Tell us your story: I was just exiting the path train at Christopher Street on the morning of 9/11/01 at about 8:50 am and was walking south on Hudson Street on my way to work when I saw many groups of people all looking up at the twin towers. I though maybe somebody saw someone jump. When I looked up I saw a huge hole in the upper portion of the north tower. There were flames coming out of the hole and my first thought was that something had exploded at that floor. Or maybe a helicopter or small engine plane had a horrible accident and flew into the tower. Working in NYC for some time, you become immune - even to something like this believe it or not. It was only until I got upstairs to my office that complete pandamonium had erupted. We got the reports of all of these horrific terrorist acts. Nobody could believe it. I think we were all shocked. Our phone did not either. I live in Hoboken and my husband works in NJ - that morning I could not reach him until about 11am. When I got through - he was frantic and overjoyed at hearing my voice as I was his. At this point, everyone was getting out of NYC and crossing over to NJ and outer NY boroughs. I made it to mid-town pier and waited on line for a ferry with literally thousands of other people. There was absolute silence. I think we were all so happy and feeling lucky to be alive. I'll never forget boarding that ferry and as we crossed the Hudson, looking at all the smoke and devastation. And feeling utterly helpless and heartbroken for all of those poor souls who lost their lives and were still in the middle of such horror. I think I was praying to make it over that river alive - still scared at what might still happen -- and thanking God at that same time for keeping me alive. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Hi there. My name is Terri and i'm a 24 year old student from Newfoundland Canada. I just wanted to tell my memories of 9/11. Never in my lifetime will I ever forget 9/11...NEVER. I remember coming back to my residence from a class to find the tv on and my roommate talking on the phone. The shocking image I found on the tv caught my eye immediately. I remember asking my roommate "Isn't that the World Trade Center in NYC?". She hung up the phone and we both sat down to listen. We were talking so loudly that the Residence Assistant came to our room to tell us to keep it down...but once he saw what was going on...he watched too. Soon, there was around 30 people in my little room watching the first tower burn. I thought to myself "Surely this must be some horrific accident. Nobody would even think to do such a thing on purpose". I remember saying my thought out loud and not two seconds later did we witness...live...the second plane ripping through the second tower. Tears streamed down my face as I thought of all the innocent people that had just died before my eyes on tv. Real people - moms, dads, children...I was simply horrified. Then I said it out loud "My God...New York is being attacked. The planes struck the towers on purpose!" People in that room started to cry and hug each other. I just couldn't register what was going on. It was too hard to believe. As the morning went on, we listened and watched the pictures of another plane striking into the Pentagon. I told my friend "It's not just New York anymore...America itself is under attack!" We were intently listening to every word the newscaster on CNN was saying and then he grew silent. To everyones shock and horror, one of the towers collapsed and was simply gone. That's when we started to cry openly...some people like myself sobbing. First there were two towers...and then only one. I just couldn't believe how things were unfolding. The whole room then stopped talking and we prayed. We prayed that somehow...SOMEHOW the second tower would be ok and that the people still trapped inside would have time to get out alive. But the tower was too far gone I guess. A short time later we watched the second tower crumble just like the first. All that was left was a tall area of smoke and dust. There were no words...NO words to describe how we all felt. As the day went on, the news of the fourth plane crashing took us by surprise. I just didn't want to believe that it was starting again. But as we found out that this plane, which was supposed to hit another targer, was taken back by the passengers...we cried. We cried because of the courage shown by those brave men and women who chose to fight back and gave the ultimate sacrifice so others wouldn't have to die. Never during that day did I think that those attacks, other than emotionally, would effect me. But I was wrong. In the middle of the day, a large blood drive was held and we were told it was for the people in New York. I jumped to my feet and ralleyed as many people as I could find to come with me to give blood. I told people that weren't for the idea "It's the very least we can do...this is our chance to help them". That sentence did it for most people. The blood clinic was so crowded. Most people from my university went to give blood and the clinic had to extend the time it was open! That night, as my group continued to watch the news, a house meeting was called. We got dressed and went downstairs to see what was going on. There was a representative from the volunteer commitee at MUN and he was asking for our help. He told us of the planes that were being diverted here from the USA and the stranded passengers were going to be put up at our university. He wanted some volunteers to help them get ready for the influx of an expected 600 people. My entire house of 68 people said "We're there" and we got ready for an unforgettable night. We went over to the student center where the passengers were going to stay. We helped to set up the cots, break open the university's emergency supplies and got everything ready. I myself helped also to get some translators on the go since we were expecting people from all over the world. We tried to think of everything these people would need such as phone service, care for those with disabilities and so on. The provincial phone company heard what were were doing and volunteered to set up over a dozen phoned with long distance service free of charge so that the passengers could call loved ones. We had a room set up for people with disabilities and people on hand to assist them. Some people had to go back to rez because they had classes the next morning and it was already around 1am. I had class too...but thought staying to help to be much more important. In the end, around 12 of us stayed to help when people arrived. We were given jobs, like giving tours, and showing people to their cots and so on. I was one of the people to show people to their cots. When the people finally arrived, it was very overwhelming for me. All I could think of was "This tragedy is actually effecting me...here in Newfoundland". I showed grateful passengers to their cots and did my best to answer peoples questions about what had happened in New York. They weren't given much information on the planes and were finding out the terrible news from us. I met this one woman who was in tears shortly after she had finished a phone call. I went up to her and asked if there was anything I could do. She told me that her nephew was one of those killed on the attack at the Pentagon. She was alone on this trip and had nobody she knew to turn to. So I stayed with her and listened to her stories of how promising a life her nephew was leading. I was honored to be hearing the story of one of those killed in these attacks. I saw no classes over the next five days! I was too busy helping the stranded passengers. If anything good came out of these attacks, it was bringing out the best in people to help those in need during a crisis. Dozens of restaurants around the city donated food for the passengers. People had donated clean clothes, towels, blankets and toys for the children. Businesses around town donated essentials such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes for everyone. The citywide bus service had free transportation all over the city so the passengers could go sightseeing. And everyone were offering their time to just talk to the passengers and offer a friendly ear. The university itself also had a hand in keeping things lively. Plays, concerts and socials were planned to keep everyone busy and as happy as possible. I remember during one social, one man got up and offered a toast...a toast to everyone who had lost their life in the attacks on America. We all stood silent for a long time...remembering lives lost. Then that man thanked us for all we had done and he then toasted "To new friends made" and we all joined! Five days after the passengers came to Newfoundland, flights were arranged and everyone left for home. I'll never forget that time and I thank God for giving me an opportunity to help out. It made me feel not so helpless during that time. I didn't have to sit and watch people suffer...I actually got a chance to help and make a small difference. A year after the attacks, the university gathered at our clock tower and help a memorial service for those who died a year ago. Classes were cancelled that day out of respect and we all went to the ceremony. During the few minutes of silence, I started to cry. I cried because all I could picture in my head were those planes crashing into those towers, the Pentagon and the one that was brought down by the people on the plane. I wished it didn't have to happen. It shouldn't have happened... This Thursday, in two days time, will mark the second anniversary of 9/11. For me, it will be marked by a day of watching the news and memorial services on tv. But also, it will be marked by me reading out the names of every person killed and their age. I want to know all of the names of those killed because I don't want them to EVER be forgotten. America...especially New York...NEWFOUNDLAND LOVES YOU!!! Someday soon, I promise to visit New York...for my first time...and my dream is to visit ground zero and lay a single rose as my little memorial of that horrible day. You showed the world just how stong you are...and the world watched. It was a true honor to be able to do my little part that day. And just a small note to those responsible for what had happened. I'm not about to tell you off. I'm not about to tell you how much I hate you for what you did. All I am going to say is: IT DIDN'T WORK!!! You did NOT destroy America's spirit. I was confined to my first grade classroom when another teacher brought around a note telling me that some events had occurred and we were to remain in our classrooms the remainder of the day. During lunch I was able to catch a glipse of the television and heard that a plane had crashed into the WTC. I went to my computer and emailed my best friend, Sara Low, who was a flight attendant for American Airlines Flight #11 to see if she could tell me what was happening. Sara was living in Boston at the time. Sara was suppose to be off that weekend, but had picked up a trip from Boston to LA last minute. I wasn't aware that she was flying that day until that afternoon a little before 3:00pm when my husband came to school with tears in his eyes. Before he could say anything, I knew that my closest friend, Sara, was on one of the flights and that she was gone. I remember what I was wearing, the smells that were around me and the song from my cd playing in my car that day was James Taylor's Fire and Rain. That song hits me hard every time I hear it. How can someone so young, beautiful and full of so much life be taken away in such a horrible way? Sara as well as the other crew members were HEROES that day. I know that no matter what was occuring on that flight - they were doing their job! My heart goes out to the families and friends of those that were lost on that unforgetable day. Tell us your story: I had just started my first graders on a timed writing assignment when another teacher came down the hall rubbing her shoulders. She was shaking her head in disbelief and talking about a plane crashing into one of the World Trade Center buildings. I thought it was just a horrible accident until one of my first grade team members came to me white as a ghost. She said that they had just attacked the Pentagon and had flown planes into both towers of the World Trade Center. I finally understood the magnitude of the situation. We just fell into each other's arms and hugged for a long time. We all struggled to get through the day as best as we could. I have never had to hold back tears for so long. The staff at the school worked together to accomodate the parents arriving to pick up their children as well as keeping those who remained at school occupied. When I arrived home I turned on the television. It remained on for many days as I tried to absorb all that happened. The tears finally came. She turned the television on and told me a jet airplane crashed into the twin towers. I rubbed my eyes not knowing what was really happening. Then the second plane crashed into the twin towers. I said oh lord what is happening. I told my wife this is not natural. Then the Pentagon was hit. It seemed like a bad dream. Then the fourth plane crashed in PA. I along with a million other Americans was devistated. It was like a movie. Not real. How could this happen to the United States. The reality set in. I felt helpless. Such a major tragedey for the American people. So many innocent lives lost. The people who worked in the trade center lost there lives. The New York Fire Fighters and Police officers who stood tall to rescue all the people they could that also lost their lives. They are Heroe's. So many lives lost. It hit us hard here too. So many family's torn apart. My heart go's out to all the family's who lost a loved one. May the lives lost in this act of terrorism not die in vain. I pray for all people who lost a loved one. For all the Americans who helped when New York needed them at ground zero. Those who helped to save lives. Those who helped in the clean up. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My grandmother,Jewel Melton, died on Sept. 8, 2001. She was 94 years old. Her funeral was held on Sept. 11th in Clarksdale, Ms. She and her husband Doyle, had a large family of 5 children, 17 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren. Only Doyle and one grandchild passed on before her. All other survived as her large legacy to life. Sept. 11 was the day that each family member would share our loss that would change our lives forever. The clear hot Mississippi Morning greeted our greiving hearts. We had to prepare for our final good-byes. Since my husband, Paul Hanks, was to sing "The Lord's Prayer" and other songs at the service, we spent the previous night at the Hampton Inn in Clarksdale. He rose early for a small breakfast, and to warm up his voice. I was getting ready to go to the funeral home when he burst into the room and said, "Turn the TV on. One of the Twin Towers is on fire." Our oldest son, Jess, had lived in New York and we were familiar with the towers and their beautiful sight. Our hearts sank when the reports were suggesting that a plane had possibly flown into the tower. Prayers were said for the injured, and for the safe exit of the people in the building. Our eyes were glued to the TV. We kept saying that we must finish getting ready and go to the funeral home. But, as we watched the first tower burning, we were shocked to see a second plane fly into the second tower. We were stunned. We sat in silence as we listened to reports of a bombing of the Pentagon; then, a plane down in Pennsylvania, and, finally President Bush ordering the grounding of all flights in the entire US. We were a nation under attack. And, yet, we had the funeral to attend. Paul had to sing in just about an hour. I had to say my farewell to a strong, beautiful Lady that had always been a part of my world. My family was joining together in our sorrow. Now, we would arrive with the seed of fear and bewilderment in our hearts as well and the pain of parting. While Paul and I were staring at our TV, our nephew, Michael, was in a neighboring hotel packing for Washington, DC. He was a firefighter at one of the units called to the Pentagon. His wife and three kids were racing to pack everything and make an emergency drive back to Washington. They would have to miss the funeral. Our Nation's Capitol had been attacked. Mike was needed at home. The Lord's Prayer was my Mamo's favorite. Prior to her death, she repeated it to or with almost everyone who visited her in the nursing home in Memphis, Tn. During her entire 94 years, her mind was bright and witty. It was only fitting that Paul should sing it at her funeral. It was also printed in her casket. It was a moving experience when Paul sang it at the service. Everyone listened with quiet reverence. There was such a special feeling that the song/prayer was connecting Heaven and Earth. That my Mamo was smiling as she sat in her mansion and heard the sweet music and song. We did not know then that it was within the same hour or two that a brave hero was reciting the prayer on a cell phone in a plane in PA. The Lord's Prayer soothed our aching hearts. It lifted us to Heavenly heights, and brought angels to our earthly plane. I still sing or recite it almost every day. For more that one reason, to me it is the "Prayer of Sept 11th" My Mamo was buried on the day the world mourned. Our family had our private mourning, and shared in our countries national mournig. I was in Clarksdale, Ms where I was born. Thoughts of my mortality filled my mind that morning. Thoughts of this world's temporary condition were added by the terrorist attacks. I am passing, this world is passing. "Only what is done for Christ" will last. "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done. In earth as it is in Heaven. Amen" On this day, one year later a stranger stood on Farm Road in Memphis, Tn and handed out free flags to each passing vehicle. I went that way to take my 12 year old sonWill Hanks, to the seventh grade at Harding Academy. I pushed the button to lower the window and gratefully accepted my flag. The stranger said, " Have a wonderful morning. God Bless you" I replied, "God bless you, too." Will and I recited the pledge of allegiance several times. We emphasized "ONE NATION UNDER GOD". He was meeting his school mates at the flag pole to pray for the families of the Sept. 11 victims. They will pray for our Nation. I hope the say the Lord's Prayer. I certainly have. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Two days are very vivid in my memory. September 10th was a perfect day for me. I had time to work out, dinner was ready when my husband and I got home because I had time to actually put something in the crock pot before I left, which was unusual. My husband, me and the kids all sat down for dinner together without incident (our kids were 1 and 4 at the time.) The kids got their baths, we read stories together, said prayers and the kids were in bed by 9 p.m., again extremely unusual. My husband and I sat on the couch that night and commented how perfect the day had been and why had God so blessed us with such a special night. We even joked, "Tomorrow is going to suck!" thinking having such a good that day, we would certainly pay for it the next. My husband and I had time that night to read our Bible devotions, again unusual because we usually are exhausted by the time the kids hit the sack. The next morning, 9/11/01, I had a 7:30 a.m. meeting at the YMCA. On my way in I heard the news report that a spy plane had been shot down over Iraq. I thought, "There gonna pay for that one." The meeting was over by 8:30 a.m. I went to my office. A few minutes later, our sports director came in and said someone flew a plane into the WTC. I thought, of course, that had to be an accident. Then he came in said another plane just hit the other tower. I immediately jumped up and ran to the lounge where the TV was playing the news of these horrible events. I called my mom who was watching my kids, they were fine. I called my husband; he was fine. We held a quick prayer service at the Y. Members, staff and friends were coming in crying. They new someone in the towers, they knew someone in the Pentagon. We consoled as best we could. Then the news came that a plane went down in Shanksville, PA. I lost it! My father's family is from Somerset County, near Shanksville. It got really close to home. Shanksville is about 3 hours from Hanover and Washington is about 1 hour and New York about 2 1/2. But Shanksville was to close to my literal home for me to keep composed. After praying for strength, I called my Mom again, who upon hearing about the Shanksville plane, immediately called family in Somerset County. Amazingly, she actually got through on the phone lines. All of our family was fine. The rest of the day I was numb. For the next couple of days I was numb. I am still numb one year later. I can only pray that my children and their generation can live in a world of peace. The only way to peace is through the Prince of Peace. He alone will bring this peace we so longingly talk about. Not through terror, fear or force, but through justice, righteousness and love. I also pray that my kids do not ever forget the evil, savage and cowardly actions that were perpetrated on 9/11/01. That evil of that day was an example of what eternity without Christ will be like in Hell. Image an eternity of 9/11's. Not the heroism; not the unity; not the kindness in the aftermath. All of those things exist because of Christ's presence in the hearts of people. But the pure evil to conspire to kill in such a senseless and savage way is the evil that will be experienced in a "world" without God; namely, Hell. God has blessed America. I was conducting my normal morning duties in preparation for taking care of the registered guests and seeing that everything was ready for the new guests who would be checking in that day. I answered the telephone, as usual, and it was the owner's daughter calling from Denver, Colorado, who asked to speak to her father, who is the owner of the motel. I immediately transferred it to his office where he was at work just through the doorway in his home. It seemed he had barely picked up the telephone when he called "Mary Lou, come look at this". I stepped through the doorway to see him motion to the television set that he had just turned on as instructed by his daughter. I got there just in time to see the second plane hit, listen to the news reporters, and of course, watch the play back of the video of the first plane to hit the Twin Towers. There was very little conversation between him and his daughter since she had simply called to make sure we were watching the breaking news. We just stood there with our eyes glued to the TV in disbelief of what we had just witnessed and was fearful of what might have been yet to come. I will never forget the bone-chilling feeling that came over me as I saw what had happened and knew that this would cause the loss of numerous lives. I just said a prayer for all those people who were totally unaware of any danger about them as their lives were taken from them all too suddenly by the cunning of someone evil. I also thought of my son who is now a Command Master Chief in the United States Navy, and who has proudly served his country for the past 22 years in the United States Navy. I said a prayer for him and all of his military comrades who would be pressed into high alert to protect all of us. We owe our military, the fire fighters and the clean up crew a special thanks and our gratitude for all they have endured since that fateful day. They are far from being finished with their work of what is necessary to protect our people. My ultimate prayer is still that our nations will all unite in peace and there will be no more terrorism anywhere. I remember feeling sickened, but could not turn away from what was unfolding before me. Finally I had to leave the house for a doctor's appointment. When I arrived the receptionist and nurse were in tears. With the other's there in the waiting room, we all bowed our heads in prayer. Fear seemed to clutch at all of us. The appointment with the doctor was short and subdued. When I came out more people were in tears as news began to come of the people on the last flight that was headed for the White House had sacrificed their lives to over come the high jackers. The days and weeks to come were faced with a feeling of numbness in my home as we waited for news of loved ones who lived and worked near the Towers. God was good to my family - all were well and survived, yet there was a clouded feeling of joy - why had my family survived when so many others were lost? In this year that followed we have all become closer as we try to encourage each other to continue on with our daily lives. September 11th, 2001 will never be forgotten, the people who were lost will long be remembered for their sacrifice and acts of bravery. I drove her every morning cause her school wasn't even 1 mile down the road. I usually dropped her off at about 8:10a.m. I was also 8 1/2 months pregnant, having gone through a terrible pregnancy. Our family lives in an apartment where the laundry room is a separate building at the entrance of the complex. We live on the second floor. I had tons of clothes to wash that day and it was just too much for me to go up and down the stairs, and drive back and forth to the laundry room, so my brother and his wife offered for me to bring my laundry over to their house. They said I could make myself at home, eat whatever I wanted, watch t.v., etc. while I did my washing. So after I dropped my daughter off at school, I went back and loaded up the car with laundry baskets and got on the highway. It was such a beautiful day! I had the windows down and I stared at the blue sky (that blue that not even Crayola can duplicate) and I turned the radio to a local station. On this radio station these d.j.'s are very comical, and never serious. They even crack jokes about very serious things. Well, they started talking about a plane crashing into the World Trade Center. At first I thought they were joking, but then I realized that the tone in their voices were serious. I thought at first that maybe it was a small cessna or something, then they started to say that there were reports of hijackings. I couldn't wait to get to my brother's to turn the t.v. on. By the time I got to my brother's house, I heard the report of the second tower being hit and got really scared. My eyes darted across the sky looking at jet streams and wondering if we were being attacked. I couldn't run fast enough into the house. The t.v. was off and I heard the shower running. My sister-in-law was getting ready for work in the bathroom and I spoke to her through the door. She had no idea! She rushed out of the bathroom and we turned the news on. My God! People jumping, the sound of sirens, people crying....Then WTC2 collapsed as we watched it happen. We didn't know what was happening. We held eachother and cryed. She said to me, "Why are they doing this to us?". She was with me until tower 1 collapsed, but then she had to go to work. I called my husband, a carpenter, who was listening to everything on his radio. I called my mother who had no clue about what was happening, hadn't even turned the t.v. on yet. Then I wondered if I should go pick my little girl up from school. But....I stayed. I folded laundry in front of the t.v. all day. I cried. I have not been the same person since. When Linda announced it over the innercom I thought it was an accident. I never knew about Osama and that he's a terrorist. I ran down the hall into the CBE room thats where everyone was from my grade. I sat down near my Gym teacher. I then saw the first tower fall. I remember some people crying. Then I ran back cause I had to get my pic taken. I did it really fast so I could see what was going on. I was so surprised. Then I found out that they were terrorists. I went to zero period that started at 6:30 pacific time and we watched the news in there. By this time only the first plane had hit, but as we were watching we saw the second plane hit. I just cant imagine what it would be like to be in those buildings, and finding no way out. I couldn't believe it when I saw those poor, innocent people jumping, choosing their death. I am so proud that we have courageous fireman and policeman that would give up everything for people This is a day that I will ALWAYS remember and I will forever pray for those people who lost their lives on 9-11. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I worked for Merrill Lynch for 33 years and had worked at One Liberty Plaza when the World Trade Center was being built. And I can remember looking out the window watching this incredibly tall building going up. I remember when they were filming 'King Kong' and we went into the city to see KONG laying at the foot of the World Trade Center with the make believe broken sidewalk around him. I then went to work in NJ when Merrill started moving their Operations out there. I worked in NJ for six year before going back to the City in November of 2000. I didn't realize how 'unexciting' working in NJ had been until I went back into the City. It was so invigorating, so much energy, so much excitement and so many coffee shops!!!!! Everyday it was the same routine. Catch the train at South Amboy NJ. Switch for the PATH and get off at the World Trade Center. I would be carried along with the crowds up the stairs and then the escalator. I would bear right off the escalator passing the sales people selling wireless services. Everyday I wondered how could they stand on their fee all day. I would go into the American Coffee Shop and get my Latte...the people who worked there were so friendly, always smiling. Holding that precious cup of Latte I would proceed through the revolving doors into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, I observed the line of people waiting on line to show Security their badges before being allowed to go up the elevators to their jobs. I would cross the bridge over to the World Financial Center to my job. In the evening it was the same thing in reverse....out daily routine becomes so ingrained in us that we do it without even thinking about it. In July of 2001 I moved to Florida. It was a quick decision my husband and I made and it all fell into place. Nothing I had ever planned had ever gone so smoothly. The house was sold, we packed, we moved. On September 11, 2001 my Aunt Diane called me to say a plane had hit the WTC and she was upset because my cousin RoseMarie worked there. I told my overly dramatic Aunt to not worry, it was just an accident and everything would be ok. I switched the channel. And then the second plane hit and of course I put the News back on and I watched in horror as the Trade Center collapsed. There are no words to describe how one felt watching this. To this day I feel a gasp in my throat when I try to touch and feel what happened that day. I have been consumed by September 11 since that day. In December of 2003 I finally returned to New York to visit Ground Zero. I cried, of course I cried. And I stood there and looked around and I thought about the chaos of that day. And how could that possibly be that those events I saw on TV on September 11 had actually happened right here. I looked at the World Financial Center at the spot where the bridge used to connect to the Trade Center. It was now a huge window. I looked at One Liberty Plaza and I remembered my youth and the construction site and all the construction workers at lunch time of thirty years ago. I wonder if the people selling the wireless services and the coffee shop people were able to get out that day. And I wonder which people that took the train with me into the city everyday had died on September 11. How many of those people waiting to go up in the elevators were able to get out that day. So many memories wrapped up in this collection of buildings that no longer exist physically, but in my mind are so very vivid. The impact of what you no longer see on that sight is very powerful. I feel a pull on my heart. Nothing has ever touched me this way before. I will never forget it. I don't want to forget it and I don't want anyone else to forget it. I very rarely think of what I would have witnessed had I not moved to Florida in July of 2001. I know God had a hand in my leaving when I did. I remain obsessed with September 11, 2001, with the events and with the people who died and their families. I never ever think about the monsters who did it.
