I was in Science class and all that I remember was that my teacher, Mrs.Thomas came running into the classroom crying. She then turned on the television. I saw two planes hit the the two towers. Tears began to run down my face as I thought about all of those human lives in the building. I saw people jumping to their deaths from top floors and others running back in the building to help. Yet, what stood out to me the most was that when the ash was settling on people, everyone looked the same. There were no African-Americans, Latinos, Caucasians, Native Americans, ect... instead, there was unison. People lending a helping hand, not just the firemen,policemen, or doctors, but everyday human beings. I thought about the children and parents that were left behind by the vitims of the attacks on the U.S. The terrorists may have thought they succeed in their mission, but what they didn't count on was the uniting of the people that live in the United States of America... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at my house when I first heard that terrorists had hijacked planes and flew them into the World Trade Centers. I was first surprised that someone could penetrate our defenses and shocked when I witnessed the towers crumble to the ground. I didn't know what to think. Was the world coming to an end? On my way to school, my dad turned on the radio and everyone was reporting on the World Trade Centers. There were reports of a third hijacked plane trying to kill the president but when they found out he wasn't at the White House, they crashed into the Pentagon. At school, most everyone was talking in amazement about the terrorist attacks. In most of my classes, we watched live coverage of the progress of firefighters, police men, and volunteers doing whatever they could to make the situation better for the injured and those in need. I remember people buying flags to hang on their car, shirts, hats and other patriotic symbols of the United States and New York City. Since 9-11-02, I have begun to not take things for granted and to cherish what I have, especially my family and friends. Hopefully, we'll capture every member of Al-Quida. That morning my mom woke me up for schhol like she did every day the year previous, but that day she urgently woke me up and told me to turn on the T.V. so I did. As the daughter and sister of policemen and the sister of a volunteer fireman, I recognized the danger when they first entered the first tower. When the towers fell, I knew that lives would be lost. All that died that day were heroes. All that survived that day are heroes. My heart stopped that day and my first thought was to call all of my family and make sure that everyone was okay even though we were all far removed from the sites of terrorism. I was driving to an interview for a new job when the first plane hit and I heard it on the radio. When the second plane hit I realized that the world had just changed. I did lose some friends from college but was unaffected in my close personal life. What has changed has been my spiritual life. I have faced three series of treatments for leukemia since 1998 but nothing had made me face my own mortality as much as the terrorist attacks on America. I had just started a new job, and the stress was already getting to me. As I went on my break at nine, a friend of mine came in and said that one of the Twin Towers just got hit by a jet, his wife had just called telling him. We all thought it was just a joke, or a small one person plane. As we left break, I walked out on the the sales floor and saw the two store managers looking at the tv, with their hands over their mouths. My stomach instantly hit the floor. As I approached the television, I saw the sihlouette of the second plane and commented on how low it was. It went behind the tower, and never came back out....just a ball of flames. I called my husband, who was still sleeping, crying and yelling at him to turn on the TV. We watched in horror as the Pentagon was reported hit. My brother is a Naval Officer, and had been known to be there weekly. Thank God, he called that night to tell us he was in Norfolk and not to worry about him. I got off of work and went home and held my son, who was seven months old. All I wanted in the world was to be with my family and cry. How did the day change me? I look at things differently now. I quit the job I found so "mundain", and went back to school. I tell my husband that I love him every time he leaves, whether we are in the middle of a heated argument or a wonderful day. I look at my beautiful son, who is now 18 months old, and I think about all of the hope his future holds. Our second son, Logan, is due this December 8th. Family has always been important to my husband and myself, but now it is so much more important. I noticed, on my computer, that there was something about an airplane that had hit the WTC. I guess I wasn't awake yet, because it didn't register as significant. I got to work and my boss asked if I knew what had happened. I told him that I'd heard something about it. He told me to turn on the TV in the store, because it was much bigger than I thought. By this time both towers had already collapsed. Initially, I couldn't comprehend was I was seeing. Then, as the images on TV were repeated, I began to understand the devastation of that day. I immediatly called my fiance and told her to turn on the TV, that the WTC was gone. Like me, she didn't understand what was happening. I continued to watch the TV, with no argument from my boss. For half that day, I tried to do my job, but I couldn't concentrate on anything but the events of that day. I found myself at the point of tears for most of the day. I somehow made it through the day, but found that I was uneasy driving near downtown with all the tall buildings around me. I also had near panic attacks driving through tunnels. I was also very uncomfortable with the eerie emptiness of the sky. We live in the landing path for SeaTac airport and are used to planes flying over. My fears have dissipated with time, but I still have difficulty bringing up the memories of that awful day. When I arrived ar work, one of my fellow associates who was sitting on a bench outside the store said "Have you heard?" I said "No, what are you talking about?" She said you better sit down and proceeded to tell me what was happening. The entire store was inside the Radio Grill watching the events unfolding on television. It was a very sad day for all of us. I turned to CNN and watched footage of a plane going head on into the tower, at this point the reporters only assumed this might have been an accident. Then the second plane hit. I't was hard to watch, I tried to explain to my friend the plane was not moving, it was crashing right into the building.The footage rolled over, and over, the same horrible sight. I was shocked and could not fathom what was soon to come. Reporters then started to guestion the possibility of a terriost attack. The horrifying guestion of what the country was watching, still not answered. Then, the Pentagon was attacked. I felt as if I was in a car accident and time was going slow. Reporters announced their was a plane in the air they could not account for. Our President was going to a secure secert location. I looked all around me. Pictures of my son and husband,the security of my home, the blue sky outside my window, the freedom I took for granted. WAR, my god, we are at WAR. I hopped out of the shower and heard a strange tone of voice emanating from the tv which immediately drew me to it...Before my eyes was the remnants of the first crash and there was no way I could accept the theory about an "accident" given the fact that it was a commercial airliner. I continued to remain in front of my television, dripping wet, and witnessed the second plane deliberately crash into the other Tower. I thought it was the end of life as we knew it and at that moment, it really was. I felt the impact just as surely as if I had been there. That may seem hard to believe for the thousands of people that really were physically present, but I hope they know our spirits were with them continuously throughout this nightmare. With shaking hands, I called my oldest son who lives in downtown Minneapolis and told him our country was under attack and to leave the downtown area immediately. I thought every commercial airliner was going to fall out of the sky that morning. I really did. I became a total media junkie after that insane and cold blooded attack on our country and our people. I felt compelled to watch the horror and suffering; feeling that I was supposed to live it as closely as possible with everyone who was personally affected. I felt it to be an obligation and my duty to witness every heartbreaking situation that I possibly could. Would that relieve anyone's burden at all? Of course not, I knew that, but I felt that we all had to suffer, we had to share the load because it was so hideously unbearable for the ones who were there and the ones who lost their beloveds. I have been on antidepressants for several months now, my grief and horror manifested in an ugly rash all over my arms that would not go away. I also painted the entire inside wall of my garage with our American Flag. I have purposely flown commercially since September 11th, 2001, and have made a personal vow to never be apathetic to any terroristic threat while flying or otherwise. I will go down fighting if I have to. I will not live in fear. I oppose terrorism and violence with every cell in my body, but to the terrorists of the world...we are aware and we are strong. Our country and people operate from a platform of love,terrorism is the opposite, it promotes hate and fear. It was a very morbid atmosphere. My parents were shocked, just like the rest of the nation. To get away from everything that was happening I decided to go to the park and mull things over. Everybody there was talking about what had happened. The perfect horror story had now been portrayed, not by Steven Spielberg, But by Osama bin Laden. That day did not get any better for me. I decided to ride my friends bike around the basketball courts. As I was riding it i hit a rock and flew over the handle bars. Imiediatley i knew that i had broke my wrist. The pain was something i had never felt before.I then did something very stupid. I knew that my wrist was broken but i decided i could still play a pickup basketball game with the people at the park. This is were i realized the seriouisness of the injury. I went home and my dad took me to the hospital. After wer got there we found out that my left radius had been shattered. I can clearley remember the melancholy seen of President Bush adressing the nation, While I was in a hospital bed. I was horified on that day. The biggest change September 11th has caused in my life is that i now have a greater apreciation of being an American. Before 9/11 I took living in this land of oppourtunity for granted. September 11th made me realize that the U.S is vulnerable to terrorist attacks. Before, I believed that this country was untouchable. The attacks that happened on September 11th caused me to be more aware of what is happening in the world now. I thought that America was king and that nobody would dare attack it. I think that the Al Queda network succeeded in there attacks. They succeeded in causing doubt and pain to the people. The succeeded in causing the stocks to fall. And most importantley they succeeded in uniting a country. Race, Religon, And politics didn't matter on that day. All that matters was that the United States was truely united. Tell us your story: Someone at work had a radio on at the time of the first airplane attack and came into our section because a co-worker had a small television at the office and we could view the live CNN broadcast. We were all in shock at what we saw and chills raced down my back and I felt sick to my stomach. I had always loved those buildings when visiting New York and couldn't believe someone would want to destroy them. In the beginning, that was what I thought about the most. But we were watching the review of the first attack and when we saw the second airplane approach and hit, and the subsequent collapse of the buildings, the horror of what had happened finally sank in. All thos people! We couldn't work anymore and after watching some more at the office, we all left. Some of my co-workers went out on Lake Erie fishing to try to forget the horror but I just went home and watched the unfolding story on CNN. We watched CNN for three days straight except when our 5 year old was in the room or we were sleeping. My husband and I visited New York the weekend of October 18 and made our way to the site of the tragedy. Even then, the buildings were still smoldering and the ash had yet to be cleaned from the streets totally. It was very disturbing and depressing. How could Human Beings plan and execute such an abomination? We stayed at the Waldorf and went to a Broadway Musical and that made us feel somewhat better, just helping the city to recover but I personally will never forget the feelings that I had that day and the days after the incident and I hope noone who experienced this history will ever forget. God Bless all the heros who took part in the rescues and the soldiers who made some of the perpetrators pay. I only hope that our government can fix enough of the internal issues to prevent this from happening again, here or anywhere in the world. There are still so many unanswered questions. We are left with the basic understanding that we will never know why exactly this has happened to us. Together we have survived, together we will move on however never forgetting what has frozen our minds and scarred our hearts. I knew from the moment I walked outside that God was with me, with us. I felt the cool breeze hit my facing sweeping my hair up and off my neck. I felt a slight relief come over me. It has been so long since the wind has been this gentle and yet so strong. The assembly in the stadium was remarkalble. America's flag flying proud in the air, the reassuring words of President Bush, and the steady beating of the snare drum; made last years tragedy so real. It felt good to cry tears of rememberance this morning. I feel so honored that our country has such brave men and women, who put their lives at risk to save others. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was sitting there studing for the upcoming test. that was the only thing i was worried about. All of a sudden a teacher who was crying ran by and told my teacher to turn on the tv. She said the world trade center was attacked. I clearly remeber the white expressiion on my teachers face as she turned on the tv to see the horrific site of the World Trade Center in smoke. All thoughts of my test vanished and thoughts of fear and astonishment entered my mind. How could this happen?! Why would this happen?! WHAT HAPPENED??!! I was stunned by it all. Throughout morning classes the tv was left on. Teachers tried to go on eith the normal schedule but evidentially everyones' attention was on what was happening in Ney York. As news of the other planes hitting came, tears broke out in class. It was an awful gloomy day. The most vivid image in my mind was in 3rd period. The horror of the first tower crumpling. Time stopped as the tower slowly crumpled to the ground. I wasn't sure if time would ever start up agian. Throughout the day anguish turned to fear, fear turned to rage. Why would anyone want to so this? Who would send people in a plane to take their life and the lives of many innocents? As new details came into light, i was enraged by seeing the people of Alfganitstan cheering, celebrating in the streets over the tragedy in America. The brave fireman, risking their lives some giving them up, to save the lives of innocents in the buildings. The inages of seeing people actually dive out of the towers windows out of desparation. And the fact that these people condome this is astonishing to me. Seeing this onl stenghthed me. Seeing the faces of those celebrating, only made me wioe the tears from my face. I was not going to give them the satisfaction of my suffering and fear. I knew that the reason why they took such drastic measures was because they envied us. They envied our country, our unity, our freedoms. I was going to stand up and be proud. Everywhere people stood up with new courage and new feeling of nationalism. We were not going to stand for this. We were not going to let this destroy our country. United we stand. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The first thing i remember from the morning of the 11th is sitting in my 5/6 class Which was freshman social studies. I don't remember what we were studing that and frankly I could care less. I remember sitting there and the phone on the wall ringing. Which almost always meant some one was getting called down to the office. An event that affects only one persons life. Little did I know that phone call would be engraved into my mind. Anyway that call was the school secretary calling my teacher that the World Trade Center buildings had been bombed. We turned the tv one right away. I can't remember if we turned it on before or after the second plane hit but i remember being in total dismay seeing the smoke coming from the top of the buildings. I also remember the conversation skirting around about what happened and how the buildings got bombed. My initial thought was some milatary had gotten pissed at us and dropped an actual bomb onto the buildings but before i had a chance to see video of the planes hitting the buildings the bell rang and it was off to period 7/8. When I got to the next period i wondered why the tv was not on? Had Mr. Leonard heard about the bombings or did he just not care? It turned out he didn't have a coaxial cable to hook the tv up to the wall. Everyone in the class was willing to hunt one down so we could watch the broadcast of the WTC stuff going on. This is where i have to confess that at the moment i volutered to go look for a spare cable i was more woried about gettin out of work then what was going on in New York at that time. Weel Mr. Leonard wouldn't let us look for a cable and we ended up doing work that day. In the next class period i had spanish. The teacher was Mr. Leonards wife she did have a working tv. When i walked in the room i looked at the tv and that is where for the first time i saw video of the planes hitting the towers. I then learned that during the period before the towers had also fallen. The full impact of this didn't really hit me till the next day. During marching band the next day our director took us out onto our practice field. Our band director called us together on the 50 yard line and told us that this was one of those moments we would remember for the rest of our lives. He told us to look up at the sky. It was a cloudless day and nothing was in the sky because of the grounding of the planes the day before. It was so quite that it was a little scary you could here even the slitests sound. I was on my way to 2nd hour when a friend came up to me and told me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. It's a little pathetic- but at that time, I didn't even know what the World Trade Center was. I believe I responded with a, "Oh no way!" and went about my way. Well a few minutes later, the live coverage was on every t.v. in the building. Kids were walking through the halls crying, some people called their parents to go home, and the worst thing--a mother came into the school crying to get her daughter saying that their father, who was in NYC for buisiness, had a meeting that morning in the World Trade Center. That's when I began to realize how serious this was. I became afraid for my father, who works Downtown Chicago. Once the news came that another plane had hit the Pentagon, I grew scared for my Aunt who I knew was flying into Dulles Airport in D.C. that morning. I couldn't believe what was happening, and all I wanted to do was go home and see my family. When I did get home that night, I was relieved to see that my dad had stayed home from work that morning, and that both my parents were safe. My sister was away at college and we got in contact with her to be sure she was safe. However- nobody could contact my aunt. The next few hours were horrible...my mom and I went out to the local grocery store and bought gallons of water because we didn't know what to expect, and we checked our cell phones every 30 seconds to see if someone had called with news of our Aunt. We finally got ahold of her that evening, and she told us that she was pretty much stuck in a hotel in Downtown D.C.- that she didn't even want to go onto the streets because it was so chaotic down there. I've never been happier to know that every member of my family was safe and well. That night I just sat up forever crying, and listening to the rest of my family cry...there are no words. I know I'm only 16 and have alot to learn in life- but I do know that Tuesday, September 11th is a day that I will never forget. Life was great for me - I was passing my classes, living in the dorms 40 something miles away from my parents and had the best time just hanging with my friends. I woke up that morning wanting to just pull the covers back over my head and pretend like that sun had not even come up yet. (I'm not a morning person-can you tell?) That had become my morning ritual - but like always - class awaited. I remember walking down the hall of the dorm and stopping at my dorm mothers door to tell her to have a great day. She was watching some news channel and it showed one of the twin towers on fire. My dorm mother said that a plane had flown into it, I was in shock. That's when we saw the second plane fly into the second tower..I screamed and my dorm mother did to. More girls had come out of their rooms and ran down the hall to see what was going on. Why we were screaming and why I had tears rolling down my cheeks. When the news reporters said the attacks were terrorist related, my dorm mom who is a very christian woman and prayed with me every night, said some things I never in my life thought I would hear from her. I was in shock; at her attitude but more at what had happened. I walked across campus confused. I couldn't understand - why would anyone do something so hateful. All of those people, the families and friends. Time stood still or flew by - it just didn't seem to matter right then. I felt helpless. I wanted to be there, to help somehow. I just didn't know how. What I really wanted was for someone to wake me up-to tell me it was only a nightmare. When I got to class, my always on time professor was not on time. He walked into class looking as though he had walked through hell to get there. He sat down on the stool behind his podium and told us and this I will never forget..."You probably all know what is going on. A very close friend of mine works in the WTC on the top floors. The building that he works in just collapsed and no one has heard from him. I don't want to be here today so class is dismissed." He stood up and walked out. My cell phone started ringing which shook us young adults out of a trance. I answered the phone to hear someone crying on the other end - I was almost in tears but hearing someone else cry pushed me closer to the edge. It was my cousin Jess. I was having a hard time understanding her but I finally got it. She was letting me know that Chase, the cousin that everyone thought was my twin and was my best friend, was supposed to be on the plane that crashed into the WTC and no one had heard from him. What happened next was somewhat hazy - when she told me I felt as if I couldn't breath, I collapsed on the floor, I had no legs, no logical thought. I was screaming 'NO' over and over and crying. I told her she was lying. But I knew it was true.. he had left me a voicemail and told me he was taking a trip and that he would call me when he got back. Some friends and people that I didn't know helped me get back to my dorm where my dorm sisters took care of me. They sat with me in my dorm room and tried to comfort me while we watched everything on t.v. I cried all day, my cousin, my best friend was gone. Time didn't matter, I didn't care. I thought of all the kids who lost their mommies and daddies, cousins who lost cousins, and siblings whose other siblings won't be coming home for Thanksgiving or Christmas anymore. My professor looked like he had walked through hell and now I was following him walking through the same hell and knowing that we weren't alone didn't help. I cried not just for me and my family, I cried for all the families, friends, and any American dead or alive. But I was one of the lucky ones. That afternoon, I got a call from my cousin, not just a cousin but Chase.. my twin cousin.. he had switched his flights and didn't get on the plane. I cried then because I was so glad he was still alive. He was crying to... he felt guitly because he felt as if he was supposed to be on that flight, he felt guilty because he was glad he was alive. I felt guilty because I was glad that he was alive. My dad came and picked me up after I heard from Chase. He told me there was probably going to be a war and said that it wasn't over. He was right, my cousin Bray is in the Navy, and was on one of the first ships to reach Afghanistan. The nightmare wasn't over. I spent that night with my ENTIRE family. Praying and cryng. That day brought us closer. I still don't understand why that day ever had to happen and I will never say that I'm glad it did. I always told my little sister that something good always happens after something bad. There are so many words to describe what 9-11 was.. a tragedy, stupidity, bad, horrible, sad, traumatizing, ... but it made Americans unite. On that day, a persons color didn't matter, we were all one color. A persons beliefs didn't matter, we all believed the same thing. No one had different thoughts - Americans as a group felt the confusion, the shock, the trauma, and the loss. WE ALL felt the anger, the hate, the need for revenge. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. I will stand behind our leader, The President. And when is the killing going to end? Peace is to easy and in many ways we feel peace and contentment in our lives - but there will always be the one person in the world who gaines power and feels greed, whose heart will fill with anger and hatred like a jealous child and who will seek to do harm. But on September 11th, 2001, through the horror and devastating events, the result was a united front, billions of independent hearts and souls becoming one, a nation together fighting for justice. Tell us your story: Five years ago, after being born and raised in NJ,I moved with my mother to North Carolina from our old home in Maplewood, NJ (which is just across the river from New York). My dad, however, continued to live in New Jersey (along with most of my relatives) and work in New York City. I flew into Newark Airport once every month to see him. I had just returned from a visit with my dad and our usual trip to the city... I remember it well. That morning I was drawing sketches in my 10th grade art class at my high school. The principal came on the intercom and announced that a plane had just hit the first world trade center tower. Immediately thoughts of my family ran through my head. I thought of any of my relatives that might have worked in the twin towers. I thought of all those times I had been to the world trade center and how I was in New York City only like a week before. It was unbelievable. Our teacher turned on the T.V. and the images on the screen horrified me. I broke down crying in my classroom. I remembered that two of my cousins worked in the trade center and that my dad was probably getting off of work at that very moment. I was terrified because I did not know what was going on. I was scared of the thought of not knowing their fate. The possibilty of them being in those buildings frightened me. I ran out of the classroom shaking and crying and trying to understand how this could happen. When I returned to the room, all my classmates were staring at me. They could not understand why I was so emotional about this. They did not know what was going through my head. When I would try to explain, I would start sobbing so much that my words were not easily understood. After I calmed down a bit, I asked my teacher if I could go to the office to contact someone, anyone who could put my fears to rest. But, she would not let me. She said that there would probably be a lot of students down there trying to contact their parents. This upset me so much. I told her I was going to the bathroom but instead I escaped to the main office. On my way, a counselor stopped me and ask if I was alright. I hesitated and did not know what exactly to say. I thought to myself, "no! I am not okay...I am terrified! Half, if not all, of my family lives in New Jersey and works in NYC! I do not even know where they are!" Instead of expressing these feelings, I simply answered yes and she then took me to the guidance office anyway. There a counselor took me outside to use her cell phone to call my dad. All the lines directed to New Jersey were busy. I could not get in touch with anyone. The rest of the school day I tried to get my mind off of it. Friends tried to comfort me but I still felt upset. When I got home after school that day, I called my dad. I was relieved to find him at home. He had been asleep in his house in New Jersey all along. He was let off early from his night shift at the paper he worked at. He did not even know of the events until a few minutes before I had called him. A few minutes later, I realized that my mom was in China and that she probably would not be able to call home or even get home for a long time. I then called my grandparents and they told me that everyone from my dad's side of the family was accounted for. Afterwards I talked with my other Grandma. She informed me that one of my cousins who worked in the trade center was in a meeting in another building and she was not in her office at all that day. She also told me that my other cousin was fine and he had gotten out of the trade center alright. It was hard to hear her say that she had never experienced, in all of her 80 years on this earth, anything like this before. She did not know how anybody could do anything of this magnitude. I then learned, from my step-dad, that my mom would be stuck in China for at least another week. I knew she would be apprehensive about flying home and I was worried about her getting on a plane. The rest of the day was as morbid as can be. I watched these intense events play out on the T.V. screen. I felt so depressed that I refused to do anything all night. Only being 15 years old at the time,it was, and still is, hard to comprehend. The days following the attacks, I did everything that a person of my age could do to help out. A few months later, I visited the site. It was horrible and made me want to throw up. But I did not. I sucked it up and did what I had to do. The pain was still there and very real. I will never forget that fateful day. I will never forget the emotions I felt. I never want to have to experience those feelings every again. The stories that I have heard from everyone have really affected me. My dad told me stories of friends who had talked to the people on the phone when the buildings were getting hit. The things that these people saw were real and unbelievable to hear about. Their reflections still bring tears to my eyes. I hope that people will take my story and use it to see what the day was like for a teenager. I might have not been there but my heart was there and I was deeply affected by the events. And I thank God that everyone in my family was save from harm that day. I feel for those who were not so lucky. I didnt know the know how bad the destruction was. I was thinking "Oh a plane crashed in New York". I just went on with the rest of my work. I didnt know they were terrorist attacks. I only thyought that about one hundred people had died. When I got home from school and saw the news, I was shocked. I saw i video from school of when the first tower fell, and I finally realized how bad things really were. It was like the whole world stopped. All os the sports games were cancelled. Businesses were closed. Everyone stoped what they were doing. For the next few days, I saw that the number of people that died was steadilly rising. I couldnt beleive how man people had died. I felt lucky because I didn't lose anyone i didnt know. My life has changed greatly because of September eleventh. I aprriciate my family and friends more now. I dont take anything for ganted. People are much more concientious. Airports have much more security now. People are traveling less and driving instead fo flying. People became afraid, worrying that their would be more attacks. Also my life has changed because I am grateful i am sill alive. I think that all the innocent people who dies should be remembered because they had their lives unfairly taken away from them. They should be remembered because they were all like us. I also think that everyone should remember the good that came out of it. All the nation was united, families grew closer and everyone appreciated what they had. This made evryone forget their differences and remember that they are all Americans. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: SEPTEMBER 11TH , 2001 STARTED OUT AS ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY, EXCEPT THAT IT WAS MY 40TH BIRTHDAY !!! UGHHH . I THOUGHT THAT WAS GOING TO BE TRAUMATIC ... SFTER WHAT HAPPENED THAT DAY , 40 IS A PIECE OF CAKE . I REMEMBER ONE OF MY COWORKERS COMING UP TO ME A LITTLE AFTER 9:00 AM , AND TELLING ME THAT MY BIRTHDAY HAD A SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE NOW ~~~ THAT A PLANE HAD HIT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER . I LOOKED AT HIM AND JUST KIND OF LAUGHED, TOLD HIM WHAT AN IDIOT HE WAS AND THAT THAT WAS YEARS AGO, AND IT WAS NOT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER, BUT THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING (ALSO KIND OF JOKING WITH HIM THAT MAYBE HE WAS MIXED UP WITH THE MOVIE OF KING KONG AND FAYE WRAY ! A LITTLE WHILE LATER , HE COMES UP TO ME AGAIN, AND SAYS NOW A SECOND PLANE HAS JUST HIT THE OTHER TOWER . WELL, NOW IT HIT ME ... THIS WAS NOT A MISTAKE ON HIS PART , AND THIS WAS NO JOKE . I FELT MY WORLD CRUMBLE AS IF I WAS IN ONE OF THOSE BUILDINGS . YOU SEE, I WAS IN NEW YORK THE NIGHT BEFORE , DELIVERING A YACHT ON THE HUDSON RIVER . I WILL NEVER FORGET THE 10th EITHER AS IT WAS ONE OF THE STRANGEST DAYS WEATHER WISE I WILL EVER SEE. WE ( MY BOYFRIEND AND I ) HAD LEFT NORWALK COVE MARINA WITH A 36 FOOT YACHT, AND THE WEATHER WAS GEORGOUS, BUT VERY HOT AND HUMID . WITHIN MINUTES , THE SKY GREW THAT QUEER GREENISH - ORANGE COLOR THAT YOU ASSOCIATE WITH SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS . THEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE , AND IT TURNED QUITE NASTY OUT ON LONG ISLAND SOUND !!! I EVEN SUGGESTED PUTTING OFF THE TRIP FOR THE NEXT DAY , BUT WE STUCK IT OUT AND MADE IT THRU THE SOUND, THE EAST AND THE HARLEM RIVERS . WE TIED THE BOAT UP AT VAN KYLLS MARINA AND HAD TO STAY ON IT FOR SEVERAL HOURS TO AVOID BEING HIT BY LIGHTENING . I WILL NEVER FORGET THOSE THUNDERSTORMS ROLLING OFF THE PALLISADES THAT NIGHT .LOOKING DOWNTOWN AT THE TWINS, IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT ~~~ ALL ILLUMINATED BY THE LIGHTENING BOLTS . I WAS TAKING PICTURES OF THIS, WHEN I SAID TO MYSELF, STOP WASTING FILM . THE PICTURES PROBABLY WON'T COME OUT VERY GOOD ANYWAYS, AND YOU CAN ALWAYS TAKE A BETTER ONE NEXT TIME ~~~ WELL THERE NEVER WAS A NEXT TIME ! THE WEATHER THAT DAY / NIGHT ( THE 10th ) AND THE EVENTS THAT HAPPENED THE NEXT DAY HAVE MADE A BELIEVER OUT OF ME . YOU NEVRE KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN, SO ENJOY EVERY DAY AS IF IT WAS YOUR LAST , BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS IN STORE FOR YOU !!!( BY THE WAY, THOSE PICTURES THAT NIGHT DID NOT COME OUT, BUT I HAVE SEVERAL OTHER VERY GOOD PICTURES OF THE TWIN TOWERS THAT I TOOK FROM THAT BOAT AND SEVERAL OTHERS THAT I CREWED ON OVER THE YEARS ) MAY GOD BLESS ALL THE POOR SOULS THAT PERISHED ON THAT HORRIBLE DAY - MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU EVERY DAY AND ESPECIALLY EVERY BIRTHDAY FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE !!!
