<text>On the day of this tragedy I was sitting at my desk at work listening to the radio. When the first plane hit, I thought it was an accident. I thought, "Oh my god, those poor people." It was a horrible plane crash. Then they announced that a second plane hit. Following that was the plane in to the pentagon and then the plane in Pennsylvania. It was very clear that we were under attack. We immediately turned on the TV at work to find out what the heck was going on.

You could see the fear in everyone's eyes as we watched in horror. There were people trapped above the fires, people running on the streets. I just sat there hoping that people were getting out of those buildings and wondering if there were to be any more. Is something going to happen in Boston? No one knew.

Something that still gives me chills is that my work had asked me if I wanted to fill in a 3 month position out in California. The week of September 11th would have been when I would have headed out if I would have said yes. What if it was my plane that was hijacked? What if it was me going in to those buildings? I still feel guilty knowing that when this happened, for one brief moment, I thanked God that it wasn't me. Is that wrong?

When names started being released, it was shocking to hear local people had died in this tragedy. Names that I actually recognized. The Oganowski farm is a few houses up from me in Dracut. I have never met any of them but knew the name. I even sent the family a card of sympathy even though we never crossed paths. I just felt and still feel so sad that they lost a father-husband-brother-friend.

The amazing thing that came out of all this was the way people came together. Flags were flown high. Tears were shed during services of people you didn't even know. I started reading quotes from the people whose lives were lost and I cried. They had called loved ones after the first plane hit letting them know they were ok and then were never heard from again after the buildings collapsed.

Still to this day, hearing the stories of families that lost someone, hearing the last words of people on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, knowing what they did. It just makes me cry. Songs on the radio in rememerance makes me cry.

And today, one year later, I wear my red, white and blue, my rememberance ribbon in pride. Knowing I am an American and even though they knocked down our buildings and destroyed countless lives, we will fight for our country, for everyone that died and all those struggling to cope with htis tragedy.

Stand tall America! Don't be afraid to remember 9/11/01!</text>

<text>The day was going as usual the kids were being kids when over the intercom came an annoucement that we need to go to the church. once we arrived our principal Sister Margaret
told us the news and we prayed for those involved. A fellow teacher sister worked at the pentagon and was in the area where the plane hit, I held my friend hand as she made frantic phone calls, and finally she was able to reach her sister, she was at home with the flu. I guess for once being sick really was good. We returned to the students and consoled them until their parents arrived and then we all just looked at each other in shock. We left school to go home to our friends and families.</text>

<text>It was almost just another morning for me. Sometimes when things happen to the rest of the country it doesn't really effect us in ALaska .I woke up, got on the internet and there it was. I thought it was a movie. Some big hollywood picture. I didn't know if it was true. The school day was a mix of buisness and emotion.SOme teachers but CNN or MSNBC on, some tried to get by with out talking. WE all had questions, I know I did. But now, I know they couldn't answer them. I remember that on the bus ride, there was a sign on one of the windows. It read " Were At War." THe bus driver told us we weren't. I f we weren't, I didn't know what war was. What had the most impact on me that day was the quiet. Never in my life have I ever heard everything around me so quiet. I remember my mother crying. And my 3 year old sisters world changing before our eyes. I won't forget, and hopefully know one ever will. I will tell my sister what happen. What I remember from that day. WE all know who the heroes are. Godbless you NYPD FDNY

<text>The day before September 11th everything was fine, I had work the next day so i set my alarm clock for about 8 am... it did go off about 8 am and then I hit the off, well some how did when off again and I thought I was dreaming, I was still 1/2 asleep, then I hear planes, fire, crashing, and New York! Then after a few mins of waking up I told myself that it was not a dream! I ran into my living room were my mom and sister were watching a movie, I grabed the remote with them yelling at me, and I turned the movie off and put the chanel on 4,5,8 and 11(Dallas TV) I so remember everyone shuting up, my mouth open wide, I couldn't believe it! My mom, sister and me all just hugged each other and I remember I started to cry, we called my dad and was so shocked! And then there was plane #2 and we saw it crashed into building #2 I we could say was Oh My God!!! I think about all those familys who died and all the children who will never know there daddy or there mommy, it just make me want to cry all over again! Then when the other 2 planes crashed I KNEW it was all together. Let my say everywhere I went in my house I always had the TV with me. I when to work about 2pm and me and the lady I work with was just talking, and we had a TV in a sitting room (I worked in a hotel) and unless someone came in the front area I stayed at that TV. I can not believe how someone can be that mean and evil could do that to anyone. All I have to say is...

                   GOD BLESS AMERICA,
                   GOD BLESS BUSH,

---------------------------------------------------------

To All-

This was sent to us from someone we know who was in the WTC north tower last Tuesday... Pretty powerful reading...

                                                                                                  Jim

I am committing this to "paper" so I never forget. SO WE NEVER FORGET. I am sure that this is one of thousands of stories that will emerge over the next several days and weeks. I arrived as usual a little before 8am. My office was on the 87th floor of 1 World Trade Center, AKA: Tower 1, AKA: the North Tower. Most of my associates were in by 8:30m. We were standing around, joking around, eating breakfast, checking emails, and getting set for the day when the first plane hit just a few stories above us. I must stress that we did not know that it was a plane. The building lurched violently and shook as if it were an earthquake. People screamed. I watched out my window as the building seemed to move 10 to 20 feet in each direction. It rumbled and shook long enough for me to get my wits about myself and grab a co-worker and seek shelter under a doorway. Light fixtures and parts of the ceiling collapsed. The kitchen was destroyed. We were certain that it was a bomb. We looked out the windows. Reams of paper were flying everywhere, like a ticker tape parade. I looked down at the street. I could see people in Battery Park City looking up. Smoke started billowing in through the holes in the ceiling. I believe that there were 13 of us.

We did not panic. I can only assume that we thought that the worst was over. The building was standing and we were shaken but alive. We checked the halls. The smoke was thick and white and did not smell like I imagined smoke should smell. Not like your BBQ or your fireplace or even a bonfire. The phones were working. My wife had taken our 9 month old for his check up. I called my nanny at home and told her to page my wife, tell her that a bomb went off, I was ok, and on my way out. I grabbed my laptop. Took off my tee shirt and ripped it into 3 pieces. Soaked it in water. Gave 2 pieces to my friends. Tied my piece around my face to act as an air filter. And we all started moving to the staircase. One of my dearest friends said that he was staying until the police or firemen came to get him. In the halls there were tiny fires and sparks. The ceiling had collapsed in the men's bathroom. It was gone along with anyone who may have been in there. We did not go in to look. We missed the staircase on the first run and had to double back. Once in the staircase we picked up fire extinguishers just incase. On the 85th floor a brave associate of mine and I headed back up to our office to drag out my partner who stayed behind. There was no air, just white smoke. We made the rounds through the office calling his name. No response. He must have succumbed to the smoke. We left defeated in our efforts and made our way back to the stairwell. We proceeded to the 78th floor where we had to change over to a different stairwell. 78 is the main junction to switch to the upper floors. I expected to see more people. There were some 50 to 60 more. Not enough. Wires and fires all over the place. Smoke too. A brave man was fighting a fire with the emergency hose. I stopped with to friends to make sure that everyone from our office was accounted for. We ushered them and confused people into the stairwell. In retrospect, I recall seeing Harry, my head trader, doing the same several yards behind me. I am only 35. I have known him for over 14 years. I headed into the stairwell with 2 friends. We were moving down very orderly in Stair Case A. very slowly. No panic. At least not overt panic. My legs could not stop shaking. My heart was pounding. Some nervous jokes and laughter. I made a crack about ruining a brand new pair of Merrells. Even still, they were right, my feet felt great.

We all laughed. We checked our cell phones. Surprisingly, there was a very good signal, but the Sprint network was jammed. I heard that the Blackberry 2 way email devices worked perfectly. On the phones, 1 out of 20 dial attempts got through. I knew I could not reach my wife so I called my parents. I told them what happened and that we were all okay and on the way down. Soon, my sister in law reached me. I told her we were fine and moving down. I believe that was about the 65th floor. We were bored and nervous. I called my friend Angel in San Francisco. I knew he would be watching. He was amazed I was on the phone. He told me to get out that there was another plane on its way. I did not know what he was talking about. By now the second plane had struck Tower 2. We were so deep into the middle of our building that we did not hear or feel anything. We had no idea what was really going on. We kept making way for wounded to go down ahead of us. Not many of them, just a few. No one seemed seriously wounded. Just some cuts and scrapes. Everyone cooperated. Everyone was a hero yesterday. No questions asked. I had co-workers in another office on the 77th floor. I tried dozens of times to get them on their cell phones or office lines. It was futile. Later I found that they were alive. One of the many miracles on a day of tragedy.

On the 53rd floor we came across a very heavyset man sitting on the stairs. I asked if he needed help or was he just resting. He needed help. I knew I would have trouble carrying him because I have a very bad back. But my friend and I offered anyway. We told him he could lean on us. He hesitated, I don't know why. I said do you want to come or do you want us to send help for you. He chose for help. I told him he was on the 53rd floor in Stairwell A and that's what I would tell the rescue workers. He said okay and we left.

On the 44th floor my phone rang again. It was my parents. They were hysterical. I said relax, I'm fine. My father said get out, there is third plane coming. I still did not understand. I was kind of angry. What did my parents think? Like I needed some other reason to get going? I couldn't move the thousand people in front of me any faster. I know they love me, but no one inside understood what the situation really was. My parents did. Starting around this floor the firemen, policemen, WTC K-9 units without the dogs, anyone with a badge, started coming up as we were heading down. I stopped a lot of them and told them about the man on 53 and my friend on 87.

I later felt terrible about this. They headed up to find those people and met death instead. On the 33rd floor I spoke with a man who somehow knew most of the details. He said 2 small planes hit the building. Now we all started talking about which terrorist group it was. Was it an internal organization or an external one?

The overwhelming but uninformed opinion was Islamic Fanatics. Regardless, we now knew that it was not a bomb and there were potentially more planes coming. We understood. On the 3rd floor the lights went out and we heard & felt this rumbling coming towards us from above. I thought the staircase was collapsing upon itself. It was 10am now and that was Tower 2 collapsing next door. We did not know that. Someone had a flashlight. We passed it forward and left the stairwell and headed down a dark and cramped corridor to an exit. We could not see at all. I recommended that everyone place a hand on the shoulder of the person in front of them and call out if they hit an obstacle so others would know to avoid it. They did. It worked perfectly. We reached another stairwell and saw a female officer emerge soaking wet and covered in soot. She said we could not go that way it was blocked. Go up to 4 and use the other exit. Just as we started up she said it was ok to go down instead. There was water everywhere. I called out for hands on shoulders again and she said that was a great idea. She stayed behind instructing people to do that. I do not know what happened to her.

We emerged into an enormous room. It was light but filled with smoke. I commented to a friend that it must be under construction. Then we realized where we were. It was the second floor. The one that overlooks the lobby. We were ushered out into the courtyard, the one where the fountain used to be. My first thought was of a TV movie I saw once about nuclear winter and fallout. I could not understand where all of the debris came from. There was at least five inches of this gray pasty dusty drywall soot on the ground as well as a thickness of it in the air. Twisted steel and wires. I heard there were bodies and body parts as well, but I did not look. It was bad enough. We hid under the remaining overhangs and moved out to the street. We were told to keep walking towards Houston Street. The odd thing is that there were very few rescue workers around. Less than five. They all must have been trapped under the debris when Tower 2 fell. We did not know that and could not understand where all of that debris came from. It was just my friend Kern and I now. We were hugging but sad. We felt certain that most of our friends ahead of us died and we knew no one behind us.

We came upon a post office several blocks away. We stopped and looked up. Our building, exactly where our office is (was), was engulfed in flame and smoke. A postal worker said that Tower 2 had fallen down. I looked again and sure enough it was gone. My heart was racing. We kept trying to call our families. I could not get in touch with my wife. Finally I got through to my parents. Relieved is not the word to explain their feelings. They got through to my wife, thank God, and let her know I was alive. We sat down. A girl on a bike offered us some water. Just as she took the cap off her bottle we heard a rumble. We looked up and our building, Tower 1 collapsed. I did not note the time but I am told it was 10:30am. We had been out less than 15 minutes.

We were mourning our lost friends, particularly the one who stayed in the office as we were now sure that he had perished. We started walking towards Union Square. I was going to Beth Israel Medical Center to be looked at. We stopped to hear the President speaking on the radio. My phone rang. It was my wife. I think I fell to my knees crying when I heard her voice. Then she told me the most incredible thing. My partner who had stayed behind called her. He was alive and well. I guess we just lost him in the commotion. We started jumping and hugging and shouting. I told my wife that my brother had arranged for a hotel in midtown. He can be very resourceful in that way. I told her I would call her from there. My brother and I managed to get a gypsy cab to take us home to Westchester instead. I cried on my son and held my wife until I fell asleep.

As it turns out my partner, the one who I thought had stayed behind was behind us with Harry Ramos, our head trader. This is now second hand information. They came upon Victor, the heavyset man on the 53rd floor. They helped him. He could barely move. My partner bravely/stupidly tested the elevator on the 52nd floor. He rode it down to the sky lobby on 44. The doors opened, it was fine. He rode it back up and got Harry and Victor. I don't yet know if anyone else joined them. Once on 44 they made their way back into the stairwell. Someplace around the 39th to 36th floors they felt the same rumble I felt on the 3rd floor. It was 10am and Tower 2 was coming down. They had about 30 minutes to get out. Victor said he could no longer move. They offered to have him lead on them. He said he couldn't do it. My partner hollered at him to sit on his butt and scoot down the steps. He said he was not capable of doing it. Harry told my partner to go ahead of them. Harry had once had a heart attack and was worried about this mans heart. It was his nature to be this way. He was/is one of the kindest people I know. He would not leave a man behind. My partner went ahead and made it out. He said he was out maybe 10 minutes before the building came down. This means that Harry had maybe 25 minutes to move Victor 36 floors. I guess they moved 1 floor every 1.5 minutes. Just a guess. This means Harry was around the 20th floor when the building collapsed. As of now 12 of 13 people are accounted for. As of 6pm yesterday his wife had not heard from him. I fear that Harry is lost. However, a short while ago I heard that he may be alive. Apparently there is a web site with survivor names on it and his name appears there. Unfortunately, Ramos is not an uncommon name in New York. Pray for him and all those like him.

With regards to the firemen heading upstairs, I realize that they were going up anyway. But, it hurts to know that I may have made them move quicker to find my friend. Rationally, I know this is not true and that I am not the responsible one. The responsible ones are in hiding somewhere on this planet and damn them for making me feel like this. But they should know that they failed in terrorizing us. We were calm. Those men and women that went up were heroes in the face of it all. They must have known what was going on and they did their jobs. Ordinary people were heroes too. Today the images that people around the world equate with power and democracy are gone but "America" is not an image it is a concept. That concept is only strengthened by our pulling together as a team. If you want to kill us, leave us alone because we will do it by ourselves. If you want to make us stronger, attack and we unite. This is the ultimate failure of terrorism against The United States and the ultimate price we pay to be free, to decide where we want to work, what we want to eat, and when & where we want to go on vacation. The very moment the first plane was hijacked, democracy won.</text>

<text> On the morning of September 11, I woke up not knowing that this day would be remembered for years to come. I arrived at school and went through first period, still oblivious of what was going on in the world around me. It was only until my second class that my teacher informed us that the World Trade Center had been attacked.
I did not understand the extent of what he was saying until he allowed us to go online to research the event. My computer screen filled with horrible pictures of smoke, airplanes, and the crumbling towers. It was then that I realized how many lives would be changed, and how many people were now gone due to the terrible tragedy.
After school, I rushed to turn on the television to find out more information. I saw the replay of the events of that morning. The stunned look on the faces of the newscasters, the people running down the streets of New York, staring up in disbelief at what was going on before their eyes. It was a horrible shock to the nation and a day I'm sure none of us will ever forget. I wonder if there will ever be a day when the date September 11 will be said without bringing on the rush of emotion that we now associate with it.</text>

<text>I wake up for work at 8:30 am every morning. When I woke the morning of September 11th, 2001, it was unlike any other day. I remember listening to Howard Stern, and a caller called in to the show to say something about airplanes crashing into a building in New York City or otherwise. I didn't think much of it, and I went on my way to work. I arrived at work at 9:15 am, still not knowing what was going on. At 10:30 am, my Asst. Director came to us and told us that and airplane had struck The Pentagon in Washington D.C. We had no idea what was going on, but soon after, everyone was concerned. I work in a daycare in the downtown area of Pittsburgh and of course, everyone was on alert. We immedately turned to the news channel on am radio and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The entire daycare and the city was in chaos. After hearing that a hijacked airplane was around the Pittsburgh area was very frightening. We immediately starting evacuating the children, calling parents, sending children home to be with their families. Since I am not married and have no children of my own, I volunteered to stay at work until the last child was gone for the day. I left work at 2:30pm. Downtown Pittsburgh was so quiet at this point. Nothing was open. The buses were quiet, very few passengers aboard. People were already on the streets, selling hot-off-the-press newspapers of what had happened that day in NYC, D.C. and Shanksville, PA. I continued to take the bus to my parents house to be with my Mother who had already been watching the news all day long. When I arrived, I was finally able to watch images of what had happened on CNN Headline News and I was appalled. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Nothing will ever be the same. It took a very long time to get back to normal, to be able to feel safe going to work let alone walking outside the house. God Bless those who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001. We will never forget. xo</text>

<text>I went to work at 7:00 a.m. at McConnell AFB and got all my work done for the afternoon. When our shop turned on the tv we saw one plane hit the first tower and then the other tower got hit and fell....I was in total shock!!! For the rest of the day our shop watched the news not believing what just happened, relatives were phoned. I am from Wichita KS so I knew my family was alright but my mom was afraid they were going to deploy me asap. We got released early from work that day so we could reflect and get into reality what just happened hours ago...I will never forget that day as long as I live. I am just thankful for my family being ok but will always have my heart poured out to the lives that were lost and to the familys. "United we stand"

Sincerely,
SrA Danielle L. Hardin</text>

<text>I have lived in New Jersey my whole life, but have always had a special place in my heart for NYC. I actually worked for about 6 months right across the street from the trade center for awhile on Broadway-and commuted, shopped, met friends, etc. everyday. By Sept 11 2001, I was working midtown in the Chrysler building. On that morning I was coming into Hoboken with the thought that as usual on a beautiful day as it ironically was, I would take the ferry. Suddenly, someone yelled "oh my god!!!!" I looked out the window and saw right after the first plane hit. Fire and a big hole. I thought it was a stupid pilot who was high or something mechanical. Never terrorism. It just doesn't happen here. I proceded to still go to work. I wanted to talk to my coworkers. I got there somehow and I find out that we were attacked. I cried and said some things I am not too proud of. Naturally the Chrysler building was a target as I thought all of New York was under attack. We evacuated-and spent the day runnning from bomb threats-seeing men my dads age crying-and walking around in utter confusion, sadness and terror. The firm I worked for said that if we wanted they would set us up for the night in a hotel and I said "NO WAY-IF I HAVE TO SWIM BACK TO JERSEY I AM GETTING OUT OF THIS CITY!!" Finally, we were able to get home from Penn Station. Everyone on the train was hugging each other and making sure everyone was okay. I still couldn't believe it. I got home finally feeling like I had been through a war or something. I had about 20 messages on my machine-(never felt that kind of love again). I watched the coverage for another day-then put on cartoons because I couldn't take it anymore. But I eventually came back to the city that I will always love-and love even more now-and went right back on the subways. They hurt us but they can't break us. God bless America and the men and women who died just being everyday heroes.

<text>Ever since that tragic day, my life has never been the same. There aren't enough words to describe the anguish felt by myself and my friends on September 11th. My best friend's boyfriend Nestor Cintron worked in one of the Towers for Cantor Fitzgerald and was among the lives lost that day. My friend Aris told me that he would call her every morning to wake her up and wish her a good day. They lived together and he always used to call her to wake her and tell her that he loved her. He called her up that day and woke her up, told her that he loved her and then forty-five minutes later the Towers collapsed. I live less than two miles away from the the World Trade Center and used to enjoy shopping there and really appreciated the beauty of it. The day the Towers went down, I felt as though I had lost a little of myself. The area where I lived was closed to any outsiders who did not reside there. The air was unbreathable. People walked as though they were in a trance. I cried so much just thinking about how cruel these individuals who planned this tragedy were. I was also shocked to learn about the Pentagon and about those other lives lost in the other plane crash. My entire community came together and several of us volunteered, donated blood and did what we could to help out. I felt a strong unity amoung New Yorkers, not just because we had to be united but because it was the only way to deal with this it. I still can't believe that this tragedy occurred but, we must now look to the future and pray and unite as Americans. </text>

<text>I was unemployed at the time. I was still sleeping when my mother in Georgia called me at around 6:30 am (California time). I was thinking that if she calls that early in the morning that something tragic happened to a family member. I braced myself for that kind of news when she told me that America was being attacked. "What are you talking about," I asked her, confused. She went on to tell me what was going on and that I need to go turn the TV on. After we hung up I stumbled to the living room, still in a confused state and turned on the news, and saw the picture of both towers on fire. Then a few minutes later a report came in about the Pentagon attack. Needless to say I stayed put that whole day. They virtually evacuated downtown San Francisco and the Bay and Golden Gate bridges were jammed with people trying to get out of SF. My sister lives in DC and I kept trying to call there all day but the circuts remained busy throughout the day. I mostly stayed home glued to the TV that entire day, which was probably a mistake, because that night I couldn't sleem much for the dreams I was having of airport control towers blowing up. I guess every generation has its defining day...December 7 1941, November 22 1963, April 4 1968. September 11 2001 will definite be that date for my generation. </text>

<text>On September 11, 2001, I was in Jacksboro, Texas, visiting with my mother. We (my brother, my mom and me) had just gotten into her pickup to go to the local restaurant (it's a small town) and headed off towards the square when I discovered I had left my purse behind and I needed it.

We turned back to the house and heard the reports on the radio. My mom thought it was a broadcast much like the Orson Welles one from years ago and then we realized it was REAL!!! As soon as I entered the house, my fiance was on the phone calling me from Louisville, Kentucky. We turned on the tv and sat there in shock for a minute then we left and went to her cousin's house a half hour's drive away. We watched it on the tv all afternoon. We could not believe that someone had attacked America here on our homeland.

My son was just 11 months old then but I decided he would know what had happened because it changed our nation's history and impacted billions of lives. I kept copies of the newspaper for him to read when he's old enough. I just pray he never has to see it happen again! God Bless ALL the victims and survivors of 9/11.</text>

<text>At 8:40am I was walking my dog in Prospect Park. I looked up and saw a plane flying extremely low, so low in fact that my dog even noticed it. Minutes later I heard a crash and heard sirens. A police car almost hit me it was flying so quickly.

By the time I got home I was receiving so many phone calls. Firstly, my godsister worked on the 101st Floor of Building 1 at Marsh & McLennan. Secondly, my mother lived a few blocks north in Independence Plaza. Thirdly,my mother-in-law drove a bus daily that passed the World Trade Center. So imagine my pain when I couldn't get in touch with these three people.

With regard to Linda Maier, there was no word from her. On the second day I pulled a tarot card which depicted a woman dressed in white with long blonde hair. When I saw the card I knew she had passed. My godmother is a psychic and Linda came to her in a vision with her deceased mother. She said it had happened so quickly that she had believed it to be an earthquake. That day she was on time (she was always late) and had worn white. Her body was never discovered but we had a lovely memorial service for her. She leaves behind a nine year old daughter, Isa and her love from childhood, Robert Ramirez.

My mother-in-law finally called me at 10pm on Sept. 11th. She was safe and sound. Tbe MTA had rerouted her bus and she was not permitted to travel below Houston Street.

As for my own mother, it was days before I received a call from a police officer who put my mother on the phone. Imagine the tears! I still cry when I think of it. She had been evacuated that day and all phone lines and electrocotu were down for almost a week. The survivor that my mother is, she was already contacting FEMA with regard to a vacuum cleaner that would remove the "white soot that never appears to go away."

As for me, it was a time of such sorrow and joy that will remain etched in my memory forever. It wasn't until that very day that I remembered how I had wound up in Brooklyn. I had been living in a loft apartment a few blocks south of the Empire State Building. Some friends of mine had showed me a movie regarding the prophesies of Nostradamus and warned me that a plane would hit the Empire State Building that July and that the building would collapse on my home. They moved to Austrailia and I fled to Brooklyn. Imagine a year and a half later when these predictions came to fruition.

<text>After my first class of the day, I heard a few people talking about some plane crash in New York. I had no idea of what it was at the time, but it didn't concern me much. PLane crashes happen, right? When I arrived in my second class, the television was on to aome news network and live footage of the towers was playing. By this time, both towers had been hit but were wtill standing.
My first feeling was shock, and I know it lasted for the rest of the day. In all of my classes for the rest of the day, we watched tlevision. What struck me most about the television coverage was how visibly shaken the reporters were. For once, they were allowed to let down their masks of calm, and their fear and sadness showed through. For once they seemed as human as the rest of us.
After that, my benevolence towards the media faded as they almost comstantly replayed images of the planes crashing or the towers falling. It nearly made me physically ill and it did make me ill mentally. I stopped watching the news because I did not want to watch those thousands of people dying over and over again. I'm not sure if I imagined it or not, but I swear I could see people jumping from the buildings, trying their chances with a fall rather than stay in the flames of the building.
I was not caught up in the patriotism that ensued, nor was I bent on revenge. Some of the events that followed made me ashamed to be American at all (the attacks on Muslims and Arabs who had no connection to the attacks whatsoever).
I became more cynical and disgusted in matters concerning the governent. I already didn't like Bush, and the almost immediate retaliation did not endear him to me. Bush claims to be a Christian, but he was not even following the most basic guideline for actions that Christians hold dear: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. He seemed to twist that into "You have done this to me and now I will do it to you." Revenge gets us nowhere. The only thing it accomplishes is to give morticians more work.</text>

<text>I dropped my son off at high school and returned home to the television still on, telling us that something had happened. A plane had flown into the World Trade Center. All the world seemed to believe it was an accident of horrible magnitude. As I flipped through the channels, my oldest son called me from his home. All he could say was, "What is the matter with these planes, another one just crashed." It's mind boggling, and, yes, quite heartening to know that he, as well as many people nation-wide could not fathom such destruction could be brought against others intentionally. Not only lives were lost that day, much innocence was lost. Just like the parent who tears up when dropping their child off for their first day of school, knowing that they are growing up a little that day, we mourn the loss of innocence that helps us all to be trusting, probably naive, individuals.</text>

          <elementTextContainer>
            <elementText elementTextId="234645">
<text>September eleventh is a day that will be in everyone?s minds perpetually. It started out as a mundane day, where I suspected nothing out of the ordinary to happen, yet who would know that history would forever be changed on this particular day? I was just proceeding from gym and going to my third period class, English. As I imperturbably walked to English, I noticed that all the classrooms had the television monitors turned on, which was unusual. As soon as I reached English class I realized what had happened to the ?Towers?. A commercial airplane had just crashed into one of the ?Towers?.
My first reaction was that the incident was just a mishap due to technological malfunctions or deficient navigational directions, yet still the thought of this catastrophic event being intentional never crossed my mind. Although that thought and my initial reaction was then expunged once the second plane collided with the other tower. I then felt anger towards the people who could implement such a ghastly tragedy upon their own mankind. Are we not all human, though we may look different from one another, in perspective we are still humans? Several people in this world have an arduous time dealing with people that are different. Although, is it not the variations among mankind that indeed makes this world go around, for wouldn?t life be tremendously dreary and monotonous if everybody was like everyone else? I not only felt anger, but deep dejection for the ones who lost their lives and for the families of the victims as well. I did not lose anyone in the terrifying tragedy, but in a way I still felt as if I had. I feel that everyone is connected together in one way or another and when countless, innocuous people lose their lives, it effects everyone in their own personal way.
Also, I believe that everyone?s lives have changed after the attack, whether they actually had a connection with the victims or not. Throughout the day I witnessed both of the towers fall to the ground. It was even more disquieting to see that the hijackers knew where to direct the planes, so, as the towers would eventually collapse to the ground. Why would other human beings want to cause so much anguish to other innocent people that intended no harm? I also witnessed throughout the day the terror and perplexity of the people and the circumstances that surrounded their situation. I feel that the survivors and the families of the victims have great valor to live their lives with the injuries they sustained, physically and emotionally, and the impediments that they must endure everyday of their lives. There is no amount of pain that could compare with that of which they must live through each day of their lives. Yet, there is a quote that I find valuable in time of need and it is, ?Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it,? as stated by Helen Keller. Many people take things for granted in this world, but life is short and you must live everyday as if it is your last because you may never have another chance to do the things you love. Subsequent to this dreadful tragedy, there was another quote that came to my mind. It is, ?Time will bring you better tomorrows,? though the author of this particular quote is anonymous, it may help those in need, because there will always be better tomorrows no matter how calamitous a situation seems, there will always be something better in the future. ?The past cannot be changed, the future is still in your power,? ~ Hugh White.

<text>"Hey chris, you have your tv on?" Asked my friend Dr. Arnold. "nope im busy with stuffs. Why what about it?" I answered. "A plane just crashed at the World trade center man. "Geez bro ok im gonna go check it out, bye". I put down the phone turned on the tv and just then the 2nd plane hit the other tower then erupted into a ball of flames. And then i screamed "Oh God, my brother!"

My brother mike works as a system analyst with the credit suisse first boston located in what used to be building 10. It was 9 in the morning and mike have had the habit of having his breakfast there at the tower.

My intial reaction was to call him at his mobile but then all the communication system in the entire east coast area was already down. And there is no way for me to reach him through his pager even. No phone calls from him or even a call to any of my other siblings situated across the continental US. It was past 1 a.m. (local time) when i believe my brother was already dead.

I was devastated and was already making funeral plans at the back of my mind. Provided there would be a body. I cried, i prayed (most of our family are born again christians) and asked God for strength to help us through.

At around 4 am the phone rang and then i heard a very familiar voice saying, "it's ok bro,it's ok. Thank God we're all ok!"

No body from the credit suise first boston were among the dead and call it divine intervention or anything, my good brother for the first time in his almost 8 years with the company, he came to work very late.

<text>My name is Daina Riecken. On September 11, 2001 I was 8.5 months pregnant with my first child. I had just dropped my husband, who is in the Army, stationed in Ft. Carson, Co, off at work. I came home and wanted to catch a couple more hours of needed sleep before I had to go to work myself. At 7:30 in the morning my co-worker called me and told me to turn on the t.v. and she asked me what part of New York my husbands family lived in. When I turned on the t.v. it didn't matter what channel it was everywhere. I didn't know if it was real at first and then I really didn't know what to think or say. The only real thing I could do was get on my knee's and pray. When I walked out the door to go to work the whole world was quiet. It felt like the world had stopped. There wasn't even any sound. Everything was so still. Work ended soon after I got there. My boss and I were too scared to stay at work. We live in Colorado Springs, Co and since we didn't know what or if something was going to be hit next, we wanted to be with our families incase it turned out to be Norad. When I got a hold of my husband at the base he didn't even know what had happened, no one did until he turned on the radio. The rest of the day went so slow. I had a million things running through my mind. I didn't even know what was going to happen with my husband yet. I think that the one thing that scared me the most is that I could not get a hold of my husbands family who I knew went to Lower Manhattan often.
As the day ended I got to go to the base to take my husband and another soilder dinner. I couldn't help but cry when I saw Cheynne Mountain (Norad) in front of me. I had never seen so much security on the base. It was really scary and unsettling. When I got home I went to bed, I didn't sleep. The only thought I pondered over was, "how was I going to explain this day to my unborn daughter." To this day, a year later, I still can't put it into words. All I can say is that I pray every day for those who lost their loved ones and how proud I am to be an American, and a military wife. My husband is my hero. </text>

            <elementText elementTextId="234729">
<text>After having just celebrated our 1 year anniversary with his mother and stepfather in Phoenix, Arizona, my partner and I set out to spend some time with his father and stepmother in Bend, Oregon. We elected to go through Las Vegas instead of going through Los Angeles, mainly because we wanted to spend a couple of hours in Vegas - cramming as much as we could into that short amount of time.

We headed out about in the early morning of September 11th. As the sun started coming up, we were approaching a tiny town in the middle of nowhere named Weikiup, Arizona. It was the only town for miles, and the only restaraunt in the entire town was a Subway located in the town's only gas station. We weren't too keen on the idea of having sandwiches for breakfast, but we didn't have much of a choice. As we were purchasing our breakfast, one of the workers asked me if we had a radio in our car. I told her that we did, but that the antenna wasn't working properly, so we couldn't pick up much (especially out there). She said that a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center, but she couldn't make out much on their tv or radio. We kinda dismissed it as a minor accident (thinking that it was a small personal aircraft as opposed to a full jetliner). So we resumed our trip.

It wasn't too much longer before we began approaching the Hoover Dam. As we started getting close to Vegas, our radio started working. I tuned in to the news stations to listen to what was going on. We were in shock when we realized that it was an attack. Not being able to get good information other than the radio report, we weren't sure exactly what was happening in our country.

We crossed the Hoover Dam, but there was a ton of security everywhere. We heard not five minutes later that they were shutting down the traffic over the dam. Had we been a few minutes later, it would probably have forced us to go several hours out of our way.

As it was, we pulled into Vegas. It was fairly quiet, I'm sure, as to what it is normally like. We parked at Caesar's Palace and went inside. The shopping area was closed. Only the casino's and hotel areas of Vegas were open. Pretty much all other attractions and public places were closed. We were disappointed that the one day we could be in Vegas was the one day it was pretty much shut down, however, that was completely overshadowed by the events that were unfolding before us.

We found our way to the lounge at Caesar's Palace with the HUGE screens where people unfortunate enough to not be able to get tickets to the fights that were held there watched it all on tv. The screens were taller and wider than several movie screens. Every channel was showing coverage of the events, and it was very eerie to watch the towers fall over and over. It brought tears to my eyes to know how many lives were lost, and to know that the world had just been changed forever.

Like most people in the country, I'm sure, I was afraid of what was yet to come. Was there going to be a war on our home soil? Possible nuclear attacks? With little to no information available, everything was uncertain. I had visions of our freedoms being taken away...of American's suffering and dying all around us. I was afraid for me and my family, as well as all of America.

Brandon took my hand and we just sat there staring at the screen in horror. Chills ran down my spine. I thought the world was coming to an end. But something made me look over at my love, and all at once I knew that everything was going to be ok. I knew that we would make it through. The world may have been forever changed. America suffered a wound that it would never forget. But I knew that we would survive. And I knew that I was safe...because I was with the one that I loved. And no matter what was to come - they couldn't take the love in my heart away.

After a while, we got up and left the lounge. We visited a lot of the other hotels. I called my parents to check in on them as we were approaching the hotel New York, New York. It was extremely eerie. Of particular interest was the black and white photo of the towers just outside of the restrooms. There were people all around, seemingly going about their business. But there was a sort of silence that seemed to persist. You could feel the gloom. People tried to salvage their vacations, but found that they simply could not enjoy themselves with the tragedies that had just occurred.

Most of the attractions were closed, but we did manage to get to enjoy the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton. I could not help but think about the message of Star Trek - about a future in which humankind exists in harmony with one another...and how far we have to go to achieve that. As a gay man, I had experienced the best and worst in people. But somewhere deep inside of me, I knew that there was hope...we just had to find it.

Now it's two years later. Brandon and I are no longer together. Life has carried us in separate directions, but my love for him lives on. I will never forget that day, and what having him by my side meant to me. I believe that there will always be a part of us that will forever be in Las Vegas on that tragic day. And no matter where life takes us, the events that occurred on that day will stay with us forever.</text>
