Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I heard about the attacks, after 9 a.m. Mass, at St. Francis of Assisi, here in Astoria, Queens, New York City. We're about 10 miles from the World Trade Center. About 9:25, Tilly, a woman about 70 years old, a regular at the weekday Mass, took the pulpit, very distraught, in tears, talking about a crash of some sort, and asked us to pray an "Our Father," "Hail Mary," and a third, shorter prayer. I was in the back of the church, heading out when this happened, and didn't quite hear what she was concerned about, but added my prayers to the 24 or so others there. Even the priests had left the altar and exited the church by then. I called my Dad on my mobile phone to get details as I walked to the polls, for it was primary day in New York City. I knew Dad would be informed as he and my Mom often have the TV on. He explained what was happening. It was a very peaceful beautiful cool morning in Astoria, even after the attacks. The Only sign of trouble I heard other than Tilly's plea was the wail of sirens at 9:38 a.m. Later, an engine from FDNY Co. 61 hurtled past my local diner, alarm blaring, heading west on Ditmars. Toward noon, I walked toward the 31st Street subway station, in hopes of getting a closer look, either from Manhattan or from the elevated tracks in the station. I had binoculars, and en route I realized that the binoculars would be useless, as the two towers had collapsed. There was essentially nothing to see from afar. I was also increasingly self-conscious about seeming a voyeur. I bought some lunch on the bustling thoroughfare, and sat on a bench and listened to a woman who said she had tickets to a Broadway show for later that day. The angry woman said to a friend while discussing the morning's horrific events, "I want to murder these people." She was referring to the many Arab that have come to live in Astoria. I wrote to some friends the next day via e-mail: "Hi Lucila, I'm OK here in Astoria. Never got a chance to get into Manhattan yesterday. How'd everyone else make out? Some of the oldtimers in the neighborhood were, sadly, blaming the many Muslims who've moved into the area. One woman, about 65, was particularly vocal, talking about "them." A wave of anti-Muslim hostility may well be one of the results of the attacks. When I heard that the "twin towers" were crashed into by airplanes, I was surprised that such people, the terrorists had done such a thing to America. As I watched, I felt a part of me break. The "twin towers" had been hit and I was thinking to myself, "How can such a thing like this happen and why is there so much hate in this world towards America?". As I watched, tears came dropping down my face. I didn't think that people were ever like this. For me, I wonder how the families of those who lost their lives feel. I was watching the news and this talk show called Oprah. On Oprah they were showing all the fathers that had died in the tragedy. It made me cry and think that I am very thankful to have my family with me to this day. For the children that lost their fathers and all the wives that lost their husbands, I send my deepest condolences. Be stong because those people who died are in a better place now! They were heroes because they died with love for their country. Through all this, I noticed that ever since September 11th, everyone became nicer and more patriotic. I've seen houses with the American Flag outside their houses. It's a wonderful scene just to see the American Flag flying in the air. I have more pride in my country than I did before. AMERICA is a country which is free in making choices and it's a country that will never ever be forgotten. America is "well-known" and it will always be in my heart. "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL"..... I thought, 'What a horrible accident,' but didn't expect anything else. We were listening to the radio on the way to school, hoping to hear good news. Unfortunately, we heard that another plane had hit the other tower. My intuition told me that something was wrong, and I started to worry about the people in New York...mainly a few of my friends. When I got to school, I heard that both planes had been headed here, to California. Then I knew, this had to have been planned, and I was scared. I knew that no matter what happened, no matter how much we hoped, everyone would in some way be affected by this. In my second period class, we were watching the live coverage on CNN when the towers collapsed. I was terrified. I'd lived my life never being in touch with death at this magnitude, and I, perhaps for the first time, came in touch with my mortality. I remember my friends and I were scared to death of an attack happening to LA, we talked for hours on the phone. I can still see the images of the towers collapsing in my mind. Over and over again. It was horrifying. On the opposite side of the country, we were still hit by this attack on our security. We're not invincible, we know that, now. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work. A coworkers mother called to tell her a plane hit the WTC. Being from NJ and as a kid watching those towers go up I was very consumed with what was going on. Luckily my friend had a small TV so I rushed up to her office and watched in total disbelief. Then the second plane crashed into the other tower and I thought I was seeing a replay of the first, then it hit me, I wasn't. I thought I was going to get sick right then and there. I couldn't believe it! I felt like my home was being destroyed. I kept watching and couldn't take my eyes off of the TV. At some point I remember leaving her office and going back to mine, calling my husband as he was in shock too. We couldn't believe it. As the morning slowly rolled in to afternoon, and it hit us that we had many friends and family that worked in NYC. I started calling people to see where they were and if they were safe. Luckily they were. Having heard a rumor that another plane was heading for California, I called my mother, who lives in California along with the rest of my family, to make sure they new what was going on. My father-in-law was stuck in NYC for three or four nights, he worked for ConEd, and helped with electrical hook-ups. The worst part of that was we couldn't get in touch with him for a couple of hours that day. My cousin was walking towards the disaster while it happened and realized what was going on and started walking the other way to get to the ferry home. Then the Pentagon...oh God not another. I have a friend who works at the main post office in DC. Trying to call her, and not getting through. Finally she picked up. As she did the alarm went off for them all to evacuate and go home. Then the last plane. My heart went out to all of those people.... That night just watching it all over again with tears streaming down my face, my husband and 15-year-old son getting very angry.... Comimg into work the next day and so many emails. People I work with over the internet and over the phone, I have never seen them, concerned with "my people" as some called them. One women was so overcome with emotion for me, and all the people who perished, just started crying. I had to calm her down. I felt so much emotion from these people. I hope that the families that had their lives ripped apart in seconds that day felt the kind of emotion I did, and hopefully more! I still cry at the most strangest of moments. All of a sudden, while driving mostly, the image will come back and I will cry right then and there. A part of me died that day, trust for people mostly. My mother came running into the kitchen, saying the most incredulous things about the WTC, The Pentagon, The Capital, it's all gone, she said. Half awake, I turned on the TV, and I will never forget what I saw. It was too big for me...too incredible. I ran upstairs to wake my husband, because I knew this was something I could not deal with alone. You see, I was born and raised in NY. Even though I live in California now, NY is inside of me, in my heart and in every bone in my body. My heart ached so badly for New York, and so badly for the nation. Just when I thought I'd seen the worst, it got even more devestating. As I watched in helpless horror, the towers crumbling, the dust, the papers, the screams, the blood, the absolute soul of New York was being crushed by some unknown reaper, yet to be named. Days and months of tears followed. Uncertainty, fear, deep sadness. Emotions that were untouchable and indescribable. My City was injured, yet I knew, just as sure as I breathe, that my City would recover, rebound, and be stronger than ever. I knew it in my soul that of any place in the United States, New York could and would weather this unthinkable crime against it's core. Now, one year later, it's all still so fresh, and the sadness is remembered once again. But just as I knew one year ago that New York would not fall, today is proof that I was right. And the nation is stronger and better and even more determined to conquer the evil that has come, with diginity, braveness, and with every fiber that makes us Americans. I remember my 6th grade music teacher coming in our room belowing something about the World Trade senter being bomed. Well, to bad for her because none of us 6th graders had any idea what so ever as to what the World Trade center was. Confused, we filed out of the class room as our homeroom teacher explained to us what the heck was going on! We were stunned and very scared. At first I wasn't really paying attention to what they were saying. Then my dad told me and I didn't believe him. I just sat there watching the news in shock. When my mom picked me up, she had the radio on the news listening to it. By the time she picked me up one of the buildings was already down. She aked if it was down and I told her; neither of us could believe it. At school everyone was talking about it and that was the topic of the day, of the year. I saw the planes in the buildings and the newscaster talking about it. Saying that she could not believe what she was watching. Then, another plane hits the pentagon and no one believes that. It came across that there had been an attack on america. We turned the radio up. They were saying how the trade centers had been bombed. At that very moment my heart sank into my chest. At the time I was engaged and about to be married on the 15 of Sept to a military service member. The only thing I could think about was oh my god I hope no one is hurt. I was worried about my soon to be husband and if his base was going to be hit next and if he was going to have to go to war. As soon as my cousin and I arrived home I tried to call him. Of course I didn't get an answer. At that moment I had been working on the last touches on our wedding. I put everything on hold. My cousin and I turned on CNN and didn't stop watching for hours. We couldn't believe what had happened. It was so sad and horrible. I finally got in touch with my soon to be husband later that night. It was then that he informed me that he would not be able to attend our wedding. Of course I was understanding with everything that had went on but I was also sad. All I could think about was the poor people that were in those buildings and around them. How all of this is affecting them and there families. How some children and spouses may never see there moms, or dads, or wives, or husbands again. I couldn't stop thinking that I could have been one of those people. My soon to be husband could walk out that door tomorrow and never come back. I guess that was when I realized how dangerous some peoples jobs really are. I would just like to tell all those families that lost a loved one that day that I am so sorry for your loss. Everyone that loss there lives that day in some way is a hero. I did get married on September 28, 2001 to a wonderful man. Yes, my husband did go to war in afganistan he is home now but there are still a lot of service members and other people over there trying to stop this terrorism. I just want to thank them for fighting for our freedom and for protecting us. All of thoses peole who lost there lives on Sept 11 and the ones in the war on terrorism were very brave and in my heart will always be a hero and will always be remembered. God Bless America and all the men and women fighting for our country during this war on terrorism. I just pray that this war will be over soon and that no more lives will to be lost. Just before 8:55am, an English teacher, Joe Ippolito, a great English teacher and a guy with a great sense of humor, passed my room with a comment, "a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center." He spoke those words without the usual smile and twinkle that he usually has in his eye. I knew immediately he was not kidding. I looked out the window and saw the most beautiful day.... bright blue sky without a cloud. Logic told me that planes do not fly into buildings with today's technology. Three of my football players were in my class. They pretty much ordered me to go "find out if it is true." I walked quickly to Room 112 where the teacher was hooking up his cable TV. He turned on the TV about 15 seconds before the second plane hit the south tower. It was a very long walk back to my room. I wanted to cry, but knew i couldn't. I wanted to scream, but I knew i couldn't. I honestly don't know how long it took me to walk the maybe 100 feet to my room. It felt like a long time. My players knew instantly that something was very wrong. I told my class that it was a day that we will never forget....a day where the world changed. Both towers were hit and burning. Since our resource area has windows and I could see that all of the teachers were out there I knew that something was going on. I was away from my normal job on September 11th, volunteering at the Southern Governor's Association meeting in Lexington, Kentucky. I'd been there since the 9th of September and the 11th was the last and closing day of the meeting. I woke up that morning around 7:30, dressed, and headed over to the Marriott where the meeting was being held. I expected a busy day driving staffers and personnel back and forth to the airport for their flights out of town. Around 8:50 a.m. my cell phone rang...it was my mother. This wasn't unusual since she called me just about everyday. We talked for a minute, then she said (very nonchalantly) "You should turn on a t.v...a plane hit the World Trade Center a few minutes ago". I finished up my conversation and told everyone what she'd said. No one else had heard about it either. We headed for the bar area of the Marriott and commandeered a television. What I saw blew me away. There it was, one of the buildings smoking profusely. I thought, this is weird...why would a big plane fly into the tower on such a clear day? Terrorism never crossed my mind. That all changed a couple minutes later when the second plane came into the shot and plowed into the other tower. By this time there was a sizeable crowd in the bar and all the tv's were on. You could hear an audible gasp. God, that gasp...I'd never heard anything like it. That's what sticks in my head. It was like it hit home to everyone in the room right at the same millisecond. We then knew it was terrorism. You see, none of us thought about it at first. Then, gradually, people started talking about where we were. I mean, we had 9 southern governors right there in one location. Hell, just the day before, on Monday the 10th, Vice President Cheney had been there giving a speech. You have to remember, at that moment, anything seemed possible. Then someone reminded us that the official itinerary showed that the Vice President would be there on Tuesday, September 11th. Now what? Would whoever was doing this come after the hotel we were in? I know, it's Kentucky...like anything like that would happen here. But again, anything seemed possible at this point and people started to worry. By this time, the other two planes had gone down too...into the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. The security details for each governor scrambled to get everything together and get their "packages" home ASAP. Then came the word that the airports were closed...indefinitely. That's when the real panic set in for us. I mean, we had 9 governors there. How are we supposed to get the governor of Louisiana home without a plane? Are we just supposed to drive him home or something? In fact, that's exactly what they did. Each security detail commandeered a rental vehicle that we'd been using that weekend. Nearly all of them started off by noon towards their state lines. That was the plan...each governor would drive to the next state line where that state's troopers would take over his security. They were responsible for getting each one of them through their state until they got to the next one, and so on and so on. Everything went off without a hitch and all the governors got home safely. To say the ones, like me, that were left behind were shaken up would be an understatement. So where does this leave us? I mean, the threat of terrorism is still just as real, if not moreso, than before September 11th. I've become facinated with the whole ordeal...reading everything I can get my hands on, watching every show devoted to it, looking at the video as much as possible. I try to find everything I can about the people on the planes, the people in the towers, the Pentagon, Shanksville, and those brave souls who rushed in without a thought about their own safety or lives. I hope I never have to see a day like that again, although that may be a wishful thought in the day and age that we now live. One thing's for sure...I won't let people forget...I won't let people become passive to September 11th. That day is my generations Pearl Harbor. I want every generation to come to remember those people, those firefighters and policemen. I want them to remain angry (in a constructive way) at the terrorists and the factions that cause this pain. I want them to understand that not all people of dark skin, Middle Eastern decent, or Muslims are terrorists. Most of them are just like us, they just want to live and let live. But most of all, I want them to understand that we control what happens...that we can't keep acting like we're above everyone else. This only breeds contempt and hate. That morning, I went to my job as a pediatric nurse worried about the usual mundane things and left that afternoon with my attitude towards life completely changed. When my office manager walked in around 9:30 AM, pale as a ghost, we had just heard the news that the first tower had been hit, but had no idea of the magnificent damage to come. Hearing about the Pentagon really hit home for me. The town I had just moved from was about 20 minutes away from it and most people I knew either worked there or somewhere near there, including my dad. I called my parent's house as soon as I could to find out if my mom knew anything, but all she could tell me was that he had been evacuated. The next few, dark hours were filled with more and more bad news and we finally had to turn off the radio because we could not listen to any more reports listing the number of casualties. After work, I called my mom again, and heard that my dad was alright, after traipsing through a large part of Washington, D.C. with some coworkers. I also found out that his best friend, (whose office was right next to the bombed section) was miraculously okay as well. Two men that preach at my church both had amazing escapes as well. One was blown across his office as the wall next to his chair was completely destroyed. He emerged without a scratch. The other was attending a conference that day and returned to find his office missing entirely. September 11, 2001 was a tragic day for our country, but it also brought us closer and caused a patriotic movement to sweep our beautiful, free country. My teacher came in looking nervous, and she announced to us that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center, but she wasn't sure if it was accidental or not. The class began to buzz with noise, but we were told to go on working. When I arrived in my world history class, someone was exlaiming that the Pentagon had been hit. Many in the class (including myself) told them they were wrong, of course it had been the World Trade Center. Then our teacher came in and said that both accounts were true. The class went dead silent. He tried to focus our attention on the conquerings of Alexander the Great. It didn't do much good, especially when the next door teacher came in and announced the towers had collapsed, with over 5,000 people in them. My next class, geograpy, we watched in horror as they announced another plane was missing, and they later told it too had went down. By then, many were crying. We had lunch class during geography, and some of the people in another class fearfully told us that the radio said a plane was circling Oak Ridge...my lord, I thought, if it crashes into one of those nuclear plants we will all die. I remember no one ate anything. The rest of the day passed in a daze. My cousin always went home with me after school, and she said "I remembered what you said this morning." And then it came back to me. Before we had left for school, I had had a bad feeling, but I had thought nothing of it then because, in general, I have always hated Tuesdays more than any day of the week. But there had been an extra feeling that morning. Maybe because they played the song "I've Had a Bad Day Again." Anyway, I had announced to her that something bad was going to happen....but I'm sure it was just a coincidence. We live about 4 miles from the crash site. On Sept.11 about 10:AM I was hanging the laundry on the clothes line when the plane came over . It was flying lower than normal and it was flying on a flight path that I hadn't seen before. It's wings tilted back and fourth . I looked over my shoulder to see it comming over. I watched it not knowing that it was hijacked thinking that maybe something was wrong with it, or because of the airports closing it may be looking for an airport . As it was going out the ridge it was loosing altitude. It's right wing dipped to the right and it looked like it was headed south. No sooner did it turn when it nose dived into the ground. I saw the flames and the mushroom cloud of smoke rise up above the trees. I stood for a moment in disbelief. I then started yelling and running toward the house my husband came running out to see the smoke rise above the trees he then called 911. I called my sister because she lives in the vicinity where the plane crashed. She was ok but she said that it crashed where my son Michael works. My husband and I got into the car and drove as fast as we could to the crash site. The happiest thing that happened that day was to see my son standing there directing traffic. He was shooken up but he was alright. He works at the scrap yard and he was about 250 to 300 yards from where the plane went down. He said it was comming in so fast and loud the noise was terrible. If anyone thinks this was something horrible to wittness it truly was. What my eyes missed seeing when it hit the ground,my sons eyes picked up and he saw it hit the ground. Also I would like to say that as the plane came over and as it crashed it was all intact,there was no smoke or flames or debrie falling from the plane. So that tells all of us that it was not shot down. There were true HEROES on that plane that day. I really didn't pay any attention cause I had no idea what was going on. When Math Class was over, I was walking to my Langage Arts class until a friend of mine yelled, "Amanda! did you know what happened?" and I said "No". My friend then said " 2 airplanes just when through the WTC and its big news" and I said " Well, I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe is was just a plane that was going out of control" I said that cause I didn't know it was terrorisum. When I walked to class, my teacher had the news on and all of my classmates were watching the T.V. My eyes got big when they kept replaying what happened to the buildings over and over again on the T.V. Instead of going over L.Arts, my teacher explained to us what happened and we watched the news for the rest of the hour. The whole day I thought to myself, " Why would someone want to do that to the US when we are so nice to other countries and don't wany any wars and nothing but world peace? and why are there even wars?" It showed the Twin Towers at night and it was playing "Proud to be an American" in the background. It was a poem about September 11 and the WTC. I cried so much after I read it and then I undestand the pain that the people who had lost a love one. My Mom came in and hugged me and told me that everything was going to be alright. I was standing in front of my building in Midtown, talking to a coworker when a man approached us and said, "Haven't you heard, a plane just flew into the World Trade Center". We looked at each other a moment and then went on discussing the days work ahead. I remember being in a state of shock, I didn't even process what the man had said at first. We got inside and listened to the radio, it was true. I remember being frightened- the first Building, then the second, then reports of an attack in Washington- people were running up the streets and a black cloud filled the air. The trains were closed, and I wondered where I would go... my boyfriend was in CA. I had no family around me. I felt scared and alone. We waited in the building as reports that surrounding buildings were closed down. People were walking back to their homes on foot- Later that evening the trains opened back up. I was on the first "F" train heading back to Brooklyn. The train was so packed full of people that you couldn't move, (it looked quite like the pictures of the trainloads of people during the Holocaust)but even with that overload, there was a disturbing silence. We didn't know if that track would be affected by the collapse of the Trade Center. Every noise we heard, was listened to in anticipation of the worst. I finally made it to my stop. I felt drained. I hadn't eaten all day...it didn't seem important. I walked in a trance-like state, as did everyone. Did it all really happen? I walked to my apartment, opened the door and went straight to the TV. They played the crash again and again. You could see the people jumping out of windows of the building- crowds of people running through the streets in terror... I watched all night, and only stopped when trying to reach my boyfriend in CA. My calls wouldn't go through. They had limited the access so people who might be buried in the disaster could try to get through and let someone know they were alive... I was finally able to get in touch with my family. I didn't stay on long- I didn't want to tie up the line. They were able to let my boyfriend know I was o.k. I finally tried to sleep- every noise I heard made me jump. I felt so alone. I ached to hold my loved ones in my arms. You could hear the airplanes flying overhead- a nightwatch. The day after I painted pictures of what I was watching and then put them away.
