<text>Only Deb & I were in the office. Suddenly she came scooting into the kitchen, saying, "Dianne just called from her car. The WTC's been hit by 2 planes!" She flicked on the TV.

We saw the first tower already aflame, then the ghastly, unimaginable, sight of the 2nd plane ploughing through the other tower. My first thought was, "Dear God, what's gone wrong with the traffic control system!", but Deb immediately said, "Well if this ain't some goddamned terrorist shit, I don't know what is." I was stunned again.

I then realized that both my mom and sister were in the city that day (My whole family lives in the NY metropolitan area), and I didn't know if my brother was there too.

I dialed and dialed. Finally, I reached my dad in NJ. "Just spoke to your mother and she's fine. She's heading uptown to meet up with your sister at a friend's house."

Then my sister got through to me. "Jen, NY is shut down. I can't get out, and I know that Denis (her husband) is stuck somewhere on the road in CT. Here are the numbers of all our neighbors. Please call until you find someone to pick up the kids from school."

I dialed for 3 hours and finally got through to a fella who'd gotten the last PATH train out of the city. When I said I was Cindy's sister he almost lost it. "My God, is she okay?" I said, "She's fine, but could you get the kids from school?" He was glad to, but then told me how he worked down the block from WTC.

"When the 1st plane hit, my boss told everyone to stay calm and go back to work, but when that 2nd plane hit, he yelled, "Everybody! Get the F**K OUTTA HERE! So I ran. I saw people jumping to get away from the building. I can't believe what I've just seen!"

I felt very lucky as my husband, my daughter and I had just flown out of Newark to come back to Chicago 36 hours before the attacks. I was pointing out the towers to Lily, my 2 1/2 year old, and telling her how, "That's how you can tell it's NY. There's the Empire State Bldg midtown, and the Twin Towers all the way down to the right." Then I realized that my cousin, Patriece, and her 2 girls were due to come back around today. I called her.

"We're home and fine, but we don't know about David Jefferds." David was our cousin who we'd just seen 3 days before at my parents' 50th wedding anniversary, and I hadn't even thought about him. He worked in Tower One!!!

Several hours later, David emailed another cousin to let us all know that he got out safe.

I felt so helpless. I felt so guilty for not being there, with my family. It took days to track down all our friends.

All in all, from my home county in New Jersey, we lost 150 souls that day.

Everything had changed. It's up to us all, as to how we handle that change, and I fervently pray that it's a change to more tolerance, more communication, and not a change towards isolationism.</text>

<text>I experienced the same feelings of shock, confusion, disbelief and grief as others did.

In December 2000, we drove up to New York mainly for my 3 year old grandson to see the Christimas Tree. (He always referred to the city as "Ms. New York" when he'd see a shot of it on the morning news show--I guess he associated the city and the Statue of Liberty as one in the same). We arrived later than anticipated, so we didn't get to go down to see the World Trade Center. I said, "that's ok, it'll be here next December for us to see." How wrong I was!

I had went to visit the Computer Assistive Technology Program (CAP) office at the Pentagon in June 2001 (my first time ever inside of the building). The people there were so nice, and I was so relieved when I received an e-mail from that office on 9/12 letting us know the staff was unharmed. But, my heart went out to all those who were not in that number.

<text>It is 1986 and I have just joined the volunteer fire dept. in my town. My husband and I have finally done something together. I get pregnant with my son and had to quit. Two years later I had a daughter. Not being able to leave my children alone when called, I decided to wait on re-joining. I did in March 2001. Sept. 11, 2001 I am a teacher assistant in a school for exceptional children. We heard the news and tried to watch the happenings. All day long I wondered what I could have done. Sometimes all we can do is exactly what we are doing...when we are doing it. It was my time to teach the children.......not be saving lives. My heart wrenched each time I saw a new picture of the people evolving from the gray smoke and falling ashes. The only thing I could recognize about each person was their color. GRAY...Dirty...scared....dazed...astonished and completely devistated by the tragedies that had just occurred. Being a volunteer firefighter, I thought of my fellow firefighters families. "I hope their families know", I thought. "What would I do if it were me?" They made the ultimate sacrifice. They actually laid down their lives for those whome they did not know, not because someone made them, but because they wanted to. It was what they HAD to do. I am certain they would not have done anything different. In the fire department only 18 months now, I still can't help but think what kind of devistation all the families are still dealing with. Being a Christian, I hope they all knew Jesus as their Savior and heard Him calling to them in the darkness and ashes of a life passed. I hope they felt the comfort of His loving arms embrasing them as they breathed their last breath. I hope they heard His soft whisper "come home....your work is done". To each family member of each person who lost their life on that dreadful day, I pray a prayer of peace and comfort and strength for a new day. It is hard not to have been touched in some way by this horrific event. On the bright side, the world was changed. The brightest ray of hope was colored red, white and blue. "Old Glory" was displayed many ways....none disrespectful....on that day and more days. My respect for emergency personnel has grown and my love for the job has exceeded all I could ever imagine. I will always tell my family - before each trip out my door - whether to work or on a call - that I love them. For I may never know the fate that is held for me as I take the necessary steps to do what I have practiced over and over again. Only God knows our future. I will always remember! I will always hope!</text>

<text>I had just sent the kids off to school and turned on the t.v. when I saw the North Tower on fire. I thought I was watching something from another time and then realized it said Live in the upper screen. I watched in disbelive and as I watched it just got worse. I called my husband (who is a mason and out on job sites with no t.v. of radio) on his cell phone and he kind of brushed it off. He did not realize the seriousness of what I was saying to him until he came home for lunch. Then I called my mother. It took 1.5 hours to get through to her in Greenbelt. We watched in horor as the South Tower feel to the ground and cried together in complete shock praying for all of those who were inside. As we discussed, Oh my God, what if the North Tower falls, the unthinkable happened again. I have never seen such an erie site in all my life. We later learned that my brother was just blocks from the Pentagon when it was struck. They were told to immediately leave the job site they were on and to get as far away as possible. They left equipment and all behind. I pray for all of those who lost someone on that day and feel ashamed to feel so thankful that my brother was spared when so many were not. We were told to pick up our children from school and after I picked them up I headed straight to the Blood Bank in Easton, MD where I waited for nine hours to give blood. The atmosphere was one I had never experienced before and don't wish to ever again. It was somber, yet there was one part of it I hope remains...the unity that filled the room and parking lot. I watched for days after the recovery started as jets and planes flew over our house. The planes which carried the bodies and remains of the victims to Dover Airport and I waved my flag proudly as they went over. I just kept thinking, if they were to look down and just catch a glimpse of me standing there waving the flag at them then they would know we were there with them and it was my way of saying, "Thank You." September 11 is a day that no one will ever forget and it is up to us to make sure of that. As we say in our songs, so it shall be...We are and will stay, The Land of The Free. God Bless America!</text>

<text>My TV has a timer that automatically goes on every morning. I woke up and saw the towers on fire - but I thought it was a movie. I proceeded into the shower and then I realized that my TV was on NBC - so that could not be a movie. I instantly jumped out of the shower thinking of my brother and a few friends that work in the WTC. I tried unsuccessfully to call back east - all of the lines were tied up. I figured it would be best to get ready for work and try to contact loved ones from there. On the way to work I heard about the collapse of the towers, the crash at the Pentagon and the crash in PA. I started to sob uncontrolably - partly for fear partly for anger. What the hell was going on?! I finally was able to get in touch with my loved ones within an hour of being at work. My building in downtown L.A. was then evacuated and we were all sent home. I can only imagine what those people who lost loved ones were going through watching the continous coverage of 9/11 on television. My thoughts are prayers are still with each and every person who lost a loved one on that horrible day.</text>

I listen to my grandparents talk to me about what happened in Pearl Harbor never imagining anything like this could happen in my lifetime. I have 2 little girls age 11 and 2 who mean the very essence of life to me.
After Septemeber 11th many songs were created and remixed with news footage, and memorials for the victims and this country. I took those songs, the speeches President Bush made, and a special religious tribute and made a CD for my children. So that they may know in their future the value of freedom, what it means to all of us, and the war we fought to keep it. I know my girls will listen to this one day and understand the pain this country endured that fateful day in our history. More lives were lost that day in this country than any war we have ever endured in this country.</text>

<text>I was sitting in my Biology class of 15 people, when my Chemistry teacher came in and said that he had just heard some scary news in the school office. He told us that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center and that it could have been an accident. Our Bio teacher decided that she would tune in the radio, so we could hear what was going on. She tuned in, and then all of a sudden we heard that another plane had just crashed into the other tower. All of our mouths dropped. I didnt know what to think considering my uncle and cousin worked in the towers. I was to scared to cry, so I just sat there in amazement. Our class was the first class in the whole school to find out since our Chem teacher came to tell us. It was time to switch classes, so I headed on to my next class. I saw my best friend as soon as I walked in the room, and then that was it. I just started crying. My best friend Megan was hugging me, and everyone was asking her what was wrong. Megan told everyone that my uncle and cousin worked in the building. To make a long story short, my uncle and cousin got out. They began to run and my cousin broke down. He stopped and wanted to go back in but my uncle grabbed him and told him that they had to leave. One of my other cousins was standing on the corner waiting for the bank to open, and he saw the first and second planes hit. He happens to be a nurse, so he called his supervisor and asked what he should do. The supervisor told him to get to the nearest hospital, and to show them his nursing card and to help out. My cousin helped save lives, and I am very proud of everyone else who helped to save lives. I knew that I couldnt do anything to help, so I decided that I would go and donate blood 3 days after. After we donated at the Veteran's hospital, a vetran said "Congratulations young lady, you have just saved 3 people and your blood is heading straight to New York at 4p". That was the best feeling in the world. </text>

<text>It was one of those days where you don't want to get up, but there's school and you know you have to go. I made it to the bus, but it didn't arrive until late. By the time i got to 1st period, my science class, it was 9:02. The 1st plane had already hit, and the second came moments after i walked in the 2nd plane ran into the north tower. The school guidance counselor was inside our room and as i walked in al i could here were my friends yelling,"the world trade centers were hit!" At first, i honestly didn't remember which buildings those were until i looked to my horror onto the television which my teacher had left on. For the rest of the period, every single eye in that classroom had been glued to that tv. Following that period, our principalmade an announcment. The television was scaring some students, and the county had informed all the schools to shut down the televisions. What happened next was completely unpredictable. Students, at first one by one or two by two, then slowly the number of names called increased, until the names would run consectutivly for at least five minutes. There are two girls in te school with my name, so i was called dwn to the office, and to mysurprise there was more then 50 parents in line, waiting to take their child(ren) home. My father was out of town, and i didn't know where he was, bcause he couldn't contact us. By the time i went to 6th period, people had forgotten what the pricipal said, or ignored it. Radios were on, and every shred of news was shared. We all sat with on headphone, crowding to hear details. On the bus, rumors wee flying. The scary thing was there was only at most 5 people. Our bus, usually crowded, was burstingwith space, and in a way it was somewhat creepy. That's when i think the realization finally hit me that something wasn't going to be the same...not for a long time. it took my father a week and a half to return home..and those were some of the most agonizing days i'll remeber. September 11th changed all our lives.. and that's how it changed mine. </text>

When a friend called and told me that a plane had hit Tower One on September 11, I instinctively went back to 1945. I assumed it was an accident, and I assumed that it wasn't all that serious (though serious enough for me to switch on the TV). Not until the second plane hit the North Tower did I realize that this was very different. I muttered to myself, "This is Pearl Harbor. This is war." </text>

<text>I had just given birth to my first daughter on September 7th 2001. We had just come home from the hospital on September 9th. Weary from not getting any sleep on the previous nights my boyfriend and I along with my daughter had just gotton up when we recieved a phone call from my boyfriends father, he told us to turn on the TV. We had asked him what channel and he replied,"it doesn't matter just turn it on!" As we did we saw the most horrific sightever imaginable, WTC Tower 1 on fire. Reports at the time were unclear as to what had happened. Then, still in bed with my newborn baby tightly in my arms we saw the other plane hit WTC Tower 2. At that point I still could not grasp the fact that what I was seeing was real, I kept thinking it was a movie. I could not believe what was unfolding before my eyes. The next few days were unbearable. Being postpartum ontop of this horrific event made turning on the TV unbearable. One of the many images that is still so vivid in my mind was that of a women holding a picture of a man holding his baby in his arms with the caption above reading,"have you seen my daddy?" I could not stop crying after I saw that. Here I am with a new baby in my arms that I brought into this crazy world. It was bitter sweet to have her and be happy knowing that so many babies lost one or both of their parents. I did not want to leave the sercurity my house or the peaceful feeling that I got looking into my daughters eyes. Even then I had a hard time not thinking about all of the unborn babies that would never know their fathers. Or the mothers that would have to go through such a joyful time without their spouses to help them. September 11th is a day that all of America will never forget. I as a American and a new mother will always feel for those mothers and their babies that were born after that day without their fathers. Those babies will never meet their dads or know the world as we did before that awful day in September when time stood still.</text>

              <text>what was i doing on 9/11?

i was at jeff's apartment trying to reconcile our relationship after a break up of 6 months. i had stayed the night and we both had the day off of work. we were woken up by the phone. Jeff's mom was calling to inform us to trun on the tv... i was extreemly sleepy, jeff came in and told me i had to get up and come to the tv. said we were under attack... i didn't belive him and fell back asleep and had a dream about aliens invading the world. jeff came in again and made it quite apparent how important and serious it was that i get up and come to the tv. i got up and sat in front of the tv awe struck. i think we both sat in front of the tv the majority of the day.

at the time i was working for the sprint pcs call center. when i went into work the next day it was very slow... from the calls we did get in most people were wondering when service would be back up in new york, being that some of the most advanced cell towers were on top of the buildings that went down. i also remember getting a call from a customer that really shook me and made me realize just how true that this all was. it broke me out of my denial... a woman called very distraut... saying that she would like to get tapes of her voice mail and the voice mail of her husband. her husband was on one of the airplanes that went into one of the towers. she described the voicemails that were left... her husband telling her how much he loved her, saying sorry for the things he did wrong, praying for her forgiveness. he knew he was going to die....

later that week i was driving home from work listening to the radio... and turned out that 2 of the hijackers lived two doors down from me at my old appartment complex not 2 years before the attacks. i was shocked. terrified that i was that close to someone who could cripple a nation. for the rest of the week i was riddled with guilt thinking about the things i could have done to stop them... i remembered how they would interact with me when i would pass them in the court yard, in the laundry room, and passing by eachothers apartments. i do remember specificly that they would scowl at me... one even spat at me as i walked by... they even went as far as to take my freshly cleaned and dried clothes out of the dryer and throw them on the floor. it all made sence.

today i really tryied not to think about it all. but alas... it's very hard to not think of something that affected everyone in such magnitude.

<text>As I was driving to workI kind of felt awkward. I usually spoke to my daughter Adianes on the weekends. She always wished she was in Fl with me. In 2002 she was supposed to over here with her husband, felipe, but it ended up in only felipe moving. When I got to my job evryone was focus on the tv. I work for a tv communication company)they asked 'did you see what happened at the world trade center?" then I responded "no" they went on to tell me that a plane stroke the #1 building and that is when i went crazy i said" Oh my babies worked there" I went on to call my daughter at about 9:15 and she answered the phone, she told me "Mom a plne hit WTC#1 and now they are getttting us out of here, I love you mom, and Kevvvvvin(her little brother and Anibal (my husband) I have to go mom, Felipe iswaiting for me downstairs" I gave her my blessings and told her get the hell out of there. I had worked at the WTC 2years before with my daughter and I knew the routine of emergency. As a matter of fact my daughter was working at Fuji Bank due to my reference. We worked together for a period of two years and then I moved to Fl. Oh, God I I regret my move. My daughter stillvery special in my heart since she was my 22nd Birthday gift on 8/9/78. She is the best duaghter amother can ever wish for. She wil forever live in my heart and in all the lives she ever touched. She was our special ANGEL and as she told me on a dream on 9/11 " Mom Im going Home!" the is were Ill see her again when I finally go home! I miss my baby so much!!!! god Bless all who are together with my pain and sorrow for our loss!!!!thank you Fuji Bank for making us feel loved at this time of when we feel more lost!!!</text>

            <elementText elementTextId="219205">
<text>On September 11, 2001 I was less than a month into my freshman year at Penn State. I had chosen to go to Penn State because of their well-known meteorology program, and moved all the way from Mobile, Alabama. I was scared and incredibly lonely, being so far away from my family and friends. My roommate, Ali, was from Ridgefield, Connecticut and on the morning of September 11th, we had woken up, as usual, to get ready for our Calculus class at 10:10. We always watched the news in the morning. Ali turned it on, and then she walked over to breakfast as I jumped in the shower. I came back from the shower and stood in amazement in front of our TV in my towel. I couldn't believe my eyes. The first plane had hit the first WTC tower only minutes before. I stood in my towel for over 30 minutes in shock. I watched as the second plane crashed into the second WTC tower. Ali came running into the room screaming because she knew many people who worked in the city. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know anyone who worked in the WTC buildings, but I couldn't help but feeling alone with my family so far away in Alabama. Ali tried to call all of her friends and family, as I tried to call my family also. I reached my, dad who was at work, and he told me to stay calm. I tried to call my Aunt Margo who lives in Somorset County, PA where another plane had crased, to make sure she was ok. I couldn't get through because all of the phone lines were tied up. Ali and I got dressed and walked to class in the midst of many dazed and confused students and faculty. Our professor already had the tv on in the classroom, and the students who had made it to class all looked so scared. We left the classroom and walked to the HUB (the student center) where many students were crowded around the wall-sized TV screen watching equally stunned reporters. All were shocked, and many were crying. It was as if no one knew what to do, or how to react.
One of my father's fraternity brothers from Penn State's wife was on the plane that crashed into the First WTC tower, but other than that I didn't know anyone else killed. Ali, on the other hand, knew many people killed, some whom she had just graduated high school with the spring before. Penn State set up many centers for those who felt they needed to talk to someone, but after the initial craze was over, things seemed to get back to normal. That day will never be forgotten.
My boyfriend, who is from Washington, DC, and I visited the September 11th exibit at the American History Museum in DC this past summer. It was unreal to see the pictures and items in rememberance of that horrible day. It brought back the initial feelings of shock and saddness, and the longing sense of why. I am now a Junior at Penn State, and we ofter remember the events of that day. It is still unreal to imagine the events that unfolded that day actually occurred. We continue to pray for the families of those killed, and our amazing country that has been able to move past this event and come out stronger than before. God Bless America!

<text>September 11, 2001 was the most beautiful morning ever. As always, I walked my son and some other children to school. On the way home, with my younger son, I distinctly remember looking at the beautiful blue sky filled with soft fluffy white clouds. When I finally went inside my house and turned on the television, the day suddenly became UGLY. What a contrast, within such a short period of time. Later that day and for many days later, the skies were empty. For the first time in my life, there were no planes overhead. I walked back to school because I had to see my son and know that he was safe. My sons are the most important things in my life and life without them would be unbearable. Thank God my children are safe and please ensure all others that weren't so lucky that day are safe and in your care.</text>

            <elementText elementTextId="219241">
<text>It must have been about 9:05am when the subway doors on the #2 opened at the Wall St stop. As soon as they opened, I knew something was wrong. A few people waiting on the platform anxiously pushed their way into the train before we were out, one of them saying something about a fire. I went upstairs to the lobby of my building and smelled smoke, an acrid, burning chemical smell.

I saw a ticker-tape parade of papers fluttering down into Chase Manhattan Plaza. Instead of the usual bustling of business people trying to get to work at that time, I saw groups of people congregating and talking. I saw a few office-mates, and first heard about the airplane or missile that hit one, no two, of the World Trade Center towers. We walked outside to see it, and then I walked even closer, to the corner of Broadway and Cedar at Liberty Park. From there, I had an unobstructed view of the two looming towers, ablaze, and smoking like enormous two road flares. Realizing that this crowd of thousands would not be the best place to be in a stampede, I went back to Chase Plaza, where I saw that the building's management was not allowing people upstairs. I took the escalator downstairs to the employee cafeteria, got some OJ and some change for a payphone (the cellphones didn't work that day). In the employee lounge, I called my wife, and saw the next events unfold on CNN: the President's speech, and the Pentagon crash. I thought it best at that point to calmly make my way home, avoiding crowds and panic as I did. I went to the ATM, took out $500.

I went upstairs to the lobby and saw that they were now letting people upstairs to their offices, so I thought I would take the elevator up to my office on the 58th floor to see what was going on and then quickly leave. I got to my desk, logged onto my computer, turned to CNN, and saw the North Tower fall. The few co-workers that were in the office immediately got up and left. I thought I would follow them down on my own. Stupid, I guess, but I really didn't want to get caught up in a crowd of fleeing, panicky people. I waited about 2 minutes, and was going to come down, but the building's fire safety warden came on the PA to advise us inside to stay put, because the air was bad in the lobby. We were assured that we were better off where we were than in the crowded, smoky lobby. I waited for about 2 more minutes, and decided to take the emergency stairs down anyway. I opened the emergency exit door and found thick smoke wafting up the fire staircase. I imagined myself choking on the fumes halfway down the 58 story descent, so I remained in my office.

Outside, more than 700 ft above street level, was a swirling, ink-black maelstrom of sooty smoke, papers slapping up against my floor-to-ceiling windows and disappearing into the whorl. I calculated the odds of a third jet crashing into my building, the next tallest in lower Manhattan. I decided that I was reasonably secure.

I waited, trying to remain calm, while I was assured repeatedly over the PA that I was safe. I was fine until about 10:45 the PA voice told us to lie on the floor if the air was bad. I thought that if the air was bad anywhere in the building, it would be way up top, where I was. So that's when I became nervous, wondering if I had made the right choice to stay put earlier.

At 11:00 am, they evacuated my floor. I took the now-operating elevator down, and walked miles north to Penn Station. I walked across Liberty St, where the smoke was still barrelling down the windy street. I trudged through inches-thick soot, coating my shoes and cuffs with the pulverized soot-snow as I did. I made it to Chinatown, my first stop northward, to buy a pack of cigarettes. I don't smoke cigarettes, but I did that day.

I hesitate to dramatize this personal account. I know that thousands of others suffered excrutiating moments of terror. For me, it was a case of "far away enough for safety, way too close for comfort."</text>

<text>All I can say is that September 11th, 2001 was the first experience I've had in bearing witness to such a tragedy. I was on my way to work, waiting for the bus. There were none to be found. A woman I was standing there with, casually informed me that a plane was hi-jacked. The time was 9:30 am, and I was supposed to be headed for Fort Lee, which is the town that the GWB enters into. Neither one of us had the slightest idea of what had just occurred. A bus driver, whose destination was for NYC, informed us that all incoming traffic to NYC was halted. Nobody knew what was going on. I called work and explained that something really wrong had happened, only to get home and turn on the news to see the towers in flames. The footage of the attack was repeated over and over. I was in shock. My sister-in-law, whom I worked with at the time, was sent home. She came to my apartment, and we sat together in disbelief and horror. Then, the first tower crumbled. Tears were streaming down both of our faces. I will never forget that day. I will never forget seeing those people running, the faces of sadness, and shock. The screams.

Even though I did not lose anyone, but was extremely close to it, I will never, ever forget the terror of that day. May we, as a nation, forever remember those that have gone from this world. Stand strong, my brothers and sisters...
we shall overcome. Love eachother, for this is the strongest bond, that cannot, and will not be broken.

            <elementText elementTextId="219278">
<text>"Tuesday the 11th of September 2001 started like any other day. It was a very nice day, I grabbed my bagel and coffee at Jersey Avenue station and hopped onto a New Jersey Transit train bound for Newark.

This part of my commute to work takes about 40 minutes or so and a big part of it is very productive for me. I normally read and respond to emails on my BlackBerry, particularly emails from the non-U.S. offices.

As usual, I went through the 20 or so emails and then proceeded to play some games of Tetris. Strangely, my games of Tetris on my BlackBerry were going rather badly. I couldn?t seem to clear the rows of blocks away.

I arrived at Newark New Jersey and got onto the PATH train. Still trying to get some good scores on Tetris, I finally gave up. A New York police officer got onto the train at one of the stations. Not an unusual event, as they use PATH to commute like the rest of us. This NYPD officer, however, was about to become the starting point to the events ahead.

As we rattled along the tracks towards the World Trade Center, this NYPD officer?s radio crackled to life. A voice announced that a huge explosion had been witnessed at the World Trade Center. My ears pricked up. Nobody else seemed to notice. They continued to read, sleep and listen to music. Again, the voice on the radio repeated the message about the explosion at the World Trade Center, this time with more urgency. I turned my head to look over at the officer. He was paying close attention to his radio, but certainly not taking any action, like stopping a subway train that was heading in the direction of a disaster.

We rocked and swayed our way into the World Trade Center station. I looked out of the window, but saw everything was normal. The doors opened and we filed out. Immediately the smell of burning. I looked around. People were not running, but rather continuing up the stairs and escalators normally. Once we got to the mall level however, the scene changed. Security and police officers were screaming for us to get out.

We ran out and looked up at a scene from a movie. Godzilla, maybe, or Independence Day? No, this was reality.

I grabbed my phone to call my wife to tell her that I was alright as I was sure that she would be concerned for my safety. No signal! Everyone around me had cell phones in their hands, but no signal.

I walked over the road to the Millennium Hotel. I went into the lobby to call my wife. I spoke to her and assured her I was okay. Just then, there was the sound of jet engines straining and a sudden deep and violent explosion that shook the ground.

Debris started falling to the street. People were pushed back 3 blocks. There we stood and watched in horror.

In the mass confusion, I had less knowledge at the scene of the attack than did people watching CNN. They would be concerned, knowing that I commuted into this area everyday. I had not thought of that.

My BlackBerry now became my only form of communication. My cell phone, which had no signal, was useless. I grabbed my BlackBerry out of my pocket and saw the first of many emails that day. What follows are approximately the first hour of emails beginning right after the first plane struck. As you will see they are frantic emails, and I have left the spellings as the emails were typed. It is chilling for me to read these emails now."

John.

"The day continued on in its bizarre way and we continued to keep in touch using our BlackBerries. I, for one, found it very comforting to know that I was only a few key strokes away from friends, family and colleagues. The BlackBerries worked until around 5 p.m. when One Liberty Plaza lost power. At that point we could still communicate with ourselves but not with people on the Internet or in Notes.

It has been very traumatic re-living that day by going back in my emails to that fateful Tuesday, but it?s therapy after all.

I am very grateful to have a BlackBerry and to have been able to keep in touch so instantly that day."

<text>My girlfriend and I were walking to school that morning at
about 7:15. We were walking from our scripture study
class when a friend of ours came the opposite direction and
stopped us both to tell us the news. When the first of the
two planes hit the trade center, I was getting ready to go
to my scripture study class. There was hardly any light out-
side and i didn't think anything different that morning.
If the first plane hit between 6 and 6:30am I was getting
ready for my class. No one in our church said anything
about any accident that morning, not till I heard it from
my friend, on my way to school. My class was almost over
when the second plane hit. I felt ignorant later when the
scene was being played on our tv screens at every class I
went to in school. I have no way of knowing how terrible
it must have been for those who were affected directly and
indirectly. Justice will be met.</text>
