Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was 16 and a junior in highschool. My lab partener and I had just finished cleaning up from disecting a cat, when a teacher ran through the door yelling about somthing or other. I paid no attention but my teacher ran quickly to the television and turned it on. I went on my merry way until one of my friends caught up and explained, i was horrified, i wasn't sure what was going on and that lead to my fear. In my American lit class we sat and watched as smoke billowed from the buildings, reporters were talking loud and the screams of people could be heard in the back ground. I don't think i fully understood the repercusions until the reporter called out the number of people inside those buildings. I wanted to talk to my family, make sure they were all okay and to let them know i loved them, I had an uncle whi travels constently and i feared he might have been on an airplane or that he was in New York. Our principle said that school was going to stay in session and not to panic, but i don't believe that really helped, alot of kids left and went home so that they could be with there families. When i called my dad he and his entire office were all around one small television set. My Dad never watches television so it was just another clue as to how serious the matter was, I went home that afternoon to find both my mom and dad home, i remember crying then because unlike so many other families now i would be able to cry with them all. Like so many others I watched late into the night, I watched the buildings tumble, I watched the look for bodies, and the phone calls from beneath the pile of rubble that would only be cleared away days after they died. I didn't suffer as those who were in the crash did or the families who lost loved ones, theres no way i could. But i did suffer knowing that little kids had one less family member, a wife or husband was now a widow and that people in this world didn't care about that. All they cared about was themselves and what they thought was so holy, how can any one think that god or Allah put us on this earth to kill one another for him? Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was watching the last new. It was around 11pm in Adelaide. I was studying for an exam the next day, I should have been in bed. I wasn't paying attention to the TV at all really, but I heard the presenter say a plane had hit the WTC. I thought it was either a joke or a terrible accident. At no point did it occur to me that it would be anything else. My mum is inlove with NYC. For as long as I can remember she's always wanted to visit that great city. We have a large picture of NYC hanging in pur lounge room above the fireplace. I think it's the Brooklyn Bridge with the WTC in the background. I loved look at it, how big and grand the city was. I myself, wanted to visit the city one day. And there they were on the new report, live from NYC. One of the towers had been hit and I couldn't believe the building in the picture was the same one on fire on my TV screen. What happened next is something I will never forget for as long as I live. We watched as *something* flew from the left of the screen and slammed into the second tower. I didn't know what was going on and some part of me didn't want to know. Your heart catches in your throw when you see something like that. I couldn't move, I don't like I could breathe. My eyes filled with tears and I sank to the floor and watched as history was changed. We watched live on our TV screens the terrorist attacks on America and people say the 21st century is so great. I coud have lived without having to see it for myself. But then I guess maybe it's an important lesson learned for all of us. It was about 1am when my Dad walked into the room and told us that the Pentagon was also hit, and it was then that we knew what was going on. We knew what was happening, and we couldn't believe it. We didn't want to believe it. To us, America is so strong, how could this happen to her? Which brings driving terror, if it could happen to America, could it also happen to us? The first tower collapsed, and my life, the world and history was changed forever. In that moment it was almost as if you could feel the terror the entire world was feeling, it was overwhelming. I didn't sleep that night, I couldn't. My safe little world where these sorts of things don't happen to us, was falling apart. And I say these things do happen to us, because the western world looks up to America. September 11 was actually September 12 in Australia, my sister's 18th Birthday. It's cretainly something she won't soon forget, nor with the rest of the world. It will take time, but the world, and America will overcome this. Tell us your story: As the hours of horror crept by and the images on the television became an series of searing images in my brain and mind, I struggled with what sort of response my country should make to such unthinkable evil. Each hour brought more certainty to me that the entire nature of the American people had been so completely misread and thoroughly misunderstood by whoever was responsible as to have created a mindset in which they thought Americans too weak or pampered and the United States too politically disordered to respond. On September 12, that thought became a poem in my mind about who we are and the depths of the American will to find those responsible and root out this evil at its source, and I wrote out the words. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: At 7:30 a.m., my husband Dave & I and our dog headed to NJ to spend my birthday at the shore. It was so beautiful. As we headed South on the NY Thruway, we noticed an odd occurence. A plane passed by overhead which was unusual since it wasn't a flight path normally. We didn't think anything else however as the plane disappeared from sight. At 8:40 we were driving south on Route 17 in Mahwah NJ - and shortly thereafter saw the Manhattan skyline. As we always did at that point, we commented on how it looked like we were headed toward the Emerald City. Without realizing it - we were seeing the Towers just as the first plane hit but we were too far away to see anything specific. At about 3 minutes to 9, we entered the Barnes & Noble Bookstore on 17. We browsed and had a cup of coffee and made our purchases. By 10:20 we were at New Jersey Institute of Technology - to see our son Justin. He came out of his dorm to greet us and then soon numerous students came pouring out saying that the Towers had been bombed and were collapsing. At first we thought they were being terribly tacky and Justin thought they were engaged in pledge week pranks. I had gone into the building and seen the broadcast of the towers going down on the student lounge T.V. And then - everyone headed toward the parking garage across the street and we followed. From the roof - we watched the smoke and ashe and souls rise from the city across the bay. The campus police had us all leave the roof as no one knew what else would happend and where. No one knew at that point the extent of the destruction. Justin decided to stay at school so Dave & I headed to my parent's house in Aberdeen NJ - Monmouth County. My father, who had planned to go to the city that day never made it. He had planned on taking a late bus - one leaving after 9 a.m. However, once having heard the news, he knew he wouldn't be going in any time soon. We stayed w/them for awhile and I called other family members who lived or worked in the city. One brother was on a business trip although he works a block from the Tower site. I found out later my other brother Joe was at the site almost immediately and worked for a couple of days on rescue/recovery. I wanted to go as my husband and I are both ministers but since it was my birthday - and since he felt we couldn't do anything, Dave insisted we stay in NJ. We went to the shore - had lunch at a small restaurant near Sandy Hook. We could see people who obviously had made their way back from the city - riding on the back of trucks, jackets slung over their shoulders. We could hear people talk about how they hadn't made it to the city for one reason or another that day and what that felt like. We realized we could have just as easily decided we were going to go to NY for the day as to the shore. We spent the next few hours at Sea Bright beach along w/a number of others who were there to pray, meditate, be w/others but alone - all looking north at the continued cloud of horror. On the way home, we stopped to see friends and then we drove back north. The weird thing that finally made it sink in was being waved through the toll booths on the G.S.P. We finally made it home but I don't even remember going to sleep. I do remember us talking about the possibility of me knowing someone who had been hurt or killed since I had grown up in Monmouth County. It turns out that I knew a man who had been on Flight 93. That was heart breaking even though it had been a while since I had seen him. It also turned out that the plane that had passed overhead the day before was the first plane to hit the North Tower. I am writing this now since I can't sleep. I have much to do tomorrow but almost wish I could sleep through it. However, I know as strange as September 11th will seem from now on, it won't be as painful or as difficult as those who lost loved ones. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I awoke to a frantic phone call from a friend of mine. He was me telling that America was being attacked by someone. A plane just hit the World Trade Center, turn on CNN. I turned on the TV and was in a state of total shock. I couldn't believe it when the second plane hit the 2nd tower. Then the pentagon and oh my God they have another? Then the news it was headed for Washington, but it crashed in PA. No one survived. I was immediately on the phone to my friend in Colorado, one of many long distance calls that day. Once I had my 14 year old son ready to go off to school I decided that he was to stay home close to me, where I wanted him, where he would have a history lesson he would never forget! I am not a religious woman, but I am deeply spiritual. My son and I had a prayer circle with another friend of mine that day. We sat in the middle of my living room holding each other, crying, with the door open, the TV blaring and we prayed to God for comfort for our country and guidance for our leaders! Then I got active and called to volunteer my services at our local Red Cross and Blood Bank. I felt better for doing at least a little bit. September 11, 2001 was a day I cried a soul breaking cry. Today, September 11, 2002 I cried a soul breaking cry. But, today I am sad and determined, not terrified... THEY LOST!!! THEY DID NOT BREAK ME OR MY COURAGEOUS SPIRIT. I HOPE THEY DID NOT BREAK YOU! But I just thought they where talking about a movie until I went home and turned on the T.v on every channel there was footage and talks on what had happened. It was kind of weird because my teacher was talking about how we cant take life for granted because we might lose it one day. So her speech that day kind of fitted the situation. So there was my teacher talking when all of a sudden my math teacher came running in my room and she told somethind to my teacher. After my other teacher left our teacher said a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. At that moment I was suprised that something like that could happen. Then like 5 or 10 min. later my principal said over the PA for all the teachers to lock the rooms and for everybody to get in their classrooms. He said we were on "legal lockdown". Then he said that they would call our parents right away. My class didnt know what was going on. I was like the 6th person that they called. For every student that was leaving they had a teacher personally take them down. I was like "whoa, whats going on"?! when i saw my mom. She said there was a bomb on the twin towers. At that time my mom thought it was a bomb but then i told her it was a plane. When she told me that i was like" yeah i know but whats the big deal"? because at the time i still thought it was an accident. After my parents picked me and my sister up we went to the supermarket. I guess that the 2nd plane crashed into the other tower when we were in the supermarket because when i got home all i saw on tv was replays of the 2nd plane hitting the towers. At the time i didnt like really care i dont know why. I was like forget about it and i started to watch BET. But then when i saw when the towers collapsed it caught my attention. Then i got scared because i thought how about if they target small ordinary buildings like mine? But then I learned about the attack and why they did it and i understood it more. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just lost my mother to pancreatic cancer two weeks prior, and was grieving over my lose. I was at work that morning at the pharmaceutical company warehouse that I work at. A friend of mine came walking past me and told me that he saw on television that a plane had flown into the side of the WTC. Well, the first thing that came to my mind was that it must have been some small prop plane, like a radio or tv station would use to spot traffic tie-ups. It was then I made my way over to the television in our break area and saw what had really happened.I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I had cold chills running up and down my spine. I watched in dis-belief as to what had just happened. I tried to rationalize what was going on. Did something happen to the pilot? Did it have some sort of mechanical failure? Maybe someone from the control tower gave them some bad information, and directed them wrong. Then it happened. The second plane came screaming into the picture, and hit the other tower. Who could do something so horible? Who could have the gaul to kill so many innocent people. We all forgot about work that morning. We just sat there in front of the tv in utter disbelief. Watching the towers burn ,and then fall to the ground. Wanting to be able to do something. But not able to do a thing except wipe our tears, console one another, and pray for the people of NY, and the rest of our country. I had never known grief until that day. I can remember seeing the people fall before the television stations decided to stop showing it. Perhaps they decided to stop showing it once they they recognized that what they were seeing was people jumping to their deaths. I remember imagining what it would be like to be the husband of one of those women that worked at the World Trade Center and not knowing if I had just watched her leap to her death, not knowing whether she was safely on the ground far enough away from the tower that just fell or if she had burned or was buried in rubble. Thankfully, I only had to imagine those things because my wife was right there next to me, holding my hand, weeping as the stark realization that our world had forever changed washed over us. We clung to each other, feeling suddenly vulnerable here almost in the middle of the country. We could be hurt here. Maybe they couldn?t get to us directly but they could hurt the ones we loved they could affect the way we went about our daily activities, scaring us into a certain paralysis. The events of 9-11 did scare us. I remember the eerie sensation of hearing a jet in the sky, knowing that all air travel had been grounded and going out to look up at the fighter jets flying over. I told my wife this. I told her I was still scared. I told her I had nightmares. She told me, too, how watching those planes crash into the towers had changed her; how hearing about the personal tragedies and also the tales of courage would change her life forever; how each day would hold infinitely more meaning for her. I don?t remember her saying that each day with me would hold infinitely more meaning. It didn?t matter then. What mattered was that she was there; that I wasn?t on the news recounting my last phone call with her; that I didn?t need to recall the last words she said as she left that morning. Now I distinctly remember her last phone call, her last words to me that she said before she left. I don?t remember the moment when things went wrong. I do remember when she said to me that ?something is just not right in our marriage?. You remember those things that change your life forever. We were on a plane somewhere over the Midwest heading from denver to see her brother in Florida. I could not have been more astonished had I looked out my office window and seen that same plane headed directly for me. After the events of 9-11 people looked back with the power of hindsight and said, ?Well of course this was going to happen. The U.S. has for too long imposed its will on other countries, on the people of the Middle East.? In hindsight, I look back and shouldn?t be astonished that her new world did not include a vision of me, but I still am. Today I watch the memorials of what occurred two years ago, and I remember exactly where I was, who I was with, what I was doing. I remember that imagined agony of not knowing where she was. I don?t know where she is now. I don?t know if she is thinking of me. I don?t know if she looks back on that day and even remembers me there, remembers us hugging and crying together, clinging to each other as if we were all that we had left in this world. It?s a new world now. The events of September 11 will remain in my mind forever. There is no one else I can ever share that experience with. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: We were sitting watching the news on TV and I first thought it was a clip of a movie coming on. I couldn't believe my eyes and ears what was happening in front of me. I was horrified to think that terrorism has come to the United States. My husband was a POW in VietNam 1970-1971 and we both felt violated, to think that terrible people could take the lives of innocent people, whether the ones in the World Trade Center, the firefighters, police officers, or anyone that was there for lifesaving, it is a terrible thing to happen to "our American Families". The plane that crashed at Shanksville, Pa., went over the Westmoreland County Airport in Latrobe, Pa. Our daughter, Charlene Nicely works in the Blue Angels Restaurant. She told me, that evening when I called her, the plane flew over the airport and it was like something was wrong. I thank God for the people who tried to keep the hijackers from trying to crash the plane into the airport. My daughter was very scared of what had happened that day. They are my heros that day for saving our daughters' life and all the people who work there, the airport and Latrobe, Pa. and the surrounding communities. Tell us your story: My co-worker was an avid newsradio listener, so when she came out and said that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center, it seemed odd, but we didn't have too many details. Moments later, she came out and said that another plane had hit the other tower. I knew then that it had to be a terrorist attack, still not knowing that these planes were large airliners, full of innocent passengers. Someone rigged a television to receive at least the local Fox network, and I was able to watch the first tower fall. The reporter on the street seemed so eager to find a dead body - I just couldn't continue to watch. I, too, had a radio at my desk and listened all day and for several days after to the excellent coverage by National Public Radio of the events, the personal stories and what it all came to mean to our country. The company I worked for was foreign owned and had many internationals working there. My friend in the next cubicle was Turkish and it gave me great comfort that he shared the horror and sadness with me. He was there to assure me that these acts were not the work of Islam, but of hate, and hate knows no true religion. For the most part, I watched very little television coverage - I preferred the radio, as I didn't have to be faced with the incredibly disturbing images. I shared emails of photos and poems. I gave blood. I was grateful that I didn't know anyone who died in the tragedies, although I knew and cared about people personally affected by them. I watched the concerts associated with September 11 and cried as they showed the crowd. I cried over the radio stories. I cried over the images and emails. Tears well up even now as I'm writing this, as I think about all that's associated with that terrible day. I have a flag on my car, in the front window of my home, and red, white and blue jewelry to wear, not just for July 4, but for all the other days that we show pride in our country. One of the most poignant things that sticks in my mind was not something that happened in the days immediately following the event, but months later. We see so many signs and bumper sticker saying "God bless the USA." On a chalkboard in a small Mexican restaurant, the American owners had written "God bless the world." Even in the midst of our own tragedy, let us not forget how much of the world grieved with us, how people of many nations were lost on September 11, and how many more than 3000 people are lost during even more senseless acts of violence throughout the world each year. God bless us all, indeed. I know I am - with health, love, a healthy and happy family, the ability to reason and to contribute to this world. I remember only when the second plane flew into the second tower of the world trade center. I remember feeling the pain(of labor) and the abandenment(of the staff) wich led me to feel selfish. In New York everyone was in a panic trying to find loved ones, while I laid in a hospital bed giving birth to my third child. Camron Joseph was born at Sparrow Hospital on September 11,2001 just shortly after 4p.m. I was watching Jane Clayson and Bryant Gumble when a terrified New Yorker called the morning showand told them that there was a plane that flew into one of the towers at the World Trade Center, when I seen the second plane hit the other tower I knew we were being attacked by terrorist. I fely as if I did'nt want to have this baby anymore. I did'nt want to bring him into a world of chaos and war. I did'nt know what was going to happen next, and if anything, where?Our Capitol was just down thw street from the hospital. I kept looking out my window to see if it was still standing. It felt like only seconds had past when the first tower came tumbling down, and then, the other one. After all that the nurses and doctors kept coming in and out of my room. But they were'nt checking on me, they just came to watch the T.V. i finally turned it off while a nurse was still watching it. I did'nt mean to be selfish, but I needed my epidural. The nurse was spending all her time watching T.V instead of calling the anesthesiaolgist. I know it was a tragic day but the world did not stop turning. As American citizins we all had to pull together, especially the health care profession. Thats why I give praise to all the nurses, doctors, surgeons and volunteers who worked together to help the victims and the victims families. Do you know that saying "For every death a life is given?" Needless to say, thousands of babies were born that day. I'm just glad God sent me my precious gift a few days early! This September 11th I will not only be lighting Camron's first birthday candle, but another candle to remember all those who we lost. And my prayers and love go to the families who lost a loved one/ones. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was September 11th, 2001 and I was starting my first day as a 6th grader, king of elementary school. Life was good, we were on top, able to cut in the lunch line, and having extended recesses. On this particular day, we were in class when the principle came on the PA with an address stating that there would be no outside recess for that day. The whole class was upset because it was a beautiful day, and we were looking forward to a game of 4-square. At lunch, rumors were flying around. Kids were being pulled out of school, some were saying the White House had been bombed, others that the president had been shot, no one knew the real story. When we got back to class the TV was on, but as soon as we walked in the room, our teacher turned it off. As the day progressed, our class was slowly declining in numbers, with parents stopping by and picking up there children. Class continued as normal, and at the end of the day, I ran home to find out what was going on. My mom was on the phone, and the TV was on. I waited for my mother to get off the phone, and thats when I found out what was happening. I ran down to where the TV was and watched as the images flew across the screen over and over again. First the North tower, then the South, then the collapse. Over and over it happend. There was then a shot of the soot covering cars, and one car happend to be a company car for where my uncle worked. My mom tried to call my aunt, but the switchboard was overloaded, and we couldnt get through. My mom also remembered that the next door neighbors at our old house both worked there. My dad and sister both came home safe, and we watched the news all night long. The next day, I watched the news before school, at school, and after school. We were finally able to get through that night to find out that my uncle was ok, and that he wasnt schedualed to work in New York on that day, and the neighbors were both ok, but it was a close call. One had her office hit. Luckily, she had had a meeting with her boss moved to the bosses office on the other side of the building because her wall was being reenfourced. I will never forget that day, what happend, and people so close to me that I came so close to losing. Tell us your story: My Mother was visiting (she lives in Georgia) and we were watching the morning news when we saw the second plane hit the second tower. We also saw the collapse of both towers. We held hands and cried. Those poor people. My God. What's going on? Why are the terrorists attacking? We just couldn't believe all those people had died simply because some terrorist had been programmed to commit suicide while killing thousands of people.
