Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My day began with an early morning trip to a local discount store called Tuesday Morning. The doors opened at 8:00 a.m. and I wanted to be there to take advantage of the early morning sale. I finished shopping around 8:45 a.m. and got in my car to drive home. I usually have talk radio on in the morning, and the first thing I heard was a report that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers. My immediate thought was that it was deliberate, but that it was some nut case with a grudge in a light plane. It was only a few minutes to my home, so I turned on the TV in the kitchen as soon as I walked in the door. There was a scene of unimaginable devastation on the screen, and I knew that it had to be something other than a small plane. I stood in the kitchen in front of my 13" TV when I had a large screen TV available only only a few feet away in the family room, but I was transfixed; unable to tear my eyes from the screen. As I stood there watching, there came the unbelievable sight of another plane crashing into the other tower, and I knew our world had changed forever. I called my son in Columbus to ask if he was watching, and we stayed on the phone together until the first tower fell. I then called my husband at his office and found that he and his staff had turned on the TV in the waiting room and were gathered around with his patients watching, and was on the phone with him when the second tower fell. No one knew why this had happened, only that it had to be deliberate. I then called my sister in Middletown, Ohio and she told me that she had just heard that these were commercial aircraft that had been hijacked, apparently for the express purpose of turning them into weapons - aircraft full of Americans being used to kill still more Americans. I was dumbfounded -who could hate us that much? And then came reports of the attack on the Pentagon, and then more reports of a plane crash in Pennsylvania, and I remember thinking - how could this happen? How could it be so easy to hijack so many planes? How many more are there in the air right now and where are they headed? I stood there in front of that little TV switching between stations, trying to understand what was happening to our country, and finally looked at a clock. The footage of the attacks were already being shown. At first I wasn't sure just what was going on. At the bottom of the screen were the initials WTC attacked. I yelled in to ask my husband what WTC stood for and he yelled back World Trade Center. Then all of a suddon it hit me what was going on just as the plane flew into the second tower. My husband joined me in front of the tv where we spent most of Tuesday September 11, 2001 holding each other and our son. We tried to turn off the tv but were afraid that their would be more attacks on the United States. I will never forget the empty feeling that I had in the pit of my stomach on that day. I will never forget the loss of emotion that I felt on that day. I will never forget the feeling thatI had than night when I went to bed. I wondered just what was going to happen tomorrow. One year later as we are reliving that day again I can only think of the children who lost parents and who were born after the attacks - never knowing the parents who are being called heroes. I am just an ordinary housewife, I don't teach young children in a school nor am I a police officer, or a firefighter. I am not a construction worker nor did I know anyone affected in the WTC attacks. But that day changed my whole outlook on life and I will never be the same again. I was shocked as we were told.."The World Trade Centers have been bombed." 'Bombed? It'll be ok.' But was my teachers turned the TV on, we saw the smoke rising, then soon the collapse. As I got home I was worried sick about my friends mom. She had left a few days earlier to attend to her job, a flight attendant. I watched the names every night praying for the best. My friends line was always busy so I decided to go to his house. To my relief his mom was home and perfectly safe. Once I was sure of her condition I was surprised how good it felt to care for others. It was a new feeling I had never experienced before. It has made me a more well rounded person. The tragic events that day have shown me that when I make a mistake it is not the end of the world. It has made me more strong as an individual. Instead of caring what others think I have learned to go my own way and be myself. The last way I think I have changed is I am not so afraid to try new things. Before I was scared of failing in a new sport or activity. But it has made me stronger than ever. I think that September 11th has done more good than harm to our nation. It has made us come together as one. We will always mourn to all the innocent victims on that day, but as a country we will stand tall and accept the challenge the terrorists have placed on us and keep our stride as the greatest nation ever! Tell us your story: I remember sitting at my desk hearing one of the gentlemen I work with come out of his office stating that he heard on the radio that a plane flew into the World Trade Center. We all thought - what a horrible thing - wonder what happened to the pilot to have him run into it. What an "accident." Of course later we found out it was no accident. After that, my only thoughts were to get home to my family and kids, and to pray about the horrible thing that had happened. Katie Couric broke into the conversation to announce that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. And I thought, how sad, a pilot must have had a heart attack, or something along that line, and crashed into the building. Speculation was that it was a small, non-commercial plane. Then, while watching the fire coming out of the building, I saw the second plane hit, and immediately thought, terrorism. I called my parents and my sister, who was also on maternity leave, to tell them to turn on the television. Then, the Pentagon, and finally the crash approximately 90 miles from Homer City, in Shanksville. I used the camcorder and recorded the coverage on the television. Someday, when Nathaniel is old enough to understand, I hope this video tape will give him a personal connection to the tragedy, to help him realize the magnitude of what happened that day. The following essay is not meant to be the ultimate view of that horrific day. It is simply my personal thoughts. The opinions expressed are mine alone. My personal take on the tragedy that devastated virtually all of the US and most of the world. I was in a cheeful mood on my way to visit my sister in complete ignorance on what happened in NYC and Washington DC. Then I over heard at 8th and Market in downtown Phila, PA on my way to Cherry Hill, NJ, some women talking very excitedly, profoundly upset the World Trade Center was bombed, completely destroyed. They also said the Pentagon was bombed too. At first there was complete disbelief. Oh they must have heard some absurd rumors. Someone's pulling an extremely poor taste joke. Than as I heard more and more people saying pretty much the same thing came to a complete realization that it was true. As I went to the high speed line literally thousands, if not tens of thousands of travelers were there. It was wall to wall people. Normally the trains run every ten minutes during the day. Sepember 11th they were running every five minutes. Even than it was for many persons, including yours truly, standing room only. It seemed as if everybody was made a desperate mad dash to escape the "City of Brotherly Love" Mayor John Street had declared a city emergency. When I arrived at my sibling the TV was on and than I saw the devastation that was on all the news channels. I say that because my relative and I with her remote switched back and forth from the local, PBS and cable channels for as much news as possible. We soon found out, as did the rest of the world of course that four planes were hijacked and made to hit the New York high rise towers and the seat of the Defense Department of the US. Govt. Also an airplane just outside of Pittsburgh. Unfortunately I didn't hear that much detail about that incident. It seemed that the targets were the heart of the political and economic life of the great USA. The rest of this article are my thoughts, feelings. How can I begin to express myself. How can I find the words to describe my opinion on the worst act of terrorism on US soil? I feel that practically anything I write will be inadequate. For how does one explain a terrorist act in which there is as far as I know, no precedent. Well here goes. First whoever is responsible for this horrific act are mass murderers who did not give a damn about their victims. I feel deep sorrow for all the individuals murdered. I especially am feeling deepest sympathy for the airplane passengers. At least some of the workers in the World Trade Center had some chance of surviving. Those on the plane had none. Can you imagine the terror, horror they must have experienced in their last moments. The men, women, children. Oh the sheer horror of it. It's terrifically difficult to imagine the total terror that the victims felt. What really got me was how innocent they were and how much they did not deserve this. Of course no one deserved this. It was a cruel if not the cruelest thing to do to someone. As I saw the photographs of the men, women jumping from the upper floors of the Towers in New York, they reminded me of the young women who jumped to escape the flames in the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. I felt so sorry for the people who felt they had no choice. I hope whoever is responsible for these horrible acts will get what they deserve. Also hoping that no innocent people will be punished. That Arab Americans will not be unfairly treated. One of my husband and my friends is a Palestinian arab. I know her and her family are upset too. I also fear that since the US has strong ties with Israel that anti-semites will blame the Jews for what happened. Being Jewish myself this is a real concern for me. I know there are sites that do just that. Don't want to name them because I don't want to give them any more publicity. Please trust me. I've seen them. Also being a mental health consumer, being successfully treated for a mood disorder this is a reminder that the vast majority of people with mental illness who are under the right treatment are law abiding. Also concerned that the one year commemoration of 9/11 may open up old emotional wounds. Men and women and for that matter, boys and girls prone to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder may be having an especially rough time right now. This past January, a woman friend with PTSD committed suicide over 9/11. Even now she is dearly missed. Speaking of mental health consumer/psychiatric survivor a few years ago I visited "Fountain House" clubhouse. It is basically a voc-rehab for consumers/survivors. I am member of "Welcome House" clubhouse. Please see my "Clubhouse" article. There is a connection here. Many members of Fountain House also worked in the World Trade Center. Hoping they are ok and if not I send my deepest sympathies to their significant others. I also send my deepest sympathies to all the significant others who lost their loved ones on this tragic day. One last thought, to coin a phrase inspired by Joni Mitchell "Don't they always know when they're gone, They beefed up airport security and made it much more inconvient but much safer." In other words it had to take an event like this to realize airport security had to be much improved. I hope that employees involved will be from now on well trained and fairly compensated as well. After all they have our lives in their hands. It reminds me on a grand scale about how a stop light seems to be always put up after a tragedy occurs. For once I'd wish people would have some foresight instead of always having hindsight. Lastly I hope the American people will not let the "American Patriot Act" take away our freedoms. I think it was Benjamin Franklin who said those who give up freedom for peace deserve it when they lose both." I get up and turn on to channel 26, which is Great Day News by the KMPH FOX 26 to check for the weather forcast so i know what to wear or look out my window. The first thing that pulled my attention was the breaking news, I sat back down and was speechless and was shocked. I began to pray to God for those who were the victims and who had lost their love ones. I then called my parents to inform them about this tragedy which they havnt known yet until i told them. They came in and took a good 5 second look and left the room into the living room so they could watch it on the big screen. I went out and watched it with them along with my brother and sister. That morning was no ordinary day, I was not up for anything except just thinking, "Who would do this?, Why would they do that?" Many lives were lost, little ones left behind, spouseless, lost husbands and wives. Well I had no choice but tried not to think about it too much and did the regular routine, took a shower, brushed my teeth, dressed myself, ate breakfast, and left for school. When I got to school that even made me feel little bit more uncomfortable because I was away from my family and basically everyone talked about the tragedy. Nothing else was discussed about. Even in most of the classes, some teachers had the TV on all day long. When the bell rang and I went on to my next class, which is U.S. History, we were suppose to take a test, but we ended up discussing about the tragedy and watched the news. September 11, 2001 will never be forgotten for the people who witnessed it. It will remain in our history forever. I personally think that this tragedy made our country closer to each other and I'm glad that people got closer. And many had felt more Patriotism but Until then we have to work amongs each other, together as one to become stronger for the nation. Tell us your story: I was getting ready for school and then the DJ on the radio annonced that a plane had hit one of the twin towers, I had to leave for school but was like wow. My first hour teacher wouldn't let us watch any news stations to find out what was happening, but our vice principal came on the intercom every few minutes to give us an update. In second hour, we were allowed to watch what was happening until our superintendent of schools called and said that we were not allowed to have the TVs on or call our parents to come get us. My school is only one mile away from Barksdale air force base,where president Bush landed and made his first announcement, and my fourth period teacher took us outside and let us watch Air Force One fly over. She also locked the door and trned on the TV and let us watch what was happening. I was a volunteer at the VA hospital, but wasn't allowed to go in that day because of the extra security measures. A plane just hit one of the Twin Towers?" I thought it was a small plane with some dummy of a pilot. But my sons both work in finance in Manhattan, and one had just interviewed at Merril Lynch on Liberty Street. I was concerned about him, but not frantic. It seemed an isolated incident. Then I heard a second plane hit the South Tower. In NYC all our phones went dead. I called around on my cell phone. I was wild with worry about where my sons (and my son-in-law, who worked at the World Financial Center, behind the towers) were. God was good. Everyone was OK. We stayed in school till 6 PM that night, since so many of our students had parents who worked in Manhattan. We couldn't go home till every child had a place to go. As always. The phone rang. It was my sister. "A plane crashed against one of the twin towers" she said, "it's on the radio right now... seems that it was an accident". I hung up. I started thinking while I was turning up my radio at my office in Mexico City. The World Trade Center. I was transfer to NJ for more than a year. I was 25 minutes away from NY. And almost every single afternoon, after work, I was driving to NY. I developed an intimate relationship with this fascinating city. I moved by myself. No friends, no family. So I started driving back and forth all the time. Going to NY for long walks, museum visits,dinners or lunchs. My first "close" approach to the twin towers was when, after a month living in NJ, I got two tickets to go to the Cirque Du Soleil at Battery Park. While a break, I went out. It was winter. Cold. But beautiful sky with thousand of stars were up there... and two amazing structures were blocking my view. I fell in love with them instantly. They became my lovers. I was alone up there and they gave me so much company. So every time somebody was visiting me, I was driving to NY and inviting them for a drink or dinner at the Windows of the World. The bar used to be my favorite one. With that view. With those windows covering everything from the ceiling to the floor... and the piano sound at the back...Eventually I was moved back to Mexico. "It seems like it was an accident..we will continue covering this notice as we have more information"the guy at the radio said. I went to the next office and turned on the TV there. God... just when I turned it up I could see the other Tower being hit by something else... "Another airplain has crashed the second tower" they said... and I started crying. Believe it or not, it was hurting me so much. So deep. How in the world somebody could do this to all that people??? September 11 is going to be always in my heart. Is probably when I realized that the sick mind of the powerful people can go beyond the imaginable. Can destroy the most valuable principal we have: Trust. And I trust. And I want to keep trusting. How are we going to keep going if we don't trust? People at the office started listening. We, of course, cancelled the meeting.. and kept looking at the images the TV was giving to us. I can say that is one of the most sad days I have ever had. Every time I see the pictures again, I start crying. But I know that these strong people left can keep going against it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of 9-11 I was getting ready to go to the inauguration of a new President at my college. It started out like any other morning, and ended in a day with images and stories that will forever be burned in my memory. I can't seem to shake the image of one of the planes as it is about to crash into one of the Twin Towers. I didn't even know anything had happened until I turned on my car stereo. Even after hearing the news I was still sort of unaware of what was happenng in my Country. I remember calling my mom back home and asking her what happened and she was crying and yelling "someone crashed a plane into the World Trade Center towers in New York." "Do what?" was my immediate reaction. I just thought that she didn't have the facts stright. I was on my way to pick up a friend and when i got there she was in a panic becasue her dad is a pilot for AA and was he was on a trip in that region of the U.S. Neither one of us wanted to leave but reluctantly we went to school. The rest of the day and many after that was spent glued in front of the T.V. watching what had tragicly happend in a country where I thought something of that horrific natue could never occur. How naive I was. I watched as Fireman, Policeman, and EMT personnel rushed selflessly into th rubble at Ground Zero. I watched as people ran FROM the site and these heroes ran INTO the tragedy. But then as the airwaves flooded with stories and eyewitness accounts of what was happning I realized that it wasn't just the trained people who were risking and losing their lives,it was peolple like the passengers of Flight 93 stuggling for control. It was people like Father Mike who perished while giving last rites to a fallen rescue worker. Even everyday people who were nowehere near the sites were standing in lines for hours at a time to donate blood and give money. I saw the American flag, and continue to see it up in windows and on flag poles it isn't even the 4th of July or Veterans day. Even now almost 6 onths later I still get very emotional about. I have collected many magazines,e-mails, books and pictures of that fateful day and the days that followed. I have done this to ensure that I will never forget the heroic and unselfish acts of so many people who on that morning were just ordinary people become not just extraordinary people but imerge as America's heros-they are my heros. They made my realize what a privilege it is to live in the United States of America-something that i hadn't ever really known. And something that I never want to forget. I heard someone say something about a plane crash in the personnel directors office. I walked in and she said a plane has hit the world trade center. I helped her in getting the station on the clock radio just to hear them say a plane has also crashed into the pendagon. At this moment I thought that world war threee had started. As I walked back into the other room to finish my report it really didn't seem to be all that important any more. I went home and spent the next four days with my wife in front of the tv when we were not at work. I cried for four days straight. I still do when I think of the loss to all through this tragedy. IT WAS 1830 AND I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A CIRCUIT TRAINING SESSION. WE HAD TO USE THE MAIN TENT FOR THIS WHICH ALSO INCLUDED THE HUGE WELFARE TV. HALF WAY THROUGH THE LESSON PEOPLE STARTED TO CROWD AROUND THE TV. IT DIDNT TAKE LONG FOR US ALL TO BE THERE. AT FIRST I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS GOING ON, TO BE HONEST I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE TRADE CENTRE WAS, NAIVE I KNOW!!!!!! AS WORD GOT AROUND ABOUT WHAT HAD HAPPENED I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT, AND THEN RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY VERY EYES THE FIRST TOWER COLLAPSED. THE LOOK OF DISBELIEF ON PEOPLES FACES IS SOMETHING I WILL REMEMBER FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. MY FINANCE WAS ALSO ON THIS EXERCISE BUT AT THE TOP END OF THE COUNTRY, MY THOUGHTS WERE MAINLY WITH HIM. WE SPENT THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS WORKING AWAY WONDERING WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN, THEN A FEW DAYS LATER AMERICANS STARTED TO TURN UP AND SET UP HOME ACROSS THE ROAD FROM WHERE WE WORKED. OVER THE FOLLOWING WEEK ABOUT TWO THOUSAND AMERICAN SOLDIERS WERE INTEGRATED WITH US, US ON EXERCISE THEM FOR REAL. THIS WAS WHEN IT HIT HOME TO ME JUST WHAT HAD HAPPENED. We got up and started getting ready for work and school. As we proceeded with that task, we had the T.V. on catching the morning news. My now 13 year old daughter said, "Hey, look, a plane crashed into a building!" I stopped what I was doing and looked and thought, "Your right, Katie, must have been some kind of terrible accident." We proceeded to get everyone that needed to get on the bus to school out the door and the little kids to daycare. I remained at home while my husband took them. I sat down to rest because I was due to deliver my 5th child anyday. I put the T.V. on Fox News Channel and was horrified to see a second plane crash into the world trade center and from then on we were glued to the T.V. for the rest of the day. I was having pretty strong contractions that day and one thought I kept having was "Please, God , do not let this baby be born on a day filled with anguish, grief and devestation." When the kids all got home from school and daycare that evening, we sat and talked about the victims and their families and thought how lucky we were to be all together. Today, on the first anniversary of the Day that Changed America, we still feel the sadness for the victims and their families, but take heart that they, and we, have survived and are stronger because of it and that we have not and will not let terrorism break us or the wonderful country that we live in. In the face of devestation, I did give birth to a wonderful baby girl on September 19, 2001, just 8 days after the attacks. God Bless America!!!!
