It was my best friend telling me to turn on the TV that "something was happening." I turned on the news channel and heard the reprt of the first plane striking the Towers. As I watched in stunned disbelief,the second plane struck. I couldn't believe my eyes. I called the school that I teach at to make sure that they were aware that America was under attach. They had already heard the news. I returned a call to my friend to have someone to talk to. She said, "I don't think it's over yet." A short time later we heard that a plane hit in Washington. We ended our conversation to sit and stare at the TV. Then the news of Pennsylvia. I'm 50 years old, recovering from surgery and all I could think of was that I wanted to fight back. I wanted to join our military in any position in which I could be helpful. I suddenly understood how my parents' generation must have felt upon hearing of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I cried, I gasped, I sat in silence. When reports came through that Bin Laden and his group were responsible, I grew angry, not at Muslims, but at radical muslims. I wondered what arrogance these men and others had to say they they knew God's will and were acting on His behalf. I have been wearing the American Flag pin on my clothing ever since. I have a flag on my door and on my car. I realized just how much I loves this country of ours, and I have prayed for those who lost their lives and for our leaders every day since. Remembering as a child stories of ?WAR,? the first thing that comes to mind is the Vietnam War, thousands died and we still have no clue as to why. During these moments of silence and reflection God has allowed me to reflect on what was, what could be, and what is. Suddenly I?m reminded of his word when he said, live each day as if it was your last. So, I guess we should ask ourselves if this was my last moment in time, is this what I would want to be remembered for? Is this the place God would want me to represent him in, and am I doing his will? Uuummm! Interesting! This is not the time for momentary change; this is the time for a lifetime commitment to first self then to God. I say self first because we must always, after talking things over with God do a self-check and make the choice within, then the commitment of changing our mind set before coming to the throne. I say live! As if it was your last day! Don?t let the sun go down on your anger, but let it rise up in the truth of love, life and the pursuit of happiness, the things in which we were taught our forefathers wanted for us. Liberty and Justice for all- the blind balancing scales of justice should now mean something to us. For now we must stand united in Christ, not caring if someone is Black, White, Jewish, or Gentile as Martin Luther King dreamed to see one day. Right now and I hope forever more race does not matter, for the first time I understand what our country stands for. How sad it had to take loosing our brethren at the hands of those who do evil unto us! I believe in order to continue to build a United States- it will take each and every one of us- no matter race, creed, or color just as it will be it heaven. God said what is bound on Earth is bound in heaven. God, I pray your will be done and as we unite we will form bonds that will be eternal. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was driving down the George Washington Memorial Parkway to my office 2 blocks from the White House. For some reason I did not have the radio on that morning. As I approached the Roosevelt Bridge I heard unusally loud jet engines passing overhead. I thought "this is strange," because I knew that was not a normal flight path for planes arriving into Reagan National. As I entered onto the bridge into Washington, I heard behind me a loud BANG, which i first thought sounded like a truck hitting a very large pothole. Once I got off the bridge, the scene on Constitution Avenue was contained chaos. Police, fire and Secret Service vehicles were speeding past each other back and forth in every direction. Only when I finally got to my office did I learn what had just happened, and that what I had heard was the sound of Flight 77 circling back over Washington and crashing into the Pentagon. My first reaction was thinking "how could we have let this happen? Isn't this why the CIA was created in the first place, the reason for its existence?" Then I remembered 1993 and thought "they just wouldn't leave them (the WTC towers) alone." I had just gotten to work, turned on my computer when we heard the news. Not knowing the severity of the collision, but still very uneasy, we continued to go on with our day. Minutes later, we heard of another plane crashing into the second tower. Reality hit that this was not an accident. Cries carried throughout the building of co workers who had friends or relatives that worked at the WTC. As we all squeezed into a hallway to watch the television broadcast, all that could be heard were our gasps and cries as the first building collapsed. Then the second. I can't remember If the Pentagon was hit prior to this or after. It felt like a nightmare. Some of us went outside to contain ourselves. How eriee it was to listen to the silence of the air for the first time ever. Not a plane was taking off and only a few were landing. I couldn't stand not knowing what was going to happen next. Were there more out there? I needed to be with my family. I left work not caring what the consequences were. I just remembered how I prayed all of the way home. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: When that tragic event took place last year, I was at my job....Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel, New Jersey. I had just finished making a delivery to the ICU wing on the 4th floor. I remember hearing from one of my fellow employees "Oh my God, a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center!" Right away I thought, "Right, sure, what's the punch line......but...there wasn't any....this was REAL.....VERY REAL. I quickly ran into one of the rooms where there was a television on and saw what was just told to me just minutes ago....I just went completely numb. Shortly afterward, I had to head back down to the 1st floor to continue my deliveries and between the time it took me to reach the 1st floor(by elevator), two of my bosses were standing in the hallway looking as pale as ghosts. I had asked if they had heard what had happened....and they said..yes Ray, and there was another plane shortly after that one and we saw it hit the other tower on live television! My God!! All I could think of doing was to quickly get to a telephone and call my wife and let her know what had happened. She had worked the night before, so she was very tired....but, with the news I told her she woke up very fast....and she became hysterical. I cried along with her and then we both calmed down. Shortly afterward I called my father to see if he had known what had happened...he did not know. And just as we were speaking on the phone, the next plane crashed in Pennsylvania. Right there I lost all control of my anger and sadness.....TOTALLY! Now, during all of this time it was announced over the hospital p.a. system that we(Bayshore Hospital) were put on Severe Alert Status, and that we would be getting various medical supplies choppered in from our main medical supplier Allegiance. A total of seven helicopters came at various times throughout the day. Gradually, we did start to get some patients(mainly walk-ins) in the emergency room. Various injuries from smoke inhalation,cuts and bruises and the like. I believe approximately 20 to 30 people were treated at the hospital. It turns out that no one ever experienced this type of emergency ever before...not even close. I had asked my boss what we needed to do....all she said was" This is new to me too, and I've been here for 25 years." " Just get what we need when we ask you too and we will do just fine...it will get very busy around here." And that it did indeed. In closing, I would like to say, although I lost no relatives or friends in the attacks, my heart goes out to all of those families who lost a loved one and to the many heros who helped in the rescue, recovery and massive clean-up efforts that took place: God Bless America and PLEASE LET US PRAY FOR PEACE!!! Tell us your story: I am a Computer tech, I am also a professional bass guitarist that played in the WTC Windows of the World Restaurant, I was working at One Liberty Plaza on this day and I was on the 12th Floor. I was working on the west side of the building that is facing the World Trade Center. Suddenly the first plane hit the Towers. I rushed to the windows to see NYC turned into a madhouse of Fire, debris, fallen people, windows, buildings, people....people...people....hanging from the windows of the WTC trying to find peace from the fire..... I turned to my supervisor and said that they are bombing the WTC and we should get out of the area ASAP and I ran around the floors to tell people to leave the building and go home......then an announcement came over the speaker for us to leave the WEST side of the building but not to leave the building......I went to the Internet to see if any news was on regarding the incident......then suddenly the second plane hit the WTC......the announcement NOW was to leave the building and escape the area ASAP...... I was looking for some of my friends to get our of the building.....I helped three pregnant women get to the subway safely....at this time we could not see and the place was a totaled mess.....heat from the second plane could be felted on the ground floors. Everything was disoriented and in disarray....I found the subway with these three woman and then took the A train to my sons school to go home?..there were people on the subway that had no idea that our world above them was falling to pieces and that it was indeed time to pray for God?s safety for their own lives....I picked up my two boys from school and traveled into Harlem, NY where a person gave us a ride to 125th Street near my home. When we got to 23rd Street everyone stopped to see a sight that I could never forget....it was the first building falling to the ground....I never got the name of this family that picked my and several people up on the streets that day.....but I thank Jesus Christ for seeing to my safety and allowing my family to remain. I lost several dear friends that day as well as people that I worked with in the WTC Restaurant. I am just thankful to God that I am here to tell my story. It was just an ordinary day of basic training for the United States Army. My company was to be bussed out to a site were we would set up our tents and practice shooting our weapons. That morning we marched out to the bus stop and were waiting for the bus. I remember the First Sergeant walking out to our group and telling the drill sergeants that they all were needed in a meeting. I didn't know then that what was about to be said would forever change the nation, the way my company was trained, and how I would feel about wearing the Army uniform. It didn't seem like the meeeting lasted that long. Our drill sergeant came back and said "The pentagon is on fire, and a plane has just crashed into the World Trade Center. Thousands of people work at the Trade Center at any given day." That was all he said. At first everyone didn't beleive him. We all looked at each other and there were whispers of the question that was on everyone's mind: Was he kidding? When the buses pulled up shortly we all knew he wasn't kidding. THe bus drivers' faces were all somber and there was just a general atmosphere of saddness surrounding them. That was the first bus ride were everyone was quiet. No one said a word; we all were straining to hear the radio. All day we had little updates. We all listened intensly. Because of that day's events the sleepign out was canceled. We were taken back to the barricks, and for the forst time we soldiers-in-training were called upon to do some real guarding of a perimeter. Our company area was closed off and no one was allowed in unless they worked in the area. From that day on the training for us soldiers got more intense. The general concensus was that the traing was for real. At any given moment after traingn, any one of us could be called to fight for our nation. Since that day, I wear my uniform with more pride than I ever imagined. This IS MY NATION, for this nation I would give my life. America, I am proud to serve you. To the people of America, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for all the support you have given to me, other service members, and to each other. Terrorist what you tried to defeat has just grown bigger and stronger. America will not be defeated. SHE WAS VERY STRONG THAT HE WOULD CALL WE JUST HAD TO WAIT. I WISH I WAS HALF AS STRONG AS HER. I COULDN'T WAIT ANY LONGER SO I CALLED MY WORK PLACE AND TOLD THEM THAT I WAS GOING TO FIND MY DAD. I HAD ALL THE SUPPORT I NEEDED AND WE WERE OFF. I KISSED MY SON GOOD BYE AND TOLD HIM ME AND DAD WERE GOING TO GO FIND GRANDPA AND WE WOULD ALL BE HOME SAFE SOON. I WENT TO CLOSE THE DOOR AT MY MOTHER IN LAWS WHEN THE PHONE RANG AND IT WAS MY MOTHER. SHE HAD HEARD FROM HIM AND HE WAS O.K. HE WAS ON HIS WAY HOME. THEY HAD THEM IN BOMB SHELTERS AND THEY COULD NOT CALL. I THINK I CRIED MORE WHEN I HEARD HE WAS OK THEN WHEN I DID NOT KNOW. MY HUSBAND IS A FIREMAN AND HE GOT TOGETHER WITH SOME OF THE GUYS AND THEY WENT TO NEW YORK FOR THREE DAYS AT GROUND ZERO. I THINK IT TOOK ME 6 MONTHS BEFORE I HAD A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP. SOME TIMES I WOULD GO 3 OR 4 DAYS WITH OUT SLEEP. THIS DAY MADE ME THINK MY WHOLE LIFE OVER AND HOW I WOULD LIVE MY LIFE FOR NOW ON. THIS IS A DAY ONE DAY THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOR EVER. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On 9/11/01, I was on my way to work via the Garden State Parkway going to North Brunswick, NJ. I had my radio on, was in my car, by myself, like thousands of others traveling on the parkway making their way to work or ther destinations. When announceded the first plane hit, there were many contridicting stories on the radio, I was still in my car when the sencond plane hit, just arriving at work, when I enterend my place of employmentment people were cryng and trying to get as much informaintin as possible. My coworker had a daugher working at tower onee we tried franticly for hours to locate her. Finally though a call from a coworker of hers we discovered she was out of the building and not injured.. I had many friends I worried abouttthat day of their wereoubouts. It took many hours, and days to find out of their wellbeing. This is a day I will never forget, and no one should ever let slip from there minds and hearts. I am wriing this just after watching the one year dedication to all those who lost their lives due to this act of terror on America. I cry for those lives lost, and my heart ackes for those who have to continue with their empty spaces in their lives. I can only say, which is hard to imagine, carry on and be strong for yourself and your family, mainly the small childereen. Teach your children to be caring and loving and not to continue in bitterness.. But be a strong AMERICAN for those lives lost ... You are our future now. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work, about 2 blocks south of the towers.. We heard the first explosion, but thought nothing of it. Then colleagues at out Jersey City location asked us if we were OK and if we were evacuating. We had no idea why they were asking this, then it was all over the news. We were in awe. Then, we heard a roar of an airplane, it went directly over us, then a huge explosion, one that I will never forget. Everyone in the office started to get more and more concerned.. would they fall?.. were there more planes coming?.. would we make it home alive ??. In retrospect, staying inside instead of going out right away probably saved us from exposure to the debri. When the towers came down, it was instantly night, the building was engulfed, smoke and ash was coming thru the vents and windows. It was very hard to breathe. I still have a caugh. I will never forget that day, it seems as if it were yesterday, still have nightmares, still get saddened when I think of the people stranded at the top of the towers, the friends I lost, the feeling I would never see my family again. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was sitting at work, awaiting the arrival of co-workers who were flying in from other states for a meeting. When we heard the radio announce the first plane had hit the World Trade center. I then received a phone call from co-workers in Jersey City who had just witnessed the 1st plane and then the 2nd plane hit. We then gathered in our lunchroom to watch the broadcast. Due to the devastation, we were sent home to be with family and friends. I did not know anyone personally who died or lost a loved one, but did have a co-worker in Jersey City lose her husband, though I did not know her or her husband my heart aches for her. I have two children ages 10 and 12 and I hope and pray that they never again have to experience anything like this. Our main office was located in 7 World Trade Center until 06/2001 and we are very grateful that we decided to move our operation out of New York into Jersey City when we did, or this devastation could have and would have crippled our business. I pray for all of those lost in the September 11, 2001 tragedy, and pray that for all those found alive that someday they will be able to live again and not fear everytime a plane crosses over that something this devastating is going to happen again. I will keep all of those lost in my heart, and pray everyday for those here with us today, that time will heal the scars. Tell us your story: On the morning of Sept 11, 2001, I was on my way to fill-in for a pharmacist on vacation at Rite-Aid Pharmacy located in Galax, VA. On the way to work, I had an overwhelming sense of dread and depression for no apparent reason. When I reached the store, which opened at 9am, I shared my misgivings with my co-workers of the day. Within minutes of opening, a pharmacist from another store called and told us of the tragic event of the first tower. We all rushed to get a radio and listened as the second tower was hit. All of us were shocked and horrified that anyone would commit such an act of terrorism. Next, as we listened, we heard about Washington, D.C., and immediately I tried to call one of my friends that works for the FCC. The message that I received was that the phones were down due to a natural disaster, of which this definetly was not! Afterwards, we heard of the tragedy in Pennsylvania with the heroism of those on the plane saving our beloved country from certain disaster. How grateful we all should be of their selfless act of courage. A year later, I am still shocked and horrified at this horrific act of terrorism to our country. My heart and prayers go out to all of the victims and families of 9-11-2001, their loss has caused all of us to rebond as one nation under GOD! May we continue to grow and become stronger as we learn to cope and survive this act of terrorism. Tell us your story: The Red, White, and Blue Will Forever Fly Strong Even though I still set the alarm to go off at 5:30 in the morning I was unable to get out of bed because of an "argument" with a logging truck that wanted to use my side of the road a week earlier to the day at 9:05 in the morning. Needless to say I lost that "battle" but not the one in court. After about 15 minutes of lying there glued to every word that was being said on the radio, I suddenly remembered that I have a TV and turned it on. It was right before the second plane hit. Like many Americans watching the horror unfold that day I was shocked. I was in a daze. This wasn't happening! This couldn?t be happening! No one in their right mind would attack us! I had to ask myself, "Was the accident a week earlier an omen? Was I getting premonitions like my Dad did?" As I laid there and watched the tragedy play out in vivid color I thought about how a ?terrorist? had turned my world upside down and brought it to a screeching halt a week earlier. Then I thought, if Osama bin Laden was after the same effect then he did one hell of a job. He had succeeded in bringing the mightiest country in the world to its knees. He had succeeded in bringing our ?prefect? world to a screeching halt. He knocked the wind out of us. He hit below the belt. But it wasn?t for long. For me the ?event? also had one, and only one, good point. It brought the country together. There was no more every shade of the rainbow. There were only three colors. Red. White. And blue. We were one people. We were one unity. Everyone pulling together for one great cause. To show the world that no matter what, ?WE SHALL OVERCOME!? Like everyone else in the United States I wanted to go to New York and help. But how? By plane? I don?t think so. Cross country? Maybe if a few people got together. Patriotism swelled in out hearts. I sat and practiced ?The Battle Hymn of the Republic? ?America? and other patriotic songs on the piano. Now I knew just how my parents and grandparents felt that fateful day 60 some odd years ago. And just like back then, it brought us all together. We formed a greater nation of one people. And just like they were back then I was angry. I wanted revenge. I wanted to kick some ass and take some names. I was totally behind any retaliation and even thought about rejoining the Armed Forces if they took people my age. I took pride in the fact that a lot of young people felt the same way and joined the Armed Services. But at the same time it brought back memories of how I felt during the Vietnam ?War?. To this day I still can?t bring myself to watch a war movie. Its been a year now, a very fast year, and both events in my life are still burning bright in my memory. As usual the world has backed off a little and left us to ?police? the world and its ?gangs? of bad guys once again. Now we?re after Iraq once again to let us in their country to check for nuclear weapons and once again the world doesn?t want to get involved. And as I was driving to work, I heard that another had struck. What I felt was a mixture of disbelief,, shock and fear. I wondered how could this happen? Why us? Arn't we good people? How can others view us as evil? We are a kind nation full of kind caring people. How could this happen? I thought of other countries, countries that have been living with terrorism for so so long. Why is this allowed to happen? Before 9/11, I would read and hear of other countries troubles and feel bad for them. But it was a different world from mine. Why did it take this to happen to my country for me to feel genuine compassion for others who have been living this for years? My disbelief,shock and fear turned to questions. I question myself? And finally, I am angry. How could this happen to my country?? MY COUNTRY???? I'm saddened. I don't believe the saddness will ever go away. All the people murdered. All the people hurt. I pray not only for all Americans,, but for all people. This is my country. I love my country. I really realize now how lucky I am to be an American. All of a sudden, over the intercom, the pricipal announces that the world trade centers have been struck by terrorists and that all of the teachers need to turn on their televisions. All of us got worried. People, including the teachers, started saying that there was a really good chance we were going to get attacked because we live in the "chemical valley" of West Virginia. The were telling us what to do if we did get attacked. I got super worried when I heard that the pentagon had been attacked because my aunt worked in the part that was attacked. It was two days later when my mind was at rest. I had found out that she had taken the day off to go play golf with her husband. I recently visited ground zero. That brung some tears to my eyes to thing that I was where thousands and probably tens of thousands of people died. This is my 9/11 story. Thanks.
