I put on the coffee, grabbed the paper from the day before, and sat down in front of the tv to start my day. gotta have my news. I wasn't prepared for what I was about to see. I have direct tv, and my abc, cbs, nbc and fox, come out of New York. No sooner Had I turned on my TV, there was a news break. Plane hits WTC....I couldn't believe what i was seeing. How could a pilot be so stupid, I asked myself. Like he didn't see them comming! I watched in disbelief, fire comming from what seemd to be about 10 story's. Those poor people. They didn't even know what hit them. All I kept thinking was, that stupid ass pilot. What was he, drunk or something. How do you just slam into a building? i hope they sue the hell out of that airline. Then the unthinkable happened. Another plane, hit the other tower! As i watched the clip, i new this was no accident. My heart felt like it was going to pop right out of my chest. For the first time in my life, i felt scared. How could somethig like this happen. This is the United States of America! Who could be so stupid? I watched in horror as the events unfolded. Seeing people jump to their death. GOD help us! All of those people in those building! I knew there was no way for all of them to get out. Now, my heart was in my throat. I couldn't swallow or nothing. I went into shock... By this time, they were telling us about the people in the planes. How they must of felt, seeing those buildings headed their way. Suddenly, my eyes started to swell, and the tears started flowing. Uncontrolably, i sat and cried. Something I hadn't done since I lost my dad to cancer in 1991. Now, anger was setting in. Kill all of the bastards. Whipe them right off the map. Cowards. Face us like men. I couldn't believe how I was feeling. I have always been a loving person. I didn't know what hate was. Saddly, I do now. Please lord, forgive me. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just relocated to Virgina Beach, VA on September 4, 2001. Exactly one week prior to the bombings. I called my mother. I was afraid that I had awakened her. She told me she was up because a neighbor had just called her to tell her a plane had crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. I told her that was impossible because the World Trade Center was a no fly zone. I turned on the television just in time to see the other plane heading for the other tower. "That's no accident" I told my mother. "That plane is intentionally flying into the tower". Then, the ball of fire. All my mother and I could say was "Oh my God, what is going on?" We watched the news together and then it happened - the towers collapsed! I remember crying so much I had to hang up the telephone. I remember saying over and over again "why, God, why?" Just one week prior to the horror I had lived in New York City. Just one week prior to the horror I had worked in New York City. Why was this happenening? All I could think of was all of those people still in those buildings. Why? I remember the pain was so intense in my chest that I could hardly breathe. Why was this happening? One year to the day later, it still hurts. I still cry. The who has been answered, but still not the why. I pray for the families of the victims of 9-11 everynight. I pray that they remain strong and remember and know that the hearts, prayers and love of all Americans are with them. I have a new found respect for New York's Bravest (the New York City Fire Department). They lost more people than any other rescue squad. I have returned to New York since that day but I cannot go into lower Manhattan. I can't look towards the spot where the Towers used to stand. I can't remember them not being a part of the New York City skyline. After all this time, I still cry. I still hurt. The only good thing that has come out of this tragedy is America has realized that we are all Americans. No matter what our ethnicity, we are all brothers beneath the skin. We have also learned that we are not inpenitrable to attack and we have learned that we are a country that responds to disaster by coming together. In God we trust and united, forever, we stand. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was just getting of a math test (this was my sophomore year at Gonzaga College High School). I heard frantic talking and got to my english class, where i saw the National News showing the two scenes (WTC and the new Pentagon one). I thought it was some sick movie joke or something- it couldn't be real. but when i found out what had happened within a minute or so, I wasn't so shockingly surprised. There had been terrorist warnings all summer long abroad in relation to U.S. military operations. Also, I figure we'd be attacked someday since we're so powerful (people jealous of us) and are involved extensively in the Mid-East and exploitation of third world countries. It was crazy. I looked out my classroom window - I could see the smoke rising up from the Pentagon. It was surreal and sickening. I thought it was armageddon; i had no idea what was going on. I saw the towers collapse on tv, although i didn't witness the 2nd plane's crash into the tower - many of my friends and much of America had seen this. All the phone circuits and internet services were on overload, and the school was on lockdown. we knew a 4th plane was loose, and was probably headed to D.C., perhaps the Capitol (which is a few blocks from Gonzaga),so were freaked. I didn't know what to think. We all felt a huge shake, like some explosion - it was the sonic boom of a fighte jet, but it made us uneasy at that time. (this was about 20 or 30 min. after the Pentagon was hit). I left school early for home with my dad and a few friends. We listened to Tom Brokaw on the radio, talking with witnesses in New York and D.C. - it was so sad. I remember hearing a caller cry on the radio about how he had seen a person in a wheelchair who couldn't make it down the stairs. All I know is I felt a freaky emptiness - like Jesus could hardly help. Of course He all helped us out with the healing as He does. Well this is freakin long, sorry. They not only affected the people of the World Trade buildings and the Pentagon, but people all across the nation. These events changed the lives of all American citizens. The morning of these events, I was sitting in school, along with millions of other children, thinking it was another, ordinary day. However, I was sadly mistaken. The events that were about to take place were in the least bit ordinary. I went to my first period class, just as I always did, and then on to second period. This is where I was about to realize that this day was going down in history. At 9:00 a.m., I was sitting in a chair watching CNN, as our teacher explained to all of us what just happened. We watched the horrific sights of the attacks on the World Trade Center. We were able to watch the first attack that occurred only a few minutes before we entered the classroom. Then, as we were sitting there, we watched the second attack live. I remember the looks on the faces of my friends and classmates. None of us had ever seen anything like it before. We hoped to never see anything like it again. I will never forget the next few sights that I was about to see; they changed my life forever. Sitting home, watching the news, later that night, I saw the most awful sights, which I have seen so far in my life. I hope to never see anything that awful ever again. There were huge explosions, hundreds of people running through the streets of New York City, with blood running down the sides of their faces, trying to escape the falling debris that was flying everywhere. Even though these sights were bad, the sights that were on the news the next day couldn't compare to the previous day. There were thousands of policemen, firemen, and even volunteers off of the streets helping to clean up as much as they could of what was left of the World Trade Buildings. They were pulling bodies out of the wreck that once stood as the tallest and proudest buildings in America. One of the most emotional parts of watching all this was to see policemen and firemen on the streets of New York City, with their hats off, and tears slowly running down their heartbroken faces. You could see the severity of the tragedy in their eyes. The thought of knowing that there were families out there, wondering if their son, daughter, husband, wife, or other family member was one of the unfortunate ones to become a victim of one of the few terrorists attacks on American soil was heartbreaking. These events not only affected the people of New York City, but people all across the globe. The tragic events that occurred this day, will forever be remembered in the hearts of all American citizens. America has changed in many ways since this day. The United States has always been thought of as a land of freedom, opportunity, and a land of security. However, with the events that occurred, American citizens now realize that America is as vulnerable to the enemies of the world, just as other countries of the world are. Since this horrible day, America has changed in many ways. Some for the better and others for the worse. A good thing that came out of these tragedies, if any, would have to be that now, America is not as care free with the safety of its citizens. We all take more precautions now, and this has opened our eyes to the evils of the world. One change for the worse is that since these events citizens of America live in more fear than is necessary. You cannot go about your life living in a box, fearing every part of the world. Fear is a person's biggest enemy, more than any other human or living thing. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I drove to the teacher's conference early in the morning and was listenting to music, so I didn't hear the news. However, during our meetings, they interrupted us to watch the news and tell us all the happenings. All of us were crying and praying at the same time. They gave us a break and we called our loved ones to check on them. I checked with my mom who was at home and she hadn't heard from my sister and her husband who were vacationing in England at the time. We heard from them later that day, and found they would not be returning for awhile since no airplanes flew for a week it seemed. I called all my family quickly and checked to make sure everyone was alright and safe. I was truly blessed to have my family intact after such a horrific event. After the break, they released us to go back to our schools and to be with our students. My 8th graders were nervous and scared and by the end of the day, most had parents come pick them up. It was an intensely emotional time, and today on the one year anniversary, again, it is emotional. To know that so many lost their lives and now families are having to makeup that loss, is tragic. Thank God we live in a nation where we can pray, and we can believe in God. Our nation will be healed as the Church begins to pray and we focus on what is most important! Well I had missed the first plane crash,and was wondering what was going on. I thought why are these people gathering up here, watching this on our t.v. instead of going home watching it on theirs. Well then I saw the second plane crash and I realized what was going on. I knew than that my life would never be the same again. My hearts went out to all those people. It really tore me up inside when it told about all those people on the planes calling on cell phones to their loved ones, telling them bye, that they were fixing to die.There is just not any words that can explain how that affected me. I still think about that. I think about what was going on in those poor peoples minds. You know it had to be so horrifing to know that you are about to die, or lose your loved ones and there is nothing you can do to help them. Everyones lifes was touched by all of this and will never forget this horrible nightmare. The only thing we can all do is help the victims loved ones in any way possible, to try to deal with this. Everyone knows their loved ones has to die sometime or the other, but not a senseless death by the hands of a sick twisted monster like the terroist.We have to live one day at a time, and I just hope through the years to pass, each victims family can get the courage to go on with life and gain strength to keep on fighting so nothing like this happens again. My family members, though at the center of the attack in NY all survived. My friends, though running for their lives, and watching with sickening horror at the events unfolding, lived. I am one of the millions so close to the events of that day, yet so far. I watched with horror at the World Trade Center burning, the Pentegon crumbling in on itself, and the smoke rising from a field. I kept walking back to my desk from the TV and making calls. One to my mother. One to my best friend from high school who worked in NY. One to US Airways to cancel the flight I was supposed to take Friday, September 14. One to my best friend who lived outside of Pittsburg. I didn't see the Towers fall. But I saw the aftermath in the firefighters' faces as they went back in to rescue those they had lost. I didn't think I had a right to grieve. To be angry, and upset and vengeful, yes, but not to grieve. Then I saw two fighter jets patroling the skys over NY and Washington, DC. And a carrier ship was making its way up from Virginia to NY. And it struck me that in an instant, when the first plane was hi-jacked at 8:46 AM that morning, MY world had changed. Our airspace would forever be patroled. We would forever be wary of another attack being carried out on a beautiful, random day for no reason. There would be alerts and warnings and things being done by our Government that we don't even want to know about to protect our borders, our interests, our lives. So I mourned. I still cry when I see the images of the havoc wrought that day. And I grieve, along with those who lost loved ones, for the lives lost, for the innocence lost, and a world changed. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I was in my classroom at P.S. 191 in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. As a NYC Teaching Fellow, I only started teaching the day before, and admired my view from the fourth floor; Queens, the Brooklyn Bridge and a view of downtown including the World trade Center towers. People were entering my room all morning long. At first it was computer technicians, the rest, I didn't know. I thought they were looking at something technical. With a roomful of kindergartners, I first noticed the smoke across my windows. I thought that this was odd and when I looked out the window, and thought, "My God, the Twin Towers are on fire!" I thought I'd best take a photo since this seemed extraordinary and when I focused my view finder, I saw the South Tower collapse in front of my eyes. I rubbed them and thought the smoke was playing tricks with my eyes. At 12:30 when I was scheduled for lunch, the librarian asked if I wanted to have lunch in the library with the other teachers. She said, "We have the television set up." I thought the teachers were watching soap operas during lunch so I thought I'd go out of politeness - just this once. When I saw my first news report, I didn't get it - planes crashing into the WTC? Did the pilot have a heart attack? Why wasn't the plane ditched in the harbor? I was quickly updated on the situation and fortunately was able to contact my family. I didn't know anyone who was lost that day, yet I feel as if I did. But for the rest of my life, what followed will be forever embedded in my memory. I had been at work for about thirty minutes when someone came into my office and asked if we heard what had happened to one of the World Trade Center buildings. The first thing that jumped into my head was a bomb. It had happened before, and I figured it had happened again. I quickly went to the CNN internet site. From that moment on I was glued to my computer screen. Nothing else seemed to matter. At first I thought it was an accident. I had never heard of a commerical airliner used as a terrorist weapon. But as I was watching the news unfold, I saw the second tower being hit. Then I knew it was no accident. My heart was beating fast, and I started to shake. This couldn't be happening. Not in the U.S. One of the first things that came into my mind was Pearl Harbor. I had heard older people talk about Pear Harbor, but because it was before my time, my feelings were at a distance. Now I truly new what the nation was feeling, that fateful December morning, because I was feeling it now. My heart ached for all those people who had died, and more who will have to deal with the loss. Although I was lucky enough not to have any family lost, I still grieved as a citizen of the US. It hit so close to home, as if it was someone from my family. In a way it was. Still this day, anytime I read a story or see pictures of that day, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I have tears in my eyes. The emotions are fresh again. I wonder how long it will take to get over it. Then I realize that I never want to get over, not that I could. I realized that this was history in the making, and all of us are front row witnesses. That someday, way in the future, when all of this seems like a Pear Harbor to other generations, I will be able to share my memories, and tell of the countless heroes who lost and gave their lives on September 11, 2002. Natalie was born on 9/11/01 at 7:13 A.M. By this time, we had a familty memeber bring our 1st daughter, Julia Rose, to the hospital to be with us. Tell us your story: On September 11th for some reason I did not turn on the T.V. that morning as I usually do, so I did not know what was going on. I dropped off my two boys at school and came directly to work. When I got to my desk it was about 8:10a.m. in the morning and my supervisor said that our Boss just called to tell us to put on the T.V. that a plain just hit the Twin Towers. We all went to the back to watch, and decided to put the T.V. up front whare everyone can see. The silence was overwhelming and the shock and screams when the second plain hit was scary, then to find out about the other two plains was just two much for me. Here I was a mother with two sons expecting to have a third and I just held my stomach and cried for how long I don't remember. The thought of my kids being raised at this time and bringing a new life into this world really baught tears to my eyes. I just wanted to go home and hug my kids, husband, and family. My family and I kept in touch throughout the day all just praying and telling each other we loved each other. Thank God our family out in N.Y were all doing fine. Tell us your story: I woke early on September11,2001 because we had an appointment, so I turned on the television and I seen the aftermath of the first plane. I recall thinking how sad and what an accident. Then I watched as the second plane hit and thats when I knew that everything had just changed in America, my children woke and they seen me watching t.v. and that I was upset, they then went and woke up there daddy and few the first part of that morning we watched as the horrors of that day unfolded before our eyes.. I watched my children cry and they asked why? I couldn't answer. I then watched my husband cry as the towers went down. I must say that was very hard, for all of us. I told the children to go on to school, and they did but not without my promise that if anything else bad happened I would come and get them. My youngest made me say "Ilove you" more than twenty times and I did this for her and for myself, I stayed by the t.v. for most of the day just numb and sad, never did I think this would've or even could've happened. The bus driver directing the drill for my bus had told us the Trade Center was bombed. Little did we know, the pentagon, our mighty military headquaters, had also been desolated. One section of the Pentagon and both of the towers that stood so tall crumbled before our nation. I learned the full story when visiting my mother in the hospital. I was mourning for the victims and their families more than anything. Our great nation was struck at the knees and fell, but the will of its people made it stand again, taller than ever. Since the bombing, I have said a prayer for the victims and their families as well as all innocents killed in our bombings. Now more than ever I realized how much our lives are worth and how quickly they can be ripped away from us. Now the ruins of the Trade Center lay desolate, moved not by the machinery assigned to pick it up, but by the compassion our county yielded to all that have died. Every I wake up I am grateful to live. Every breathe is noticed. The food, clothes, roof over my head, and love from my parents is not taked for granted nor will it ever be forgotten. I look at life content with what I have and I have no desire to change it in anyway. Not only should thing be taken from this experience, but people should remember also. We must remember not to let our anger speak for us because recklessness will only cause more pain. We must remember the innocents that died in the four planes. The Trade Center, and the Pentagon, as well as all the innocents people in Afghanistan that were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most of all, we must remember and continue to give and share our experiences so that this day that made history will not be forgotten. All in all, I feel shaken by the tragic events but more importiantly educated and compassionate about this nation; The United States of America. Tell us your story: I was driving to work when I heard on the radio about the first plane hitting the tower....and then the second tower a bit later. The disc jockeys were trying to confirm this...they thought it must be a really bad hoax. Then they confirmed it. I got to work and some had gathered in our conference room to watch the news on the TV in there. We heard about the Pentagon being hit next. We had two co-workers in D.C. working at the Marriott near there who were putting on one of our medical meetings. When we were able to reach them via phone, they said they felt the hotel shake and people were wondering what had happened. Our office closed down at 9am PST that day. We were stunned and saddened and worried about our co-workers at our NY based offices and our co-workers in D.C. On a more personal level I was worried about a close friend who was a police officer in NY at Plaza One. I was not able to get hold of him and took several days before he could get through to let me know what he was going through, but that he was safe. I hope people never forget how precious and fragile life can be....and to make the most of each day and not forget to share the good things with others...share our love and be quick to forgive....listen to one another and share our feelings and be proud that when a crisis hit, we were humane, we gave our prayers and our energy and our money and whatever else that was needed to aide others. I did not lose anyone that day in NY or D.C. or PA., but, that doesn't mean my heart and prayers are not always with those who did.
