I believe it to be a sad coincidence(if it is a coincidence) that we dial 911 for emergencies and the biggest emergency in U.S history was on 9/11.Millions of people around the U.S felt so many emotions when those planes hit. 4 planes hit in all, one in Shanksville,Pennsylvania where if those brave passengers had not sacrificed their lives many more would have died, one in the Pentagon, and two in the World Trade Centers where the biggest death toll took place. When those planes hit thousands died but millions were affected. 3,025 people died in all. I think that September 11th is a time to look back and reflect on what happened. On my way to school my dad ask me if i heard about the bomings. Well i didn't even know till it was that big of a deal until i got to school. In every class I went to all of my teachers Wear watching the news. It was so weird for me, I had know clue about what had happened. I was just really confussed until I got home and me and my family talked about it and they told me that this was going to change the USA. Tell us your story: This was written to commemorate the events of an unforgettable day in the life of two Americans, which may have changed their life forever. My life will never be the same. Today is September 16, 2001 and I woke up with two goals to accomplish. Both goals revolved around soccer. Goal one is to get my son to his soccer practice in the morning and the other is to go to my daughter?s game in the afternoon. As much as I enjoy watching my children play soccer, there is no joy in my life. I am mourning the death of thousands of people in New York City. Exactly five days ago, my life changed. On September 11, 2001, I personally witnessed an attack on America. It was a glorious Tuesday, the sky was a beautiful blue and all my worries seemed trivial. Our family had just gotten back from Miami the week before. It was a great vacation and we were moving on with our busy daily life. This meant getting the children to school and settling into our work routine. My husband and I drive to work everyday. We both work for a New York City law enforcement agency and our office is located in the lower part of Manhattan exactly one block away from the New York Stock Exchange. Nevertheless, we were running late that Tuesday morning. Our daughter had taken her time getting dressed and our hopes of getting to work early were dashed. We were able to leave our home in Rockland County before seven-thirty. To our amazement, the traffic on the George Washington Bridge was very light that day and it was smooth sailing. We managed to drop the children at school by eight o?clock that morning. What a wonderful morning it was and the possibility of arriving at work before nine in the morning was real. No such luck on the FDR, traffic was heavy and we had just passed the United Nations when we heard that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center building. Like so many New Yorkers, we were listening to Z-100 and our first thought was that this was one of Elvis? sick jokes. My husband and I quickly realized that this was no joke. As the news story was unfolding, we got closer to lower Manhattan and the second plane hit Tower two. At that moment, many police cars, fire trucks and ambulances were seen speeding towards Broad Street. The skyline was filled with smoke and both buildings were on fire. From the car, I could see debris and I looked at other cars wondering if they too were witnessing and hearing this horrific chain of event. I did not recognize the expression on people?s faces but I saw many drivers gawking at the sight of the Twin Towers on fire. Traffic was diverted towards the Brooklyn Bridge area of Manhattan. Like so many other New Yorkers on that day, we witnessed the sight of FBI agents and NYC Police Officer on the streets of New York trying to control traffic thereby allowing the easy passage of emergency vehicles. We saw many people getting out of cabs and just walking towards the City Hall area. There were many that did not know what was going on. They would glance over their shoulders and ask car drivers ?What happened?? Those that responded to their questions had listened to the radio knew that terrorists had attacked New York. Traffic moved and we were able to park in Chinatown. The miracle of finding parking in the Lower East Side was greatly unappreciated on that day.. Our hearts were heavy and we prayed for the survival of those trapped in the WTC as we walked past Chinatown and the many court buildings. The top floors of one building and the middle floors of the other building were on fire. Orange yellow balls of fire were visible, and much debris was falling. As we got closer, we realized that maybe it was not debris. The looks of horror and prayers of many for those that were trapped did nothing to prevent what had not yet taken place on that beautiful Tuesday morning. Our stride towards Broadway was steadfast and determined. Walking towards the World Trade Center and trying to find our way to work was our immediate goal. We had just passed 26 Federal Plaza when we heard the rumbling of the earth. My first thought was ?This is an earthquake and my second thought was ? We are getting bombed.? Nonetheless, debris was flying and Federal Police Officers were telling us to run north. We ran and looked back. We saw smoke and continued running. There was nothing but smoke. It was minutes later when we realized that the second tower had fallen. We made our way to Chinatown knowing that many had died. All of a sudden there was a second rumble. This time there was no smoke and the second building fell. One floor after another fell. It seemed like an eternity. All of Manhattan was evacuated. We had the rest of the day off; yet, this was not what we wanted. Silent screams of horror, fear and immense sadness wretched my soul as tears ran down my cheeks. There was to be no tomorrow for many. All they did that morning of September 11, 2001 was go to work? Treasure every day of your life. Today can be your last day on earth? God bless America! That's the thought of the day, the *obvious* thought of the day, as we collectively ponder: are these the same, stunned, surreal sensations that our parents and grandparents felt fifty years ago? Dazed thoughts thinking "this can't be real" while an angry anger bubbles underneath, sometimes whispering, other times screaming for eye-for-eye justice. So, lo these last years spent celebrating "America's greatest generation," we *get* what the vets were speaking about. The patriotic outrage after a national violation. Not only can you not *not* react, you cannot *not* want to help. What was once radio, newspaper, and a little bit o' television, is now CNN, the Internet, and near-instant pre- packaging of just-happened horrors such that, by four o'clock this afternoon, most of the major news sites had slick, professional- looking graphics already advertising "America Under Attack." (In their defense, I suppose presentation *is* everything. Even in the worst of times.) Of course, provided you could *connect* to such sites. Internet bandwidth was catch as catch can today. Once con- nected, though, content was indeed king: photos and articles and testimonials and those amazing (if wee) videos that diminished, but didn't sterile, the day's incredible footage. Don't know about y'all, but this writer hasn't had a lighthearted thought since the first exclaimed phone call from my mother this morning. Food, drink, and dessert urges are down. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was working for Thales ATM, Inc. as an electronic technician. A few coworkers had stopped by to tell me the news. At first I thought it was a joke. I proceeded to help install a television in the employee lounge area. Several faces started flowing through my mind. I once worked in the World Trade Towers as a service repair technician. Many of the people I dealt with came to mind as I recalled those days 10 years earlier. I was overwhelmed by feelings of loss. When the pictures on the television showed the first aircraft, live pictures of the second were soon etched in my mind. The horror and devastation became very real. If I had not made the decisions I had in the past it could have been me. I empathsized with the people jumping from the towers. The horror of burning would be too much for me to bear as well. Shock soon turned to anger when news of the responsible parties were made known. The senseless slaughter of innocents was beyond my comprehension. The anger soon turned to depression where I ended up in the hospital a few weeks later. I did not realize the impact such an incident would have on me. Perhaps it was because of the closeness I felt to those who died. Much like the Kennedy assasination this day shall be forever in my thoughts when September 11th comes around. None of my friends ever showed hatred or anger towards Muslims, but that all changed after the attacks. I now know people talking about bombing Afghanistan, and killing Muslims. So if someone asked me if my generation has been changed due to the nine eleven attacks I would unreluctantly say yes. I think America has changed in one immense way. Americans of all races are now showing patriotism more than before. With chins up and flags held high I think it is safe to say America has drastically changed. As for myself I have not changed much. I go on living each day like the other, still proud to be an American. Sometimes I feel loathing or anger towards Muslims, but then I just remind myself that not all Muslims are bad. I used to think that all Muslims were bad, but weeks after the attacks I realized that this was terrorists doing this not Muslims. So in a way I guess I have changed. Many were affected by the nine eleven attacks, some more than others. The attacks impacted everyone at least a little. Family friends, the whole generation was affected. We have to look past all the bombings and terrorism attacks, and when we do that I know we are all proud to be Americans. Only to figure out later that it would be a day that would change my perception of my whole life. I walked out of class with my best friend and then noticed a bunch of students and faculty gathered around a television. I saw a news reporter and thought that it must be something slightly important but I was running late for class. I told my friend that I would meet her after my math class to go home. While walking to my math class I realized that not to many people were walking around campus. I walked into class to see my teacher crying. I had no idea what had happened until she said that something very tragic has happened to our country and class is canceled for the day so we can go home to our families. I walked back to Bodie hall (where the television was set up at) only to find more people there. I had to search for my best friend because I was terrified of what more was to come. Finally we met up and she filled me in on what had happened. From there we went straight to the car and put on the AM stations. When I heard what had happened it made me think a lot about how I take every second of every minute of the day for granted. That I need to take more time to appreciate what I have right in front of me. There were a lot of "Would if's" flying around in my head, as I am sure with many other people in this country. I think that I am very blessed to be an American and receive all the freedom that I am given. All that I could remember was all those children without mothers and fathers. How grateful I am to have my mom and dad involved in my life. All these people losing their loved ones and I couldn't even imagine losing my best friends. The news was on and Diane Sawyer and Charles Gibson were on. All of I heard that the U.S. were attacked. I said oh my God! I had just shut off the radio because there were only talk shows on and put a tape in the player. After I had gotten to work I heard about the first Twin Tower. My first reaction was are you for real....after the second Twin Tower was hit we all knew there was something serious going on. My first thought was to my son then in Newport News, VA aboard the USS Nimitz. Would he have to go to war....he was only 20 at the time. My second thought was to my children....are they okay? What have they heard so far and are they frantically worried about their brother? My son called me from the ship to let know he was okay but was not sure what really was going on. I only had to work for a few hours that day and left for home at 11. When I got home my 15 had called and left several messages worried about her brother....my 18 year son also called from college for me to go get him early. My younger children really did not understand much of the situation except that something bad had happened and that their brother in the Navy was not far away from where it had happened. Colleagues at NCC came into 416 Enterprise (we academic advisors call our office space the "bull pen" because 7 of us have office cubicles crammed into this room), announcing that the first World Trade tower had been struck by a plane. Tell us your story: I was at work that day and had just gone outside on my 9:00 am break when a friend came outside and told us that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center Towers. None of us knew what to think and honestly our first thoughts were not terrorism. When we went back inside our office building the looks on peoples face as they listened to their radios through headphones gave us all a very bad feeling. I sat down at my seat and put my own headphones on. Tuning to a national news station I immediately heard the newscaster exclaim, "My God! A second plane has just hit the other Trade Center towers!" Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My alarm is set to KNPR radio station. I was awaken at approximately 6:30 a.m. to the news broadcast that the Trade Center had been hit by an airplane. I jumped out of bed and turned on the television and much to my horror I caught the broadcast showing the first plane hitting then the second one hitting. I woke my son up and had him sit with me. We sat and held hands and cried. I told him that we had to attempt some type of normalicy even in the tragedy. As we were driving to school, we saw several children playing on the playground of a school. It looked so incredibly surreal. It reminded me just how safe we feel in America. And now in these troubling times, I wonder just how safe we really are. As a result of 9/11, I now have an idea of what it must be like to live where buildings and homes are being bombed. It is earth shattering. To this day whenever I see fotage of the Trade Towers being hit, I cry. My family and I will never forget 9/11 or all those that perished leaving orphaned families. We are forever grateful for all of the brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice and perished trying to save others. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am 14 years old and I was in school when this tragic day occured. We were in art class and the principal came over the P.A. and told us that two planes had crashed into two twin towers. Some of the boys in my class laughed because they did not know that it was an act of terrorism. We left the art room and went into our homeroom, the television was on and my homeroom teacher was in tears. We watched the TV, over and over again we saw the planes crash into the towers. No one said anything. We heard that a plane had crashed into the pentagon and heard that another had been hijacked. We all sat in wonder thinking what could be next? We left school at 12:00 and it was caos. There were people who have family in New York and were scared out of there minds! I for one have family in Queens. My great aunt was in the St. Vincents Hospital for twelve hours that day. I went home and no one was there. I tried to call my mom's cell phone but it would not go through. I opened up my lunch box and started eating my lunch while watching the news. Then all of a sudden a door slamed in the back of my house. I was home alone and scared out of my mind. I grabed my dog by the collar and ran down to the bottom of the driveway and sat there and cried for an hour. I was scared and confused. I was just a kid during these tradjedies and I felt like I couldn't do anything to help. No one was there for me while I was crying to comfort me. Well my mom got back from picking up my brother and sister and driving some friends home and I told her all about what happened. I went inside and went back to the bathroom door, the one that had slammed, and I opended and saw that a window had been opened and the wind had blown it open. Well since that day I have been stronger in my faith. I knew God could make something good come out of something so terrible. Everytime we drive down a road we see a whole bunch of flags. America has pulled together and become stronger since that tragic day. My sympathy is out for all the families of the victoms. Well I guess this is the end of my story, thankyou!
