I thought maybe a small plane just hit a small building.When I went home for lunch and I turned on the TV, I saw it. The plane hitting the World Trade Center. Then another hit the south tower.Maybe twenty minutes later the north tower collapsed and that's about when I went back to school. Then in Mrs. Cano's math classall we did was talk about this. Then someone told me that the south tower had collapsed. I was in shock knowing that maybe thousands had died. After school I was at home watching it all. They thought the death toll was between 4 to 5 thousand. I didn't believe it. Then, a few days later they found out who was behind this terrorist attack. It was Osama Bin Laden. After I found this out I couldn't sleep. It was the worst thing I've seen in all my life. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had breakfast with a client at Perkins and they had the TV on. A patron came over and asked us if we had seen what was happening in NYC. We said no, and when he told us the WTC had been hit, I thought it was a small plane who had trouble. I left Perkins and by the time I got to my office everyone ( my staff) was in my office and had the TV set on. IT wasn't 5 mn and the second plane hit. That is when I said this a a terroist attack. We spent the remainder of the day watching the TV and talking with each other about what has gone wrong with our country. We also called our collegues that work in midtown Manhatten to make sure they were okay. I will never forget this day just as I can clearly remember the day JFK was killed and I was only in 2nd grade at the time. Thanks for providing a place to write down our thoughts on this day. My prayers are with everyone who lost a friend, budsiness associate, or relative in this tragedy. A huge thank you to those in NYC who helped strangers in a time of need. It has been a wonderfull lesson to share with my children on what hate can do and how people will come together in times of turmoil to help one another out. It was my husband, he was at work, he told me what happened and told me to get up and turn the T.V. to the news on CNN. I paniced and got up, I turned on the T.V. to CNN, like he said, and there it was. All I could do was think, "Is this the end of the world?" I was very scared and horrified by what I saw. With permission by the news, that if we felt the need to pick up our children from school, that we were allowed to and that the schools would permit them to do so, I went, with no delay, and picked up my son from school. My son was 9 years old at the time. He had many questions on that day, 9/11, and even now he has questions. I have and I will try to answer all his questions as best as I know how. I cried on September 11, 2001 that very morning, I got up a little after 9AM, and I will not ever forget. My father-in-law recorded everything that happened on the VCR. God Bless America!!!! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had set the alarm for 8 a.m. the morning of September 11th, 2001. I remember waking up to the guy on the radio saying ??Good morning New York, it is a beautiful morning here in the city???? and he was right about the weather, it was terrific. The first things I see when I open my eyes in the mornings are the Twin Towers, which really dominate my view in my boyfriend??s and my apartment. For some reason I felt happy that morning, I remember that clearly. When I got out of bed I did my daily morning routines as always: boil water for my tea, shower while the water is boiling, get dressed and eat breakfast and reading the news online. That morning I wrote an e-mail to my boyfriend, Philippe, who was visiting his parents in Belgium. I remember writing that I was really happy because my favorite band, U2, were going to extend their world tour and come back to the United States and I had just found out which day the tickets were going on sale. As I was typing I heard a strange noise, it??s rather difficult to describe, but since this is one of the noisiest cities in the world, I didn??t really pay much attention to it. Shortly afterwards there was a different kind of loud noise and the entire building shook. I looked up and the clock on the microwave showed 8.48 a.m. Although I don??t think I have ever heard an explosion before in my life that is the first thing that came to my mind because that it what it sounded like. But then I remembered that there is a construction site right next to our building, so I thought that the noise must have came from there. Perhaps they had dropped something or something broke, which would explain why my building shook. Then came the sirens. As, I said, this is New York City where there is noise and sirens twenty-four seven, but this time it was different. The sirens were so intense and many that I had to go up to the window and look. I am on the sixth floor, right in front of the INS building, in the corner of Broadway and Worth Street. I look down at the people on the street to see their reactions. Some were running north on Broadway, but most of them were looking south. So I looked south as well, thinking that perhaps there was some kind of accident further south on Broadway. That is when I saw the enormous hole in the North Tower. Flames were coming out from all sides of it, which made me again think ?C explosion -. It was the first time, but unfortunately, not the last time I have ever seen something that looked so unreal. It looked like something straight out of a movie. For some reason, seeing the towers in flames looked familiar, as if I had seen it before. I turn on CNN right away and they are of course equally as confused as I am, however, they suspected a plane might have crashed into the tower. Hearing that a plane caused this made very surprised because when the weather is bad, especially foggy, I know that the towers are hard to see. But since the sun was shining and the skies could not have been any bluer I remember wondering: How could the pilots NOT have seen them? This of course led me to believe that it must have been a terrible accident, that there was something wrong with the plane so that somehow the pilots lost control over it. And this is what I believed until I head that exact same noise again. I had gone back to the kitchen to get some more tea when I head it again. I just froze, I couldn??t move. I realized exactly what had happened and, again, it felt so incredibly unreal. This is when I really got scared. The first plane could have been an accident and even if that was scary too, knowing that this was not an accident but instead an intentional act was terribly frightening. In between the two crashes I had tried calling my family back home in Sweden because I had an incredibly need to talk to someone. But I could not get a hold of anyone, instead all I got was my sister??s answering machine, so I left her a couple of messages. The first message I left was when I was pretty calm; I was more confused than afraid. The last message however, was pretty much the opposite of calm. She is in law school and was in class when the attacks happened. She told me later that it had been awful for her, listening to these messages and hearing me just get more and more scared for every message I left her. This may sound a little strange, and I know that it is, but since I had class at ten o??clock that morning I actually went to school. Why? Well, I am not too sure myself. I think there were several different factors that made me leave the apartment and go to school that morning. I was going crazy being in the apartment by myself just looking at the whole thing from my window and I needed to talk to someone, but failed to get a hold of anyone on the phone. At school I could at least talk to someone. Also, since I live so close to school, I figured that it wouldn??t hurt if I went to see if there was going be a class or not. Also, in all honesty, I could not imagine that it was going to get any worse than that. I really couldn??t. The towers were on fire and that was awful, but I did not think they were going to collapse since they had not done it already. So, I went to my school, Borough of Manhattan community College, which, of course was closed. I can??t say that that surprised me, but I had at least tried. I ran into my English professor at the time, professor Eggers, on Greenwich Street and we talked a little outside the school, wondering what was going. I remember that he said that he was going to have to walk home, all the way to the Upper West, side since the subways were closed and I said that I was going to go home as well, and so I did. I was on Harrison Street, between Greenwich and Hudson street when there was a horrifying noise again, but different from the others that morning. This was more of a rumbling kind, almost like thunder but a lot worse and a lot louder. I remember that I had difficulty locating where the noise came from. I thought that a plane perhaps had hit something again, but I didn??t think it came from downtown. The second I head the rumbling I turned around and there was this man behind me. It all happened so incredibly fast but all of a sudden, a woman and I were holding on to this man, who I have never seem before in my life, and each other. We leaned up against the wall of a building. I was covering my head. I remember the wall of that building shaking as well. People were screaming and just running around, complete chaos. I remember saying terrified: Where the f*** did that come from? But no one knew. So, the man, who I had been holding on to, peeked around the corner of the building, looking south on Hudson. The last thing I recall before I ran home as fast as I could was him yelling: ??Shit, I think the whole g-d damn building just collapsed??. All I could think of while running home was that I had to change shoes. I had to get my sneakers, because the shoes I was wearing were impossible to run fast in. Also, the feeling that this is just too unreal came over me once again. The fear was so real, yet the situation was not. I remember thinking?? what am I doing here? This was not supposed to happen??? When I came home and tried dialing everyone I knew, I finally got a hold of my sister. It was such a relief to talk to her and I was really happy, but I couldn??t stop crying. By then, she had head on the news what had happened here and also listened to my messages and she was, of course, worried sick. We didn??t really talk that much, because I knew I needed to leave soon. I had talked to policemen in my building and they told me that I needed to leave, and I didn??t want to stay either. I have a friend that lives up in Murray Hill and I figured that was where I was going. I managed to get a hold of her and we decided to meet in the corner of 27th street and 7th Avenue. If, for some reason, this was not possible, we decided to simply move our meeting point one avenue to the west, so the next would be 27th and 8th Ave. I have thought about this afterwards and I must say that although things were pretty chaotic here, I think our backup plan was rather good, or even the fact that we thought about having one was good. After trying to call Philippe in Belgium several times I finally got a hold of him too. I missed him so incredibly much. Although I was glad he wasn??t here to experience this nightmare, I was also sad in a selfish way since he wasn??t here with me. While talking to him, the second tower had not yet collapsed. I remember looking out the window, it was such an incredibly strange sight seeing just one of the towers. Naked in a way and I clearly remember thinking that it was sad since the tower??s twin was gone (just as if the buildings themselves had feelings), incredibly strange. Right after we had said goodbye to each other on the phone, I watched the second tower collapse as well. With only my wallet, my cell phone and its charger, I ran as fast as I could all the way to Houston Street. I am not in any good physical shape, but this run was the fastest and easiest I??ve ever done, I never became tired. I didn??t dare turn around until I was well above Houston. There were people everywhere, listening to radios, crying, hugging and many were running just like me. As I was passing St. Vincent??s hospital, people were lining up to donate blood and doctors and nurses were waiting outside for ambulances to arrive with injured people. I know now that there were not many people who came. I remember thinking that I was so grateful that didn??t have any children, pets or other family members to worry about. I stayed with my friend for a week, not because I wanted to but because I wasn??t let back in to the apartment. She lives just a few blocks from the Empire State Building, which had a bomb scare the second night I was staying there. I guess that this was a scary experience as well, but I was rather numb by then and was a lot calmer than my friend was. This is as close as she came to experience some of the fear I had felt during and after 9/11. I know that the attacks affected the entire world in one way or the other, but I don??t think anyone can begin to understand what it was like witnessing it first hand. The days at my friend??s house were the longest and most difficult days so far in my life, I felt so lonely and sad. I missed my family and my boyfriend Philippe so incredibly much. I just wished the airports would open up so that Philippe could fly home and that we could get back to our apartment. I felt very isolated being on Manhattan, I really hated being here. I wished I could take our car out of the garage and just drive to somewhere in the middle of nowhere where I would feel safe. But I couldn??t do that since the garage was below Canal Street, which no one was allowed below, and many of the tunnels and bridges out of the city were closed. One week later, Philippe finally landed at JFK and we were let back in the same day, which was a great. But there were very mixed feelings when we finally came home. The neighborhood that we call ??home?? was so different from what we are used to. For many weeks we had to show identification who we were and where we lived to get passed Canal Street. There were military and police officers in every corner carrying weapons I have only seen in movies. No regular cars were seen on the streets for weeks, only military tanks and hummers. You hardly ever saw any people around on the streets either, which also was very strange. Although they had cleaned the streets very well they were still dirty and dusty and the smell in the air was sometimes unbearable. The strangest thing of all may have been the view from our apartment. Where the towers once were, was now just an empty space. Had you not known that they were there, you would have never been able to tell that something was missing. Our neighborhood had become a war zone; it was a very creepy feeling. I spent my days trying to get some sleep since nightmares of buildings on fire, planes crashing and people dying in front of my eyes without being able to help them, kept me awake at night. I was glad in a way that my school was closed for three weeks after it had happened because I doubt I would have been able to concentrate because I had an intense feeling that everything was completely pointless; nothing mattered anymore. School was definitely one of those things I considered pointless. However, once school started I actually liked it because this forced me to get out of bed, to get dressed in the mornings and get back some kind of normal routine, something that I had not had since the attacks. My building had to evacuate at least one more time that fall because the INS building and some of the court buildings, which I also live close to, had bomb threats. This was rather difficult for me, because it brought back so many memories. Even though I knew that it probably wasn??t anything to worry about, that ??what if- feeling?? - still existed in the back of my head. It took months before I stopped looking up to the sky every single time I heard a plane or became alert when I heard sirens. I could sit at my desk doing homework but as soon as I heard something, I just had to go to the window and make sure that everything was all right, even though I knew it almost certainly was. I still have bad dreams every now and then, but they are becoming less frequent, which is good. I can??t say that I am afraid for my own personal safety, but I spend a lot of time thinking about what will happen in the future. Hopefully, the world won??t experience a day like September 11th, 2001 ever again. As I got to work the regular tired greetings were not as they were as usual. When I started to work, the second plane had barely hit. The radio was on at a music station whom the deejays always talk to much and make unfunny jokes. Me, I was not listening as I was tired and never liked the station as I wanted music to lift me up. At around 10:00 Am, my manager called his boss who said that we must close. It all seemed like a joke to me. As I was walking home I saw a sign at Jamba Juice written with a black marker that said "Due to worldy disasters, Jamba Juice will be closed the rest of today". "Worldy disasters?" I said to myself. I continued walking and I got home where the television was on. The television was constantly running the images of the two planes crashing into the towers. As I saw those images I could not believe it. I said "God...wake me up". At that moment I told msyelf "I just saw this in the movie 'Pearl Harbor' and now it is happening yet again in real life. Maybe it is a Jerry Bruckheimer movie." That night I slept and asked God to let me wake-up and realize that it was all a dream...but it was not. It was reality. Then it was announced with three words: "This is war!" Oh no! Another war? We don't need that. The next day I wnet back to work to finish what I has started on Tuesday. As I went to work, we opened the store and one of my duties was to make costumers happy by supporting a smile. How do you smile after such a horror? So okay, I supported a smile but it was a smile that said "I am only smiling because I am told to do so". The big crowd came in and with a sad tone I would greet them and they knew that it was my duty to put on a fake toothpaste smile. How dare a person use a plane as a 700 pounds missile? How did they dare think that by doing so they would wake-up in Heaven. They did NOT wake-up in Heaven, this I know for sure. No, they woke up in the lake of fire "here the fire never quenches and the worms never die" as says the Holy Bible. Then the suspect whose name never heard by me and millions of others suddenly became the #1 Most Wanted man. I walked by my local box store and the manager had a sign that said something like "Osama bin Laden for barbeque". I knew that that would be the start of a sterotypical racism against one religion and the ongoing protest against war. I am against war, but I know that we have no choice or else not only we will get attacked more, but we will not be the United States of America, we will simply be "The States of America". I know that war is the only option as it says in the Bible in the chapter of Mark 13 and the entire book of Revelation. The Holy Bible is the only true book of God and the only one. All other books are man-made. Jesus Christ was crucified so that our sins would die and was resurected so that we would have an enternal life. Accpet Him today and you "shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). All you have to do is to confess your sins by saying the following prayer: "Jesus, I know that I have sinned against you. I know the truth is that I have sinned by my own choice, and I am the one responsible for it. I know that I have earned punishment from You, and that the fair punishment would be death. Jesus, I believe that You died in my place. Forgive me for my sin. I cannot cover or take my sin away, I am relying totally and only on You. You are the only one who can save me. I reject my sin, I turn away from it, I repent. Come into my life, take away my sin, and show me how to live my life in a way that is right and pleasing to You." My sister was watching the news and she told me what happened. When I got to school everyone was talking about it. I t was a really big event. My teacher then told us about everything and was explaining to us about who everyone thought it was and why the terrorist attack happened. I felt bad or everyone in the Twin Towers and for all of the people who have passed away from the smoke, being in the building, and for being a firefighter trying to save all those people. Tell us your story: I was walking students to a class, as I was leaving them with the vice principle I had a teacher pull me aside and tell me a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. I did not quite understand what was going on until I walk into the media center. A small group of teachers were standing around a television set with a look of horror on their faces. As I watched the pictures a sense of absolute dread came over me. I just couldn't believe this was happening. The next thing we were watching was about two more planes that had been hijacked and that one had crashed into the Pentagon. I live very close to Ft. Meade, a military base, and knew that alot of friends and neighbors may not be home that evening. I went and called my husband, Tim, to tell him what was happening. We were both happy to know that the other one was alright. After a quick discussion we decided that we should let the children stay in school. As we each came home one by one that afternoon we embraced each other and said I love you. As we continued to watch the news coverage that evening all we could do is wonder why. Through many tears we said prayers for all those whose lives were touched by this horrific act. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Where shall I begin. The morning of September 11,2001 Was one that I don't think myself, or anyone else will ever forget. I was working in my office in Tarrytown New York when I heard something on the radio stating there was an accident with one of the Twin Towers. A small plane had hit one of them. It really didn't sink in. I proceeded to go to the cafeteria for a cup of coffee. Walking into the cafeteria, there were people swarmed all over the television. I could barely believe my eyes. Seeing a plane coming from the right side of the T.V. screen and smashing into the other tower. My brain didn't really register what was happening. People were screaming and crying. There were people jumping out of the Towers. I ran into my office to tell everyone what was going on. My sister who works with me and my other co-workers went back to watch the horrific seen unfolding before our eyes. After about 2 hours everyone decided to take the rest of the day off and make sure all of our loved ones were safe. I felt so helpless. I wanted to do something, anything but didn't even know how. I live in yonkers New York which is only 15 minutes from the city. My sister and I went to her house. I could normally see the city skyline from one of the roads close by. Smoke was all that I or anyone else could see that day and many days after. There are no words to describe the pain felt for the victims and their families. Someone very close to me lost her fiancee. My heart goes out to her and his family and all the thousands of other victims and families. New York and the rest of the country has come together like never before. The tears will never stop when I think of September 11,2001. The pain and anger will never subside but the love and memories of all the victims will bring peace in our hearts and strength to a country that will shine of freedom and liberty. I ran to the TV screen and I was in total disbelief. I just kept thinking that could not be an accident....then the second plane hit, which, of course, confirmed it was terrorism. I had read about Bin Laden weeks earlier and immediately thought he was behind it. I worked in a building that had over 30 floors and remember thinking we would not be safe. Fortunately, they shut down the building for 2 days since everyone was too shocked to go to work. I did not lose friends or family members in 911, but the memory of those who died (and especially of those images on the television) will stay with me for the rest of my life. It is easy to get teary just thinking about it. Now it's easier to understand when elders speak about the horrors of Pearl Harbor, World War II, and the VietNam War. Now I can say that my generation knows what horror is all about -- we witnessed it on 911. May God have mercy on all of us for making such a mess of this planet and may God bring to justice those that have inflicted so much pain and suffering on the innocent. I was in Science class and all that I remember was that my teacher, Mrs.Thomas came running into the classroom crying. She then turned on the television. I saw two planes hit the the two towers. Tears began to run down my face as I thought about all of those human lives in the building. I saw people jumping to their deaths from top floors and others running back in the building to help. Yet, what stood out to me the most was that when the ash was settling on people, everyone looked the same. I was first surprised that someone could penetrate our defenses and shocked when I witnessed the towers crumble to the ground. I didn't know what to think. Was the world coming to an end? On my way to school, my dad turned on the radio and everyone was reporting on the World Trade Centers. There were reports of a third hijacked plane trying to kill the president but when they found out he wasn't at the White House, they crashed into the Pentagon. At school, most everyone was talking in amazement about the terrorist attacks. In most of my classes, we watched live coverage of the progress of firefighters, police men, and volunteers doing whatever they could to make the situation better for the injured and those in need. As the daughter and sister of policemen and the sister of a volunteer fireman, I recognized the danger when they first entered the first tower. When the towers fell, I knew that lives would be lost. All that died that day were heroes. All that survived that day are heroes. My heart stopped that day and my first thought was to call all of my family and make sure that everyone was okay even though we were all far removed from the sites of terrorism. I was driving to an interview for a new job when the first plane hit and I heard it on the radio. When the second plane hit I realized that the world had just changed. I did lose some friends from college but was unaffected in my close personal life. What has changed has been my spiritual life. I have faced three series of treatments for leukemia since 1998 but nothing had made me face my own mortality as much as the terrorist attacks on America. I had just started a new job, and the stress was already getting to me. As I went on my break at nine, a friend of mine came in and said that one of the Twin Towers just got hit by a jet, his wife had just called telling him. We all thought it was just a joke, or a small one person plane. As we left break, I walked out on the the sales floor and saw the two store managers looking at the tv, with their hands over their mouths. My stomach instantly hit the floor. As I approached the television, I saw the sihlouette of the second plane and commented on how low it was. It went behind the tower, and never came back out....just a ball of flames. I called my husband, who was still sleeping, crying and yelling at him to turn on the TV. We watched in horror as the Pentagon was reported hit. My brother is a Naval Officer, and had been known to be there weekly. Thank God, he called that night to tell us he was in Norfolk and not to worry about him. I got off of work and went home and held my son, who was seven months old. All I wanted in the world was to be with my family and cry. How did the day change me? I look at things differently now. I quit the job I found so "mundain", and went back to school. I tell my husband that I love him every time he leaves, whether we are in the middle of a heated argument or a wonderful day. I look at my beautiful son, who is now 18 months old, and I think about all of the hope his future holds. Our second son, Logan, is due this December 8th. Family has always been important to my husband and myself, but now it is so much more important. I noticed, on my computer, that there was something about an airplane that had hit the WTC. I guess I wasn't awake yet, because it didn't register as significant. I got to work and my boss asked if I knew what had happened. I told him that I'd heard something about it. He told me to turn on the TV in the store, because it was much bigger than I thought. By this time both towers had already collapsed. Initially, I couldn't comprehend was I was seeing. Then, as the images on TV were repeated, I began to understand the devastation of that day. I immediatly called my fiance and told her to turn on the TV, that the WTC was gone. Like me, she didn't understand what was happening. I continued to watch the TV, with no argument from my boss. For half that day, I tried to do my job, but I couldn't concentrate on anything but the events of that day. I found myself at the point of tears for most of the day. I somehow made it through the day, but found that I was uneasy driving near downtown with all the tall buildings around me. I also had near panic attacks driving through tunnels. I was also very uncomfortable with the eerie emptiness of the sky. We live in the landing path for SeaTac airport and are used to planes flying over. My fears have dissipated with time, but I still have difficulty bringing up the memories of that awful day. When I arrived ar work, one of my fellow associates who was sitting on a bench outside the store said "Have you heard?" I said "No, what are you talking about?" I turned to CNN and watched footage of a plane going head on into the tower, at this point the reporters only assumed this might have been an accident. Then the second plane hit. I't was hard to watch, I tried to explain to my friend the plane was not moving, it was crashing right into the building.The footage rolled over, and over, the same horrible sight. I was shocked and could not fathom what was soon to come. Reporters then started to guestion the possibility of a terriost attack. The horrifying guestion of what the country was watching, still not answered. Then, the Pentagon was attacked. I felt as if I was in a car accident and time was going slow. Reporters announced their was a plane in the air they could not account for. Our President was going to a secure secert location. I looked all around me. Pictures of my son and husband,the security of my home, the blue sky outside my window, the freedom I took for granted. WAR, my god, we are at WAR.
