Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had worked a midnight shift as a dispatcher, at the Keesler Air Force Base Fire Department. I went straight to bed. I had been asleep about an hour when I got a call from the fire department saying everyone was on standby. Then I got another call from my husband saying they tried to blow up the World Trade Center again (re: 1993 bombing). He said it was all on television. After that I knew I couldn't sleep until I knew what was going on, so I got up and turned on the TV. I saw video of the first plane and the first tower burning. Then I watched, in horror, just as most of America did, and saw the second plane hit the other building. I knew then, we were under attack! My son was living in New York City at the time and I knew he was close to that area. I was extremely worried. I couldn't cry, I couldn't really do anything until he was able to get through to me on the phone. He said he was watching the small TV in his van and the news broke in and showed the 1st plane hitting the tower. He was only 10 blocks from the Trade Center, he then turned and looked toward the trade center and actually witnessed the second plane go into the other tower. After I talked to him and thanked God that he was safe I could finally cry for those lost in the attacks on New York and the Pentagon. Being a member of a fire department took on a whole new meaning after the terrorist attack. I pray it never happened again, but I guarantee that it won't be as easy next time. More than one group of passengers will stop the terrorists short of their intended targets. God Bless America!!!! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11 started as any day. I am an occupational therapy practioner that works in the school system. I was looking forward to a trip to the dollar store to help children from our community based junior high program work on shopping skills. I was only at the school a few minutes when someone gave us the news that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. At that time the first thoughts were that is so sad. Thinking it was a small plane and that it was an accident. Now the children start arriving at school. Some teachers have turned on T.V. sets and we see the second plane hit the other tower. It was such a feeling of despair. Something really bad is happening but we don't know enough about what is happening to share information with the school children yet. The principal sends a memo that says he too only knows what is being broadcast, and continue school as normal, and we will get updates throughout the day. I call my own daughters highschool and ask if they are taking any different steps, should I come get her, are they informing the students what is happening? They inform me some parents are picking up there students but there is no need to. The teachers at the school I am working at make a decision to go on our community trip as planned. We are on the way to the store when an announcement comes over the bus radio telling all buses within the Chicago city limits to get out of the city. Now it is coming even closer to home. We do go to the store, there is no one on the roads every shop owner is glued to the radio or T.V. We head back to school. At this time for the kids that are left at the school (many parents picked there kids up)it is decided to bring T.V.'s into the classroom and share information with the students. It was difficult there were many questions but I think it was important for them to be a part of what was going on. At my daughters school they decided not to let them watch T.V. I understand why they did this but since they were highschool students it was very confusing for them. They were hearing enough chatter in the hall that terrible things were happening but were not given enough information to comprehend what was occuring. We as many Americans spent the next days getting every bit of information we could, mourning the loss of our citizens and wanting action on those who could have done such a thing. Since the 9/11 event a year ago we went to Chicago to see the exhibit of photos taken at ground zero. It was moving and there was such a connection to others that were there. It was like a wake and everyone there was part of a family to remember the victims. Then we went to New York City and went to ground zero. Again it was a feeling of connection, a feeling of empathy for the victims families, trying to image how they feel and knowing that it could be any one of our own families that this could have happened to. As a country we must stay strong, stay connected, never forget, and never let this happen again. I walked into my first period English class and my best friend Jessica looked up at me and said "We're at war!" Ilooked at her and shook my head. Then she told me someone had flown a plane into the world trade center. I remember thinking "No one is stupid enough to attack America." I couldn't have been more wrong. I watched the towers come down second period and found out about the pentagon and the plane in Pennsylvania in third period. It was like watching my worst nightmare. We rarely had the TV on, except while I was in the shower. I had just stepped out of the shower, pressed "stop" on the VCR and I saw a breaking news story on the TV. I don't often pay attention to the breaking news stories, becuase things like OJ Simpson have desensitized me to "big news stories". For whatrever reason, I did keep in on and shortly realized the World Trade Center was on fire. I held my baby close and continued to watch, witnessing the second plane crashing in to th second tower as it happened live in my bedroom. I called my father. He was aware of the situation and was very concerned about the people in the building. Oh my god, I thought to myself, the human loss is going to be horrific! I haden't even thought about that yet. Then the president came on TV, calling this an act iof terror, shaking my world (and literally my whole body) up. My family eventually met up at my sister's home in Millburn. Her husband was the only one in the city working in midtown. She could not reach him by phone but had received an e-mail from him saying that he is alright. We all sat, staring at the TV all day, except for making frantic phone calls to our friends and extended family who lived or worked in the city. We did not know anyone directly involved in the attacks. We all hugged eachother a lot that day, and continue to do so today. A call came in by cell phone that I needed to get to a TV because we were under attack! I had no idea what the caller meant. I drove to Fire Station 4 and walked into the ready room and joined the others who were watching TV. There on the TV I could see the first tower on fire. At first the talk was that it was some sort of air disaster, I mean how could you hit a building like that...it had to be an accident. As we were discussing and guessing what was happening the second plane showed up and hit the other tower. For an instant everyone was stunned, no one spoke. My first comment was "Osama bin Laden". Somehow in my very being I knew he had to be behind this. It was truly insane and certainly the mind of a deranged person. I couldn't watch anymore and went back to my truck and had the radio on after that. When I heard the Pentagon had been hit my heart sunk even more. I could not believe there were more planes in the sky full of terrorists. For the next few hours every story on the radio had me wondering when would it end. Finally the last plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. It was over. But it will never be over as long as we allow tyrants and lunatics to threaten the fiber of our great nation. We will only be at peace when all our enemies are defeated. Not bargained or negotiated with but destroyed. This time peace will not come with the olive branch but by the sword. I was getting ready to go out when I heard the broadcast over the local T.V. station. It wasn't real to me for a good reason. A few years before I moved to Colorado I went to a job interview at the World Trade Center. As I was riding up in the elevator to go to my interview, the elevator started swaying back and forth. I got very scared and decided not to go ahead to the job interview. Who knows what may have happened if I had went ahead and gotten that job that day. I might not be here to write this story. I turned on the television in time to hear about the second crash. My son-in-law had just passed by there the night before and told what a lovely sight it was that night. I was caring for my grandchildren at that time because their parents were working. Their father, a truck driver, was in Pennsylvania and couldn't get home. The children came home from school and told me all about some "bad people who crashed into some big buildings and a lot of people died." My then five year old grandson, Billy, started clinging to me and seemed very sad. I thought it was because of the bad news. One afternoon I asked him if he was afraid. He sadly nodded his head yes. I told him that he didn't have to worry because he was safe with his family and that we all love him. I explained that what happened wasn't going to happen here and that the bad people who did this terrible thing would be punished. When we started talking about the rescuers that were helping to save the people who were trapped in the debris, he asked me about his daddy. I had told the children that their father was stuck in PA and poor Billy thought that his daddy was trapped in one of the buildings. I held him close and cried as I explained that his daddy was safe in his truck and he would be home as soon as the roads were opened again and he could travel. His school councelor is working with him today because the world is reliving this tragedy and he is still having a difficult time dealing with it. Our hearts, prayers, and love go out to those who lost loved ones last 9-ll and to those who are fighting for our country today. We owe them all a great debt of gratitude. He had been asleep in bed when one of the other kids on the floor came in and said something happened at the WTC. Matt jumped out of bed, threw on some clothes, and got a train downtown. He was able to get about 10 blocks from the WTC just as the 1st tower collapsed. He tried to get closer,but was told to turn around and go back by the police. He was covered with dust when he arrived back at school, just after the collapse of the second tower. He said it was the most amazing thing he'd ever witnessed. Left for work at 7:00am to go to our meeting that day at 7:30am. I was 6 months pregnant at the time, and it was a very happy time in my life. My husband was facing his first baby (boy) and as happy as can be about it. Our first break from the meeting came up at 10:00am as I walked out of the room in to the "break/lunch" room, the TV was on....and tons of people standing around it, I of course wondered what all the commotion was all about as I squeezed in between people to see it (being pregnant it was not easy). Then I saw......my heart fell to the floor, and the blood from my head ran down to my feet. I stood there and watched in horror and I could not belive what I saw. Being emotional enough as it was with horomones flowing through me, I felt like all those people were my family. I feel for everyone of you who lost someone that day....I too have lost a loved one. Not that day, but it was over 20 yrs ago, I was 9 yrs old, my brother was 10. My brother, whom had a rough life I found, had commited suicide at age 10. All of those feelings I had that day...came back. I sent my best to all of you, and may you still celebrate birthdays, and New Years, and Christmas..because if you don't, then you give our enemies the satisfaction. I worked the 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. shift and was still sleeping that morning at about 9:15 a.m. (Est) when my telephone rang. Generally, I would let my voice mail pick up my early calls, because they ususally were telemarketers with a sales pitch I just didn't want to hear about. But on this particular morning, that ringing of my phone seemed different. I answered. My friend Michelle was on the other end. "Turn on your T.V. right now!" she said. "A plane has just crashed into one of the twin towers in New York." Still not quite awake, I must have answered with..."What did you say?" "Debbie, just turn on your damn T.V., it's horrible", she shouted. With my remote phone still in my hand, I ran to the living room and turned on the T.V. There is was, in living, breathing, color. The news man looking serious, like the times when presidents have been shot, or when annoucing that we are going to war. Somehow I could not get my mind to grasp what had happened. It was playing out before me like a plot to a movie I had already seen. My friend was still talking on the phone that was now glued to my ear. I don't think I heard anything she said. Truthfully, I thought I might be dreaming! Unfortunately, I was not. The rest of that day played out like a dream, however. My daughter was in school. Do I need to go get her? Where do I go? What do we do? Are we next? My mom, she lives 100 miles away! WHAT DO I DO????!!!!I called her immediately. I live on a now closed Air Force Base, and many of us who reside here have jokingly said that what if our enemies abroad don't know that this is a closed military base, we would definitely be a target in a bombing strike. Now that joking comment came back to haunt many of us. This is a day I will remember always. It is the day that changed my feelings of security and isolation from the harsh realities that we are not exempt as a nation from war in our own country. I was 9 months pregnant and due on the 13th of September, and I had contractions all weekend long. It was about 8:00am that morning and I was watching cartoons with my daughter, and I was still having contractions. We didnt get any local channels so I didnt know anything was going on. I called my grandmother who live right down the road, about 10:00am that morning, and I told her to be on the lookout and that I might need her to watch my daughter. She said ok, and isnt awful was happened. I said what happen, she said arent you watching tv, i said yes but im watching cartoons with her. And she started telling me what was going on and i was shocked. I couldnt believe something like that had happened. And of course i couldnt watch it no local channels. I was just stunned. I kept having contractions and i called my husband to let him know to come home we were going to the hospital. In the mean time i put my daughter down for a nap, and I took a shower. While i was in there i just couldnt believe everything that was going on. I got out of the shower, got ready, got my daughter ready, and waited for my husband to come home. He got home, he washed up, and we were on our way. I dropped my daughter off at my aunts, and then went through mcdonalds drive through,(my husband was hungry). So we went to the hospital and they admitted me. I asked the doctor if my child would be born on this day, and he said no, the baby should come after midnight, so that realived me. But guess what, the baby didnt wait. My son Kolten was born 9:35PM that evening. I just was amazed. With everything wrong, and people losing their family, friends, and loved ones, i had a beautiful baby boy in my hand. We had brought another living soul in this world. So September 11, 2001 hold many memorys. Through all the bad that was happening, something good came out of that day. My teacher had the radio on which was very unlike her. I was one of the first into the room and as my other classmates walked into the room, who also had no idea what was going on, they asked what was going on. My teacher began to explain that a plane had flown into one of the Twin Towers. I didn't think anything of it at the time. "Planes crash, I thought, "One just happened to hit the tower." I didn't really understand what was going on. Then she said that nobody knew why it hit or anything but then another one hit. Nobody really knew what was going on but they thought it was a terrist attack. It was all very shocking and I had never experienced anything like it before so I didn't really understand what was going on. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had been placed on bedrest the last weeks of my pregnancy and was asleep when the phone range shortly after 6:00 PST. My cousin, Michelle, was calling to tell me to turn on the TV, that the Towers had just been hit. I laughed at her and told her to quit teasing, that I wasn't going to fall for her joke. She told me she wasn't joking, and in the tone she used, I knew she was serious. So, I turned on the TV and didn't stop watching the footage for the next week. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't do anything but stare in disbelief at the news as I watched the footage of the planes hitting the towers over and over and over again. Then when I was watching, the first tower fell and a few minutes later, the second tower fell. I remember the tears springing to my eyes as I realized that all those people died as they were trying to escape. I imagined how I would have felt as I tried to run down the stairs, feeling panicked as people went slow in front of me. I would have wanted to push people out of the way, so I could get to safety. I can imagine people all felt the same way, but acted so differently. I am constantly inspired by the stories I hear of strangers helping others and hope that if I were in the face of danger and fear as they were, I would have the courage to be as noble and brave as they who gave their lives for others. My son wasn't born until October 10, 2001, and I think he was so overdue because maybe I couldn't give birth to him until I was more composed. Jokingly I tell people that he could hear the news footage in utero, and he was scared to be born into a world so evil and wicked. He is the light of my life, bringing me joy daily as he learns to walk and say a few words. I know that he has been my gift from God to help my heart heal and restore my hope in humanity. God bless America and all those who gave their lives to help their brother survive to go home to their families, for they really were the perfect example of our Savior's perfect love for us all. Tell us your story: The day, September 11, 2001 started just like any other day for me: I got up in the morning, took a shower, got dressed, and sat down to eat my breakfast and when I finished eating my breakfast I brushed my teeth and finished getting dressed and then I went to the living room where I waited for my ride to pick me up and take me to work. Fortunately I did not have to wait for very long because my ride arrived and we went to work at the library where we signed in after we arrived and began preparing to greet the patrons who were waiting outside for the library to open up and since we still had about 20 or 25 minutes left before we opened up, my coworkers and I went to the staff room where we drank some coffee and talked for a while and that was when time came to a standstill for me because at exactly 9:15, a.m., on the morning of September 11, 2001 one of the librarians came into the staff room with a look of horror and disbelief on her face. Naturally, we all asked her what was wrong and at first our message did not register, so to speak, because she just stood there with her mouth agape, so we asked her a second time and the first words out of her mouth were, "Gentlemen you are not going to believe me! An airplane has just crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City!" Upon hearing this, our first reaction was that of shock as well as disbelief and we all just stood there-including myself dazed, as if were in a trance and before long I broke out in a cold sweat. After that I tried to speak, but couldn't because my mouth was so dry that I could not speak. At first I did not, could not believe what she had just said until she said, "If you all don't believe me, then just watch the news on TV!" And we did and that was when I saw the tragic scene being played out right before my very eyes. At that point, all of us, myself included just stood there looking at the images on the TV screen and at each other and then I suggested that we all observe one minute of silence in memory of the victims and I also suggested that we all say a prayer in memory of the victims. As you turn on the television; you are trying to get dressed for work, you can't believe what you are hearing and seeing. More attacks, the pentagon and then a plane went down in PA. Our President being flown all over the place and our Vice President being hidden. This can't be true...but it was. All day long you listen to the radio; trying to work, you come home to listen more to the television. So much death.... for what? Why would anyone do this to America, a country so loving and giving and helpful to others. Anyone who needed help, America would help and now we had been attacked. Flags came out, hanging from homes,on businesses, on cars, on freeways, banners and signs..... God Bless America.......United We Stand....and our heros.........As we unite today and honor the 1st anniversary, it seems it has actually been harder, as last year we were in shock, this year we are full of emotion for all the lives that were lost. But again we must say thank you to all the Firefighters and Police Officers who were there to help to rescue people in the Twin Towers and finally to the heros of Flight 93 who had the courage to overpower the terrorists and bring their plane down in a field in PA. Tell us your story: i was sitting at home doing my laundry when I received a call from my mother in demarst nj, my father was on an american airlines flight out of new jersey, the flight left right after the doomed flight that hit one of the towers. he remembers being on the run way with the other jet before take off. we lost track of my fathers flight routed to chicago, i received a call from my sister crying about my fathers safty, little did she know that her pain was just beginng. she is from manalapan nj , one of the hardest hit areas in nj. my nieces friends lost parents, my sister lost frinds, soccer coaches and her feelings of security. my father was found safe, rerouted to another town. he rented a car and made it back home saftly to nj. for me , my sence of safty will never be the same because i lived through the oklahoma city bombing, my husband is a doctor here in okc and he was on standby at the hospital. the pain we lived through that day was hard to leave behind with so many lives lost but to relive it again in an area that i grew up in is like adding salt to the wound. there is a lot of evil in the world but not as much evil as there is love, i have seen it in both places. people are beautiful. we have proven that we can make this world a better place. the little things in life are to be appreciated , family is most imporant and living with grace and helping others, the best medicine, im proud of both oklahoma city and new ork for their examples to the world of courage, strength ,unity and grace. may we all in the world go forth with such grace and dignity and then this world just might stand a chance.
