Tell us your story: I was attending a computer class when the instructor announced that a second plane had hit the twin towers and class was dismissed for the day. I rushed home to retrieve my cell phone to call my daughter and her husband who live and work in Georgetown. I immediately turned on the television and was horrified/mesmerized by the broadcast. In the confusion about what was happening, the newcaster announced that another plane was (he thought) headed for Washington. The agony of trying to reach my family and watching the horror unfold is something I hope to never live through again. It was late afternoon before I heard from my daughter and she and her husband were physically ok. I can't imagine the frustrations and emotions that families have gone through who lost loved ones on 9/11. This event has left emotional scars on everyone's heart and soul. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11, 2001 started as normal as any other day of the week. I had just transfered to the Pentagon about 3 weeks prior to this date and was elated to not only being in the newly renovate wedge but to be able to work in a place that I had only dreamed of working. I was sitting at my desk in the Pentagon (3D450 to be precise) when an Army Colonel told everyone that the World Trade Towers had been hit by planes and to come and watch the tv in his office. After about 5 minutes of watching, one of the Lt. Col made a remark I will never forget, "we may as well paint a large red X on this building because we are next." I went back to my desk to print a copy of a briefing that was due at 11 that morning. Immediately after I hit the print button, I heard the most deafing noise. It sounded like an earthquake combined with a tornado; being from Texas I knew the latter sound. The lights went off and the ceiling tiles began fall. Our computer screens starting to break and then I turned around. There was a massive ball of fire outside of the window and everyone started screaming and running. I fell to the ground, not knowing what to do. One of the Lt. Col picked me up and carried me out of the corridor until we got to the courtyard. There were a lot of injured people lying on the ground. When I looked around, I saw huge black clouds rising out of the offices where I had just come, hundreds of people crying, frantically dialing their cell phones and yelling out people's names. After about 20 min, everyone was rushed through a tunnel and into the South Parking lot where we tried to reconvene with our divisions. It was then that we were informed that another plane was inbound and we needed to move farther away and eventually ended up at Pentagon City Mall. During this entire ordeal, all I could think of were my friends who worked 2 corridors away and where they were at that moment. Since I had not grabbed my purse, I was without a cell phone. Thankfully, several people volunteered to call my family and friends and let them know I was okay. With the phone lines being jammed and the uncertainty of our coworkers and the other plane, we were forced to stay together and not leave until 4 hours later. I quickly ran to a friend's house which was 5 min away and saw his car. I ran into the house and was scanning the room when one of our friends said that he and my best friend had gone back to check the body list for me since they knew where the plane had hit. It was about 30 min later that I saw then running toward the house and I was reunited. I called my parents, who couldn't speak through the tears and told them I was okay and I loved them. I attended the prayer service at the Pentagon on Sept. 14 and did not return to work there. I came to Washington, DC from a small city in Texas to live out my dreams of influencing foreign policy and making a difference in this world. I attended a religious, liberal arts university where the conversations and discussions in class never left the USA and only mentioned in passing about hatred towards our country. When I came here, I never could have imagined that I, in part, would be the object of that hatred and would see firsthand what freedom and patriotism really mean. I have learned more about this country and myself from the events of 9/11 than I ever thought. The months following the attacks are very blurred and vague in my mind, as I never believed they happened. Whenever friends or coworkers would call and ask how I was, I didn't know what to say except that I was okay. It wasn't until the 6th month anniversary that I began to think and feel things concerning that day. The one year anniversary is less than a month away and all of my thoughts circle around that day, mainly sadness and fear of what will happen next. Most importantly, I worry about what it will be like to go back to the Pentagon for the memorial service on September 11, 2002. God Bless America and all we stand for. We will never FORGET! I was informed on the news of the bombing about 1 o'clock that after noon. Radio stations were goping hay wire everyone was afraid and in a panic and so was I. I had never heard of a war before that happened so close to me. I've only heard of horrible things like that happening in the history books. But it was clear this day that this was really happening. Lots of things went through my mind I thought it was the end of the world and this was the way that God had planed us to die. My teachers husband is a fire fighter and she couldn't get in contact with him because the phones for out of state calls were cut. She paniced more then we all felt for her. I didn't know if any of my family was involved in the incident but I felt for the innocent lives taken by these people. It frightned me to think that the people you love could be gone in the blink of an eye. Who gave these terrorist the right to take the lives of people they haven't given life to. No one has the authority to do such horrible things. Now there are babies and children who are alive but are ALONE because their parents are dead. My whole day on September 11th was a catastrophe. People crying, screaming out to God to just take them if they must go this way. I'm seventeen years old and have never seen anything so dramatic before. This was certainly a day I'll never forget September 11th 2001 will br remembered by all I'm sure but for those gone and for those who got hurt and are lost I'm praying for you everyday. My story is of an observer, and of the impact of this event on my self and my family. On 9/11/2001 I was working in One Mertoteck, a high-rise office building in Brooklyn. We were on the 24th floor, and had a clear view of the towers. Our day starts around 7:30 AM, so our entire crew was busy when the first plane hit the towers. My first action was to call my wife in Williamsburg, VA. To assure her that I was not in the towers. At the time her office, the medical center for Williams & Mary College in Williamsburg, they did not have radio or TV. My call was short, I told her that there was a problem in the towers, and that I was not part of it. She informed her fellow workers, and they became part of the nation that felt the pain as they pulled in a TV and watched the rest of the day. When the second plane was seen our hearts stopped, as we watched it hit the second tower. I've been working with computers for over 35 years. After the second plane hit I went back to my desk, looked at the PC, and realized I had no concept of what to do. My balance, my sanity, my being had been shaken. Several of my co-workers left our floor. They could not bear to be in the high-rise at that time. As the day wore on the terrible nature of the tragedy played itself out. We tried to go out to give blood, but were too late, the centers had more folks than they could process. One of our group was scheduled to fly home that morning, he got to the airport, and no further. It took him hours to get back to us, including a three mile walk, as the ground transportation in the part of Brooklyn where we were did not exist. Our apartments were a couple of blooks from our office, walking back we were engulfed by the dust in the air from the towers. It would be a couple of days before any of us were back to full sanity. I spent the next few hours watching the news. I saw the second plane hit the tower as it was happening. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. I mean, how could anyone do this? All those innocent people. It didnt seem real, sometimes it still doesnt. Even a year later its still fresh in everyones mind. I had to go to work that day and do my job. But it was difficult. I just tried to focus on work. I wasnt in NY, I cant imagine what it was like. Tell us your story: Well on one of my only 2 days to sleep in during the week I woke up to my neighbor coming in and was like "get up! get up man! look whats going down!" i like peeked up and was like "waaaaaa?" He flipped onthe TV and it didn't matter what channel popped up, it had this event on. I left JFK on the 10th ... of course arrived in London that next morning 9-11-02. I always watch CNBC at home and did so then as I was unpacking ... Was this a movie ... No way for it was live TV and I saw that second plane fly into the second tower. I sat at the edge of my bed with some unpacked clothes in hand totally in shock, and I sat!... In my mind remembering I had gone to several company meetings at the WTC ... and then my mind went to the people that still worked there. The next though was I was not coming home anytime soon... I stayed in my room and tried to reach my job and my old job where people I knew still work there. It was the third day before I could touch base with anyone ... of course I cried and was in fear of what will be left of NYC. Then the word of the other two crashes came across the news... This could not be happening, I must be in a dream ... but it was true. I resigned myself that I had better think about how long I would have to stay in London. When I did finally left my room and went out people had gather in front of appliance stores and folks were moving in a slow motion(I felt). The apologies came when people heard my American accent. The rest of my visit there was spent in prayer, at a chichi, a Buddhist temple, and at a peaceful dinner at a friends home ... every opportunity with meeting of these friends started and ended in a prayer for all of those that were lost. I finally got home and I could not bear to look to WTC for I still did not want to admit it ... but I did and the tears came again ... and I prayed. All the while I truly wonder why, for what, and how could they do this! Is it so bad to enjoy the freedom, religion, the right to enjoy ourselves in a decent way. Today I listen to each and every name of each person that had died in this sad event. I knew none of them, but then I knew them, I shared in their pain and saddness ... and prayed for their healing... it will come but it will take a long time. I knew my nephew worked there and ran over to his computer terminal to see what building was hit. It was my nephew's and it looked as though it was right below his office which faced the Empire State Building. I called his wife, 26 yrs old. She was hysterical and asked me to pray for him. I told her I would get off the phone in case he was trying to call. He called when the building was bombed years before. But there was no call. All the family was online trying to find out if he was alright. We phone every hospital in the tri-state area, hoping that they had a John Doe that might be him. He never came home. On August 9th, his wife received a visit from the local police. They told her to call the N.Y. Medical Examiner...they had a DNA match. We finally have him back. He leaves behind a wife who was 26 years old at the 9/11 attack and a 7 month old daughter. I feel for all the people who haven't received a call yet about a DNA match. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Suzanne Pinder, and I did not personally lose anyone on this day that I know of but I still feel connected. You see my mon lived in Brooklyn NY at the time and I live in New Jersey. The WORLD TRADE CENTER was our halfway meeting point. We would meet and have lunch in Sabarros and then go shopping and talk. My mom is my best friend and I still picture us there at the time running for our lives. That morning, after the first plane hit, the first person that I called, was my mom. The funny thing is that we were not allowed to use our cell-phones at work, but that went out the window for me and everyone else that day. When I picked up my phone to dial her number, she was already on the phone, I am not sure how that happened but I guessed she felt the same way that I did. She said that she knew that something was wrong and we just started crying after I told her what had happened. My mom lives in Canada so for her to be on the phone at the same time that I was calling her is a miracle. As I said, I did not loose anyone that day but my heart goes out to anyone that did. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 was a horrifying, life changing day for the world and especially for the United States of America. I witnessed this day much differently than other people. That morning I was going about my normal business in the seventh grade at the middle school. At around 10a.m., my grade went outside for bus evacuation. Everyone was seated on the bus, and the bus driver announced that our country and our lives would be drastically changed forever because someone just crashed an airplane into the World Trade Center towers. My classmates and I were in complete shock! It didn't seem like something this unthinkable could happen. At that time I did not know what the World Trade Center towers actually were. My classmates and I wanted to know as much information as possible about what had just happened. My teachers were only allowed to tell us as much information as they were advised to. So for the rest of the day all my classmates and I were wondering what was going on in our country. My math teacher told us that we were witnessing history right then and there. Emotions and thoughts were going through everyone's heads. One of my teachers cell phones rang and it was her son telling her that he was okay. Right then I knew how serious the crash was to our nation. Everyone tried to get their mind off of things and went about their school work for the rest of the day, but it was really hard to focus. Some people were wondering if their families were safe and alive. That was a scary thing to think about for everyone. After school I rushed home and watched TV. Every channel showed what had happened that morning. I couldn't believe my eyes! My first thought was why is this happening? Then the news said they were terrorist attacks and that people had hikkacked the airplanes and flew into the towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Shanksville, Pennyslyvania. My mouth dropped and I couldn't believe anyone would ever do such horrible things. It seemed like it was a bad nightmare, but it was actually happening. The television kept showing the planes crashing into the towers over and over again. Each time I watched, my heart filled with hate. It also showed many people, police, and firefighters running for there lives with smoke, dust, and rubble behind them. I have never seen anything quite like that. It also showed a lot of people shedding tears and praying that loved ones were safe and that they would soon come home. I felt so horrible for the families who lost their innocent loved ones because of mean and selfish act. I saw everything I never thought would be imaginable. After watching television, there were so many thoughts and emotions going through me. I was just so overly shocked, scared, and especially very sad! It seemed like nothing would ever be the same again. After that day our lives were changed forever! My life was personally changed in many ways because of the tradgedy of September 11. I now live life each day as if it were my last, and I don't take anyone or anything for granted, especially my family and friends.Without my family and friends, it would have been very hard for me to get through that terrible time. Grieving, praying, and sharing others thoughts together with them made it a lot easier to heal, not only my heart but their's as well. We all got through it together, but it was hard and took a long time. Now I know that if I'm ever going through a hard time, my family and friends will be there for me and help me through things. I now pay more attention to safety and security has been increased and people are a lot stricter about it than they were in the past. Whenever I have to fly an airplane in the future, I am not going to feel as secure as I did before that day. I also became much more patriotic after that day. I am proud to be an American living in such a strong country. Seeing the flag now standing tall in the air with pride makes me realize all those brave people who risk there lives everyday to fight for our country. There are so many things that should be remembered about 9/11. The most important thing is that we should remember all the innocent people who died on that day. I cannot even express the words I feel for there families. I am very fortunate that I did not loose anyone. All the people who helped rescue the people are my heros. We wil never forget 9/11! We were watching television when the attack happened and we were both devastated and crying. Later, Mother said "God does not have time for me right now, He is busy taking care of all the firemen and policemen who died." She was hospitilized three days later for a minor ailment and again made that statement. On September 17th she passed away on my deceased husband's birthday..he was a police officer and I think he asked God to take the time to bring her to Heaven.. I had a few extra minutes before we had to leave, so I was playing video games. When I turned off the gaming system, it was about 8:30am, central standard time. As soon as I shut off the power on the system, the image of the first tower hit was displayed on the television screen, in all of its horrific destruction. I didn't know what I was watching at first. It was so surreal; I thought that it must have been a movie or some old video archive of some kind. But, then, I realized to my dismay that it was a live news broadcast of the terrible events that had happened only a short time before. I walked around all that day in a sort of shocked daze. I will never forget how that felt. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ that there was only a fraction of the normal crew in those towers and in that part of the Pentagon that day. Tell us your story: Although I live on the outskirts of Shanksville, PA I was at home that morning with my baby boy Dawson who was one at that time. It was a georgeous day and a gentle breeze was blowing outside. My other children were off to school for the morning and I just settled in to watch the TODAY show on television. I can remember watching the interruption of news to tell us about the first plane in the first tower. I called my husband who works at the local state corrections facility and he said that they knew nothing about it there. I then hung up and went back to watching tv when the second plane hit the second towner. That is when I became concerned knowing that something "was not an accident" at that time. I was glued to my tv the whole morning. Suddenly, my house shook. (Around our area it isn't uncommon for a large coal truck to tip over and create the ground to shake hard and that is what I thought it was at first) I then called my husband again and asked him if he thought I should be concerned as I was standing on my front porch speaking to him. I was concerned as we live near the turnpike tunnels on the mountains and wondered if we were entering into some kind of war if I should worry. Then I saw a huge black cloud move very slowly across the air over the distance. I kept thinking that something didn't feel right. "What was this?" Then the tv reported that another plane crashed somewhere near Pittsburgh, PA and I thought it was too coincidental, the black cloud to be anything else but the plane...I just knew. Then a bit later, the report said Shanksville, PA. Still being in my night clothes, I slipped a pair of shorts on, grabbed the baby and a bottle and out the door we went to collect my other children at Shanksville school. My heart was pounding and my mind was over reacting. I was driving irratically on a road that wasn't fit to go over 30 MPH, but these were my kids and this was my town. I was hoping to pull onto main street to see my familiar sites and to see people going about their business as usual. As I pulled onto Main St. life looked okay and as soon as I spotted a neighbor of mine who was picking up a child from daycare, I knew that our school was still intact. When I got to the school, it was a circus. Parents quickly signing out kids for the day till they found out what was happening in our sleep little town. My children were frightened as well, telling me that books fell out of their desk and that a light bulb fell out of a fixture. They knew that a plane crashed but they were very confused as to why so many were scared and pulling children out of school. Teachers did their best to explain the least to children without making them scared. As I went to check on my sister's house along Skyline Road (the road that the plane crashed) with my children, I was surprised not to see emergency workers flooding the area yet. It still seemed quite still except for the debris in her yard. I will never forget that feeling standing there and it became a reality that terror was litterally in our backyards. I feel violated at the notion that someone turned such a beautiful day into such a tragedy. I wish none of us would have to reflect on the days events but I find it hard to feel comfortable to celebrate his birthday on the actual day since when I mention it, people automatically comment on what a day to have been born. It was obviously meant to be and I thank God for him everyday. I also feel sorry for those who lost so much that day.
