Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I came into work as usual on the Staten Island ferry that morning. I usually walked up to the Trade Centers on nice days but for whatever reason, I took the train, a decision that may have saved my life. I was in the cafeteria on the 43rd floor in Tower 1 when I heard and felt a loud explosion. While the building swayed, I looked out the large picture windows facing south and saw debris falling down. I knew that something hit the building and thought that it may have been a helicopter. My first reaction was to head for the elevators but realizing that they would have gone to the lobby I then headed to the stairwell. When I opened the door, it was already filled with people. I started down and except for two women, everyone else was calm. The fact that no one really knew what was going on saved more lives in Tower 1 than anyone will ever know. After going down a couple of floors, I called my wife and told her to watch the news. She called me back a few minutes later and told me that a plane had hit the building. It was not until the 17th floor that I heard a fire alarm. I also smelled smoke at about the same time. At around the 9th floor, we stopped. I called my wife and told her I was almost out. I did not talk to her again until after I was home, around 1PM, all the time her thinking that I was in the tower when it came down. On the 5th or 6th floor there was water coming out from the bottom of the fire door. When I got out of the stairwell, I was on the mezzanine level. I was directed to go across the walkway to the Winter Garden. Looking out into the plaza area was like looking into a car wreck from the inside. By that time the second plane had hit Tower 2 but this was something I as yet did not know about. I ran across the walkway through the Winter garden and out to the marina. It was there that I saw my boss and a number of co-workers. I turned around and saw the damage on Tower 1. I immediately realized that if nothing else the top of the tower was going to come down. I then started to see the bodies of the some of the people who jumped come down. I grabbed my boss and we made our way one block north. We decided to make our way up to City Hall. My brother worked in a building on Broadway and I was worried about him. It was while we were walking that I saw the damage on Tower 2. At first I though it strange that Tower 2 was damaged from the plane that hit Tower 1. Almost immediately I found out what really happened and that it was a terrorist attack. I couldn?t get to my brothers? building so my boss and I separated, I heading down to the ferry terminal and he to Penn Station. While walking downtown I found out about the attack on the Pentagon and about the plane crash in Pennsylvania. The outside area around the ferry terminal was filled with people, most of them talking about what had happened and speculating about what could happen next. At the same time a ferry came in two things happened. The first was a sound must like a very low pitch jet engine which caused large numbers of people to start running and screaming that another building had been hit by a plane. The second was what I can only describe as sleet coming down from the sky. What had happened was that Tower 2 had fallen and that I was getting covered in the debris and smoke from the collapse. Some time later I heard a second sound much like the first. It was Tower 1 coming down. I was able to get onto the next ferry that came in. I was finally able to get someone, my sister-in-law, on my cell-phone. I told her I was OK, found out my brother was OK and asked her to call my parents and my wife. For days afterwards I was a zombie. I found that I would drift into images of what happened. I cared about nothing because I felt nothing. I went down to the Trade Centers site in October last year but I just can?t bring myself to go now that the site has been cleared. The only thing that kept me going those first few days was the hope that survivors would be found. As that hope faded, I came to realize that a part of me also died and could never be recovered. Each day when I wake up I pray that the nightmare will end and all will be as it was even though I know that is something that will never happen. There are certain things I will never forget from that day. The falling bodies. The man I walked with down the stairwell. The fireman walking up the stairs while I was walking down. The look on Ed?s? face sitting in his wheelchair. Ed, along with Abe, who stayed with Ed, Winston, Angela and Cynthia never made it out. The people in there life jackets on the ferry. The gray smoke cloud that hung over the Trade Center site. The man who gave me the tissue to cover my mouth and nose. Even though the towers are gone, I feel that there are still there. I can?t refer to the site the way the news media does, which is heartless. For all time there will always be the World Trade Center with its? two towers. We can never let anybody forget what happened that day because if we do, then it will surely happen again. Tell us your story: I was watching the television listening to the news about the first plane hitting the world trade center and saw the second plane hit. I instantly started to cry and called most of my family members to let them know what had happened, to see how they were and to tell them that I loved them. My one brother was overseas in Ireland and could not return for some time and he was worried about his family too and my other brother was across the river watching the World Trade Center building crumble. I don't think I have ever known him to be speechless. I have tried to contribute and donate but I know that it doesn't even come close to what is needed. I know that this has touched so many lives in so many different ways but I wanted to say that I think of and pray for all those who lost their lives, and to their families, in this horrible disaster. Tell us your story: I remember it well...I was preparing to go to my daughter and sons' school to be the substitute teacher for the Music department. I was in the bathroom and I had our local channel 10 on with the Today show. All of a sudden they were saying that a plane had hit the World Trade Center building. It said something to the fact of a small plane hitting the building, so I remember thinking that that was terrible for those that were in those offices and the person who had flown the [small] plane. I then turned off the T.V. and proceeded to get into my van to drive to work. Only to my amazement, on the way to work it came on the radio that it was a jet that had hit the World Trade Center, and I just gasped, realizing it was a lot worse than what I had thought previously at home. As I got to the school and through the morning, they had televisions going showing the building and then showing the other tower being hit by the other jet. I was six months pregnant at the time and I just kept feeling the sense of knumbness...what was happening to our nation and I was going to be bringing new life into it... When I got to the school, I was aware that the lady I was subbing for was in Washington D.C. with her husband and I, along with other teachers, was VERY concerned about her well being. We didn't know where she was staying or how she was doing. Later that day, we got word that she was staying not far from the Pentagon, and I would be subbing a little longer than intended because no flights out of Washington D.C. were going out or coming in for an undetermined time. I remember the swelling of tears building up every time I would watch the television - hearing that it was considered a terrorist act, and then hearing at another break time of the plane crashing in Pennyslvania. I just continued to wander...what is my future baby in for, along with my other two children already in school. It was sooo sad!!! Tonight, September 11, 2002 - one year later, I hear on my television the song "Prayer" by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli and how I have sung that song before and how I love that song. They are using it for a commemorative commercial for the remembrance of September 11th victims, and it reminds me why I love the song so much...it has such a wonderful meaning! Some of the other students mentioned a plane crash, but I thought it was nothing out of the ordinary. In science class, my teacher explained that there had been terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center Towers in New York City and on the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He told us that the planes that crashed into the buildings were hijacked We all were fairly shocked but did not know how tragic it really was. At soccer practice after school, everyone was talking about it. Still, no one knew exactly what had happened. I remained clueless until I got home that day. My family was sitting with their eyes glued to the television. The news was on. My mom explained the details of what had happened and how thousands of people were killed. The televsion showed actual footage of the two planes crashing into the Twin Towers. Watching this footage brought tears to my eyes, as I thought about how so many people had died. Volunteers were still searching for people, and there was nothing that I could do , at the moment, to help. This thought remained in many American minds for the rest of the day. Certainly September 11, 2001 changed my life. The day made me realize how fortunate we are to be living in this free country. Our country was almost forgetting that we are a strong, free country. The day made us appreciate our liberty and justice and unite as a nation to overcome the tragedy. September 11, 2002, also made me apprecaite my family and friends. The tragic day forced me to be thankful that I had not lost anyone I personally knew, loved, or cared about. September 11, 2001, made people feel less safe. I felt like terrorists might attack again. I felt scared that America might have been planning on going to war. Airports developed more strict security polocies, as did just about everyone else. Everyone grew to be more careful and cautious. In my opinion, many things should be remembered about September 11, 2001. Volunteers, including firemen, who lent a helping hand to find more people, clean up the mess, or help in some way, should surely be remembered. The generosity of these volunteers should remain in our heartsforever. September 11, 2002, brought out behaviors and characteristics in people that made them better human beings. These behaviors and characteristics should continually be remembered. Also, the unity of Americans on that day should be remembered. The tragedies on September 11, 2001, made us unite as a country. They showed us how imporant it is to love our country. We all realized that the only way to get through it was to unite together as one country. Surely our unity should never be forgotten. Tell us your story: September 11th, 2001 was a tragic day for all citizens of the United States, and especially for the victims of the appalling events that encompassed it. The collapsing of the Twin Towers in New York, the partial destruction of the Pentagon in Washington D.C., the plane crash in Pennsylvania; three horrific, terrorist led events that marked a ?date that will live in infamy.? The citizens of the United States will never forget the tragic events that occurred September 11, 2001. In my own mind, it is hard to recall the day of September 11, 2001. I had gone to school, just like any other day; and I had gone to all my classes, just as I would any other day. Yet in-between one of my classes, I had heard rumors that some buildings had been bombed in New York and in D.C. I had not really thought much of it until I had gone to one of my classes towards the end of the day. That was when I found out the rumors I had heard were somewhat true. During that last class, I had found out from a teacher that the famous Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon in D.C. had been destroyed. Immediately, I was overcome with great fear, as I knew that my mom was working in a building that was located very close to the Pentagon. For the rest of the day, until I had gotten home, I was terrified of the thought that my mom might have been injured. However, when I got home, my dad told me that she had just called, and that everything was okay. In spite of this, everything was not okay! A multitude of people were either killed or injured from the terrorist attacks that occurred that day, and all that was going through my mind was, ?What will happen next?? Many thoughts have crossed my mind both before and after the 9/11 attacks. As I previously stated, my initial thoughts and reactions to the event(s) were taken dispassionately, as I was completely ignorant and oblivious of what had really occurred. I did not think that it was that big of a deal. However, when I found out what really happened, and that some of our country?s most treasured/significant edifices were battered down to rubble, I quickly became aware of the situation and was overwhelmed with both hatred and fear; hatred for those who caused the occurrences, and fear that these tragic events were only the beginning to a horrifying war of some sort. The tragic events of the 9/11 attacks will always be remembered in our nation?s history. They affected [and still affect] the citizens of our country. To this very day, many are still trying to recover from the after-effects of the horrifying events that took place that day, as many had lost close friends and family members. Yet, not all things resulting from the 9/11 were negative. A prime exemplification of this is how our nation huddled up together and became united/unified once again; the events encompassing that day seemed to set everyone?s attention on the bigger picture, and cause our country to unite itself. Nevertheless, the citizens of our country will remember the day of September 11, 2001, and the tragic events that embrace that date in infamy, for generations to come. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Two days before the attack, my husband and I had just moved into our new home. The morning of the attack, I had awoken feeling tired from the move, and very excited about our upcoming adventure with unpacking and decorating. That morning at 6:30 PST, I turned on CNN and that was when I learned of the attack. It had just happened. I was in shock and disbelief. I attempted to contact several relatives and friends in New York, but could not get through, the phone lines were jammed. Prior to turning on CNN, I had just taken a pregnancy test, and as I was learning about the attacks, I found out that we were pregnant. You can imagine how I felt at that moment, grief stricken, horrified, and yet so overwhelmed with joy. My husband and I were worried that I might not be able to have a baby, and now I was worried that we might not have an AMERICA for our child to grow up in. On 9-11 my whole world and my small world changed, I am forever grateful to my friends and family, and to those who protect us. I trust that God will see us through these times no matter how horrific, no matter how troublesome, and no matter how tragic. My faith is stronger, and my life has become more blessed and more important to me because of the attacks. I do not take for granted that I live in America, and I remind myself of all the beauty surrounding me and my family. I have learned patience and acceptance, and to be more tolerant of my fellow man. I say a prayer every day for those who gave their lives, for those continuing to serve us, for those faced with the difficult challenge of making decisions, for all those that lost a special person, and for those that lost their lives and have no one to miss them. By the grace of God, I have a beautiful daughter that I get to teach these many things about life, both wonderous and sad. All of the sudden the phone rang and it was my mom. This was very weird for her to call in the morning since she really did not know my schedule and did not like to call just in case she would wake me up. She then told me what was going on and to turn on the television or radio. i finished getting ready for school unsure i fi should even go, but decided that it would probably be better then sitting around at home. i listened to the radio the entire way to school and was pretty much in shock still. i could not believe that this was happening. When i had got to school i remember walking in and there where many students in Bodie hall watching a television to keep them updated. i went to my class where my teacher was very shaken up and she took attendance and then sent us down to a bigger classroom with a television so that we could all watch the news together. while watching the news one of the girls in my class started crying. apparently her mother had worked in one of the twin towers and she was very worried about the safety of her mom. that is when it really began to hit home for me. i went straight home after class to wake up my boyfriend and inform him of everything going on around us. when i was telling him about it he thought that i was joking. he kept saying that there is no way anything like that would happen to our country. we then spent the rest of the afternoon watching the news and trying to get in contact with our friends to see how they where doing. later that night i had to go to work, which i was really not looking forward to. i work in a bar so i figured that it would probably be a pretty depressing night. i was right. many people came into the bar but mainly to have one or two drinks and watch the presidents speech that he was making that night. it is weird to think that some day our kids and grandkids will be reading about this in there history books and i was actually alive to experience it. i have always heard my mom talk about where she was the day of JFK's assissination but i never really thought much about how she lived through a major event of our history. my main fear was that there was going to be a war and that my friends would have to go across seas and fight. i thought that if they where going to attack again that it migh tbe the Sears Tower which would then shake up my life style even more. it would make things so much more of a reality. my heart goes out to all those who lost loved ones during this horrible tragedy. We then went to a store and bought a television so that we could watch what was going on. It was so unbelieveable to see the destruction and to even try to imagine that we were under attack. We were as stunned as the people in New York and our hearts went out immediately to everyone of them. As we watched in dismay, there was not a dry eye in the office. This was so hard to comprehend at first and when the towers started to collapse, we just could not believe that this could be happening. It has been one year today and it seems like only yesterday that this all happened. I stay home with our two year old daughter and as such was still in my robe. Giving in to my daughter's pleas for Elmo, I popped in a tape for her in my bedroom and then sat down in my kitchen to the crossword with NBC's Today show on in the background. The news that there had been an accidental plane crash caught my attention. The fact that it was a crash into a huge highrise seemed odd, being that it is a rather easy object to steer clear of. I sat beside my fireplace with coffee cup in hand and watched with shock at the second plane coming in and exploding. The shock soon turned to horror as it was realized that these crashes were no accident. I tried to get a hold of my husband, needing to connect with something real in my life, to no avail. I called a girlfriend and together we tearfully watched as the fabric of American liberty was being ripped. How could this happen, who could hate this much, were there any more survivors, how would the widows and orphans ever recover? Another looming question - where would they strike next? For the rest of the day, I sat and watched, tended to my daughter, and called friends and family periodically to make sure this was not just on my TV set. It was 3pm before I realized that I was still in my robe. Before bed that night I hugged my daughter and husband extra tight, grateful for the opportunity to have another day with them, an opportunity denied to so many that same night. I could not believe it. i got out my car and ran outside to see the second plane hit the other tower. Tears came to my eyes as i stood there waching in disbelief. My family members worked at the WTC and thanks GOD they were able to come out alive. it is so hard to see that the WTC is no longer there and all those lives were lost on that terrible day. I think 9-11-2001 should be a day to remember how a nation came together in one soul, family, color, religion and one nation. Tell us your story: I can remember it as if it were yesterday, the intersection I was at, the utter suprise the dj on the radio displayed,the second plane had hit. That's when I first heard of it.The United States was under attack and I was alone in my car with just the dj and God. I stopped to call my parents and husband. They were aware of the situation. When I met the students none of the teachers or employees at the museum knew. The whole tour was unnerving for the adults, we didn't tell the 5th graders, they just thought there had been a plane crash. I was so thankful to be with my only child. I found solace, I know so many parents were rushing to get their children all over the US. After the tour I let her proceed on to school and I went to work. We attempted to work, but we were all so stunned not much progress was made. Between the tv's, radios and numb conversation, it was so surreal. I never got over it as long as I was working there. Now, in retrospect, I realize that I went through a state of depression. I cried after the moment of silence at 7:44 Sept. 11,2002. I was practically sobbing by the time I got to work. No I lost no one, I knew not one of those who perished, but through the media I learned of their stories. The horrible loss of all those innocent victims. And the ignorance of those who murdered them, all for what? Terrorists are obviously not aware of the Book of Job or the story of Jabez. Adversity is the foundation for success and power. They can destroy our icons, upset our goverment, but they can never take our freedom from us. They think they can put obstacles in front of us, but we only see them as a challenge. I was reading e-mails and getting organized for the day ahead when I received a frantic call from my husband. He was at home feeding our son when he heard of the first tower being hit on the radio. He ran to see it on the television. When he called he replayed the horror of the first hit and I listened to him scream "Oh my God, a plane just ran into the second tower". My heart sank. I began to cry and shake. What was happening? Were we under attack? Who would do this? I tried to log onto a news website to find out more information but they were all overloaded. There are no televisions that actually get reception in our building. All I could do was wait for my husband to call back with news. I was meeting with another director that morning and we decided to move it over the the Mariott Hotel so we could watch what was happening. Hearing the news was devastating, seeing what happened cannot be described in words. All I wanted to do was get my 10 month old son and hold him and never let go, which is exactly what I did later that morning. Someone used the word "armageddon" when the Pentagon was hit. Never before had I had so much fear for my family and friends. From that day on, I will never neglect my God, my family or my friends. They come before anything else in my life. I take time to smell the roses and I don't take anything for granted. Although I did not lose any family or friends in these tragedies, my life will forever be changed. My thoughts around 9:15 are irretrievable, a million dollars laid before me could not make me remember now what small thoughts where occupying my mind at the moment I focused on the image from my little TV. A reporter on a rooftop, with the building in the distance, over his shoulder. It all came next. Unlike a conventional fire scene, where your perspective is from the ground up, with all the accompanying men and equipment, the beautiful Towers, our Towers that where to be a wonder for the eyes and the ages for generations to come, stood with their wounds high up in the sky, so helpless they looked, in retrospect, they seemed alive, staggered like wounded animals, they're killing them and we can't reach up to help them. When they showed my fellow citizens jumping. Just jumping into death to avoid the fire, I had by then dropped to my knees, fully aware of what I was watching, the reality of it, and prayed to God to make it stop. It got worse. But History will show that the seeds for our victorys to come where sown before the beautiful Towers even collapsed. The moment people started to help others, the fact that hundreds of firefighters and rescue workers had arrived, gone in, and where fighting to get high into the sky to save others is our strength. We have taken the courage shown just minutes after the supposedly wonderful victory over America and congealed it into a pit of the stomach resolve to never let them do this again. How Pyric a victory that left behind the weapon that will destroy them- American courage. I've studied American history since I was a boy. And I've often wondered if past generations where a stronger lot than we, I mean how could men do the things I read about, Iwo Jima, Normandy, Gettysburg. How could Picketts men begin the charge, take the actual steps into the open field, knowing that they were running face first into certain death. Where did they get that courage? Do we have that today? After watching film of the fireman in the lobby of the beautiful Towers willing to charge face first up the stairs I feel an awe that until now has been reserved for the most famous of our Patriots. And that is how they will be remembered, American Patriots who performed their Duty so well that they "stole the thunder" from their attackers before the sun even set that day. Within a day we had learned of the flight over Pennsylvania, and the American courage displayed, by Americans to save other Americans. And we drew strength from this. Let future generations read and wonder how in the days that followed Americans, even with the news that Antrax had been released in our cities, found the courage to function. We went to work, we continued to live and we will now confront our enemies face first. And we will forever be grateful to those brave people who performrd their duty on the darkest hour in American history. I went directly to my closest hospital knowing that they would use me or send me on. I stayed there and we set up triage. We took orders. We understood our orders. We waited....for the injured, burned, the broken. By 2pm, we were told to go home. There were no patients. It was the most empty feeling I ever had. Since that day, I help out with the Red Cross where ever and when ever I can. Sometimes it is scheduling volunteers, sometimes working in the family centers. It is so sad, no matter where it is. All I want to do is bring these people back, bring the towers back, bring the City back. Bring myself back to where I was before 9/11. We will never be the same. We can never forget. Ed had his tv on in his office and it was just past eight thirty am, September 11,2001. As he did some paper work at his desk a news bulletin broke on the screen. A picture of the World Trade Center appeared and one of the towers was on fire. As we watched a second plane hit the other tower. We watched in total disbelief. In the clamor about me I heard that a plane had unintentionally collided with the great structure. I still had no real sense of what was unfolding when my instructor turned off the monitor and began the lesson as he normally would. As I stepped into my fourth period study hall I was still unaware of the gravity of what was occurring. As I entered I saw my teacher and several classmates gazing awestruck at the monitor. In joining them I saw a second plane strike what I recognized as one of the World Trade Center Towers. I listened in terror as the full situation was laid before me by the newscaster. Three separate planes had launched an assault on the trade towers and one upon the pentagon. Mere minutes later I watched in shock as the towers disintegrated without warning. The dust seemed to engulf the whole of New York City and camera shots were a cloud of gray. As the dust settled and the immediate danger had passed a search was already begun for those who had committed the most abominable of acts. I was shocked that this search and anger had begun prior even to grieving for those who perished. Televisions in all remaining classes were tuned to news stations while my classmates and I sat anticipating the next event in the horrific sequence. Little occurred other than the government saying the blame rested on the shoulders of Bin Laden and the governing body of Afghanistan. I returned home to an awestruck family. My father seemed anxious as he consoled my distrait mother. All media outlets enduringly reported the latest developments for several days. Yet eventually this ceased, as did the overbearing nationalism that had been caused by the atrocities. At present all seems to have returned to its typical state. This although comfortable leaves us exposed to more attacks such as those that occurred. It is clear that much must be altered in order to prevent such occurrences in the future. Tell us your story: On the evening September 10th, 2001, I had opened up my laptop and popped in Armageddon DVD starring Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler, and Ben Affleck. I stopped watching the film right after the initial asteroids and meteors had impacted New York City. One of the last things I saw before I shut my laptop off was of a huge meteor blasting a wide, black, smoking hole in the North Tower of the World trade center. My alarm was set to around 6:30. I had to get up to go to work. Instead of the local radio show, I heard Peter Jennings or Tom Brokaw. My first memory of that day was the anchor asking an aviation expert why a plane could accidentally fly into a building...What the hell I thought? As I awoke and wiped the cobwebs from my brain, I raced into the living room and turned on the TV to see two of the most famous buildings in America smoking and on fire. Debris fell from the buildings constantly. The anchors were in a near panic. I sat down on the couch to soak up the situation, then called my mom and dad over and woke up my two younger brothers. I examined the buildings on the TV. "That had to be a Cessna, or other small plane." Alas, I was wrong. Within 10-15 minutes, the networks started showing the tape of the second aircraft hitting the building. It was an eerie feeling watching America under attack in such a fashion. Within a half hour, we had heard rumors of an attack at the Pentagon, a Car bombing at the State department and a crash in Pennsylvania. The local AM Radio station said that there were hijacked airplanes heading to Los Angeles to complete what the LAX/Millenium bomber in 1999/2000 had failed to do. At this point, I was still thinking of going to work, not realizing that my office was going to be closed that day. I called my best friend (a Marine Corps reservist) and told him to wake up and turn on the tv. We were both shocked. I then took a shower, and right as I got out, the first tower collapsed. I was amazed and horrified. I'll never forget the anchor's tone of voice on CNN. It was the most horrific moment of my life, worse than the Challenger disaster that I also watched live as a 10 year old boy. My mom was in near tears, my dad dumbfounded, my brothers already wanting revenge. I was in complete shock. As we continued watching the coverage, I started praying for people at the site. Then the second tower fell, and we finally saw some footage of the Pentagon. I headed over to my best friend's place at about 11:30am PST. We watched the coverage for the rest of the day, wishing we could do something. By 4pm, I was emotionally and physically exhausted, and I sank into the spare bedroom of his and cried myself to sleep, wishing and hoping it was all a bad dream. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September the eleventh, I was sitting in second period French class. When my teacher entered the room, I could immediately sense something was awry. He looked like he was about to address the class, when the principal came over the intercom. He announced that there had been acts of terror in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. I was in a state of shock, but it didn't have a huge impact on me at first. I went through the rest of my day, mostly discussing the day's events in my classes. Some rooms had televisions, but the picture was not very clear. It was not until I got home that afternoon that I felt the full impact of the day. I was able to witness my first clear pictures of the tragic events and became sick to my stomach. It was horrible watching innocent people perish, not only inside, but by leaping out to the ground below. Later though my fear came for a different reason. My father is a police officer in Boston, and I was afraid that if New York and other locations were attacked, Boston could be next. I was afraid something might happen to him, and it was the first time I was concretely aware of the risk he took to his job everyday. Fortunately, no more attacks have occurred on our soil, and hopefull that trend will continue for all eternity.
