Tell us your story: I can't remember exactly what class I was in when I first heard the news, but I can tell you where I was when the first tower fell. My school is about 45mins away from New York City and most people commute to the city for work. So, when we first heard the news, all the teachers basically suspended their classes to let the kids call their parents to make sure they were okay. We have a television is every classroom, lining the hallway ceilings, and in the library, and lounges. And there wasn't a T.V. that wasn't turned on and tuned into the news nor a T.V. lacking a group of kids surrounding them watching and listening intently. During the course of the morning I found myself down in the library trying to figure out exactly how close my very good friend's school was to the Twin Towers when the first tower fell. The librarian's had set up chairs in front of the T.V. But the crowd was so big, I was standing. I was staring in awe, not quite comprehending what was happening, when my friend came up behind me and said, "That was one of the Twin Towers. It just fell." Neither the words nor the pictures registered in my mind at first. It was such a shock, and I couldn't get my mind around the fact that a plane had flown into the building and that it had just collapsed before my eyes. And then to see, the plane crash into the second building a short time after was more than words can describe. It was awful, hateful, and inhumane. The rest of the day is a blur. I went home and waited till my Mom got back from the City. Her story is more horrible than mine, because although I might have watched the towers fall on T.V. my mother watched them fall from the top of her office building. That night watching the news, learning what had happened, how the planes had been hijacked, how D.C. had been hit and that there was a plane intended to do damage in L.A. it was just so horrible. I'm sure I cried. I just couldn't believe that something so hateful could happen, especially to New York City. For the days following, I never knew how much patriotic spirit I had inside of me, not to mention the love I had for New York City. I went to the city the following weekend. Not down to the site, but to Times Square, and words can't describe what I saw. Patriotic spirit everywhere but then everything was deserted and deprived of people. So much in our world changed that day. We saw so much courage, pain, and the binding together of a Nation. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I walked into the Bank of America on N. Broadway in Nyack at about 9:05AM. I noticed that one of the customer service reps was listening intently to a radio set up on a counter. As I walked toward her I noticed a strange look on her face. She asked if I had heard about the commercial jet that flew into the WTC. My immediate thought was that it was an accident - that it had probably skimmed the top of the building and crashed. I headed over to a PTA meeting at a friend's home and as I opened the door, I heard the news from the television about the second jet crashing into the WTC. I worried about my husband (who normally works at the Met Life Building, but on this day he was at a seminar in Westchester) and my children (at 2 different schools in the district). All cell phone lines were down and I couldn't contact my husband - I was afraid that maybe he had changed his mind and gone into Manhattan instead. We all started to panic - we didn't know what other buildings were targets. When news came that the buildings collapsed, i ran home to make sure that my parents were okay and then went to my son's schools. I knew that we had many parents in the school worked in or around the WTC. We searched through the emergency contact cards because they listed the work addresses and telephone numbers for all parents or guardians. Many parents came to pick up their children, but my PTA co-members and I stayed to comfort the children and teachers that couldn't leave. The building was locked down and we waited for additional news. My husband made his way back to Rockland County and came to the school to find me - I cried when I saw him. I have never felt fear as I did on that morning. Our community lost sons, daughters, fathers and husbands that day - there is a sadness every single day since then. It's a sadness that horror and tragedy could befall any one of our families at any moment - that our friends and family members heading out to their "safe" jobs could become victims of terrorism. I am sad for my children - I didn't have to see these images and know this horror when I was growing up. I remember one of my patients screaming out, "Mrs. Hall! Come and see this!" I thought my patient had fallen out of her chair. When I arrived at her room , she was watching the news with a look of horror on her face. I asked her was she in pain,and she raised her arm , pointing at the television with one hand and covering her mouth with the other. I looked over at the television and watched as the first airplane hit the first building and then the second airplane hitting the other building. I prayed that this was either a movie or I was dreaming. I stood there next to my patient's wheelchair like my feet were glued to that very spot. I listened to the news reporter confirm my fear to what I had just seen. Something so horrible that I felt my heart skip 2 to 3 beats. I listened over our hospital intercom system , as the receptionist reported what was happening in New York. At this time I begin to walk away from my patient's room into the hallway where all of my co-workers were crying and hugging one another. I felt as though I was daydreaming and I was in a nightmare. I thought to myself "This kind of thing doesn't happen in real life. This kind of thing only happened in the past. Like with pearl harbor!Where is God! God please come down and explain to me what you just allowed to happen to innocent people!" I remembered walking into some of the people in the hallway and bumping into the walls while tears streamed down my face. I thought about the innocent people inside the buildings. I thought about the innocent people on the airplane and what they went through to know that they are about to die and kill other innocent peoople. I remember screaming to the top of my lungs"why!!!!" Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was a Senior in high school, and getting ready to go to school for Drumline practice when my mother woke me up screaming. I had passed out on the couch in the living room the night before and when I woke up the T.V. was on and I saw this plane going in a building. I didn't know what was going on and anything. My mother said a plane had crashed in to the WTC. I didn't know what it was or anything but as we watched T.V. a little longer, I watched LIVE as the second plane hit. I quickly got dressed and headed for the door. My mother asked where I was going and I told her I had to let the people at school know. The only people at school that early was administrators and the Band who was practicing before the sun even came up. I ran the mile to school and found a few friends in the hallway and told them. Everybody thought I was crazy so I grabbed my friends radio and turned the station and as they listened, everything went silent. A mob of 15 people ran into our band directors office and turned on the T.V. Our director thought is was some kind of show. To this day I here his words ring in my ears, "It's just a story." We dragged the T.V. into our band room which could hold up to a couple hundred students and more people showed up as the tragedy continued. We all watched as people jumped, and fell from the towers. We clung to our boyfriends, girlfriends, and family as watched helplessly while New Yorkers ran from the collapsing WTC2. Students and Faculty alike were crying. One friend in particular was crying because her brother was in the military and they went on high alert. With different radios and T.V.'s going on all around the room, we were trying to listen in on all that was going on. A Plane went down in P.A. and one had hit the Pentagon. It was unreal and I tried constantly to convince myself that this was a dream. It may seem stupid but it was the only thing that made me feel calm. Through out the day we all tried to comfort each other and we watched as casualties were evacuated from the buildings, and Rescueres went to work, doing what they do. I wasn't there but I felt the very same thing that those people in the buildings did....I think all America felt the same feeling on that day, though we can't put a name on it, we felt it. I cry everytime the news comes on and I am reminded that I could have been killed on September 11, 2001. I was suppose to go into Manhatten to a doctors appointment and I decide not to go just then I turned on the car radio and they were saing that the World Trade Center had been attacked. For the first time in my life I felt helpless. I remember approcahining 149th Street and the Grand Concourse and seeing the second building fall. I was in tears because I could feel all the death and the pain from people that I could not help. See, I am pior military and my job was to help people and defend this country with my life and ironiclly I had just finished my tour of 8 years in the US Army Reserve. As, the buliding fell i could smell the dust and the smoke and the mere sight of my childhood tumbling to the ground was heartbreaking. In 1968 when I was born the Twin Towers were just being built and I will always remember that shkyline forever. It was part of my life. I lost a good friend because of the WTC attacks and truthfully I will never forgive the people who did it, but I don't agree with making every muslium in the US suffer for something that they had nothing to do with. My friend Mark was only 21 years old and his mother and wife got caught in buliding one and two days later he killed himself. As long as there are countries who dislike the US and as long as the US gets into everyone elses business we will always become a target of other countries anger. I love the United States of America and I am happy to be part of this great country. I want to thatnk all the people who helped, prayed and were just part of our pain. I was sitting in the library and some kid ran it and yelled "Yo the World Trade Center is burning." Not beliveing a word of it, I continued working. On my way outside, I saw tons of people on the corner looking up the street, to where just across the Hudson River, the World Trade Center buildings looked like two giant burning cigars. Wait a minute, I just left my dad while getting off the PATH train at Exchange Place. He would continue the train ride until the WTC stop. I knew he worked in the building in front of it; World Financial Center(Merril Lynch) was where he worked. I was thinking everythings gonna be fine. I sat in Latin class and my dad appeard in the doorway. He was ok. But this didnt mean that everyone else was. We spent the rest of the day encouraging students who had parents or family in the towers that they would be ok. And then the unimaginable happened. I sat on the top floor of the building in my school and watched the North tower collapse; an image that I will never forget. Well it turned out one of my good friends fathers, made it out ok. But on the long descent thorugh Jersey City and back to Kearny, I would only discover that the pentagon had been hit. I went home that day and just watched the news. That night I went to a friends house to watch a movie; to help clear my mind. It was when I got home that I found out that my Godmother's nephew Chrisopher had been in the 92nd floor of the North tower and had not been seen. In the coming months he was soon prnounced dead. However my dad, who took the PATH train to the WTC stop everyday excpet one for 25 years was just greatly haunted. He worked right behind the towers in One Liberty Plaza and eventually in the World Financial Center. THe image of seeing bodies jump from the burning towers that he had the pleasure of looking at since they were built was simply too much for him. He tries to pretend sometimes it doesnt bother him, but I can tell its taken its toll. I myself was involved in the New York City Skateboarding scene, and after looking through tape after tape, I finally found the tape my friend made of the WTC at night and the grace it offered the city. I started calling family and friends. I had just dropped my 2 year old at preschool and I started freaking out. So, after many phone calls, I went back to the school and picked my children up then picked my 13 year old niece up at school. My best friend left work and picked her children up at school too. We all gathered at my house and watched everything on tv. I was really afraid of what the terrorist would do next. We have friends in New York and could not get in touch with them. I was very sad for everyone there. To celebrate the one year anniversary, I dressed my kids in red, white, and blue to honor all the wonderful lives that were so tragically lost on that day. The room I was in didn't have a T.V. so we did not really know what was going on. Then as we were going down to lunch someone said,"The Twin Towers have been hit." Well I thought that it was just a rumor. When we got down to the lunch room the teachers had the T.V. going and they were talking really quiet. That was when I saw it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My boyfriend woke me up around 9:45 telling me that I needed to go out on the balcony of our SW D.C. apartment. We lived across the Potomac from the Pentagon and all I saw was this thick black smoke across the sky. I asked him what happened and he said, "A jetliner crashed into the Pentagon and two more have hit the Trade Center towers." I looked at the television and couldn't believe what I was seeing. We had also felt something a little later as if a gas line or something exploded. It shook our building and the windows wobbled. There was no explanation for that, and we wondered if something else had happened. I called in to my job, where my boss was unaware. I was on the phone with her as the first Tower collapsed. She just said "Ohmigod!Ohmigod!" and got off the phone. I didn't find out until later that her son had been in Tower 2 that day and had been lucky and made it out. I was very unnerved for awhile seeing all the soldiers going by (I was near both an army and a navy base). There was nothing in the skies--which were silent-- and all you heard were military jets and helicopters. When they finally reopened National, I would wake up in the morning out of a sound sleep, freaked out and scared because the planes were so loud and seemed so low(I hadn't realized they had changed the flight patterns). I was home that morning when I heard the news. Being a New Yorker I just had to find a way to see for myself as it was just too unbelievable to comprehend on TV & Radio. On Sept 13th, 2001, just two days after this tragic event, my brother and I found a way to ground zero. It was like the Twilight Zone and we were in it. There were few people around and the silence was deafening. The smell was that of this sick distorted electric scent. Not bodies as one may imagine. What we experienced was nothing you can get from a television outside of the planes crashing into the buildings that we did see on TV. While we didn't see any bodies, and we were right in the thick of ground zero, the destruction was just insane and movie-like. The people we did see at the end of the journey were kind of confused and starry-eyed. Workers, military, relief aid etc.. We saw a fire truck that was crushed just beyond recognition. We could tell from the emblems. I won't mention what else we saw but things were just really like out of a horror movie. The most amazing feeling to me was that I felt like it was World War II. Everything was black & white and it was like watching an old movie but we were the characters. When I see an old movie, I always wonder why everything looks so gray even though I do realize there was no color at that time. It just reminded me of the holocaust and I mean no disrespect when you do a number's comparison. Just what I imagine the vibe may have been like when you see distruction first hand. While I cannot comment on the sudden fear of such an event like the holocaust or Sept-11th, I am just still amazed that this can actually happen in what are supposed to be civilized times. How off is that statement? It is as bad as it has ever been just with a different face. If you were not there to actually see the aftermath, it was an awakening in reality and a scene that has made me want to live everyday with a good full spirit in motion. Tell us your story: on the morning of september 11,2001, i was on my was to a friend's house. we both attended the same college and we always drove toghter. on this particular day i was a little early so i waited inside her house. we were in her room and we saw the result of the first plan hitting the tower, all we thought was that it was an accident. however as we continued to watch we saw the second tower attached. this was very surprising and we thought that it was a tradedy that was so close to home. on the way to school we keep the radio on to hear what was happing, half way there we found out that a plane had hit in D.C. we waited for our professor in class, who ran in and instructed us to go striaght home and be with our loved ones. i became very panacied not knowing what would happen next. i had a daughter in day-care and one at school. my father worked near the air-port and was stuck there. i also had a younger brother at school also. i rushed to the schools to get the kids who were very up-set and were full of questions. my day-care provider informed me that my youngest child was safe and to come later after things had been clamed down. i remeber going back to my friends house and being glued to the t.v. we were so scared because her brother is in the service and we couldn't reach him. i also remeber being upset because my cell phone wouldn't work and i couldn't get in touch with my relatives some that live in D.C. this had to be one of the most scariest days of my life and i will never forget it. i will always say a prayer for those fallen heroes and thier families.i can only imagine what they were going threw on that tradic day. I live in Brooklyn so I knew I had to leave quickly because the commute takes at least 50 minutes. As I got on the train things seemed normal. It was about 8:30am. I got on the Q express at Brighton Beach Avenue and started reading the Wall Street Journal. When I arrived at Dekalb Ave. I saw this young girl get on the train. She was a normal looking Black American but she had this strange look in her eyes. Suddenly our eyes met and then she looked away very quickly at others on the train. She then screamed out, "did you hear what happened, a plane crashed into the world trade center!!!" At first I thought she was crazy, then it hit me that it was the World Trade Center. Those buildings are tall and it was quite possible that an accident could have happened. I panicked! My girlfriend Cristina was in WTC2 working for Morgan Stanley on the 73rd floor and for all I know she could be dead. I ran upstairs out of the subway at Dekalb. Ave to the street level dumping my newspaper in the garbage. As soon as I got to the outside, I saw people running. Everything was moving so fast. I ran towards the Brooklyn Heights and as I got closer and closer I saw people crying. Then I saw the smoke. Then I saw the buildings on fire. There were flames shooting out and spreading down the building like termites. I completely forgot about everything around me and called Cristina at work. The phone was busy. I tried at least 20 times to get through within those few minutes while walking towards the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge. As I was dialing and dialing and getting closer to the bridge the view became more and more clear on how bad this was. I didn't know what was happening. I was hoping it was an accident but deep down inside I knew it was a terrorist attack. I thought my girlfriend was dead. I ran to the Manhattan Bridge with one thing in mind...to find Cristina. I knew I was okay and my family was safe because my brother worked uptown and my parents lived in Florida. My only concern was Cristina. Suddenly as I was continuously dialing to reach Cristina, Roxanne, and schoolmate of Cristina and mine?s called me on my other line on my cell phone. She said that Cristina was ok, she spoke to her and she told me that Cristina wanted me to meet her at her Grandmother's house on the lower east side by Ave. D and E 10th Street. When I got to the Manhattan Bridge, a cop had stopped me from crossing over. I said I had to get through. He told me he couldn't let it happen, the city was shutting down and it was dangerous for me anyways. I told him to listen to me and said that my girlfriend is over there and I am going to get her, you can arrest me, you can do whatever you need to do, but if it was you, you'd want me to let you go get her. He just grimaced at me and then grinned and pointed his arm towards the other side. When I was running over the bridge I had the perfect view of the situation. On my left were the towers I grew up looking out at from my parent?s bedroom window at home. I used to use them to tell me where in the city I was and where I was going. They were burning up in a thick black evil smoke. I would be lost with out them as well as if I were to lose Cristina but at this point I knew she was alive so I was a bit relieved. I still had other friends I was worried about like Michael Losardo and Danielle Lim and others. As I was staring at the towers while running over the bridge I saw a train pass over just to my right. I saw people looking at me running and I saw them looking at the towers burn while they were pressing their hands and faces and chests against the train doors and windows in horror and panic. The emotion was very present then. I thought I was in the middle of a movie. It just wasn't real. It could not have been happening. When I got over the bridge to the other side the cops over they?re just looked at me in a trance probably thinking why would I be coming into Manhattan when everyone else was leaving. I ran straight to Cristina's Grandmother's house and as soon as I got there screamed up to her window "CRISTINA, CRISTINA...? I saw her peak out and she came running down the stairwell and we hugged each other harder than we ever did. The rest of the day was just anxiety provoking. The Towers fell soon after I arrived at her grandmother's house and we just wanted to leave. Cristina's Dad worked by the courts downtown and he met us at the F train station by east Broadway. We hopped on and I spent the next three days with Cristina and her family. It was horrible for everyone and I will never forget the day I almost lost someone very important to me. Unfortunately, I lost others who were not only important to me but to the City of New York as well. NYPD, FDNY, EMS, PA Cops, WTC workers and Employees. They all contributed something to this city. My heart aches for so many who have had to experience such a horrible disaster. I work for the state of Michigan Community Health Department; and when I heard what had happed, a television was accessed to view what had occurred to our horror. I felt like someone took the air out of me, witnessing with my eyes, what happened and to then view "live" on television, the 2nd tower being crashed into. I did have such an empty feeling and helplessness of what to do, because with it all, I have a brother who is a captain for American Airlines who does fly the 767 aircraft which was used to crash into the WTCs. He also flys out of Dulles Airport. Immediately, I began to wonder if he was flying, where he was, was it his aircraft that crashed into the WTC. I called my mother and asked her if she was aware of what had taken place. She was unaware of what was going on and turned on the television. I asked her if she wanted to try to reach "Jerry" or if I should. She said she would try to call. We feel so fortunate because when she called, my brother answer the telephone. We knew he was safe. He had just left Dulles Airport late the evening before and arrived at Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport around 12:30 a.m. on 9/11/01. I can only express the small amount of emptiness I felt when I first heard of what happened and what one goes through because of "not knowing." My mom had turned on the t.v. to see the weather report just before I had gone out and apparently she had changed the channel because the next thing I know she is crying "oh my god!". I did not know what was going on so I just poked my head in to see what had upset my mother and I found her crying while the news went on talking about the plane that had just crashed into Tower One. I could not believe what i was seeing. I mean I had never imagined someone would do that. But someone did and as I watched the second plane crashed into Tower Two. Then the news went to the Pentagon and reported that a plane had crashed into it also. That is when I figured that this was a terror attack. I mean no one would attack the Pentagon unless they were a terriost. I just sat down in disbelief while everything was unfolding on t.v. My children came into the room just as plane 93 crashed in Pennsylvania and they asked what was going on. I tried to explain it to them but I had to understand it myself first. And that was one thing I could not understand. Why would someone do this? Then the news went back to the towers and to all the people running away and trying to get there to save people in the towers. I started to cry as I saw people running away and when I saw those people jumping from so high up I thought I was going to die from the pain inside me. No one should have to die and they surely should not have to die that way. When the Towes collapsed all I could do was pray that everyone was o.k. even though I knew deep down that some of them would not be. All I could do was pray and I am not one to pray but I did that day and for days after that. I sat glued to the t.v. all day watching everything that was happening and I cried alot to. Especially when the priest got killed while doing last rites on a fallen firefighter. It broke my heart in so many ways to see all that destruction and murder and for what? Because of a psycho? I hope that he rots in the furtheist realm of hell for what he has done. I hate him and I wish I could watch him die like I am sure he watched our people die. I have thought of that day many times since it happened and my heart hurts for all the people who lost their lives that day and even though I did not know any of them I will always keep them close to my heart just as everyone should and I am sure they do. My children understand what happened now in some ways and they want to say that they are sorry it happened. I will end this by saying that I am happy with the way President Bush is handling things and I am proud of the military. Every time they take someone out I cheer them on and I understand that may be weird but I am an ARMY brat so I have a great deal of respect for the military but I also think they ALL deserve it. When I got to my office, I joined most of my co-workers in the conference room to watch the new coverage on TV. We sat in shocked dismay as the second plane hit, and then later as the towers crumbled and fell. It was unbelieveable. We felt and heard the impact of the plane that hit the Pentagon while we were in the conference room, but didn't know what it was. A co-worker whose wife works at the Pentagon called him on his cell phone to tell him what had happened and that they were evacuating. We then went to the rear side of our building, and could see from the rear windows the smoke arising from the Pentagon. It seemed that the world was coming to an end. An hour later, we were all told to evacuate the Lab and go home. My commute is about 45 minutes long, and all the way home I prayed for myself and my family and all those that had to have been killed or horribly injured in all the attacks and their families. I still can't fathom the misery that the victims families have had to bear, and on the first anniversary of this terrible trauma to our people and our country, I pray again that nothing like this can ever happen here again. My friend and I were writing up a program when the teacher from next door busted in and shouted "A plane has just crashed into the Twin Towers."
