lived. I thought I would just die if my family had been killed. The day dragged endlessly as I waited for the end of my work day, and then the ride home to be over. Thanks be to the good lord that they were okay when my husband and I called. Then later on that same day, my daughter came home screaming and crying for her father. When I got her to calm down, I realized that the problem was, was that we needed to find out about her father because he was delivering to the towers that day and might be dead. The fear in her eyes, and the trembling in her voice, sent chills to the bone. When we received the call later that night that he was okay, it was a bright light being shed upon the home. Joyous tears for one life saved, but tears of hurt and anger for those lives lost. We all prayed that night for the lives that had been lost, and for the families around the world not only that had lost loved ones, but had in one way or another been affected by the tragedy. To this day a strange and unknown pain still washes over the hearts of my family as we remember how close we also came to losing fmaily in the senseless slaughter that happened on that tragic day of September 11, 2001, when the world stood still, and we pray every day for the families to be healed one day from the sufferings of that day. Tell us your story: My most vivid memory of the September 11th attacks is all the heartbreak and unnecessary lives lost over people hating other people. It is so sad to know that we cannot live as a loving group of people no matter race, religion, beliefs, and so on. My heart goes out to all the families and friends who lost someone so precious to them in these attacks. My only wish is that one day everyone will be able to walk out their own front door and not have to look behind them or beside them because of the hate that envisions this world. Tell us your story: Second hour had just come to a close, and my group of friends were congregating in the hallway during our break when a girl we knew approached us and told us that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon no more than an hour ago and that several others had flown into the World Trade Center. I didn't understand the gravity of the situation until pepole switched on the tvs in the hallways, and the horrifying explosion of a jet colliding with a giant building filled the tv screens. I had just taken Casey to the doctors and dropped him off at school. I arrived home around 9:00 a.m. I turned on my favorite news channel, the "Today" show and they were showing video tape of the first tower that was struck. I immediately jumped on the phone and called Aunt Linda's where Aunt Donna and Mamaw were and told them to turn on the T.V. the World Trade Center had just been struck by a plane. As I stood there with them on the phone and wathcing the T.V. I witnessed the second plane hitting the second tower. I just said, "Oh my God!" and told them I had to go. I just went and sat down in disbelief. I sat there all day, they wanted me to come over but I was glued to the T.V. As I sat there through the morning I saw what happened to the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. I wondered what the heck was going on and who would do something like this. I watched the whole thing unfold on T.V. I must have said, "Oh, my God" a hundred times that day as the towers collapsed and all that happened on T.V. right in front of me. Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Well, it makes you think about how much people's lives can change in a split second. I think I appreciate the firemen, policemen and emergency workers so much more when you see how they put their lives on the line everyday they go to work. Even though our family didn't know anyone that lost their life that day I feel their pain and grieve for them. Another way its changed is being much more aware of my surroundings and who's doing what and just watching out more. And just talking about it makes me cry. What do you think you should be remembered about September 11th? All the lives that were lost, all the INNOCENT lives that were lost. Children on those airplanes that probably didnt even know what terrorist means or what it is. And moms, dads, sisters, brothers and friends just all those 2819 lives that were lost. Did you fly an American flag after the events of Septmeber 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes we did fly an American flag. We put them on our cars and on a tree in the front yard. Well, I think that we shouldn't take our freedom for granted and to always be proud to be an American and not to be afraid to show it. Tell us your story: I woke around 9:30 in the morning to the sounds of plane after plane flying in to land in an airport located a few miles from my home. I thought this was really strange since it was such a small airport that only had a few arrivals and departures in a 24 hour period, yet I heard 6 or 7 in 10 minutes. so I woke up and opened my front door, and at first I thought to myself this is the most beautiful day I ever remember, the sky was an imaculate blue, and the breeze of the ocean swept through the streets, then almost as quickly as that feeling came I felt the second, the streets we're lined with people talking, some crying, and the soudns of news played on my neighbor's tv set's. I knew something was wrong, but what? Me not being a real television fanatic I had no cable so I had no clue, then the telephone rang, it was my wife, she said something terrible had just happened in new york city. I thought, how could this be affecting a beach city 500 miles away? then she started to shade in the story, and my heart fell to the floor. Tell us your story: Preface: I grew up 35 miles Northeast of NYC and at the time of the attack, I worked for a company that rented medical equipment to hospitals. I was sitting on Route 3 South in Massachusetts. I had just turned on 1030 WBZ radio to get an update on the traffic. The first thing that I heard when I turned on the news was a live news feed from NYC talking about how a plane had crashed into the WTC. As I sat there listening to the radio, I began to glance around to see if anyone was listening. Much to my surprise, it looked as if no one around me had heard. I immediately got off at the next exit and took many back roads to get to my office. As I pulled up, I saw all of my co-workers huddled around the TV we had in the office. As I stepped up to the TV, I was told that a second plane had hit the second tower. At this point, my heart dropped. All I could think about were all of my friends in NY that I had grown up with. More than likely, most of them now worked in NYC. For the next several hours, we watched as the events of the day unfolded live in front of us on the TV. One co-worker left early so that she could take her children out of school. By 2pm, I knew that my co-workers and myself would be called to help out as much as possible. I had all of my co-workers getting every piece of respiratory equipment prepared and loaded into every vehicle we had. I knew that we would be called to deliver the equipment into NYC. By 3pm, the corporate office had called and told us to get ready and head to NYC. I turned to my co-workers and told them what had been asked of us. I said that two of us would have to go to NYC. I said that I couldn't ask them to go, so I had volunteered myself and was asking for one other to help out. Another co-worker said he would go. I was hesitant to let him because he and his wife had just adopted a beautiful boy and I didn't want anything to happen. He still wanted to go. Sometime around 5pm, I was finally able to call my parents on my cell phone. Up until that point, all of the cell phone circuits were busy. On the first ring, my parents picked up the phone. When they heard my voice, they sounded so happy to hear me. I really had not had the time to get hold of them earlier in the day because we were busy getting ready. When my mother heard the background noise and realized that I was on my cell phone, she asked if I was headed to NYC. I told her that we were asked to deliver everything that we had and I volunteered myself to go. The phone went quiet for about 10 seconds then she said she understood. All that she asked is that I call every now and again to tell her that I was safe. By 5:30pm we were passing trough Connecticut. It seemed eerily calm on the highway; it was pretty much deserted except for our two vehicles and the state police. By the time that we had reached the New York/Connecticut border, the corporate office had called us, re-directing us to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. The amount of people coming out of the WTC wasn't was high as expected, so the government was making Giants Stadium into a triage center so that more rescue workers and equipment could get to the WTC. By 6:30pm, we were once again re-directed, this time to the company's New Jersey office. The need for the equipment at Giants Stadium had gone down because there were no survivors coming out of the wreckage. Around 8pm, we finally arrived at the New Jersey office. As I was unloading my vehicle, I heard my cell phone ring. I didn't answer it because I was busy. When I finally hopped back into the truck, I saw that I had missed about 20 phone calls, all from the same number, my parents. I called the number back and my dad picked up instantly. He was angry because he couldn't get hold of me. This was the first time in my life that I have ever heard my father afraid. His voice kept breaking as he talked to me. I heard from my mother the next day that he wasn't home when I called at 5pm, he was still working. When he got home, my mother was staring at the TV mesmerized. My dad had asked what had happened and she told him that I was headed to NYC to help out. He looked at her like she was kidding, but he realized that she wasn't. He couldn't believe how calm she was. She said that she had had over 2 hours to come to grips with it. I finally got home around 1am on September 12. I wasn't going to call my parents, but I figured that I should. My dad picked up the phone again on the first ring. He sounded so relieved to here my voice. If anyone knows the NY/NJ border area at Route 17 South in Mahwah, as I was passing from 17 South to Interstate 287 South, I could see the smoke from the WTC there. If you know this area, it is a tremendous distance from the site. I want to thank all of the people that helped out in any fashion during all of the cleanup and recovery. My heart goes out to all the wives, husbands, and especially the children left behind from the attack. I was supposed to go to class on the morning of Sept. 11, but then my teacher called and told me to stay home. She told me of frightening stories about Muslims working in Washington D.C. being harassed. After the phone call, I immediately turned on the TV and gaped at the horrifying scene like many other Americans. Later that day, my dad came home early and said that he heard the explosion at the Pentagon while he was in his class at the National Defense University, just across the Potomac River from the Pentagon. For several weeks, my dad, who's in the U.S. Air Force, warned my mom and I not to go anywhere. He especially warned us not to go to commissary at Fort Belvoir. The servicemen there wouldn't be happy to see two women wearing hijab shopping alongside them. I felt helpless staying at home. Like many others, I wanted to reach out and help. So a couple of months later, I organized a blood drive in my neighborhood to honor the victims of 9/11. It was the first year that she wasn't at home to celebrate it with us as she was a Freshman at the University of Alabama. I kid her about her birthdays being so dramatic. She was born on the first ever "Grandparent's Day" which made it every special for the new grandparents. And, now, this on her 18th. Because this national tragedy happened on her birthday, we'll never be able to forget it! I remember the horror as I watched everything unfold in a waiting room in our Outpatient Center. I couldn't believe something like this happened! I was saddened for the families who lost loved ones on the planes as well as in the office buildings. I felt the horror that those jumping out of windows and being trapped on the floors must have felt. I felt the hopelessness that the victims' families must have felt. I went to my office and cried for all of these and myself. This type of thing made me want to gather all of my family around me to make sure they were safe. It was very hard that my daughter was 3 1/2 hours away. We must have talked on the phone a dozen times that day. As the days unfolded, I got angry! I got angry at the terrorists who did this! I was angry at media that wouldn't leave the victims' families alone. It's like they all wanted to have the "exclusive" story. I was angry at those who tried to "cash in" on our loss, i.e., gas prices rising a $1.00 a gallon in a matter of several hours, rumors of a huge reduction in gas supplies, so that everyone ran to get gas at these escalated prices, as well as other tactics/products sprang up. I was angry at the money swindling scams that erupted with everyone soliciting funds for the "victims". Many of these were not legitimate. And, in some way, I have grown to be angry at some of the victims' families. I think it's a sick world we live in when some people try to say their loved one died in the Trade Center to cash in on the money and the person was found to be alive elsewhere. I am also very upset with some of the victims' families that said $1.2 million + just "wasn't enough." Think about all of the people who die everyday in America. Many without any type of savings or life insurance whatsoever. The majority of the people in the World Trade Center and most on the planes were business people employed by big name corporations who provided life insurance free and plans where you could purchase more! No one compensates the ones who die every day without anything. I don't recall that all the victims of the Oklahoma Federal Building bombing getting in the millions of dollars from the government! This was not the governments fault! Society today needs to learn that tragedies happen for which we are not prepared for. But, life must go on and we do whatever it takes to keep going. No one, but the terrorists are responsible for what happened on 9/11. If will always be a somber day on September 11. Even as the years roll on and Americans become numb and don't remember as well, I'll always remember for it was also my daughter's 18th birthday! We arrived on the afternoon of Monday 10th September 2001 and were staying at the Pennsylvania Hotel. We planned to go to Staten Island on the ferry if we woke early the next morning in order to avoid the "rush hour". We awoke on Tuesday 11th September and fortunately we had slept well and so decided to go another day. We started breakfast in the hotel coffee shop around 8.30am and were surprised that we had not woken earlier. It was such a beautiful day with clear blue skies and we were so excited to be in New York at last as we were celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary on the 14th. We saw the second plane hit the South Tower of the World Trade Centre live on TV in the hotel lobby whilst still trying to find out the extent of the first hit on the North Tower. Later whilst standing in the street we saw the North tower collapse. We heard about the pentagon attack on the radio of a car parked in the street surrounded by a crowd of people anxious to hear what was happening. Everyone walked the streets in a shocked state waiting to hear of any further news. We tried to phone home but no phones were working. Jet fighters flew overhead to protect new York from further attack but every time one was heard everyone looked anxiously towards the sky. Day and night the sound of ambulance, police and fire sirens were heard non-stop. Convoys of trucks carrying lifting gear and arc lights rumbled through the streets and fighter jets flew overhead 24 hours a day. We felt the need to be outside in the open rather than staying in the hotel that evening. The only traffic on the streets were the emergency vehicles. It was eerily quiet with few people about. We were tired but so restless. We walked down 7th Avenue with not a car in sight. Only the night before it had been full of traffic and people but now it was the opposite. Everyone we met including police officers, fire fighters and ordinary citizens showed every concern for our safety and wellbeing as visitors to their city. We all just tried to help one another in whatever way we could. We were in New York from 10th - 17th September and during that time we greatly admire the way in which the American people dealt with such a difficult situation. Since returning to England we have found it very difficult to settle back into normal life again. Tell us your story: it started out like most mornings, watching the today show as i always do (my morning staple show), the only difference was that this morning, i was overly tired, for as my dog had given birth to a liter of 5 pups through the night, but needless to say that did not stop my 1 yr. old from his early rise...see, his daddy had just left for work, and he almost always gives him a kiss bye bye...so our day has begun...my mother, brother, son & myself sat in the living room, when i heard matt lauer mention something about the world trade center, then they cut immediately to a commercial, i knew then that something was terribly wrong...then minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, month by month, we watched as the horrible events of that day changed our country forever..as katie couric returned after the commercial, we saw our first pictures of the tower...my brother said "its terrorists", my son was riding his rocking cow, laughing aloud, my mother said "oh todd, no it couldnt be", i did not know what to think, just then we watched the other plane go thru the second tower...we all sat in disbelief...today it has been a year, in some ways it has gone quickly, but i'm sure that for all of the grieving families, it has been the longest year of their lives...i can only imagine the pain that they are all going thru, and i pray for all of them that this day of remembrance has been also one of healing. my thoughts are with them all, everyday. through this all, i feel the country has more of a closeness, more patriotism, more love, more respect, more gratitude...why does it always take a tradgedy, for us all to realize how lucky we are to live here. i have been keeping a journal for my son, since the day i found out i was pregnant...that day i wrote "the world will never be the same", i hope i will never have an entry such as that ever again...lorri lee iglar 9/11/02 Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Tell us your story: When the first plane hit the tower the first thing to go through my mind was that some suicidal person had flown a personal airplane into the tower. Then I saw the footage of the massive airplane, loaded with jet fuel, crash into the tower. I was devastated watching the fireball fly through the building and out the other side. During break that day another plane it the south tower, and another hit the pentagon. I knew that my parents were probably safe, but I still wanted proof because they work near the Pentagon. When I first heard about the plane hitting the Pentagon, someone told me that a plane had landed near the Pentagon. As far as I knew the plane had hit the Washington Navy yard were my mother and father work. Thankfully they were okay. But still many of my friends had parents that worked at the pentagon. Later I would learn that one of my friends dad had his computer and everything in his office thrown out of position when the plane hit. We stoppd to pick up my friend like we do every morning. So, we get to school and our first hour is P.E. Then we go upstairs for Math and we sit down and our teacher asks for prayer requests. Well, before she prays she says I want to pray for whatever's going on in New York at the WTC towers. Once we got done praying we began our lesson and our principal walks in and says," One of the WTC towers have bee hit by a plane we'll keep you updated." I remember turning back to the board and hearing the door open again. It was the principal again and she said that we were going down to the gym towatch the news because this was serious. I started to worry, I mean it's not often we get to miss classes to watch TV. I figured this has to be bad. So, we got down to the gym and we sat down on the floor and no sooner than we fix are attention on the TV a second plane flies into the other tower and everyone got real quiet. Then the news anchors started saying this is no accidebt. So a bunch of us 13 and 14 year olds are sitting there wondering what in the world is going on. Then the news anchor says it was a terrorist attack and then it hit me. All the people, the people in the building. I kept thinking "oh my gosh" "oh my gosh" who would this. Then we look back at the screen and I'm crying and my friend is crying and we're waiting for more news when the tower crumbles. All I could do was pray and cry and think about the people who died. Then the second one falls and I nearly screamed. All i could think of was the thousands of people who died, the children without fathers, the wives without husbands , the brothers without sisters , the friends without friends. I don't think anything scares me more tha what happened on 9/11. I had never bee so deeply scared or sad before. My cousin worked a couple blocks from the WTC towers and i was so scared for her. She survived as did others. It angers me to think osama bin Ladan did what he thought was right. As much as i'd absolutly like to hate him I can't. God tells us to love our enemies and pray for them and that's what i do. 9/11 will never be forgotten, nor will the people who died or the ones who saved lives. When I came to BMCC that day I was walking from the WTC and I didn't know that two hours from then the building would be gone. When I was in my sociology class we were told to evacuate the building. At first I thought that it was just a fire drill. But when I went out I saw a woman shaking her head and other people looking up toward the WTC. When I looked up I saw the north tower burning and thought that it was an accident and I wanted to know why no one has done anything to stop the building from burning. After a few minutes the whole WTC complex had fallen and I was running up to Harrison St. I was also crying because I was thinking about my mother who works at tower 7. When I arrived at Harrison St seaport I met a woman named Betty who escorted me to a near by school where I can call my parents. I tried to call them at another building nearby a car shop but their cell phones weren't working. So when Betty and I were at the school I immediately called my uncle and he told me that my mother was okay and that everyone was just hopping that I would be okay. I felt very relieved about that. In the school I also heard a man's voice on a radio saying that this was an act of terrorism and that we were at war. That is when I started getting upset again because I hate wars. After that Betty and took about three trains to go by 9th avenue where we parted. She started walking up to her house and I had to take the B41 to Eastern Parkway. Then I walked to my grandmother's house. At my grandmother's house everyone was there happy to see me. I told them what happened and they were very shocked. My mom has made it back home. The four of us had expected to stay for two weeks in Brittany, but a problem with the accommodations prompted us to leave early. So we headed for Normandy, where we had expected to spend a few days seeing Bayeux and Rouen before our friends' flight home on September 13 and our flight home from Paris on September 18. Given the time of year, we took less than satisfactory lodging in a small gite in the village of Reviers- no television, no radio, no telephone. I'm an American historian - a New Yorker born and bred, now living in Washington, D.C. - and I had no particular interest in battle sites and we had no intention of visiting the landing beaches. But with more than a week (we'd arrived on Sunday, September 9), we decided we would see what there was to see. The town larger than a crossroads we were closest to, Courseulles-sur-Mer, we found out was the only port not closed by the Germans during WW II because it was so tiny. The wartime code name at Courseulles was Juno Beach, where the Canadians had landed on D-Day. Our first stop on September 11, at around 2 p.m. (8 a.m. EDT) was Arromanches, where the British installed Mulberry Harbor, the astonishing engineering feat that allowed the Normandy invasion to succeed without access to a sizable French port. Mulberry Harbor had been built in Britain, towed in pieces a hundred miles across the Channel and installed in 12 days about midway along the Normandy coast. The prefabricated harbor permitted the Allies to supplement and provision their troops throughout the liberation of France. Pieces of the breakwater remain within today with sight of the beach. We were awed by the sheer audacity of the conception - Churchill's - and the fabulous success of the Royal Engineering Corps. We then continued driving west along the coast, to Omaha Beach where the Americans had landed, taking tremendous losses because the air support had not succeeded in eliminating the German bunkers. We arrived at the American cemetery around 5:00 (11:00 EDT). The rows of crosses, with the occasional Star of David, recall Arlington National Cemetery, while the Channel beach of Colleville-sur-Mer runs along side below the cliff. Around 6:00, we headed back to Courseulles for dinner. We arrived at La Trottoria, an Italian restaurant on the Rue de la Mer in Courseulles, around 7. We'd eaten there before and so the staff knew we were Americans. After we were seated, the one waitress who could speak a little English asked if we had seen a television. We said we hadn't. Looking drawn, she said that the World Trade Center had been bombed and collapsed. The other waitress made a motion with her hands: holding them before her, horizontally, the bottom hand facing up and her top hand facing down, she clapped them together. No, we said. Not possible. Yes, they insisted. The World Trade Center had been attacked and collapsed. I thought that they had watched a movie and mistaken a contrived scene for reality. The waitress who spoke English asked if I would like to go upstairs to her apartment above the restaurant to see the television, an invitation I accepted. Her apartment, in which her mother also resided, was tiny - a living room and dining room combination with a sofa and table that could not have measured more than 8 feet by 5 feet. But a large t.v. sat in the bookcase in the wall, playing images over and over again of the Towers in flames, combusting as if a volcano. I understood only a little of the French commentary but after watching long enough to convince myself that this was not "War of the Worlds," I went back downstairs to my companions to tell them that it was true - the World Trade Center had been attacked and collapsed. As we grappled with this news, I felt as if I had to hear an English-language report. We left the restaurant and raced down the tiny street in the tiny town to a small hotel that also had a restaurant. We walked up to the desk and I asked the hostess in French (she didn't speak English) if she had a television with an English-language station on it. She frowned, as if the request were absurd. But then she realized that we were American and her expression changed instantly to one of compassion. She took out her reservation book, located an empty room, took us up the narrow stair, opened the door to a room, turned on the light, placed two chairs in front of the television, which she tuned to the BBC, and said in French that we should stay as long as we liked. We stayed about half an hour, watching again in disbelief as the BBC anchors repeated over and over again the little they or anyone knew. We were stricken, but there seemed no point to staying, so we turned off the t.v., went downstairs to thank our hostess and returned to the restaurant, where our friends were waiting. We told them the little we had found out and, with not much else to do, finished dinner. I don't remember what we talked about. At about 10:00, we realized that if we went back to the gite, we would have no information; the only radio we had was in the car. We knew from driving along the coastline that it was possible to hear the BBC from certain points. (We hadn't yet discovered Radio 4, the long-wave station, that we could hear all over Normandy.) So at 10 p.m. (4 p.m., EDT), we drove to Juno Beach, tuned the radio to the BBC and listened in the dark at the edge of the water to their correspondents in New York describe the devastation. Interspersed with the commentary were the reactions of European leaders, most particularly Tony Blair, who was all one could hope for in a leader - thoughtful, intelligent, humane, and loyal. We spent that hour on Juno Beach listening to European expressions of sympathy and alliance. Then we went home to bed. For the next few days, we tried to get up early to get the few English language papers available, French papers when the English ones were gone. After a day or two, we discovered that we could access the web from official tourist offices in Bayeux and Caen and we spent hours reading the news, chiefly from the Washington Post website - CNN was too busy. It took us two days to get a telephone line out of France. We didn't think to go to a church service, and so we had no ceremonies to console us; we just wanted to feel connected to home. Our friends left for Paris on September 12, sure that their flight would leave as scheduled on September 13. They actually returned on September 18, after we did. (They both worked for the U.S. government, so their extra week in Paris was not charged against their annual leave, a little irony under the circumstances.) Because we could not possibly get home, we spent our time visiting churches and war memorials, which seemed at least in keeping with our feelings. We visited the Canadian, British and even the German cemeteries, all done appropriately, including the last. If we could not be home, we were grateful to be in Normandy; virtually everyone (with the exception of our horrible landlords) treated us with the greatest tenderness and sympathy, none of the pervasive anti-American feeling typical of Paris. Though more than fifty years have passed, Americans are still "liberators" to the Norman French. We had plenty to see. Almost every village along the Normandy coast has a small museum and a memorial marking an event associated with the Allied landing, and each memorial has the Allied flags flying side by side in a row. After September 11, all the flags - not just the American flag - flew at half-staff. We began heading toward Paris on September 16, staying at bed and breakfasts, still without television, although I had acquired a pocket radio on which we could hear the BBC almost constantly. Our last night, however, we did have a t.v., and American companions to dine with, all of us grateful for the company. On September 18, Rosh Hashanah, we arrived as directed three hours early for our flight on American Airlines from Charles De Gaulle Airport. Three flights were leaving one after the other: to Houston, to Miami, and to Washington. Virtually all the passengers were American, the French delaying their trips under the circumstances. So about 600 of us stood shoulder to shoulder for several hours, just inside the terminal door, with no security - the most harrowing part of the trip. Once on the plane, an inexperienced and reduced cabin crew added little to our sense of well-being. The crossing was, thankfully, uneventful, but it was a big ocean that day and when we flew into Kennedy Airport, we could see the Empire State Building holding up the sky alone. We knew when we left Paris that we were not going to connect from New York to fly into National Airport, which was closed indefinitely. Not eager to get on a plane again in any case, we rented a car and drove to Great Neck, New York, to see my elderly father. I had originally expected to visit the following Saturday via the USAir Shuttle from National to LaGuardia, but that plan was clearly impossible. We drove home the following day and went back to New York to see him again on October 6. We also made the trip downtown Manhattan to pay our respects to the site as we had paid our respects at the American cemetery in Normandy. We couldn't see very much from the pathways laid out for visitors, but the acrid smell will not soon fade from memory. Given my father's failing health and the closure of National Airport, in the next two months I made five car trips between New York and Washington and moved my father to a nursing home here. I had been flying the round-trip between New York and Washington twice a month for about three years; after September 11, the next time I flew was March 25. But on March 18, we traveled by train to see the memorial lights. Alas, the day was wet and foggy. I had concluded - based upon a New Yorker's ostensible savvy - that the best place to see the lights would be from the Staten Island ferry (now free, not the nickel it used to cost). We took the 5:30 ferry to the barren Staten Island terminal. Waiting for the 7:00 ferry back from Staten Island, we had coffee and wine in a place called "Rudy and Dean's" near the ferry terminal. They had a big plate glass window but you couldn't even see Manhattan, it was so foggy. The waitress there talked about the friend she had lost in the Tower, a fire fighter. On the return ferry trip, about 5 miles across New York harbor, I despaired, standing outside in the fog and rain. But as we got nearer, the fog actually lifted a little. The haze made the lights seem even more spectral -- they appeared and disappeared as the boat moved toward lower Manhattan. So, in a way, the view was perfect. I have a photograph of the Towers on my wall. I'm one of the few New Yorkers that loved them from the beginning. A fan of the Bauhaus school, I always thought them perfect in their spare and clean surfaces. The celebrations at Windows on the World over the years - the last in February 2001, a first anniversary party for a 62-year-old friend who found the love of her life later than some of us - seemed magical. I could trace the streets in my home borough of Brooklyn almost perfectly - Flatbush Avenue from the Manhattan Bridge across the whole of Brooklyn and over the Marine Parkway Bridge to Rockaway. The photograph of the Towers is next to the photograph of Mont-Saint-Michel, off the Normandy coast, which we visited before September 11 while we were still staying in Brittany. We stayed overnight on the island and came away smitten by the magnificent gesture of the statue at the peak: "The Archangel loved heights." But the human spirit of the two monuments seems to me the same: Anchored on the ground, we reach into the sky and the genius of human creativity permits us to succeed at it. Even the Nazis left Mont-Saint-Michel untouched. The attackers of the World Trade Center, murderers taking thousands of lives, also insulted the divinity residing in human creativity. When the teachers all went into the hallways talking we thought of it as a party because all we new was there was no teacher in the room. Then Ms.Smith came into the room and turned on the TV. She tried to explain to us how there are some bad people in this world and how we are lucky to be where we were. Some kids started crying. I remember that the phone lines were tied because so many kids were calling home. Almost the hole scool went home that day but me and some other students. I was mad because they all got the day off. After I realized what was happening I began to worry about my aunt. She lives in New York with my cousins and her husband and she works in a building right next to the twin towers. What seemed like a lifetime my mom finally came and picked me up. We called my dad to see if he was ok. He said he was fine but he wouldn't be back untill later that night because he is a police officer and has to help out with the pentagon and stuff. My mom was crying and tried to explain to me and my sister what was going on. Then she started calling all of our family members to see how they were doing. Later that day I went outside to walk my dog and I ran into my neighbor. She asked how I was doing and then I remembered it was her birthday. I felt so bad because who would want to have a birthday on a day when everyone is sad. I told her happy birthday and then she said thankyou and went in her house crying. That night we stayed up and watched the news. My parents told us how gratefull we should be. You never really know what you've got untill it's gone. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work. Someone menitioned that the WTC was hit by a plane. I had no TV, just a radio. So I got on line. It took a long time to get on line. I guess a lot of people were doing the same. As the day's events unfolded, I still had a job to do. Work was going on as if nothing has happened. I mean, we still had to load and ship Mack Truck engines to our customers. At one point, I said to a friend, "we act like nothing has happened. Don't you understand that we have just witnessed the start of a war. We are at war. This won't end today. This will go on for years." As a Gulf War Vet., I know the taste of war. As an instructor at Gettysburg, I know that the bodies of that great battle were not all recovered until the following March. I did not want to think how long it would take at the WTC. I was to leave the Marine Corps after 20 years. I was lucky my continuance was approved until 2005. I pray for them and think of them constantly. It is like the whole United States stood still on tha tday. We all, as a nation, stood for one purpose whether we are republican or democrats. We stood for we ar not going to tolerate any terroism in this country. Whom ever is responsible for this is going to pay dearly, as he should. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in my bedroom sleeping when the first plane hit the first tower. I was pregnant for my little boy. When I came down stairs my mom was watching television. I thought that it was a program until she told me that a a plane had hit the world trade center. I asked her wjat she said because i was not sure wheather or not i had heard her correctly so i asked her again and she told me the same thing again i had so many questions running through my head and i just started asking her. i said did i fly out of control? she said no one knows what happened yet. Then when the second plane hit she said no it is a terrorist act. I was so scared that day you couldn't even look at me because i started to cry. when president bush made his speech that night i was in tears i couldn't sleep for like 2-3 nights i was so scared that the world was coming to an end. i was not ready for that to happen and i was starting to think that i was dumb for bringing a little baby in to this world with all that was happening. everybody convinced me that it was going to be okay to this day i still don't know if everything is oging to be okay i hope it is because i wasnt to see my little boy grow up and go to schoool get married and eerything. inside i still have a scared feeling that somethign else is going to happen but alls i can do is hope that nothing does. i have family over in the war and it scares me to know that they not be comming home my soon to be husband is going tin to hte navy to help this country get throught his and fight for his country. i think that everyone is scared it the fact of them admiting it. wha tbohters me alot is you only here about the world trade centers most of the time. what about the pentagon or even the plane ammed for the president you hardly ever here abot that. them innocent people took the plane down to save the president they knew that they were going to die so they took it down in an open field they are the heroes also well that is my stoy of hows i felt and what i did and what i think about the way people are approching this Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: That morning was like any other morning. I was walking down the hallway to class at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, P.A. As I was walking an administrator, who knew me very well and my pride in being a New Yorker, stopped me and told me that a plane flew into the World Trade Center. I looked at her, laughed and said, "Get out of here." "No I'm serious she said, and she ran off." I then started walking, still not believing and understanding. I then knew that something didn't make sense. I looked up and I saw it on the t.v. in Maura Solarium. Kids, and adults, everybody was gathered around watching it in awe. People were crying, but I couldn't say anything. I then left, and ran to my floor, and watched it all happen in t.v The destruction of my city, and I had to watch it on t.v., I thought. I then realized that the towers fell, my mother was a nurse that helped the victims at St. Vincent Hospital, and my one true girlfirend Melissa was in the towers but thank God escaped with minor injuries. I now day by day struggle to recover, with Almighty God's help. I LOVE YOU NEW YORK, ALWAYZ AND FOREVER.
