I thought to myself that it couldn't be my husband for it hadn't been long since he left for work..I answered the phone and sure enough it was him. He asked me if I had knew which building in Manhattan, NY my father had worked in and I said I didn't know ....I asked him Why? ..He said to turn on the news to find out. I did ..Then I cried cause I knew that my dad was either in those building or close by..So I said to my husband "let me call him and I will get back to you"..It took me atleast 2 hours to reach him because after the planes had hit the phones got screwed up..When I finally did get him on the phone I was relieved. My father had worked 4 blocks from the World Trade Center. I asked him "did you hear what happened?" He said " I heard a loud boom but I don't know what happened." I told him what had happened and very bluntly told him to get the hell out of there and go home. He said that he probably could not get out of NY with what was going on and he would go to his brothers house to stay til morning....I said ok..Please keep in touch ...After that my butt was glued to the couch and my eyes glued to the TV. WE WERE SEATED IN SEAT 6B AND 6A.(AIRLINE WE WERE FLYING IS NOT IMPORTANT) OUR FLIGHT WAS A FAIRLY COMMON FLIGHT WITH NO MORE THAN THE ORDINARY OUT OF PLACE PEOPLE YOU ENCOUNTER ON ANY FLEIGHT. I DID NOTICE HOWEVER, THE THREE MEN IN FRONT OF ME AND MY BOSS, ACTED VERY STRANGE. THEY WOULD ONE AT A TIME GET UP AS SO TO GO TO THE BATHROOM, LOCATED RIGHT BEHIND THE COCK PIT, THEN JUST STAND THERE AND LOOK BACK AT THE PASSANGERS, POSSIBLY 1 TO 2 MINUETS EACH. THE FIRST GENTLEMAN I NOTICED DOING THIS REALLY DID NOT ALARM ME OR EVEN GIVE ME REASON TO GIVE IT A SECOND THOUGHT. WHEN THE SECOND OF THREE OF THEM DID THE SAME THING, I THOUGHT IT WAS WEIRD, BUT I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS CAUSE FOR ALARM. WHEN THE THIRD GENTLEMAN DID THE SAME THING AS THE FIRST TWO DID, THIS IS WHEN I BECAME A LITTLE BIT CONCERNED. IT WAS OBVIOUS TO ME AT THAT THESE THREE MEN WERE STEAKING OUT THIS AIRCRAFT FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER. I COULD THINK OF NO OTHER EXPLINATION. MIND YOU, OF ALL THREE OF THEM THAT WENT UP TO THE BATHROOM JUST BEHIND THE COCKPIT, NONE OF THEM ACTUALLY ENTERED THE BATHROOM. AT THE TIME, IT SEEMED KIND OF STRANGE BUT, I OBVIOUSLY HAD NO REASON TO BELIEVE THE WORLD WAS ABOUT TO BE ATTACKED IN AN ACT OF TERRISOM. It took too long, too short now in retrospect. I watched our principal walk up to the front, and instinctivly I knew that something was wrong, because he only ever speaks if something bad had happened concerning the school, which was almost never. He began by saying something along the lines of, "There are some very angry people in this world..." and he quickly related the events which had transpired about an hour ago. On this anniversary-I feel even worse just seeing what everyone has gone through over this year. Her fourth child will never know his father and his other three children miss him dearly. Tell us your story: I received a call shortly after I arrived at work and the only information I had until I left was through subsequent calls and via the internet. The radio provided detail and the computer provided images but nothing prepared me for actually getting home and seeing what had happened. As I think back, the entire episode seems like an out-of-body experience. Seeing the images over and over didn't make it real to me and even now, almost one year after, I have to think back to make sure that it indeed happen. I flew out of Little Rock National Airport one week afterward and was extremely apprehensive until the plane actually lifted off the runway. We flew into Philadelphia and ended up in New York City on Friday, September 21. I remember standing across in New Jersey and looking at Manhattan, walking toward Ellis Island, which was closed, and everytime something flew overheard, everyone stopped their run, their walk, their bike ride and looked skyward. We spent the entire day in the city but the most haunting image was leaving the city and looking back. The image of the skyline of Manhattan with the smoke still rolling is still with me. That day will be etched in my memory forever. I was doing my morning chores and getting ready to watch Live with Regis and Kelly. It was about 8:55 when I went into the living room with my 9 month old son and put the TV on. The first thing I saw was the first tower with smoke pouring out of it. I hear them say a plane it the building. I thought great that doesn't do much for my fear of flying. Like a lot of people I thought that it was a small plane until I heard a lady on the phone saying that it was a jet and that it looked like the pilot was drunk. She saw it happen from the top of her building. I decided to call my mother and I said "ma, did you see what happened?" "Yeah" she said "what's going on?" I don't know I tell her they said a plane hit the building. We got off the phone and I called my friend to let her know what was going on because she was at work. As I'm on the phone with her I see another explosion and say to her there was an explosion. ( I couldn't see the other building with the angle they had the camera on.) She starte screaming we're being attacked! I call back my mother and we are screaming and crying. My daughter (who was off from school that day due to fleas in her school) comes in and I tell her go back in my room and watch TV. I couldn't call my husband because he is a teacher and I didn't know what was going on there. Anyway, my husband finally calls me to see what is going on and I tell him. I see across the screen for police, firemen, emt's, paramedic's to report to work so I call my mother again because my sister and her fiance (who was already at work) to tell my sister to go to work. My sister answers the phone and is yelling at me (she's a little nasty) that is her day off!!! Can anyone believe that??? Actually she didn't know exactly what was going on. When she found out she went. Anyway I watching the news alone when the first tower fell. I was scared to death!! Through this my husband is stil calling me (when he can get through, the phones were down most of the day) asking where his father is when I realize, my brother!!! He worked for the phone company at that time and was sometimes working right across the street. Now I'm really panicking because I know he is at work and can't get in touch with my mother (the phones again) by this time the second tower has fallen. I'm crying hysterically!! I can't move away from the TV. My husband calls and I told him "They're gone" He says "What do you mean they're gone?" I said "they collapsed the Twin Towers aren't there anymore!" He was just stunned. His school was in lock down and parents were coming to get there kids. He said it was crazy there. He finally came home and we just watched TV all day and all night. Even slept with the TV on. My sister and her fiance had the awful job of picking up debris. When I finally spoke to her she was shell shocked when I asked her if you found anyone she said there is no one to be found. Only body parts. Her fiance was working on a patient at 7 World Trade when the horn sounded and they started screaming for everyone to run. He had to leave the patient there. He said it was the hardest thing he ever had to do. My husband's cousin lost 4 people very close to him. One his best friend and neighbor and one his cousin who was a fireman. Tell us your story: When i first heard that something had happened at all i was in my 3rd period math class, i didn't really know yet exactly what had happened my teacher didn't want to give us information she said may not be true. I found out what was happening and that a plane had flown into the World trade center in my next class. at first it seemed unreal, people were telling me what happened and i didn't believe them i thought they were all joking untill my teacher turned on the T.V. and the first thing i saw was the broadcast of the plane hitting the building and even still it felt like this can't be, this can't be happening to America. I remember some of the students being happy that we were having an early dismisal and there would be no more work but the only thing on my mind at the time was to get in touch with my mother to find out if she heard and to make shure she knew i was ok. When the class let out at 11 AM, there were postings all over the doors saying "Due to Terrorist Attacks, Classes have been cancelled." My friend and I thought it was some joke and we ripped the fliers off of the doors and headed to our next class. There was an eerie fear welling up inside of my body. I stared at the Prudential Building looming above my head, then back at the flier, then back at the building and assumed that a terrorist had attacked downtown Boston. When I got to the Mass. Avenue building, I noticed the doors were plastered with the fliers. Upon entering the building I noticed how quiet and empty it was save for a radio blaring the news on the security guards desk. An aquaintance ran up to me hysterical, in tears, and told me that the World Trade Towers had been bombed and were gone. I was in disbelief. What kind of bomb had it been? Was all of lower Manhattan gone? How many thousands of people must've perished! My hands started trembling. My first thought was to get out of the shadow of our own skyscrapers to my apartment. I quickly left and began to walk to my apartment. The air that morning was absolutely brilliant. A perfect fall day. I stared at the crisp blue sky where every morning I would watch airplanes fly over the city as they took off from Logan Airport. With each breath, the scent of my cologne reinforced that memory. Had I watched the fated planes that morning? All along the street people were on their cell phones and talking about the attacks. Everyone was somber, walking slowly in the usually bustling street. The words terrorism and war coming from these strangers frightened me. The panic on their faces chilled me. I got home and turned on my television and cried at the sight. I frantically tried to call my family in Virginia to tell them that I was ok, but my cell phone was jammed and service on the telephone would come and go. Later in the day we took a drive around the city. F-16s were speeding across the sky and with the sound of each approaching, my heart dropped, my eyes studied the skies and all I could think was that a plane was bound for downtown. I spent most of the remainder of the day staring out of my apartment at the Boston skyline wondering if it would be there in the morning, watching the horrific events on the television over and over. The news flashed terror warnings for the Boston subway and for the Financial District. Several college students in my building were standing at the elevator leaving for home in fear that evening. The following day, each class was spent talking about the attacks. In one small class, two students began to cry and the professor excused them. All I could think of is that it felt like a dream. Later that evening, I joined in a candle light vigil at The Christian Science Plaza. Seeing thousands of stragers standing in silence, praying, crying and fearful has been one of the most moving moments of my life. In the coming days, the city was in fear. It was announced that the terrorists may have had a cell at the Westin Hotel and hundreds of people were crowded in the streets to see what was happening. Police blocked off streets and the already traffic jammed Back Bay became impassable. Looking back on September 11th, 2001, I feel myself and the entire country had an overwhelming feeling of helpless and mourning. I have never been an extremely patriotic person, but on that day I felt connected to each and every person I saw. We had shared in an historic event that will be documented forever. I will never forget the crystal blue skies of that September morning and the feeling that something so terrible could not have happened on such a lovely day. I would have been at the high school teaching, but with the birth of my other son just one month before it allowed for me to be at home on maternity leave. My husband and I prepared for the day as I flipped to watch the morning news programs. I turned to the Today show and the first plan had just hit. Like others, I thought of this as a horrible accident and wondered how a plane could have been that low or off course. Moments later, the second plane hit and I knew that something strange was happening. My husband had to leave for work and I had this sickening feeling that I just couldn't explain. I worried about him, but hoped that our little town would be safe. We talked throughout the day so that he could stay updated. I left the news on all day and just could not believe as one frightening thing happened after another. We went for a walk that evening just to get away from the news and maybe the world for a little while. Shortly after this life changing day, our two and a half year old began waking up at night scared of the airplanes outside his window (we live 5 mins. from the Dayton International Airport). On September 11 I was in the library workroom stamping books. My supervisor Shirley Williams had turn on the t.v. to watch the new. A new special came across the station showing that one of the twin tower had been hit by an airplane. I could not beleive my eyes, about 5 mintues later a second plane hit the other tower, it was like looking at a movie. I could not beleive it, it did not seem real to me. The horror of watching those planes hit the twin towers and knowing that innocent people was on the planes and in the towers. It was like watching death before my eyes. Two telephone worker came running in library shouting "do you have a televison, we heard on the radio that the twins tower had been struck by a airplane." They came into the workroom and saw that we were looking at the news on the t.v. and took a seat to watch with us. All of a sudden the announcer switched to the pentagon and it was on fire, the newman said the another airplane had hit it also. we was at oz at what was going on, why was this happening, who hated america so bad that they would do this. They switched back to the twins tower, and we were watching the t.v. and one of the tower starts to fall,oh my God we all starts to shouting at the same time "look the tower is falling." I was so upset it literally scared me to see this happen I started to praying to God for the people and to watch over all. september 11 is a day I will never forget. needless to say we did not do a lots of work that day. None of them survived due to complications. I was in mourning. The events that took place in New York that day brought me to life. I was able to stop crying for the first time in about a month. The tragedy of 9/11/01 was a bitter-sweet day for me. It was devastating to the world I live in, while on the other hand I was happy to know my children would not have to grow up in a world full of terror and confusion...they were already in a better place. Just the day before, she had not finished writing her transcripts for her secretary job. She had decided that she would finish them in the morning. Had she finished them the day before, she would have been walking through the corridor where the plane hit. There was a guardian angel watching over her that day. I a few days before that had just realized that I was pregnant. I now look back and no longer take things for granted. There are a lot of children out there that are now without a mother or a father. I guess that day I can say that my family was fortunate enough to not have to live without a person we hold so dear to us. I want to say thank you to all those who helped save lives, and to all the brave people who risked their lives for others. That is what our country is about, lending a hand when others are in need. I could not imagine what those families are going through, I just thank god that I am not in their shoes. Tell us your story: I was working at my desk when a fellow employee in our NYC office called and said to turn on the television, that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I rushed to get a television and turned it on to watch with fellow workers in my office. At first we had thought that a small commercial airliner had hit the building. I then thought.... it's such a clear day, how could you make a mistake like that? Then we watched in horror as another jetliner hit the adjacent Tower. We then learned that another plane had hit the Pentagon, and one had crashed in a Pensylvania field. I was shocked. It was unbelievable. I was worried for our fellow workers in Manhattan. I felt for the families that had lost loved ones, and for those families that had lost more than one member. When I saw the first tower disintegrate, and then the next my thoughts went to my infant. I immediately went to pick her up and return home. I no longer felt safe. I still don't even today, the first year anniversary of the disaster. Tell us your story: Shizuoka, Japan September 12, 2001 7:36 am After two very exciting and tiring days of my very first overseas business trip, I woke up thinking about work and decided to call into the office at 5:30 am and asked for Arlan. Deb said he wasn?t there, but Mike and Dave were. Deb said she was thinking of me today and left it at that. I thought that was thoughtful, but I failed to read into her words. I just said thanks and was transferred to Mike. I will never forget the odd feeling of disbelief as Mike calmly and professionally told me that the United States was in the highest state of alert. I had been expecting to discuss my business in Japan and sat with pen in hand, scribbling down some of his words: ?New York Trade Center- both towers gone?Pentagon attacked?No flights to or from the U.S.? I think it hit me at that moment as I realized my country was under attack and I might not be able to get home to my family. Mike continued in an even tone that our corporation would continue to do business, but schools may be closed and employees would be free to stay at home with their children if needed. He firmly instructed me to be careful and be prepared to stay in Japan as long as necessary. I asked him if I should continue with my appointments. I think he said simply go on with business and be safe. I hung up, now shaking as the impact of the situation became real. Without even thinking of what I would say, I knocked on the door of my associate, Shawn. To my surprise, he was already up. He said, ?Can you believe it?? I then learned that he had been up most of the night watching the news. He thought it best to let me sleep and tell me in the morning. I then went back to call Alan. He assured me that all our extended family members in the New York area were okay. He had been in Detroit on business and had attempted to conduct a meeting, but he and his associate, Julie were both pretty shaken up by the events and left early. Alan said that a lot of people were praying for me. He also advised me to go on with my business and show those around me what a strong, brave American woman I am. It would be something that they would always remember. Alan?s words of confidence inspired me to go on and prepare for the day. As it turned out, it truly was my time to be brave. Shawn was running on just a few hours of sleep and needed some prompting to get him moving. He is a sensitive and caring guy, not only concerned for his wife and kids back home, but truly feeling the pain of those affected by the attacks. Being in a foreign country is odd. Being in a foreign country and knowing that your homeland is under siege is such an oddness beyond words?like a bad dream. The weirdest thing is that I have not been uncomfortable in Japan, considering the heat and humidity and torrential downpours of the typhoon. Even now, the discomfort I feel in every inch of my body has nothing to do with my environment. I was really looking forward to telling everyone of my wonderful experiences in Japan, but my stories will pale next to the tragedy in the U.S. Watching the collapsing towers on CNN was at first unreal, like watching a movie, then real and horrible as a terrible and bitter sadness engulfed me. How very strange that on my first trip to Japan I should be thrust into such a situation. My life has changed very much in the year that followed 9/11. I have been unsuccessful in finding a corporate position for the last six months. Jobs are few and far between. I rarely receive responses from my resume. My former associates no longer associate with me. On the positive side, I am enjoying time with my daughter, Brigitta and my husband, Alan. I have been a regular Betty Crocker, cooking and baking like never before, cleaning, organizing and gardening as well. I am returning to my musical roots and have several students in piano and voice. I know God has a special plan for my life and I will continue to look to Him as it unfolds. God bless America. I was playing a practice match with my best friend Keri when the first airplane hit. I was playing on court 1 so I was virtually on 10 ft from the front desk. Keri and I were right on the middle of a point when we heard Carlene (The manger of the Aurora tenns club(ATC)) scream "Oh My God" We were a bit shocked to hear Car scream that loud in the middle of work so we stopped what we were doing just in time to see it on replay. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I worked in Toronto, Canada and was on my way to downtown Toronto to begin my day of elevator inspections at the Air Canada Centre. Enroute I was listening to Howard Stern on the radio when I overheard Howard mention something about a plane hitting the World Trade Centre. At first I was somewhat confused and remember thinking that "Howard has really lost it now" as I thought this was one of his crazy jokes that didn't make any sense to me. When I arrived at the building and went to sign out the keys, it became apparent that this was no joke and that it was very real. The manager of building services and I discussed whether or not today would be appropriate for inspections, and I ended up starting the inspection process, with the understanding that I may be asked to leave at some point. While in the elevator hoistway (shaft) of my second elevator inspection, I was contacted by the manager on my cell phone, who requested that I leave the premises immediately as a second plane had hit the WTC and that downtown Toronto was being evacuated, as a cautious safety measure by the Mayor of Toronto. I thought this was somewhat weird as Toronto was not even in the U.S. and did not seem to me as a target for terrorism, but I complied with the manager's request and left the premises immediately. I remember driving back home from Toronto at approx. 9:40 a.m. thinking that it was strange to experience the traffic "rush" leaving the city at such an early hour. When I arrived home I spent the majority of that day watching the news in disbelief. All I could think of for a long time afterwards was how terrible it was that such a cowardly act as 911 could cause such mayhem and fear around the world; enough to make totally unrelated cities evacuate for fear that they might too experience a terrorist attack. I sat down at me PC and beagn to write and the following lines exploded onto the page. Strangely I felt better I know Bin Laden will never read this but it is my sincere hope he feels the wrath of our spirit and resolve. Enemies Enemies come in all shapes and colors. Some are brave and forthright, warriors fighting for their cause. Some are cowards fighting from behind women and children. Their cause is unjust and vain. It is thought to be a God given right for them to force their ideas on all mankind. They are not brave and are not just. They are misguided individuals who are easily led down the path of total destruction by a charismatic leader who cares only for his control and power over weak men. It is this kind of enemy we, as Americans, face today. One who sought to destroy the American way of life. When the first plane hit the World trade Center, it shook the very foundation of American life. In that instant America lost her innocence. We had not been attacked on our soil for over 50 years. We were blissfully immune to the horrors of terrorism of this magnitude, until September 11, 2001. Reeling from the first attack, we all witnessed a second attack as the 757 bored in on the second tower. As the flames tore through the building, we all realized this was a purposeful attack. One that was meant to destroy the American Spirit and to cripple our economy and our very livelihood. As the day wore on we learned of other attacks and the death toll began to mount. America as a country cried tears of sadness for those lost in this senseless attack and the families whose lives were changed in the blink of an eye. But then, a small voice was heard rising from the ashes. Only a whimper at first, then as the days wore on, it grew louder. USA, USA USA! It grew until it was spilling over the world. It was heard at the Kremlin in Moscow, It was heard at 10 Downey Street in London, but most important it was heard in a Terrorist camp somewhere in the small country of Afghanistan. The world knew that the sleeping Giant had been awakened. The American spirit began to swell to a crescendo that was heard with great welcome all over the world, except where the cowards hide. It was not music to them. It filled them with dread and despair. No longer did they dance in the street and burn old glory. No longer did they cry ? death to America?. They knew at that very instant that their days were numbered. America had vowed to seek them out, no matter where they were hidden and destroy them. The attack on the twin towers, and the other targets had succeeded in destroying the wood, steel and glass. It succeeded in killing Americans, Brits, Indians and many other nationalities. But the cowards forgot one thing. Our American spirit has been tested before. The British tried to stifle our desire for independence but could not. The Japanese tried to destroy it at Pearl Harbor. Hitler tried to crush the free world with his version of supreme government. Each time Americans stood tall and strong to drive the terror of the day out of our American vision of Freedom. We will do the same now. Terrorism will not win. The basics rights our forefathers laid out for us have helped to forge an America with a strong will and spirit that cannot be broken so easily. Our eyes may be blackened, our lips bloodied but our resolve is stronger than ever. Bin Laden, I hope your ready to meet your maker, whoever he is, cause we are coming.
