I walked out into the hallway and people were rushing to the television inside our Physical Medicine department. The reporters on TV were describing how a plane had rammed itself into the World Trade Center and replaying video of the crash. All of a sudden, my co-workers and I witnessed live video of the second plane hitting the second World Trade Center tower. For the rest of the morning, we watched in horror as the Pentagon was hit, the fourth plane crashing into the ground, the towers collapsing, people covered in debris rushing away from ground zero. It was the most horrible thing I have ever witnessed. I remember my eyes filling up with tears and my throat tightening up. How could someone do such destruction to us using OUR planes to do it? I remember looking at my friends near me...some crying, some in shock with jaws dropped, all devastated. I remember that life is short and precious. United we stand. I am proud to be an American. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was early morning and I was getting my children ready to catch the bus for school. They were almost ready and I turned on the TV so they could watch a few minutes of their favorite cartoon. I remember looking over at the TV while brushing my youngest daughter's hair, and thinking "oh my, a plane went down somewhere." All I could see was a plume of black smoke rising into the air. I instinctively knew that it must be a really bad crash to cause that much black smoke. Then the cameras pulled back and went into focus, and a city came into view, and in the background you could see a Jet turning toward a high building. I stood in total shock as I watched it hit the building. I remember saying "Oh my God!" Then I saw the words at the bottom of the screen they read, "America under Attack." My children asked me what was happening, and I turned to them and with tears in my eyes I told them that the United States was being attacked, and that alot of people were on their way to heaven. I gathered up my composure and sent them out the door, only to call them back to me. I called the school to see if it was open and they said yes, so I drove my kids to school myself, still in a state of shock. I told them I would pick them up after school was out. I must have changed my mind 4 or 5 times that day as I watched the events unfold on TV. I finally picked them up. In the meantime I had called all my family and friends, I needed to hear their voices, to know that they were okay. The tears flowed freely for me that day. At first I was shocked, then stunned, and then angry. By the time I picked up my children I knew we were going to war, that we would seek Justice for the terrible injustice that we had suffered. On the way home from school I did my best to answer my children's questions honestly, while wondering what it would mean to life here in the USA as we had known it. I was outraged that we had educated these terrorists here, so they could turn that knowledge against us. I was concerned and wondering what had happened to our President, was he alive or dead. My family all rallied around the children and each other. That night I cried while I did the nightly prayers with my children and I added a special prayer for our President, the World Leaders, the families who had lost someone, the Rescue Workers, and our Military. It was the first time I had ever watched the World stop, and it was the first time I'd ever heard of all the planes being grounded at once. That night I was glad I could hear the military jets as they flew overhead here, I knew that they were watching out for us. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My supervisor came in that morning saying that she heard on the radio on the drive in that a plane hit the World Trade Center. I couldn't believe it, so my coworker walked with me to our cafeteria, and as we stood there watching CNN on the TV, we saw the towers fall on live TV. It was just an unbelievable sight and there were a lot of gasps from the people in the room. We just couldn't believe it! The rest of the day consisted of people going in to watch the TVs and/or listening to news radio to find out what was going on. There was so much fear as to what was happenning to our country and how much more was going to happen. With the days that followed, our company took up collections after choosing one of the 9/11 funds, and the company matched it. We also put money that we made on selling patriotic shirts, pins, and mugs towards these funds. We tried to do a blood drive, but the local office was booked solid for several months. It was just an unbelievable amount of support for our country and the people that were involved in these horrific incidents - people we did not know. I was off from my job that day and had not desided what I was going to do for that day. I normally leave my TV on the Today Show from when I wake up around 6:00 a.m. until I turn it off around 8:00 a.m. That morning I kept the Today Show on when Matt Lourdey said that they had a important new break. They went to The world Trade Center where they said a plane had hit the world trade center and smoke was coming from the outside of the building. It was truley unbelieveable and then the Today Show start to talk about it. I was glue to my television . In around a half hour after the first plane hit the world trade center. I was still watching Tv,When the second plane hit the other world trade building. I knew then that this was and attack from someone who doesn't like the United States of America. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11th, I was sitting in Chapel at Western Theological Seminary, totally oblivious to the terror unfolding in New York City. The whole Seminary shared a sense of corporate grief as we learned of the tragedy during our coffee time. It was evident that we were joined in our shock by others around the city, as I walked to lunch in Holland. Every where I looked, groups were clustered all over Hope?s campus and on street corners downtown, sharing their pain and outrage. Every table at "The Good Earth" was abuzz with news of the event. Every table but one. . . You see, September 11th was also the first day of preschool for Anna. Between mouthfuls of cream cheese bagel, and accented by peels of gleeful giggles, she shared with her daddy the wonder of her morning. As he listened attentively, I was overcome by the significance of the gift of love this father was giving his daughter on this ?day of days.? That he could leave his grown-up priorities and worries behind, and be wholly present to his daughter in that moment, was nothing short of moving. Tell us your story: I work for the Secretary of the Army and was standing in our office (which is in the E ring) when the plane impacted the building. The solid wood doors (connecting the office I was standing in to other offices) blew open like feathers from the wall of wind that came ripping through the building, our floor shook and the loud, surround-sounding noise that came flying along with the wind seemed almost deafening. I grabbed my backpack and headed out to the center courtyard where, after just a few short moments, we were directed to move through a corridor leading to South Parking and get away from the building as quickly as possible. After walking over to the Navy Annex, I realized that the part of the building that had been struck was the newly renovated part...a part that almost every day, I would walk through at or about 0900 (to handcarry documents). That morning, I didn't complete the documents I normally handcarry due to the overload of incoming telephone calls. I was there as a part of a team to assimiliate US expatriates working in France with the company that I was working for at the time as an HR Executive. As the meeting was in full force, my assistant entered the room and she looked ashen. I was the facilitator for the meetings and she asked me to step outside. I immediately thought it was something terribly wrong. She told me that a plane had just hit the WTC and it was on CNN. We thought ...an accident..a small plane. We were so wrong.. I returned and broke the meeting and someone brought two televisions in and we were just awestruck that this had happened..in our home country. Here we were, talking about the world being a smaller place now, and that global commerce was the wave of the future and I felt so far from home. I lived in New York for over ten years and lived about 5 minutes from the WTC. Many of those in the room were from New York and were utterly grieve stricken about neighbors, friends and in three cases, relatives ( a sister and a brother and a mother)who worked in the WTC. Then the second Tower was hit and we hadn't even processed the first event and now we were really afraid for our country and its people. Was it war? I thought about Los Angeles, my home and my family, scattered all over the US. We knew one thing for sure, this was no accident and this was really really going to change our lives, our worlds. When the Pentagon was hit, the room was in uproars, many were crying, in disbelief that this was happening while we were so far away. Helplessness, never felt so real. It hit me out of the blue, my brother and sister in law worked at the Pentagon often. They were contractors and I now felt this event right in my own heart. Trying to get lines out proved impossible. Air travel was suspended. We got word from our Paris office that all Americans had to check in at the Embassy. We decided that we would convene and everyone headed to their own corners to go in ..to process. I remember going to a McDonald's in Paris..a little piece of home and definatly ordering a Big Mac..I couldn't eat it..I went to my corporate apartment and just plugged into email..thank God for that. I was able to communicate with my husband-to-be, my family and learned that my brother and sisterinlaw were fine. For over three weeks I was frantically keeping in touch electronically and then via telephone. Still not able to leave. I did not return to the US until October 5th and I went straight to New York. I had to see it for myself. It wouldn't be real until I could see it. I discovered that a dear colleague of mine had died a hero, at Cantor helping her employees get out of there. A true testament to what HR is all about. It affected me deeply, this event. I have now developed a fear of flying. I am someone who has flown in every type of aircraft imaginable and now I completely freak out during an hour flight. 475,000 air miles over a career of 20 years, hopping on planes all over the world. I also have developed a disdain for Middle Eastern men. I know that I shouldn't but everytime I see one, I am afraid they may be a sleeper and its only time. I am so angry at the terrorist behind this. They used our freedoms against us and we will never be the same. I am so angry that we are still suffering losses from this war that followed. I just shut-off the coffee pot as it had been going since 6Am, so coffeed out now it was 8:00am My thoughts went back to the weekend spent in New York with Brothers Steven and John. ( this is hard for me to do today) anyway we had a wonderful time John took us up to his office on the 103rd floor, my stomach was yuk as we entered that elevator we reached John"s office and his view was beautiful the New York harbor and all around it was breathtaking.I remember saying to John,well you always have liked heights as a small child and he was on top of the world. His new job and home now here in the big apple was a dream come true for him.It was so beautiful in New York and I hated having to leave but I was pregnant and was due back in Minnesota for a check-up. I hugged him goodbye and told him I would see him in 2 weeks when the baby was due.Little did Steven nor I realize this was the lastime we would all be together.The phone rang and my heart stopped as I heard my Father say something awful has happened.My Mom was in tears and I couldn't make out what she was saying,Dad broke in an said Jenny we love you but you need to turn the tv on. We suffered a tremendous loss in our community that day...my co-workers 20 year old son was hit by a 18 wheeler while he was crossing the highway on his ATV. He had been home earlier that day, after getting off of work, and had watched the horrific events unfold all day on TV, he told his mother he had to get away from all of this it was getting depressing. He then took off, trying to find a good hunting place for doves, as the season was soon to open, an avid hunter, and fisherman, he looked froward to the fall. As the day approaches of the anniversary of so many deaths, I'm sorry that she too has something in common with so many people from Washington DC to Sommerset County, Pa, and NYC. For years to come each time the media will broadcast the 2nd, 3rd, and 50th Anniversaries of this sad day, she too will remember her loss of a son, that never married, never gave her grandchildren, she never got to say Goodbye. For each of you remember, that tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old alike. Hold your loved one tight, for tomorrow may never come, as it didn't for so many on September 11, 2001. Tell us your story: *9/11 the Day America Changed* Everyone knows exactly what they were doing when famous people like JFK, or Princess Diana died. Well for the United States, everyone remembers what they were doing on september 11, 2001, not the death of a celebrity, but the death of thousounds of innocent americans. I live 20 miles away from DC and it hit our community extremly hard, many of my peers parents work at the Pentagon, and it was such a tragic day. I really didnt think anything of it when the news of the first tower was hit. But right around 11ish my principal comes on the intercom and announces that the pentago had been hit. As I walked down the halls, it was like a ghost town, it was pure silence and all you heard and saw was sadness and fear on all teenagers faces, whether balck, white, brown, purple, or blue. People dialing on their cell phones, frantic becasue they cant't get ahold of their paretns. My Dad is a colonel in the US army and works in Alexandria. I know my heart sunk when I heard about the Pentagon. I immeadiatly got to a phone and called my dads work... busy signal. So I call again...busey. i called home to see if my sister had heard any news. She hasn't been able to get ahole of him either. She picks me up from school early becaue alli wanted to do was be with my family. We went home and were glued to the TV, we watched in AWE as places we saw everyday and have been to, in complete destruction. It was hours until we heard from both my mom, who works at the hospital were the victims of the Pentagon were being shipped to, and my dad. BUt just to held in their arms nad to hear them say- "i love you" has never meant so much. Its days like this that makes me realize the things we take for granted. The way our country reacted was also something i will never forget. So many people wanted to help because so many people were hurt, violated, and touched. Our country came together to get through this horrifying day, and the marks it left in Americans hearts. Everyone came together as one, becasue we all felt the pain, and we all were going through the same feelings. To wake up the next day to flags, everywhere, people collecting food, clothes, colors of, red, white, and blue. September 11th. was only one day, but it will tkae a lifetime to forget. Arriving in Venice, Italy early in the morning of September 11, we learned that my luggage was lost and thought that to be the worst thing that could happen to us. When we got to our hotel, our room was not ready yet, so we decided to walk around Venice. Finally, our room was ready and we had checked in (I still had no luggage). Because the New York Giants football team opened their season on the night of September 10 and my husband, being a big fan, had to miss the game, he turned on CNN to find out the score. That's when we saw that the WTC was on fire. We watched and heard it was a plane that hit one of the towers. We kept watching. We watched the second plane hit. The first thing I tried to do was call my sister, who works on Wall Street, to make sure she was all right and that she was at work and not anywhere near the towers. I was able to get through on the international phone lines. Someone who answered the phones didn't know if she was in the office or not. After that, I was not able to get through to the United States. My husband's brother is a NYC fireman, so naturally, we were worried about him also. A day later, we learned that ALL of our friends and family were safe, and most importantly alive. Italy became a blur for us and we couldn't wait to come home. My story is a good story compared to many people's story. My heart goes out to all the people who don't have good endings to their stories. You are all in my prayers. At the time the first plane hit a friend and myself were on a break from work watching Sky Sports, there was a breaking news flash on the screen so we changed channel to Sky News, and we were transfixed to the screen to see such things happen. We forced the rest of the public house to watch what was unfolding at the time, just then the second plane hit. We couldnt believe it. People who had come into the pub for lunch just stood there in shock. For the rest of the day we just watched the news. It was one of the devasting event since the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. During this attack I was in school in my English Class. The class just finish reading a book and immediately saw our teacher stepping outside to talk one of the teachers. After, she came back inside and turn on the T.V. I thought she was going to show us one of those boring movies but instead it was CNN. I saw a plane crash into a building and the teacher told us what happenend. I saw peaople running, screaming, shouting, and crying. It was one of the horrible things I ever seen and say may God bless those heroes, victims, and the United States. Tell us your story: it started like a normal day at work when a co-worker's husband called with the news. we have no tv's where i work so the only access was the internet and calls from home. i remember saying a little prayer at my desk hoping that eveyone was okay. over the next hours their were rumors that alot of bussiness were being evacuated. that caused a little stir because my employer was questioning letting us go. there were so many rumors going on it was hard to keep them straight. finally they let us go. about four of my co-workers and i walked to our cars. it was so silent. most of the time downtown is a pretty noisy place but not this day .everyone was trying to leave downtown in fear that somthing was going to happen here(hopkins airport is close by) cars were bumper to bumper. i remember it was a pretty hot day for sept. so once we got to the parking lot we sat outside and waited for trafic to let up.(looking back i feel so guilty just sitting outside, at that time i really havent seen or heard anything about the attacks)once i got in the car the radio station was on howard stern who is based in nyc. i wasnt even out of the parking lot when i bursed into tears. listening to the reaction on the radio gave me some confirmation that it really happened. driving home it was still bumper to bumber. i would look in the restaurants and see the sadest faces looking back at me. once i got home i woke up my boyfriend who was sleeping this whole time and i finally saw it for the first time on tv. i will never forget how sad i felt. even today i still have the same reaction everytime i see or read anything about this terrible tradgy. i realize that most of the stories on this website might be about first hand accounts of the attacts. i just wanted to let everyone know that as americans we were all affected and our stories is what our grandchildren will ask us"where were you on sept 11" and even though it is not the most memorable story , its a memory i will never forget. Whenever I saw the events on TV, all I wanted to do was be with my family who all live in the Columbus, Ohio, area. There just was a need to be close to the ones I love, to hug them and to let them know how much I loved them.
