I think that WHAT happened is the most important infromation you could get, but if you must know.... It was a normal Teusday afternoon at the Marlborough Boys and Girls Club, I had just walked in the Teen Center door when Shannon (the Teen Center staff)told my freind Holly and I to sit down. Holly and I sat there aimlessly waiting for the news she was about to share with us. She said troubbledly, "There has been a misfortune,today four planes took off. All headed in different drections. Two planes hit the World Trade Center, causing them both to collapse. Another one tore into the pentagon. There is still no news on the last plane." I really didnt understand at the time or maybe I just didnt want to understand. I was feeling a little nervous and a little scared, but all at the same time, confused. Holly started tearing and I didnt know how to react to this devistation. I was just in shock. Then Shannon turned on the news. Thats when I saw, with my own eyes, the horror and destruction of our nation.This event happened in the morning while I was at school but I guess the school decided not to tell us because of emotional elements and the learning evironment or maybe they though that we couldnt handle it. I am not sure why they didnt tell us right away. This tradgic event realy hasn't effected my life in any way. Right now I am worried about school and homework, thins teenagers should be worried about. Not a war that I cant even fight in! I need to concentrate on daily issues. I guess I am lucky though because I didnt have anyone close to me die or was even close to dying. I have to focus on living my life to the fullest. Now or days it is possible to imagine Marlborough being the next target of hell. I think that the entire day was important, not just one part.If I HAD to pick one thing, however, it would be the fact that this country came together as one and worked to help each other no matter what our differences were! I think all of us should remember the love, care, hope, unity, strength, and brotherhood that this country lost as one and regained as one. we should not remember the pain, suffering, hate, and gamages this tradgic event cause us. On September 11, 2001 I was in my office at the Administration for Children Services Field Office. I had just started this job a couple of months. You see I worked for the U.S. Customs Service Customs Management Center located at 6 WTC. I remember that September 11 was a nice, clear fall day. I got to work early as I had many things to do. My husband called me at around 8:55-9:05 and told me that a small plain had hit the WTC. I thought he was joking, I really wish he had been joking. I looked out of one of the windows in the back of our building (All of downtown Manhattan is visible from various places in the Bronx.) I saw that one of the twin towers was on fire. At that time I saw how another plane approached the buildings, but I did not see it impact, I only saw the smoke. I ran to my phone and frantically started dialing the telephone numbers to my friends at 5,6 and 7 WTC. The lines were not going through. I tried for what seemed an eternity and then ran back to the back window. However I was no longer able to see the buildings. I thought the smoke was blocking my vision, but I was wrong...the buildings were already gone. We turned on a small tv in the office and every one started to cry. We were in such shock, we were all numb and very scared. At that time one of my co-workers called us into a large room, she asked us to hold hands and pray, which we did. I know not everyone is religious and at times is hard to believe in destiny, but I thank God I was fortunate enough not to be there that day. My brother who is a NYC Police Officer was in Germany with the National Guard, and another close friend who was a port authority police officer was in Cancun in his honeymoon. Was even more incredible is that not one of my friends were hurt that day. To this day the horror of that day seems very real. God bless the souls of all those who perished. May all those people who loss loved ones that day feel comfort and peace in knowing that many people of many different faiths have prayed and shared in their pain. Tell us your story: On Sept 11, My two year old and I had been watching the news.This was rare event because you know how 2 year olds are, we usually watch the DISNEY channel. Anyhow the significane of this is that my beloved sister Lisa is a airline attendant for American Airlines, and she was scheduled to fly home on the flight from Washington to LAX Sept 11. Obviously the flight never made it to LAX, HOW EVER thank goodness she had spoken with my mom earlier and my mom advised against comming home at this time. Lisa is a single mother of Melissa 6 yrs and Allison 3yrs. My heart sank thinking I had lost my sister. The second thought I had was the fear of loss of my husband who is a commander in the National Guard and LAPD. This tragedy broke my heart. I feel empathy for those who lost loved ones.It could have been my sister or husband wasted to this tragedy. Life is not the same since that day for me and I cherish everyday. I also feel the fear and anger of this new unseen unpredictable terrism. Things wont be the same in America, I just feel the need to never forget how vulnerable, and precious our time on earth is.I pray for a better life for my nieces and son Maximillian. Tell us your story: I was sitting in English class and my prinicpal came on to the intercom and said to turn off all TVs, Radios, and computers because we were experiencing a power shortage. So we did. Then he came to our room and took the teachers out to the hall. They came back in looking extremely upset. One had tears in her eyes. But they didn't tell us anything. My friend's mom was suppose to be flying that day. But she waited for the next flight so she could bring my friend and her brother to school. So the teachers told my friend that her mom wouldn't be flying at all and she was going to stay home. But they wouldn't tell my friend why she wasnt going and they wouldn't let her call her mom. We were very confused...we didn't really think of much until we got onto the busses to get home. See where I live, there's two middle schools. The kids in the other school knew what happened. But they didn't know details. They told us two planes had crashed into the World Trade Centers. We thought that maybe it was an accident....but we were kind of scared because they mentioned terrorists. When I got home I found out everything. We were the only school that they didn't tell...but they thought it would be better for us. Im still not sure about that one. I thank God everyday that I didn't lose anyone I know. Tell us your story: Wake up, 7 a.m. ~ this was to be an exciting day for my two step-grandchildren ~ my husband, Dave and I, are the legal guardians of these two little people; our lives are busy, busy.... Kally, our granddaughter, was going to work with Dave for the morning because it was Sean's first morning at Mother Hubbard Nursery School. Both children were quite excited doing their own special "thing" and having the center of attention focused on them. I remember, very distinctly, thinking how gorgeous the morning was and how very clear the sky was. I was, I believe, as excited as Sean about beginning his new adventure in life and my heart was very full, so happy... Since this was Sean's first morning in the 3-year nursery school program, he and the other children were introduced to the concept slowly; the children were only to spend an hour at the school for the morning. The first half hour was designated for the parent and children to check out the classroom, do a project, meet the teachers. The second half hour the parents were to go the the library to meet with a member of the school board in order to get all the details about the children's up-coming year. In the library, as the parents were sitting and discussing different details of the school year, one of the mom's cell phone rang. I heard her say, "What? You're kidding!" The next thing she said, "Oh, no! Oh, no! This is terrible!" Our attention was riveted on this woman, who we later found out, was speaking with her husband. She turned to us and said, "The World Trade Center was hit by a plane!" Her husband was still on the line and, as she was telling him good-bye she said, "Oh, God. What do you mean? Oh, God!" Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in the area of the U.S. Capitol at the time the towers came down. There was a mass exodus from the Library of Congress buildings of people walking north, many presumably to the Union Station metro. Faces were downcast, people walked quickly and quietly, not in a panic. Police efficiently directed traffic away from the streets leading to the Capitol. One humorous sight: police used large canvas bins on rollers with Library of Congress markings to block East Capitol Street and stop traffic attempting to proceed toward the Capitol. One can imagine a potential terrorist terrified by the Library of Congress bins and turning back because of them. Rather than to further describe my own experiences of the day, I?m more moved to try to put into writing a reaction that has been with me since the event: I still have not adequately come to grips with, for want of a better phrase, the urge to kill Americans that a number of the terrorists undoubtedly had, and the will to act on that urge. It obviously was not an urge and will that arose in a moment of anger. It became the be-all and end-all of their lives. And it became a force of history to reckon with in a world where nations have developed technologies of mass destruction. As a student of American history, I realize I know relatively little about what might be termed a growing ideology of anti-Americanism. Pain and tears filled the room as we sat in shock @ the thought of those we knew who were in New York and for the people who were anywhere near the Towers as they watched, waited and prayed for someone to say "yes I've seen your loved one", yet so many people willnot get that closure ever. Within minutes of seeing the attacks in DC, PA and NY I did the only thing I could think of and that was to go get my daughter from school and hold her so tight that she said "mom your squeezing too tight". Not in a million years, tell them you love them whoever they may be in your life and NEVER let this day be something we take forgranted. Tell us your story: On the way to work i heard something on the radio about a plane hitting the first WTC building and then at work I was listening to the radio and I heard about the second plane hitting but everyone thought it was an accident.I couldn't hear much because where I worked was very noisy.Then when the Pentagon got hit we all stopped and listened to the radio they said it was terrorists but I guess I didn't really believe them.I went to my doctor's appointment where I was met by my husband.He had just woken up and didn't know anything about what was going on.As we sat in the waiting room we watched CNN and I was just blown away.I'd had no idea it was that bad.All i could think was how could anybody be that cruel? We were called into the doctor's office a few moments later where we heard our baby's heartbeat for the forst time. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a teacher with Fairfax County Schools in Springfield, Virginia. I was in the main office of the high school where I teach shortly after the planes hit the World Trade Center I learned about it in the main office. My initial reaction was there HAD to be a major radar problem - I was too naive to even dream of terrorism! I then headed back to my classroom where I immediately turned on CNN. It was my planning period and I left my door open. Students walking down the hallway would stop in and see the latest developments as they continued to unfold. I felt very nervous and decided to go to another classroom where I could view the news with other adults. On the way down another faculty member was crying and informed me about the Pentagon being hit. That really scared me since this was now in our back yard! Rumors started coming in on the news about other federal buildings in DC being attacked and/or evacuated. Who knew what to believe? I quickly decided that there was not point in trying to teach the rest of my classes. We watched CNN and the students continued to ask me questions. I told them I was learning the news along with them and even though I would give an opinon from time to time we all just watched in a state of shock. Even though I was a nervous wreck I did my best to remain calm and reassuring for my students. One thing that I must add is that my school has many students whose parents work in the Pentagon. The panic many of them felt was understandable and I was more than willing to let students go to the office and call their parents. Many other teachers in the school pulled out their cell phones and allowed their students to call from their classrooms. Everyone was desperate to know that their family membes were safe. The principal came on the loud speaker and asked the students to remain close to the building and not go outside for lunch as some students usually did in nice weather. As far as I know the students complied with his request and understood the reason they needed to remain inside the building. Many parents came and picked up their children so they could be home together. I did not have any that fell into that category but I think I was in the minority. I am happy to say that none of my students lost a relative or close family friend from this but many of them were effected in strange ways. One of my students has a brother who had worked at the World Trade Center in an internship program while in a business program at New York University. With the destruction of the building and his job his graduating on time was in jeopardy. Things were resolved eventually but this incident could have kept him in school at least another semester if not more. Compared to the other tragedies others had to face this was nothing but it was still something I had not considered. I also E mailed a friend in Toronto who wrote me back and said she had been worried sick about me and was so happy to hear from me and know I was OK. The phone lines were all tied up so this was a life line for me and many others to let our friends know we were safe. Sepember 11th is by far the most monumental date in my life. Up until that date I thought nothing would ever eclipse November 22, 1963. I had grown up in Dallas and remember the assassination of President Kennedy vividly. That is still an event I will never forget but I KNOW my life changed on September 11th and I have looked at things very differently since that day. I have let people who have touched my life know how much they mean to me and I am not afraid to hug someone and tell them they are special in my life. People are more responsive to being open with their feelings and don't seem to mind my sharing my feelings with them. I must admit I worry about my safety and have tried to appreciate every moment of every day since I have no idea what the next day will bring. September 11, 2001 changed my life and I will never be the same person as a result of that day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was like any normal day. I got up out of bed and got dressed. Got my 5 year old daughter up and dressed ready for school. She ate breakfast and watched some cartoons. We put our puppy, Smokey, on the leash and walked to the bus stop. After I saw she was safely on the bus for school, I walk back home and turned it to the Today show like I did on so many mornings before that. But on this day, the first pictures I saw were of the second plane hitting the World Trade Center building. My mouth dropped open and all I could do was sit down on the coffee table that was behind me. I watched and listened in horror, fear and disbelief not sure if it was real or a movie trailer. The time seem to go by so slow. My husband is in the United States Navy and we were at Keesler AFB for him to attend the Weather school there. I was not even allowed to contact him because they had closed everything down until they knew what was going on. I called my mom, his mom and others in the family to make sure everyone was fine. I also had to keep myself calm because I was 5 months pregnant. All I wanted was to go get my daughter and bring her home, but I had no way of getting to her school because we only had one vehicle. All day I sat in front of the TV watching channel after channel of everyone's account of the event. The one thing that came to mind was to thank God it was not my family, but to have him watch out for everyone else's. When I gave birth to my son, it was the morning of January the 11th. Today, September the 11th he is 8 months old and I thank God his daddy is here with us to see all the milestones in his life, but at the same time, I think about all of those babies and kids who will never know there father's touch, or the sound of his voice. To anyone who is thinking about doing this to us again, I will tell you that you will NEVER hinder our spirits and you will only bring us closer as a nation. NEVER FORGET! Tell us your story: I was at work, when someone husband called to say that the World Trade Center had been hit, about 15 minutes later someone who had been watching it on news said the first tower went down. I couldn't believe it. I was in shock. When I saw it on news I saw people running, jumping out of the windows. It was a day that changed my life. It got me to cherish what time I have with my son, I may never know when I am going to die, or him. It also got me to be closer to God. I realized that America needs God. I now say America Bless God, not God Bless America. I started praying for people lives that were lost. I prayed for their familes. From then on we still see visions of an airplane hitting the building. We see it all. This day changed history, but not necessary changed people. We must realize God hasn't changed he is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We are the ones who are changing through time. As we enjoyed the beautiful view, we took pictures and thought what a beautiful country we have. As we got down the rock and went in to the gift store, we were told by the cashiers that two planes had hit the trade center, and the Pentagon. We were in total shock. We browsed the store quickly and thought we had better get home as quick as possible. As we were walking out the girls yelled to us that one of the buildings had just collapsed. It was the most eerie ride home, as we crossed the Mackinac bridge we were very nervous to say the least. Our ride home took us about 5 hours and in that time we hardly said a word to each other as we were in total shock! We listened to the radio all the way, and when we got home, we were not prepared to see the devastation of it all. It will be something we will never forget and hopefully not have to experience again. Our thoughts were with everyone that lost their loved ones. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was 3 months pregnant at the time and my boss came to me to tell me that a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. We went to the breakroom and watched TV. My first thought was mechanical problem, and then the second plane hit. I could not believe my eyes. My heart sank and I could hardly speak. I work in the Maintenance & Engineering department at an airline and we all began to scramble to find out where all of our planes were and how to get them out of the sky as quickly as possible. We were finally able to account for all of our aircraft. They were all safely on the ground and all of our crew members and passengers were safe. We continued to watch the coverage that day and that evening I went home to pick up my 2 year old son and I hugged him so hard that I was almost afraid I would hurt him. I joined my husband and parents later that evening and I just remember looking at my small son and the son which I was carrying and thinking that the world would never be the same. My two boys will never know what it was like to live in the USA before September 11, 2001. I cried until I could not cry anymore. I returned to work the next day only to witness no commotion on the runway (which is a very erie feeling when you hear planes take off and land all day every day). We, my co-workers and myself, leaned on each other that day and the months to follow. I keep thinking that I don't know how someone can feel that much hate to want to kill so many innocent people and leave so many tiny lives changed forever. I pray every day for the heroes of that day. I include in that list of people: firefighters, police, victims, survivors of the fallen, and our government. I also believe that all Americans are heroes, because we have picked up and tried to get things as close to pre 9/11/01 as possible. God Bless American and all Americans!!! Tell us your story: I was unemployed at the time, and had just gotten out of the shower to hear a message being left on my answering machine by my father. He was saying to turn on my television, that a plane just hit the trade center. My first thought was actualy something like "wait a sec, its not April fools or anything" as I was turning on the TV...then, just as I popped in a tape to record what was happening the second plane hit. I just stood there in disbelief, my jaw hanging, wondering what the hell was going on. Looking back on it, I'm surprised I didn't think it was a terrorist attack, even after the second plane hit. I am into aviation, and used to take flight lessons, and my first thought was along the lines of some kind of crazy autopilot malfunction...I guess I just didn't want to believe anybody could do something like this on purpose. I called my wife at work and told her what was happening and she didn't believe me at first, I told her to turn on the radio and she was just in shock. I spent the rest of the day in front of the TV with my jaw on the floor and tears in my eyes.
