It was shortly after 8:00 a.m. Central Time, a year ago, when the phone rang and mom was asking if I had the TV on. I said yes, I am watching something I had taped the day before. She told me to turn on the regular channels because 2 planes had hit the World Trade Towers in NYC. Never having been to NY, I knew of the Towers but was not really familiar with all they stood for. That of course changed that infamous day a year ago. My life has also changed and how I think about certain things. Even though I think we all knew in our hearts it was terrorism, it wasn't until after the Pentagon was hit that I was certain. I was on the phone with a good friend and we were saying, oh my God (literally crying out to Him), what is next? What is going to be struck next? When I heard about the plane crash in Pennsylvania, I immediately knew it was a hijacking that had been thwarted. I stayed glued to the TV for 3 days and in shock for weeks. I don't even remember sleeping or remember the few weeks after the 11th of last year. It is a blur except for what I saw. I don't believe this is something we will get over in just a year. I haven't. I still shake my head in wonder at what occurred. I still cry thinking about what those people must have gone through. I pray for all those that have lost someone, all those that survived the horror and live with it everyday. I pray for peace, but I pray also our country prevails and is safe from anything ever happening like this again. I have always been a proud American, but never more proud than I am right at this moment. I say this with all my heart, God bless the USA and all those that stand beside her and with her. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of 9-11 seemed to be just like any other morning. I was two days back from Arizona, tired and jet lagged. I woke up just in time to stumble in front of the TV set and see the replay of the first plane hit the towers. My mother was watching it with the utmost disbelief. She turned to me and all she could say is ?look?. I didn?t pay it very much attention, I figured some idiot navigated off course and lost control of the plane. So I proceeded to the shower. After a long, hot, refreshing shower I now felt myself to be more assertive. So as I stumbled back into the living room to see if they had discovered why the plane went off course ?BOOM,? the second one hit. This is when it finally occurred to me that this was no accident. From that moment on, I sat their glued to the television set, watching helplessly. It almost seemed like one event after the other, the whole day was filled with terror, the Twin Towers the Pentagon, and the third plane that was neutralized before anything else could happen. I believe that everyone that day in America watched with disbelief and sadness in their hearts. I don?t think there is a person alive who didn?t want to help in some way on that tragic day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Someone came out and said the first plane had hit the wtc. we allwent to the bar area to watch the tv. I mentioned the fact that I hoped it wasn't a terrorist act and that it was horrible. We just watched in silence and then I saw the 2nd plane comming in. I guess we all saw at once because everyone there gave a collective "Oh my God!" Some started to cry, and other than that it was silent. What could you say. After that they started breakin in about the other 2 hijacked planes. I knew at that point, that our country had lost all of our innocence. We were no longer on the outside looking in, but living what we only saw on the news about other countries. Some of us went home early. I went and got my 2 boys out of school and we came home and watched. they are both teenagers and understood most of what was going on, but still had questions. Are we safe was one of them and at that moment I couldn't look at them and tell them yes. Not ever again could I say that to them. We do alot more family things together and stay home alot more than we did now. It saddens me to think that our lives are forever changed due to this event. I will however, not be afraid. Not now, not ever. I love my country and will do whatever I can to insure that my children have some sense of security in their lives growing up. I will fly. I will go to NYC. I will show compassion for my neighbors. I will stand strong. I WILL NOT LET THIS TERRORIST ACT BREAK MY SPIRIT! GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL SHE STANDS FOR. NOW AND FOREVER! My english teach came into the room and whispered something to my math teacher. Even though Alaska is so far removed from New York City, I felt an indescribable sense of horror, terror, and fear. I was 29 years old, and all I could think was that I wanted my mommy, someone to hold and cuddle me and tell me that everything was all right, that the world wasn't ending. I have a large group of online acquaintances on www.livejournal.com, and I turned on my computer to see what information I could find online, and what my friends knew. I found the same reactions amongst my online friends, ranging from the same mix of emotions from those somewhat geographically distanced from the sites of the horror, to people terrified that their loved ones in New York and Washington were involved somehow. I sent frantic e-mails to a friend living in NYC, since each time I tried to call, I was told that all circuits were busy. I was comforted the slightest bit by sharing my feelings with my online friends. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Sept. 11, 2001, I was to depart from Newark Airport to Denver, Co. at 8:05AM. As we were taxing off the gate (late as usual) at about 8:15, our pilot anounced there was a problem with one of the cockpit's lights and that we were pulling off the line in order to clear the problem. The pilot also said that while we waited for the test, we could watch what looked like an spectacular fire in one of the twin towers (the north tower had just been hit). I remember sitting there trying to look across the isle trying to see the fire, but not seeing much. A few minutes later the pilot reported the problem solved and that we were ready to resume departure. As we took off from Newark at about 8:35AM, the plane first headed south before turning east and then north up the Hudson River, this route took us west of the twin towers, and gave me a clear view of the burning North Tower. I remember wondering what could cause so much smoke on an office building, because by this time the colunm of smoke extended south for a few miles. The next few minutes were normal as the crew stated preparations for the morning breakfast, but even before anyone was served, the pilot annouced the due to high shear winds in Denver we were being diverted to Cleveland. Eventually we landed in Johnstown, Ohio along with six other planes (minutes after flight 93 flew over the airport on its way to the Pennsylvania field). The rest I guess its the same as for every other American; sadness, rage, pain and tears. Memories of looking at the towers on the night of Sept.8th from Liberty State Park, and thinking how imposing they were but just taking them for granted, just as we do our life, liberties and freedom. I am troubled that last night I heard a mosque in London celebrated the "terrorists" as heros who died on September 11, 2001 and the questions still ache in my heart. Someone must show me when in their religious writings it states that killing is "just". Someone has to show me why with all the billions of dollars in arab countries they still live in poverty after all these centuries. Tell us your story: My story is pretty unremarkable-I had turned on the tv to check the news before going to work to see what was the condition of Ed McAffrey-he's a Bronco receiver who had broken his leg in the Monday Night Football Game the night before. I remember glancing at the picture and thinking, "There's a movie I want to miss" just after the first plane had hit. It sank in pretty fast that this wasn't a movie trailer and I, like so many others, had that gut wrenching realization come over me that the US was being attacked by terrorists as soon as the second plane hit. I stayed and watched the news coverage until the towers came down and then went to work. Work is as the secretary for a church in Fort Collins. We have a large tv screen in the sanctuary and we could get ABC news on it and we left it on all day-interrupting it every half hour for people to express their thoughts or prayers. We had a steady stream of folks-most of whom I had never seen before-come in to our sanctuary that day. Some just sat. Some prayerd, others talked among themselves quietly, a few wept openly. I dunno if they were all Christians or what and it didn't make any difference-they would have been welcomed in our facility even in a time when nothing was happening. I do know that they needed what they perceived to be a safe haven at that time. I remember feeling as though all of these people were a part of the human fabric of life and that we were all on an equal footing-from the lady who got out of her Jaguar to the student who showed up in a beat up old Toyota. It took several days for any of us on the church staff to get it together to function somewhat normally again..think we were all pretty numb-just like everyone else. I remember the feelings I had as I watched the attacks unfold on the news. The anger at what was happening. The unanswered questions of why this was happening. An almost disbelieving newscaster said that the 2nd jet airplane had hit the other World Trade Center Tower. I was in shock and hoped that maybe the employees had not been in the building yet, forgetting the time zone difference. It was a complete shock to learn the loss of life in that tragedy. A woman at work, who once lived in Long Island, told me her father once worked across from the World Trade Center. She had also hoped that no one was at work on that tragic day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On this day of mourning and history, I was starting my day like any other day as a freshman at Stony Point High School. I had to wake up real early for football practice and practice from early in the morning until about 30 min. right before school started. As I walked down the halls nobody had a clue what had happened and what was still to come. As I walked into my first period class, I saw my teacher was watching CNN for some reason. I paid little attention to the TV thinking either a school getting shoot up again or an accident with a plane crashing. But, little did I know it was no way an accident. My next to periods were crazy everybody saying what they thought had happened. That same day my mom picked me up early to go to the eye doctor. Not until then did I real have just about the truth about what had happened. After I got my eyes checked I watched the 9" TV in the back of the doctors office, that was when everything came clear and when I found out the time line of the events that just occurred. After that I went to grab something to eat and strait home to watch the news and nothing else. I was amazed, shocked, sad, and very angry. I feet like just saying...NO WAY... We were all getting changed in the girls locker room when our principal came onto the loud speaker and told us that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center Towers. We all just kinda looked at each other like "What was going on"? We all sat in gym class absoultly silent. We didn't know what to do, and some of us even thought it was a load of bullshit. Not even the end of gym we hear that another plane had hit the other Trade Center Building. By then I was getting pretty nervous. What were they going to do next? Was this really WWW 3? We all basically wandered to our 4th period classes. I told my boyfriend Rick, that I was scared, b/c they started telling people in my city that they need to start evacuating high rise buildings, and my mom works in one. I told him after 4th period that I wanted to go home. We all watched in horror as the first tower collapsed into dust, and then finding out that less then an hour from me a plane hit in Somerset County,PA. After 4th period I went home and called my mom in tears. I told her that I wanted her to come home. She told me she would be alright and would be home later. So Rick and I sat for the rest of the day, watching almost every news channel about this tragic horrific act of hatred. It was such a sad day for America. Yet, one thing I didn't know at the time, was that I had a little innocent American baby in my stomach. She was one of the many "September 11th babies" I thank God everyday for my beautiful little Hollie... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was nearing 9:00am and My Sergeant and I were getting ready to put our inmate hose cleaning crew to work.. We did not have any TV's on because the inmates are not able to watch them during the day. One of the inmates approaced our Officer Station Window and told us that an Airplane had hit the Twin Towers in New York.. They have Headset Radios. Not sure whether or not they were telling us the truth, we turned on the TV and were shocke to see the devastation that was occurring. My Sergeant, a wonderful woman, hugged me and we cried for the thousands of lives we knew that has to be lost.. We realized through our observance that this was not a accidet but a horrific act of terrorism!!!! Many of the inmates (males) wanted to get out and join the armed forces, even though they knew they couldn't being convicted felons. I have since learned that throughout most of the State most did not watch TV fo0r obvious Security reasons. I am not sure what all I can and should say. But, I will never forget the moment because I was not home with those I loved, rather in the dregs of society, a prison for violent felons. I was very angry that I was there and could not go home. I have a cousin who works on Wall Street and I was very concerned. He is fine! Thank God!!!! I cried for days for my fellow brothers and sisters in our Law Enforcement Family as well as all of the people who lost their lives, there families, for the lives that were changed forever by a horrible act of HATE!!!!!! I AM ANGRY THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN. I WILL NEVER FORGET THE SEREAL IMAGES I OBSERVED ON THE TELEVISION THAT DAY. IT WAS SO IRONIC THAT I WAS LOCKED UP BEHIND THE COLD STEEL BARS AND RAJOR WIRE FENCING OF THE PRISON WITH SO MANY WHO HAD DENOUNCED THE VERY MORAL VALUES OF OUR GREAT AND WONDERFUL COUNTRY. I couldn't wait to go home and hold close to me my family. The ones I could not embrace physically, I called and talked for hours on the phone. Generally we work at home and keep the news on all the time and we saw the second plane crash into the tower live. Q2.Has your life changed because of September 11th, 2001? If so, tell us how. At first, I was very concerned. I thought I needed to do something to fight back. And I thought I might have to give my life in some battle or fight in order to preserve our way of life for future generations. I had never had to serve in the military and risk my life for my country, but I thought maybe my time had come, although late in life. In reality, a year later, life has not changed much at all. Tell us your story: I really don't think it matters who you are or where you live, this incident has to have touched your life in one way or another...... One year ago today I was sitting at my desk working on my computer with the radio playing smooth jazz in the background. One of my co-workers came by my office to let me know that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers. It sounded like nothing more than a freak accident, until a reporter announced that another had crashed into the second tower. Like most in this country, I was dumbfounded. Thank goodness the FAA grounded all flights. My mother was driving in route to the Orlando International Airport, so I called her on her cell phone to let her know she wouldn't be able to fly to my grandmother's home in Missouri. I was so thankful that she wasn't in the air at the time these tragedies happened. Then we heard that the Pentagon had also been damaged by a plan crash(my father had worked there several years ago....thank goodness he wasn't still there on this day), and then the crash in Pennsylvania. They were sure at this point that this was the work of terrorists. Well, my husband works on Disney World property and all I could think about was his safety. I was also supposed to take a flight to meet my mother in Missouri to visit with my grandmother on September 13. We both ended up requesting refunds from TWA, and they were granted. My mother and father ended up driving to my grandmother's a month later because there was still fear of terrorist attacks. To this day, September 11, 2002, I still have not made it to my grandmother's home and miss her terribly. I just hope that one day soon, I will be able to make that trip, before something happens to her. I also remember cleaning my home on the evening of September 13 while having the news on (there was nothing else on television that entire week), and just having to sit down in the middle of my living room floor while watching the horrifying pictures and listening to the personal stories of those who lost loved ones or who were in search of loved ones. I balled my eyes out hysterically. I still do.....anytime the date or the emergency number is mentioned.....God Bless America! Tell us your story: My two year old twin daughters and I were laughing and singing along to their favorite Blue's clues tape, when I heard a frantic pounding on our door. My mother-in-law had come from next door to tell me that a plane had just hit the world trade center. I turned on the t.v. just moments before the second tower was hit. My heart broke as I realized along with the rest of America that this was a terroist attack. My thoughts immediately went to my husband who was doing construction at Fort Riley, about an hour's drive from here. I called and he said that he would be home as soon as they could, becuase they were locking down the base. I held my children close and prayed for everyone in New York, and then Washington, and finally Penn. We might be far away from the action itself, but when those towers fell, we heard and felt it here in Kansas. As my children grow, I can teach them about the brave men and women who gave their lives so that others might live. I can show them what the real consequences of hate. I can let them learn of the importance of freedom and our country by honoring the memory of those who died on September 11, 2002. I'm not sure if I want it to. Every time I remember this tragic event I get angry all over again. They have taken away from my child the security of this country.
