<text> On September 11, 2001 I was on my way to Wolfetrap Park with the rest of my fifth grade class. We reached the parking lot, but just as we were about to step off the bus, my teacher's phone rang. She became confused, and she asked the person on the other end of the line to repeat what he had said. Then, her face blanched, and she turned away from us. She stepped off the bus, and we could hear her begin to cry. After about fifteen minutes, she returned with a face rubbed raw by her tissue. She told the bus driver to return us to the school at once and forbid any further questions.
Upon reaching the classroom, she first closed the door. She whispered that she would be in trouble if the school staff knew she was about to say anything to us. Then, she quietly told us the horrible truth, and told us that her husband worked at the Pentagon, and she didn't know if he was okay. Then, she turned on the television, muted it, and gave us work to "complete." We were to begin writing if anyone came in, but we could watch the coverage when no one else was around.
When class ended, we were told to go straight home and not to say anything to anyone else about what she had said. When I reached the house, I finished the homework she had given us and began to watch the news. I can only remember thinking how I had woken up that morning expecting to have a great time at the park, only to experience the tragedy.
My teacher quit her job and moved away when she found out that her husband had died. Now, when I remember September 11, 2001, I remember her courage and determination to make sure that we all knew everything, and to not show her fear and sadness. On that day, we finally received the message from all those nations who had dealt with similar attacks, and it was this: we cannot be ignorant to our enemies, no matter how far away they are. We must be prepared to steel ourselves and live out our lives no matter what happens.
We will never be able to bury that event for good, but hopefully, in the future, we'll look back at it as time when we were weak, but we were made strong.</text>

<text>I was listening to "LA Law" while writing narrative notes on my clients at the group home I worked at overnights. They had just left for workshop, and I was waiting for my husband to pick me up from work. When he arrived he said, "Turn on the TV!" I said, "What channel?" He said, "Any news channel," so I turned on Fox News Network. We watched Tower 1 burning, and then saw a plane hit Tower 2. He said, "That happened just before I drove up." We watched for a few minutes, then left to go home. I started to pray silently, "For the sake of his sorrowful passion, have mercy on us, and on the whole world." The talk radio station went back to covering a NY station live, and I heard a call go out for all NY firefighters to report to the scene... Then I heard that the Pentagon was hit. I felt like I was living War of the Worlds, and I cried, because my country was under attack. Two other times in my life that I was scared was during the Cuban Missle Crisis in October, 1962, when I lived in Florida, and when President Kennedy was killed and some of us 7th graders thought the Russians would take over.
My husband and I decided to go to Shoney's for breakfast, and just before we got there Tower 2 collapsed. After breakfast we heard on the radio that Tower 1 had collapsed, and that there had been a plane crash in Pennsylvania.

We went home and I went to bed, since I had to work again that night. My sister and my mother both called to see how our daughter and I were. My daughter was active Army in Colorado and I was a Reservist. I told them we hadn't heard anything. My sister said that our Dad had gone to the Post Office and when he heard, he turned around and went home. I said it must have triggered memories of Pearl Harbor...
Since then our daughter put in for duty in Germany and arrived here last October. I was activated and was sent to the same duty station. I arrived here a few hours after the war started in March. I work with people who have been sent from down range to the hospital here.
I lost my Dad (who was sick since Jan.) the day after the POWs were found and released. </text>

<text>I had gone to Las Vegas for a short trip. I was to leave Vegas on the morning of 9/11/2001. The phone rang that morning and it was a call coming from my hometown in Kingsport, TN telling me that a plane had hit the Twin Towers and to turn the T.V. on.

I sat there numb and could not believe my eyes. The horror of what I saw and quickly realizing we were under attack. The desperate feeling of needing to talk to my 3 children back in Tennessee and North Carolina. I finally was able to get an outside line, so I called my daugher in N.C. because my two sons had probably already left for classes. They are both in different colleges.

My daughter was hysterical and at the time I knew nothing about getting out of Nevada or if we would be under more attack and would never get home. I explained how long it took me to get an outside line and the calls were being limited. I had asked her to please let everyone know and to tell her brothers how much I loved them. One of my sons attends college close to a Neucleur Plant, and I was terrified, even a year later, I'm still teffified because I believe they will attack again. Its just a matter of time. Look how long they planned this attack. I told her I would try to call back with more information as I knew it.
On one occasion I was able to get thru to my mother in S.C. and she them relayed information to the rest of the family.
We take so much for granite. All at once, there isn't a way to communicate with your family and you feel so helpless.
It was very difficult getting an outside line, but I must say the Airlines was doing a more than efficient and wonderful job considering what had just happened. There was no way to leave Las Vegas. No rental cars availabe and then you were not able to cross over Hover Dam. Amm Track was offering to help, if you had flown on a major Airlines, but they did not recognize Soutwest as one of them.

I remember going down to the casino to leave the motel, because friends of mine were staying at the other end of the strip. As I walked thru the casino, everything was quite. This was an erie feeling. People standing around the bar watching the news. Everyone was solemn, sad and disbelief in what they were watching.

Security around there tighten up real quick. Las Vegas was light a gohst town. People just walked the street in a daze. At night Vegas looked so different. Many of the lights were turned off, but the billboards were lit with 'GOD BLESS AMERICA' AND THE AMERICAN FLAG on them. The pride for which you felt to be an American was overwhelming!!!!!!!!

After the 3rd day of being stranded there, we all finally rented a car just to get away from the strip. This did us all a world of good. Just to drive out to Red Rock Cannon and be reminded of the beauty of our Country and take a ride to see Lake Meade. How refreshing, but never for a split moment, did we forget what horror was going on in New York. We all cried for everyone that had lost their lives.
At the same time, I was and still am very proud of our President.

It was difficult to leave the T.V. because I wanted to know everything that was going on.

On the evening of the 3rd day when we heard the first airplane in the air, everyone cheered and clapped. I believe that anything to do with the flag or United States was SOLD out completely.

The motel where I was staying was very accomodating, but unfortunately some were not.

The day I was finally able to leave to come home was a mixture of feelings and you were suspicious of everyone!!!
We were all at the airport that morning 5 hours early. There were people already there and then the sun started beaming down as the morning grew longer. The airport was doing all they could to accomondate everyone. They were out there handing out bottle water to everyone and offering assistance to our Senior Citizens. Our baggage was checked and by the time we finally got thru all the security checks we had only 15 minutes before we were to board our plane.
Everyone watched each other! To look in the faces of the pilots and the flight crew when you were boarding the plane, you couldn't help but cry. I have always been thankful for our police departments and fire departments, but nothing like I am today. They have my utmost praise and respect.

I was so humble and thankful to be home again and to hug my children and grandchildren and at the same time felt pain for those who had lost their loved one.

I hope we never FORGET what happend and become to passive again.

      "GOD BLESS AMERICA"

<text>I woke up around 7am as usual to prepare for work. I turned on the Television to Fox 59 as I did every morning and would
listen to the news while I prepared for work. There was a
break in the news to report the first collison into the 1st
World Trade center. After that point I was totally glued to
the television with dis-belief. I don't believe I ever felt
that scared in all my life, as if the whole world had just
caved in. All my thoughts and feelings of ever feeling secure had just ran down the drain. I then fell into a silent self depression of my own, not understanding how this could happen on this wonderful Earth. And how could
this really be happening. Why? I kept thinking to myself. I
had never really listened to much television about some of
the Political stuff that had been going on before, but after that I couldn't get enough radio, television etc.
In my mind I will never truly understand why the whole
entire world cant be just be one big happy family, helping one another etc. To this day I pray for world peace, but until the whole world wants it. it will never happen.

Thank you.

<text>I remember I was sitting at my desk looking outside the skyline from my window, I sit next to the window and it was clear blue sky. I remember I got a CNN news alert via email and this is when I learned of the first plane hitting WTC. I quickly got up and went to turn the TV on in our breakroom, as I did this I saw the second plane hit. AS I watched in horror...in disbelief..all I remember what an eerie feeling that came over me..and my co workers..we could see people falling to their deaths on Live TV..My eyes quickly filled up with tears and emotions....as the news kept going..then we learned of Pentagon and the plane that the heroes saved, that was going to hit the White House. I will never forget 9/11, I will always remember the horrible scenes that flash in front of my eyes on the Television. I appreciate life much more now than I had prior to the 9/11 attacks. God Bless the people that lost their lives and their families. And God Bless the USA. I am so happy and proud to be an American.

            <elementText elementTextId="227532">
<text>On my way to an early-morning meeting, I had a few minutes to spare before catching the PATH commuter train that runs under the Hudson River to the World Trade Center. I took the opportunity to walk to the end of the public pier adjacent to the station to enjoy the view of downtown Manhattan and the cool, pre-dawn quiet. As I often did, I counted the floors down from the Windows on the World restaurant on the 107th floor of the North Tower, and saw that there were lights on in my old office space - I had worked for 14 years on the 103rd floor. The unusually calm surface of the Hudson that morning produced a nearly perfect reflection of the towers, and I regretted not having a camera. It was September 11, 2001.

On the 22nd floor of 7 World Trade Center, we were well into our second hour when we raised our heads at the sound of jet engines, loud and close. A split second later, there was the sound of a crash. ?A plane is down,? I said. It was 8:46 am.

We heard people in the hallway shouting that a plane had hit the Trade Center. As my colleagues went to see what had happened, I called our building?s security desk in the lobby. The woman who answered the phone said that they had not declared an emergency for our building, and recommended we stay in place. I went out to our main corridor to let people know what I?d been told, but many of our staff were leaving the building, especially those who had been in our old offices after the February 1993 bombing. From the looks on their faces, I knew I should see for myself.

But first, I wanted to contact my wife, Carolyn. We had missed each others? phone calls in 1993, and I knew this had only added to her anxiety as she waited to hear from me. So I wanted just to tell her I was OK. I called the American Cancer Society office where she does volunteer work, but nobody had arrived yet. I realized it was before 9 o?clock, so I decided to try again in a few minutes.

Our cafeteria overlooks the World Trade Center Plaza, so I made my way to that side of the building to see what I could. When I arrived, I took a quick look at the Towers and saw the impact zone with its thick, black plume of smoke. I was shocked to see the impact point so high, as I had assumed the crash was an accident involving a plane climbing out of La Guardia airport.

I turned my attention to a co-worker who was very distraught and sobbing. I was eventually able to understand that she had just ridden in to work with a friend who worked on the 107th floor, and she feared for the worst. In a few minutes, she managed to compose herself enough to leave the cafeteria.

I went back to my office to call Carolyn again, but couldn?t get through. I heard a colleague shout from an adjacent office that a second plane had hit the South Tower. I knew at that moment it was a terrorist act. Our chief operating officer made the decision to evacuate the building.

Between dialing Carolyn, a call came in from a colleague aboard a plane that had just taken off from Newark Airport. He had seen the smoke from the Trade Center, and wanted to know what had happened. I told him it was terrorists, and that we were getting out. I left my desk to spread the word to evacuate and to search for stragglers. While I was away from the desk, Carolyn got through ? a repeat of 1993. Our COO told her not to worry, that everyone was OK, and that we were leaving the building.

We were telling the staff to gather at a baseball field in the green space a few blocks north and west of the Trade Center, figuring we?d determine what to do next when we got there. A few of us stayed behind to forward some telephones to our New Jersey office and to check once more for stragglers, and then we left. It was about 9:20 am.

As I exited the building, I looked over my shoulder at the Towers. There was not a cloud in the sky, and every feature of the buildings was visible. The black smoke and orange flames stood out so clearly that they looked artificial, like a movie scene. I remember thinking to myself that I knew I should feel anger, but I just felt numb.

When we got to the ball field, it had already been taken over by dozens of people in FBI and ATF windbreakers. About 100 of our staff gathered. A few critical staff were asked to try to get to our Jersey City office; the rest were asked to go home and stay by the phone. The police on the scene were urging us to ?keep moving north - it?s not safe.?

As we made our way north along West Street, the main thoroughfare on Manhattan?s West Side, we could see a stream of emergency vehicles speeding down from uptown, lights flashing and sirens wailing. It was hard to talk over the din. The fire engines, ambulances and police cars just kept coming, in groups of two and three.

A small group of us had made about half a mile when, backs to the Towers, we heard and felt a rumble. Turning around, I saw a cloud of smoke or dust billow across West Street toward the World Financial Center. I thought it was a bomb blast. It was just after 10 o?clock, and we had just witnessed the collapse of the South Tower.

All the way, I was trying to get through to Carolyn on my cellphone, but connections seemed impossible. On a hunch, I dialed the home number of our company president, who was out of town on business. Surprisingly, I got through to his wife. After telling her that everyone was safely out of the office, she told me, ?The Tower is down, and they?ve hit the Pentagon.? I heard it, but I didn?t comprehend it.

Four of us convinced a limousine driver to bring us up West Street to the midtown area where two of us would try to get a ferry to New Jersey, and two others would head for Penn Station for their homeward-bound Long Island trains. On the way, we chattered about our plans, but nobody said a word about what we had seen.

As my colleague and I waited in the crowd for the ferry, we heard aircraft noise. The entire crowd cringed, very visibly. Then someone said, ?Relax. It?s an F-14 rolling around up there.? I looked, and he was right. The U.S. Navy was on patrol.

After getting on the ferry, I looked back downtown. I kept wishing the smoke would clear so I could see the Towers. I wondered if I was just at a low angle, with the rising smoke just obscuring the buildings. I wasn?t processing the facts I had: the Towers were down, but I couldn?t comprehend it.

It took us nearly two hours to get from the ferry landing in Weehawken to Jersey City by bus and foot. On the way, we stopped at the Hoboken train station to see whether the PATH link to Jersey City was in operation, but no luck. As we walked from the station, we were threading our way through ranks of ambulances from nearby communities, parked and waiting for casualties. I have a vivid recollection of a petite, red-haired woman in hospital scrubs, with a stethoscope draped around her neck. She stood completely still, with a look of pain on her face. Her hands, in bright blue gloves, were extended toward the Trade Center, waiting.

We got to Jersey City about 1 o?clock, to find that the authorities had ordered the evacuation of our building, two blocks from the waterfront and the PATH station. I talked the police officer into letting me in, just to retrieve my car from the garage. I drove three of my colleagues home, and headed home myself. In the car, I was able to reach my parents, and ask them to let Carolyn know that I was alright, and that I would be home soon.

When I did reach home, I spent the rest of the day ordering the company?s financial affairs as best as possible from the kitchen table. I was on the phone with my COO a little after 5 pm. He was in his apartment in Jersey City, and had been watching our building burning for much of the afternoon. We were on the phone together when it collapsed at 5:20 pm. Although I was occupied calling family, friends and co-workers until nearly midnight, my clear recollections of September 11 seem to end at that point.

*		*		*

Four people I knew or had worked with perished at the Trade Center that day. I mourn their loss, and grieve for their families. They were innocent, chance victims of a horrific act. I grieve as well for the heroes of September 11, the firefighters, police and emergency medical workers who responded, and gave their lives in service to others. There are no words.

Having worked in those buildings for 14 years, I caught their spirit. The concept, the idea of the World Trade Center was - and is - much bigger than the buildings themselves. I feel their loss. Not the metal and glass. The idea.

<text>I awoke that morning hearing on the radio some women screaming about an airplane. I instantly remember in 1945 a B-17 slamming into the Empire State Building. I ran downstairs and turned on the TV. I just stood in shock and dropped the remote. My best friend came in to get some breakfest and give me a ride to school. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the TV. After a minute of shock the second plane slammed into the other tower. I just dropped to my knees and couldn't believe what was going on. We watched for about another 20 minutes and got in my friends Jeep and rushed to school. Since my friend and I didn't have a 1st period we were able to watch the attacks. When we got to school very few knew what was going on. I got to class and told everyone what was happening. That whole day all we could do was hear the reports of car bombs, more planes, or planes headed for the west coast. At football practice all we could do was just sit real quiet. No one wanted to talk. An Army helicopter flew over twice and that was the only thing in the sky we saw that day. The next day on wensday our military recruiters were at our high school. About 200 guys from all 4 grades were in a huge line getting info or signing their papers if they were 18.

I am proud to say that my friend and I have decided to enlist in the United States Marine Corp and serve our country in this global war.

GOD BLESS AMERICA</text>

<text>I'm about to go into my senior year at Providence College in RI. A year ago, I couldn't have been more excited to spend the Fall semester of my junior year at American University in DC. As a political science major, I was thrilled at the thought of living, working, and taking classes in our nation's capital. I arrived at the end of August and I couldn't wait to experience everything the city had to offer. On September 5th, I took a nightime tour of the city with my boyfriend, and we made a list of all the things we wanted to to together during our semester there. I remember saying that I never wanted to walk by the Capitol Building and look at it as though it were a regular building. I promised myself that every time I walked by the Capitol or another monument, I would look at it with the reverence it deserved.
September 11 was the day my professor had scheduled as our "Day on Capitol Hill." The morning would begin with an optional tour of the Capitol, then we were to attend a hearing and writing a reflective essay on the Congressional process. I woke up that morning and considered not going on the tour. After all, we had to be there at 7am, and I had taken a tour of the Capitol before, and I really could have used the extra couple of hours of sleep before I had to go to a hearing. But then I felt kind of ridiculous, 2 weeks into my semester and already I'm considering missing out on things. So I got myself out of bed and down to the Capitol, where my professor and about 5 other students were waiting.
While we were waiting in line, one of the security guards was on his cell phone and was saying something about a plane hitting the World Trade Center. Not being near a TV, we all assumed it was a single-engine plane and just a horrible accident. Then, a few minutes later, he got another call on his cell phone that a second plane hit. My professor thought about terrorism and told us that she would understand if we didn't want to go into the building. I thought, "Not go in? That's silly. The Capitol is probably one of the safest places to be." My professor left a few minutes later. At 9am, our tour began, and my only thought was that after the tour, I wanted to get to a TV to find out what was going on in New York. We walked through the Rotunda and into the Statue Room, and the tour guide was going along with her tour. There was a lot of movement going on, members were being rushed out, I remember seeing Capitol Police rush out Speaker of the House Denny Hastert. A classmate of mine overheard someone say something about an explosion at the Pentagon. That's when the 6 of us started to think maybe we should leave. All of a sudden, a woman running behind us screamed, "Everybody out of the building." And I just started running. I don't remember exactly the route I took to get out. I have to credit the Capitol Police for giving us excellent directions. For the first time in my life, I thought I was going to die. I remember saying those words out loud..."I'm going to die." I was just waiting, running to try to get out, and waiting for the bomb to go off. I didn't stop running until I got out of the building and onto the Capitol lawn. At that point I turned around, and just started crying. I felt confused, betrayed, and really, really scared. I looked over to my left and saw black smoke. I didn't realize then that it was from the Pentagon. I met up with the other girls from my classes and we stayed together all day long until we could get back to our dorm. We all got each other through that day. It was impossible to get a phone line out of DC, so it took a while for me to reach my family and friends.
I felt betrayed by DC immediately afterwards. I finished out my semester, although I was scared for a long time. I would constantly look up in the sky at the planes going by and I would envision them crashing into everything from other buildings, to my dorm room window. I recevied tremendous support from my family and especially my boyfriend. Without them, I would have come home.
A few weeks after Sept 11, I remember reading that the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania was probably headed for the Capitol. I felt numb, and I felt incredibly lucky. If that plane was intended for the Capitol that day, then I owe my life to the passengers on that plane.
I will live with the after effects of Septemeber 11 for the rest of my life. It has made me into the person that I am today. I still look up into the sky a lot, although I'm not as scared anymore. I watch the news constantly to be aware of any alerts. And I feel that I'm a stronger person for having been so close to everything that happened that day. I haven't yet taken a tour of the Capitol. I know that is the only way I can truly have any closure to my experience. But in all honestly, I'm just not ready to go back in there yet. I can finally look at that building without thinking of that day. And I am finally impressed by the sight of the Capitol again. And I love DC again! I am confident that someday I will take another tour of the Capitol...and I will finish the tour!</text>

<text>My brother, Danny Pesce, 34 years of age, worked at Cantor Fitzgerald and was on the 105th floor on the morning of September 11, 2001.

Danny phoned me the minute he heard an explosion. My name is Angela Frunzi and I was at home at the time of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Danny phoned me at exactly 8:47 a.m. and said, "Ange, it's me, put the television on, something just exploded on my floor."

I had channel 4 on as my usual morning routine and there was nothing there. As I am on the phone with Danny I switch to channel 5 and there was Dan's building on the screen with what appeared to be the outline of an airplane in Tower 1. I said, Dan, it looks like a plane hit your building. Danny screams to his coworkers, "A plane hit us!" I heard the panic in his voice and said, ok ok, this can't be, this had to be an accident. Dan, I'll call you right back.

I hung up the phone and called my husband who is a detective in Brooklyn. He had no clue what was going on, but said, I'm going to make my way downtown Manhattan and get your brother out! I said, ok, please get him out of there, it looks bad!

I automatically phoned Danny back and he picked up in a second and said, Hello! I said, Dan, please get the hell out of there. I see, smoke and flames coming out of your building. You need to get out! He said, yeah, we are starting to get the smoke in here now. I then told him, to put a wet rag over his mouth and get out! He said, ok! and left the phone receiver off the hook.

I heard other voices trying to figure out what to do. No screamning, but you could hear some panic. Danny was calm the whole time. I could hear Danny's voice the clearest but couldn't make out what he was saying, and I just hung onto the receiver as Danny and the other voices got further away. I felt such a panic come over me and just began screaming into the receiver, "Danny! Danny! Danny! Danny! Danny!" and eventually hung up. I wanted to say I loved him, I just felt so helpless. I couldn't save him. I knew the situation was bad. I knew I wasn't going to see him again.

I just stood frozen watching the next plane hit the second tower. I said to myself, Oh My God, they (the terrorists) are trying to kill us. We are all going to die! I then phoned my husband on his cell phone, he was already by the Battery Tunnel and was stopped. All traffic came to an abrupt halt into Manhattan. I began screaming, do not go any further. Come home, it is the terrorists! They are killing us all! Come home now, I need you home now. I can't lose you too! My husband then headed back to his office, feeling just as helpless as I was.

My mom then phoned me and said her program was interrupted with the horror at the World Trade Center. She asked me, "isn't that your brother's building?" I said, yes, ma, I just spoke to Dan, he should be making his way out now. I'll be right over!

We all looked at the television in horror. Me, my mom, my dad, and my 2 year old son. Thank God the baby was too young to understand what was happening to us at that time. We were ok for a while, thinking Danny was making his way down the whole time. But when Tower 2 collapsed that is when we just collapsed onto the couch. So helpless. What a horror! We couldn't believe our eyes! Life has been torture since that day. We will never be the same without my brother Danny.

<text>I got the news when my wife called. She said a plane had just hit the WTC buildings. She didn't know what kind of plane; she thought it was a small one. She was watching TV as we talked. From the silence I heard, " Oh dear Lord, another plane just hit the other tower." We scrambled at work to get a TV set up to see what was happening. As we did, I remembered the day the Challenger exploded. I was at home and my wife was at work. Our roles were reversed, but the feelings were the same. Outrage, shock. It was clear that day (9/11); as it is today that terrorism had struck at our country.

Within what seemed to be only minutes, fighter jets from Ellington Air Force base broke the silence. At the time we didn't know where they were going, but we knew why. Jets fly from Ellington all the time. Usually for practice or carrying Astronauts from NASA. Not this time. As we found out later, they were heading to Air Force One. As I watched the planes, I remembered the day the war started in Iraq. I did not feel fear. I felt Pride. Our boys were going out to protect us...again.

Driving home that night and in to work the next morning was very strange. Nothing commercial was flying in a crystal blue sky. I live north of Bush Intercontinental Airport and drive below the flight paths. Usually you cannot count the planes coming from and going to Bush. Jets from Ellington were still taking off and landing, flying C.A.P.'s over the Gulf. Protecting us. For those of you that didn't actually get to see the jets, I will tell you that it was very comforting seeing that. Whether you are a supporter of the Armed services or not (and I guess everyone was on 9/11), knowing they were ready to do their job if asked, was a great feeling.

Looking back now, reflecting on the actions of the fire and police folks in New York make me wonder where these people get their courage. I was asked in a Bible study class once that if I came upon a building on fire and on going in I would lose my life but save 2 people, would I go into the fire. After thinking about it, I said no...Not for strangers. The fire/police folks that lost their lives have been called heroes for making the ultimate sacrifice. I submit that anyone that walked into those building, whether they came out alive or not, are heroes. They didn't stop to think about it. They didn't say, "Well this is my job." They didn't say, "I'm glad I am getting paid for this." They didn't check to see if anyone else was coming with them. They put on their coats and hats and they went to work. They were men, they were women. They were black, white, Asian, Hispanic... of Italian, German, Polish, Irish... decent. They were tall, short, thin, fat... blonde, brown, red head, bald. They were all that make America what it is...they were Americans. As we continue the fight against terrorism, the actions of these hero's should serve to warn those that would harm us.

A year later, as the political backstabbing, maneuvering and bipartisan finger pointing continue, I know the average American stands united in their feelings toward the cowardly attackers and those who support them.

To paraphrase Leonard Pitts Jr of the Miami Herald:

"As Americans we have wept, as Americans we have mourned, and as Americans, we will continue to rise in defense of all that we cherish."

Lets hope they get the message.

<text>The morning of 9/11/02 I was home taking care of my twin boys. I had just changed the channel from Fox Five morning news to watch the Disney Channel when my mother calls me to inform me that the Towers were being attacked I thought she was either drunk or telling a bad joke. I quickly changed the channel, my whole world sank. I hung up and called my fiance, he works for the NYPD, I knew he was home but I just wanted to hear his voice. I woke up his entire family and his mother said I'll relay the message. So I did not hear from him for a few hours. I knew my brother university was in Brooklyn but I could have sworn he was in Manhattan. I could not reach him or anyone else, I cried for hour waiting to hear from my brother. He walked home, it took him six hours but he was safe. My fiance came to my apartment and said we have to continue living. I said I couldn't. He forced me out of the house and took me to the park so that the boys could play and get some fresh air. I never realized the city line from the park until that day. He pointed to smoke and asked me if I knew what that was I said no He said that's where the twins were. I cried a riverworth of tears. We came back to my apartment and he told me that he had to go to work I begged him to stay I hide his clothes. He then said to me that he had to get as many parents back with their children. I held on to him as long as I could and then let him go. I didn't hear from him for hours. He then had to work twelve hour tours for weeks. I missed him I rarely saw him but i kept in the back of my mind that many women would never see their loves ever again. I made him leave his undershirts so that I could cover the pillows with them. As silly as that sounds I felt comforted. I felt as though he was with me. I started to let the boys sleep in my bed something I haven't done since they were three months. I slept with the TV on and completely dressed including shoes. I lost 30 pounds from not eating well. I never went outI was totally shell shocked. I was waiting for god only knows what. I prayed out loud hoping that my prayers would be heard and so far they have.
Since then I started to work outside the home but oly took the job because it was near my home. I have only set foot in Manhattan once and that was only because I was with my fiance. I will never go to "visit" WTC site because I feel that it should be respected not gawked at by me. I understand that many others need to do so but I don't. I pray for all those lost and those who survived. Will my fears ever end yes but I know I will always remember September Eleven Two Thousand and One. I will Light my candles say my prayers and always remember.</text>

<text>I was just soke punk kid dragging myself out of bed when it happened. I had overslept and had had to be somewhere but I'd blown it off. If I hadnt, I probably wouldnt have found out as soon as I did. I snagged some Honeycomb and flipped my 14 inch on. The smoking towers shocked me at first, it didnt really register y'know? As soon as i gathered my wits together I alerted my family. They arrived in time to see the first tower collapse on itself. I was horrified to think that people were really DYING. American citizens were actually losing loved ones to a terrorist assault made in hate. Lives were affected, people just like me were hurt, sicerely and deeply hurt. I went to school anyway, not into school at all but just to express all this to my friends, to see what was really going on. From the lack of hysteria I figured most of the student body was oblivoud to what was going on. I alerted the first kid I knew, a bigger punk than i was, and he just scoffed (having not seen for himself) and informed me that the fatcats in Washington deserved it. In that moment I nearly lost faith in america until my concerned girlfriend leapt weeping into my arms so upset by the losses of her country. My history teacher made a day of it letting us know this was a historical event as we watched live coverage. I believed it. I knew that I would tell this story to my children, just like my mother told me of the war at Vietnam and my grampa told me of his service in World War 1. To all those hstorians out there that are supposed to read this, remember the real story and NEVER forget the people who died as victims and heroes.</text>

<text>The first day of 9/11 I was still in bed, because I am a very heavy sleeper. My whole family didn't know anything because we weren't the type of people that listened to the news. My cousins called up really early and told us to watch the news. I was still really sleepy. I had no idea why we had to wakeup so early. My brother turned the tv on, and we were like, its just all news, then all of a sudden there was the twin towers on fire. I was falling asleep just looking at it, but when it got to the part that the people were jumping off the building, I got scared and thought about why they would do that instead of trying to find the way out. The time the first world trade center collapse, I was like it is so unbelievable because it was so beautiful. The time the second tower collapse, I was in shocked that the people in New York would have to deal with that for nearly the past of their lives.
Me and my family were discussing what a great time we had in New York and now it would just be all plain with no towers. I was saying that whoever did that was cruel and was not an accident. Later on, we did find out that it was true. It was terrorists. It just gave me a feeling that what if it had happen here. My mom tried to encourage me that it was not going to happen here, but I was shaking too much to listen to her. All I can say is that one day, hopefully, they will rebuild the twin towers again, even though it won't be the same.</text>

<text>On September 11th, 2001 i was actually skipping school so i was not really aware of what was going on. I was sleeping in my bed untill 11 am and i turned on tv expecting to see sportsscenter but it was talking about what had happened and how the planes crashed. I heard that a plane had crashed into the pentagon and at that time my mom worked there so i was extemely scared. I picked up the phone and called my moms office and i got no answer so the whole time i was just praying to myself hoping that she would be ok. About 30 minutes later she came home because she got off work early and i saw her and it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. I just was feeling really sad and angry thinking how someone could do this but at the same time releaved because my mom and dad were ok.

<text> I was driving to work on that beautiful morning of Sept. 11th. Every day on a particular stretch of road in the Watchung Mountains I could look over and see the skyline of NYC. On that morning I said to myself, "it is so clear and beautiful, I can see the towers perfectly". Right after the 1st plane hit a co-worker got a phone call from her husband saying something hit one of the towers and they thought it was a plane. Then I got a phone call from my Mom, she was crying telling me a plane had crashed into the tower. They she called again about 10 after 9 to tell me another plane had crashed into the other tower. I was keeping my co-workers up to speed as things unfolded. I also phoned my sister who works for the state and kept telling her what was happening. I remember saying to my co-workers "this means war"! Once the Pentagon was hit, our CEO told everyone they could leave if they wanted to. We all felt the need to be with our families. The strange thing is there was no hysteria, no road rage. Everyone was overly polite, people let others cut in line of traffic, everyone was concerned for their neighbor. I personally knew a Port Authority Policeman who was lost. Robert Kaulfers from Kenilworth, NJ. It was and still is a very sad day for our nation. But justice will prevail. Thank God for our Great President!

            <elementText elementTextId="227870">
<text> Well where to start? A day to remember and never to forget. September 11th was a day of sorrow and a day of terror. The faces of people looking for thier loved ones and trying to get out of harms way, will never be forgotten. I know that I was never there to actually see it or hear it, but I remember that day like I was there. I sat in my fiance's parent's house in Florida waiting to go to work when everything happened. I am from Ohio actually- born and raised there-so I had nobody to really contact or connect with when everything happened. I remember it all like it was yesterday. I was sitting on the couch watching the regular talk shows that come on in the morning. We had had men outside working on the cable a couple days earlier. While I was watching Rikki Lake, they had gotten to some good part of the show I had been waiting for when the screen went fuzzy. I thought that the men that were working on the cable were back again. I got up to look out the window so that I could yell at them, but nobody was there. I thought that it was odd. So I sat and waited for the TV to come back on. Then I remember there being pictures of burning buildings and people running. That's all there was, just pictures. No sound was coming from the TV. I was trying to understand what was going on. Maybe I had sat on the remote and muted the TV, but it wasn't. Then came the sound. I still had no idea what buildings they were showing or where they were broadcasting from. It made no sense what-so-ever. I flipped the channel to see what other news channels were showing but they were all showing the same thing. I thought that it had to be something major because I have never seen every single channel on the TV show the same thing before. I got a call from my fiance at work telling me what was going on. He worked at a call center for Sprint. He said that all phone calls had all the sudden stopped. There wasn't a single employee taking a phone call. So he went to his computer and looked up one of the news channels, which gave him all the details that they had had at tha time. He called his family to make sure that they knew what was going on. Being in Florida I couldn't call all of my family up home. I kept thinking about what was going on, trying to let it all soak in. I still couldn't comprehend how something so hideous could happen to so many people. I had to still go to work so I changed and left. Roads were empty. There wasn't a soul in site, which is very unusual down there. That part of Florida is tourist and party central. Every channel on the radio was broadcasting the same thing as I was driving to work. The parking lot was empty when I arrived. I went in to clock in and go to my station. The radio was playing over our loudspeaker in the whole store. All the employees grouped to the front crying while we listened to the President address the nation. I stayed glued to the till I had gotten home where I could watch the TV. Needless to say I did not sleep that night. I watched on the TV as they tried to find people lost in the rubble.
My heart goes out to all that have lost family in this awfull attack. I have lost a parent too. Although I lost my Dad to a heart attack in October of 01' I still know the empty void that can never be filled. With strength and courage we all will surpass this tradgic event. Never forget those who fought bravely, risking thier lives to help others. We need more people like that in this world. Remember what it is to be free. God Bless.</text>

<text>On September 11, I was in my room drying off from my shower. My bother called me from Florida and told me to turn on the television because a plane had hit a World Trade Tower. I immediately turned on the T.V. and saw smoke rising from the building. I was in shock. Being a sophomore in high school meant that I was only thinking about my life and the events around it. That day opened my eyes to the big picture and made me realize things such as that could and did happen. Now I am more aware of the events around the world that are happening. <text>It was a normal day, wake up at 6 in the morning and get ready for another day of my junior year in high school. Everything just seemed normal, nothing was out of the ordinary or did not feel right, and it was just perfect. I got to school and the bell rang, I was sitting in Math class doing some problems, when the inner come buzzed over the school, usually this happened when the office was trying to communicate with the classroom or there was an emergency. My teacher, Ms. Hatcher silenced the class as our principal; Mr. Sites said something that would put us into shock and denial for hours. He said to us ?The World Trade Centers in New York City have been hit, please turn on your televisions and watch the broadcast.? At this point, we were all crying or upset and moving around. Ms. Hatcher turned on the television and watched as the second plane hit, and we all gasped in disbelief that someone would hate us this much to attack our nation?s symbol. The news started another story, there was another plane hijacked at Dulles Airport headed for the Pentagon, this started another catastrophe. I just sat there, not really knowing how to act or what to say, I just sat there in silence, soaking in all the news coverage. This all seemed like a huge mistake, I mean who would hate the world?s super-power. This time just never seemed to end; I remember that for days after it happened we watched the same footage of the crashes, which made it sink in even more. I called my mom to check on her and she was scared, her voice quivering over the line, she wanted me to stay at school. My dad had been at the pentagon that day, but he was leaving right as the plane hit the section he was working on. Maybe something told him to leave, but it was perfect timing. The clock just seemed to tick louder, but when the towers fell, I was not in the room, I heard everyone in the class crying, I saw teachers running about the hallways, I scurried back into the room and saw debris and dust all over the place, people running from the crashed buildings, it was horrific, like a scary movie. I just wondered about the people who did not make it out, what their last thoughts were, who was holding them, what they said to their kids that morning when they left for work, what their husbands or wives did when they heard what was happening, it was all just moving so fast. It was like playing with a flipbook but you could not control how fast you flipped the pages, things were just happening and no one could do anything about it. Then, I was thinking about the men and women who went back into the towers to help people and the people who were trying to warn others, why did they have to be stuck in there when they fell? They were doing something good. For an instant, my heart skipped a beat, and I found myself crying for those people and I could not stop. I did not even know them, but I cried for them, for us. My father called my mom to tell her that I was to come home immediately because he was scared that the hijackers might try something crueler and attack a school or something, so I came home and watched the news with my grandmother. Each time a plane hit I knew she was looking at the terrified stare on my face, I was glued to the television for days after that watching to see if they had found out anything new.
I remember returning back to school a few days later, and the teachers would sit at their desks with their hands folded and just stare at the emotionless looks on our faces. They would always ask, ?Do you all want to talk about what happened?? No one ever answered, we just sat there in silence, and I would have to say those were the times when teachers could get through a lesson without yelling at someone to quiet down. I would sit and wonder some odd things about who had the heart to do this? Who would kill themselves to kill thousands of innocent human beings? Who would be so bold to sit there and try to downsize our pride? I was so angry, but the time I remember the most was a year later.
I was sitting on the edge of my bathtub blow-drying my hair when Hot 99.5 played a song in memory of the men and women who died in the towers and in the pentagon. A little girl was saying a prayer for her father, as I write this now I cannot help but cry; those words the child spoke were so real and so emotional. I cried so hard that day, I went to school and we had a moment of silence in remembrance and I just cannot stop remembering how horrific that day was, I was so fooled by war and acts of violence, I was just a kid.
