Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: As usual, I was listening to IMUS In The Morning on WFAN. I prefer the feed from his New York station over his local affiliate. As I was driving south through Windsor, CT I heard Imus say something about a plane hitting the World Trade Towers. Having vacationed in New York and having visited the WTC with my husband and two children just the month before, my blood immediately ran cold with the "what if" scenario that ran through my mind. Mr. Imus introduced regular contibutor Warner Wolf to offer comments on what he had seen and heard. At that point, I thought it was just one of his "bits", this could not really be true - then, quickly, I realized it was real. Still, it had to be an accident. At that point I had arrived at the Federal Court House building in Hartford to go into my meeting. I said good morning to the Federal Marshals and told them the news that I had just heard. This was the first that they had heard of it. Still, I dismissed it as an accident. Since most people were already at the meeting location, I shared the news I had heard, no one yet knew the gravity of the situation. After my meeting was concluded, I called my mother's travel agency from a hallway pay phone to find out if she had heard the news, approximately 1 hour had passed. As I spoke with one of her agents, Barbara Mango, Barbara was extremely aggitated about what was still not known to be an attack. Barbara narrated the news report she was watching, as I spoke with Barb, the second plane hit the second tower, the reaction that Barb had was, and still is, indescribable. It was clear now that our country was under some sort of attack. I got sick to my stomach, hung up the phone and went to my car, pausing only moments to have a parting conversation with the Marshals about the event apparently unfolding that day. The drive home seemed to take an eternity. My son was in school and my daughter was with her nanny playing with some friends. When I got home I called our nanny to tell her I would pick up my daughter early, but first, I wanted to watch the news to get updated before the kids came home, those were images I could not bear to have them watch. It was at that time that the first tower fell. My first thought was about my high school friend Christopher Blackwell. I knew, just knew without any confirmation at that very moment that Chris was not only there, but was in the Tower when it fell. Chris was already decorated for his valor by the New York City Fire Department. Even if it was not his shift, nothing would have kept him from being one of the first ones in to rescue the innocense. How right I was. Chris was a member of heroic Rescue 3. I could not watch any more. I left the house, picked up my daughter, then my son at school. It was difficult not turning on the television to watch the updates as they came in, but those were images I did no want my children to see, not just yet. I sat down with paper and crayons and told my children the news of the towers falling. We got out our vacation photos and turned to the pages with us at the top of the Twin Towers. I told them that they are not there anymore, that someone had knocked them down. Then I let them watch one sequency of news footage and turned off the TV. The children spent the rest of the day drawing pictures, some quite profound. I will save those pictures always. Tell us your story: Although I was "safe" in my home on that deeply sorrowful day, I was still affected on not a physical level but a emotional and spiritual level...disbelief then shock then a mixture of fear, helplessness, compassion, confusion, and hopelessness flooded my being. What was next? And on this anniversary, some of the same feelings have resurfaced as though a year has not gone by; confusion being the greatest. How can we as human beings not recognize our connectedness on a daily, hourly, etc. basis...without a tragedy to thrust us into this recognition? How long will we go on without compassion for each other whether we are burning in buildings or parentless or hungry? When will we band together on a regular basis to give, to care for, and to love one another regardless of race, creed, or financial status? When will there be true equality, peace, and harmony amongst us? We are ONE people in a myriad of shapes and colors. We are ONE family, all children of God, brothers and sisters under ONE love. My heart aches to see the world going in the direction in which it is going. Retaliation, selfishness, intolerance, and thus self-destruction. Around the world, we die every day. Everytime some is murdered or starves to death, though that whole individuals dies..rings of death expand touching each one of us like a pebble dropped in a pond. What can we do to shift our current way of living other than by destroying ourselves? Food for thought: Love, too, multiples and touches many when expressed by just one individual. I have expressed not only my confusion but my feelings of hopelessness. But, everytime I awake and see the sun rise or hear of a baby being born...my hope is restored because that means that God still is willing to renew the opportunity for us. Fear is the absence if the presence of God..May God be with us all every minutes, hour, day or the year. Tell us your story: I was in 4th period 11th grade American History class when my teacher went into the hall to talk to one of our security guards. He came back in and told us about the plane hitting the WTC. We thought it was an acident then we turned on the TV and watched as the 2nd plane hit. We all watched TV the rest of the day in our classes and alot of kids went home after we heard about the Pentagon. Tell us your story: We had just gotten done with Primetime (the first twenty minutes of the day) when I got to my homeroom, a kid named Alex told me that there were planes flying into the buildings! And everybody was freaked out. As soon as the teacher, Mrs. Lee turned on the t.v. everybody watched in horror as the first plane struck the first tower. Later I had learned that my friend had said that that day couldn't get any worse. All we had for homework for the rest of the week was to watch the news. That day, we all watched the news in every class that we went to, even gym. I live on the other side of the dividing road that is Arlington, TX. On the morning of September 11th I arrived at school at about 7:00 a.m. I don't watch televison or listen to radio once I get to school, so I would not have any idea of the events that were about to unfold as they happened. When the bell rang at 8:30 a.m. one of my students told me that they had heard on the radio on their way to school that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I look at the child and said "sure it did, now go sit down". I simply did not believe it! A little while later my husband called my classroom and told that two planes had hit the World Trade center and that the Pentagon had now also been hit. I was in disbelief. We were under attack! I remained calm and said nothing to the children. I did not know how I would explain this to them. They viewed their world, the U.S. as safe. When the children went to their Gym class I turned on the T.V. and saw the horror of the World trade center. I actually saw footage of people leaping out of the buildings! It was horrific. Soon, parents started to arrive to pick up their kids. The school board decided not to cancel classes, but parents could go and get their children. This posed a problem, as I had not wanted to explain this to my class. I felt that it was best to let their parents try to explain such a difficult catastrophe. However, as the parents of some of the children arrived, this upset those who were left behind so much that we spent the rest of the day discussing what was going on. I assured them that they were safe,and one boy said "I am sure that all of those people who just went to work today or got the planes thought that they were safe too." He was so right. This event redefines our images of safety. America was under attack from a cowardly enemy. The next day (September 12, 2001) I gave each child a piece of paper and an envelope and had them write about who they were on this day and time and about their feelings of the previous days events. Once they were finished they each sealed their letter in the envelope and wrote on the outside of it to open it in twenty years. It will be a valuable look at this event throught eyes of a child. We will no longer ever be that innocent again. God bless America and those who have given their lives so that our great Nation may live! While I was waiting on them I layed on my couch with the television on and fell asleep. I was having an odd dream that I was on a talk show like Jerry Springer with one of my old bosses. I remeber I wasn't paying much attention to the host of the show and was playing with the shoe strings on my shoe. The host of the show was saying "Why would anyone want to attack the World Trade Center" I heard my dog bark at the door so I woke up to let them in. As I was walking to the door I was remembering my dream and thinking how strange it was. I let the dogs in, turned around to walk back to the couch and heard the reporter on t.v. say "It's been confirmed that it was a plane that hit the WTC" I sat down and started watching. To my horror, within seconds of focusing on the television the second plane hit while I was watching live! I immediately called my husband at work but he was not there. I told his employees to turn on a radio or t.v. to know what was going on. I then called my Mom in Louisiana to see if she was seeing the same thing I was. Of course she was and the whole reality of the situation hit me and I became sick to my stomach. I spent the entire day in front of the television with my dogs next to me on the couch, calling friends and loved ones. When my husband finally got home I hugged him and we both cried. I got up and got dressed, finished getting ready and then my sister was in the car waiting for me. We left for school at around 7:30am and stopped at the store first to get our usual breakfast sandwiches. When I got to school it was like any other day I talked in the hall with all my friends about the latest gossip. Then when the warning bell rang Jill, Kristen and I walked my friend Jessica to her class like we do every morning. After that Kristen and I went to our first period class, which is gym so were allowed to be a little late. We hung out in the hall for a couple more minutes. Gym class is pretty cool for us because our teacher lets us do pretty much whatever we want to do. That day we played volleyball, which is cool because Kristen and I are really good at it. Also, in our class we have a lot of people play and its really fun. After gym, I went to my second period class, which is Global. In my 9th grade Global class, we had just started learning about the Taliban and life in Afghanistan. All of a sudden Mr. Upton another global teacher came running in our classroom and was telling us to hurry up and turn on the television. So my teacher Mrs. Capen turned on the television and we all saw the twin towers. One of them was on fire and people everywhere were yelling and running around panic stricken. As we were all watching, all of a sudden, another plane came flying around and crashed right into the other tower. We all sat there staring at the television in amazement and shock not knowing what was happening. At first I thought that our teacher Mrs. Capen was playing a big trick on us because we had just started learning about the Taliban, terrorism and Osama Bin Laden. I realized after a minute when everyone was freaking out that it was not a joke and that it was for real. I was in complete shock and did not know what to think. We saw people everywhere running around screaming. Little fires and explosions were happening everywhere. Everyone was running and ducking from all the things flying in the air even the reporters were ducking behind cars. The rest of the day was very hectic; televisions were on in every classroom. Walking down the halls all you could hear were the televisions on the news and people talking about the Twin Towers and the crash. Everyone was in complete shock. In every class we would just watch the news. No one was teaching a normal class. There were rumors going around that we were going to be sent home because we have a power plant right next to us that power generates a lot for New York City, we were worried that they might try to blow the power plant up. The principle kept us in school, everyone even the teachers had to leave right at 2:18 though. Everything was canceled sports, clubs, and any meetings that day. All the talk in lunch was about what was happening. Even the televisions in the lunchroom were all on. Everyone in lunch was worried about many different things. My one friend Jade was worried because her dad works in the power plant and it was in threat of getting bombed or hit so everyone was freaking out and very worried. All of us play sports and all of our games were canceled. We had a big volley ball game that day and my friends had a big field hockey game and they all had to be rescheduled for a new day because we all had to go home. When I got home all the televisions in the house were on the new and that is all we watched all night. This experience for me was strange; I mean you always hear about this stuff happening in other countries I never thought something like this would happen here. I also never thought it would happen during my lifetime, but I knew it could and it did. We had been doing research for a paper and were on the computers and internet. I was sitting next to one of my friends who was talkin through AOL Instant Messenger to a teacher working at the tech office at our elementary school. The teacher sent a message that the World Trade Center buildings had been hit by a plane. At first it was hard to believe and I thought that it must have been a small single engine plane that had gone out of control. We began searching the internet for instant news and information. After a few minutes we found some news info and pictures of the planes flying towards the towers. At this moment I was suprised to see that it was actually a large passenger plane. We said something to our teacher and went into the office where there was a television and we turned on the news, and watched it until the end of class. This was the main topic at our school for the rest of our day, and I watched it on the news all night. These whole events come as a real shock to me because I have visited New York for the past three summers. During the first two years the World Trade Centers were always a nice resting spot for us. We would sit between the towers near the fountain and admire the view. Jus las week we again visited New York City and visited Groundzero. It was a very emotional experience. The cross made from the steel beam stands as a reminder to all of this horrific and tragic event and is symbolic of all the lives lost. The whole area had been cleaned up and it just looked like a large construction site. They had begun rebuilding one of the underground tunnels, but besides that it looked just like a 60 foot deep hole in the ground. I was deeply moved by the shrine to those who lost their lives that was set up in the churchyard nearby. I am sure that I will always remember the events of 9/11, but I will never ever understand them. Tell us your story: At approximately 9:30am on Sept. 11, 2001, the assistant principal made a rare all call announcement to turn CNN on in our classrooms. As I rushed to turn on the television, I was wondering what could possibly be happening that would warrent this announcement. I soon found myself dumbstruck with what I saw. What a struggle it was to maintain my composure in front of my classroom of disbelieving students. One student spoke out and broke the silence, "This is just a movie, right Ms. Jurk?" "I wish it were Michael." He was the one child able to ask what we all were hoping was true. He didn't seem to believe me when I told him that what he was watching was real and history in the making. For the next half hour, my students and I watched, horrified, as the scenes of the two planes hitting the World Trade Center. When the bell rang and my students moved on to their next class, I rushed to the office to get permission to make the long distance calls I needed to make to find out if my friends and family were a part of attack on the Pentagon. There are no words to express how I felt when I found out my loved ones were safe and sound. And then, the towers fell. What an awesome sight. Two skyscrapers, 110 stories fell. I could only imagine what it was like to be there. I fell into a chair completely at a loss. I had no idea what to do or say, except to say a prayer for those who had lost their lives and for those who were beginning a LONG journey to search, rescue, and clean up the mess of some fanatical lunatics. Throughout the rest of the day, my students and I continued to watch CNN. There I sat, a 25 year old, middle school special education teacher, dumbstruck again at how difficult it was to understand what was happening. Who were these people flying airplanes into our lives? Who would give up their own life to take so many innocent lives? Who could take these lives and leave so many others behind alone and confused? While these questions have been answered over the last year, I still struggle to understand how their minds could have become so warped that they felt it necessary to kill so many innocent people. As an adolescent, when a voice on our huge old radio announced that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor, I immediately went outside and looked up at the sky afraid that I would see Japanese bombers. I did not know what to expect. On Sept 11, 2001 my husband left St. Louis early to join his sons for their annual fishing trip and the house was quiet. I took my morning cup of tea into the living room and turned on the TV. An excited, tense voice told me that a plane had hit one of the WTC towers. Recalling that a plane had accidentally flown into the Empire State building years ago, I assumed it was anoher accident and wondered how firefighters would be able to deal with a fire in such a tall building. Then I saw a plane going into the other tower and erupting in a fireball. I realized that this was no accident. Panicky screams of those near the cameraman filled my quiet house and I felt as many Americans did that day--this can't be happening. My brain went numb and gave me no idea of what was going on--it was frozen. I sat on the couch in silence as the first tower collapsed and screaming people pursued by clouds of smoke ran for their lives. When the second tower went down I could hear voices crying "Oh my God." More people running, trying to breathe in the choking clouds of smoke and debris. They looked ghostly as they emerged covered with grey ash. My first reaction was to call my husband to the TV, forgetting that he was on the road. I spent the rest of the day glued to the screen as images of planes hitting the towers and the towers coming down were shown over and over. It was very hard to be alone with no one to share my confusion and fear. That evening I phoned one of my sons who left the other fishermen early and was home in Quincy, Illinois. I asked questions--what was happening, what was going on? His voice was tense as he answered that he had no answers. Because he is military I assumed he could interpret better than I what was unfolding. Because he is military he knew we were in for terrible trouble and just didn't want to handle questions then. So I hung up and spent the next few days watching TV and trying to understand the implications of this attack. No, on September 11, 2001 I didn't go out and scan the skies for bombers as I did in 1941. As the days passed, my brain finally processed the fact that we were at war; a new, unknown kind of war that left me with the same fear that I had as a child--what is going to happen? We were hearing the radio and the music stop and all we heard was something was going on. When I heard them mention the World Trade Center I thought they were reporting something about the 1993 moment, but as I kept listening it became clear that something unthinkable had just happened. I got on the bus and went to school. I hung out with friends in my first and second class. In the middle of third period is when I found out about the terrorist attacks. I left class to get a drink and a teacher was walking down the hall and saying something. At first I thought he was talking to me, so I asked him what he said. He told me to go and tell my teacher to turn it on CNN. So I hurried back to my class and told Mrs. Lamb to turn on the TV. As soon as we turned it on they showed the first tower in flames. I was very confused. I had no idea what was going on, to be honest I was a little scared to know what was going on. I wasn't sure I wanted to know. Then a newscaster came across the screen and said that a plane had flown into the tower. After hearing this, the first thing that popped into my head was the bombing in the twin towers in 1993. When class was over everyone in the halls were talking about it. I stepped into fourth period class and it was so quiet, which is very unusual for my art class. We sat there the whole time with our noses stuck to the TV. It was so sad. By this time the other plane hit the second tower. When the towers started to collapse I started to get teary. I still couldn't believe this was happening. I thought it was just a really bad dream. Then later on I heard that a plane hit the Pentagon and then one crashed in Somerset, PA. The plane that crashed in Somerset, PA from what I heard was supposed to come to Somerset, NY. It was suppose to hit our power plant, AES. During the next few days of school we watched over a nd over again the devastating disaster. Each time I watched it made me think to myself, wow what if that plane had hit our power plant? What would have happened to us? It was so important to watch the news every night and see what was go ing on and how people had reacted to all this. It still amazes me that someone can be so cruel and hurtful. After the devastating disaster, everyone, including me was very sad and had hopes on pay back for Osama bid Laden. This tragedy influenced people and we know that America became united once again. We pulled through it and now are trying to move because everyone is "PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!" I returned to my car with my 2 week old baby whom I was taking to work with me that day. When getting in the car at a few minutes after 9:00 am I heard the reports on the radio of a a plane hitting tower 1. You see, I am one of those emotional people that cry at the drop of a hat. Yet somehow during the days and weeks and months that followed the tragedies of September 11th last year, I didn't cry; at least not very much. Not the buckets worth that I would have expected from myself. In some ways I couldn't. I was for all intents and purposes numb. I felt like that sense of safety we all (us Americans) took for granted was gone. Some things would never be the same again. Living near DC, people talk about not having to worry about how to go on after World War III or a nuclear attack, because we would be killed in the first strikes. That's what 9/11 felt like. I was asleep when my phone rang around 9am. It was my dad calling to see what I was doing and if I had heard the news. He told me about the plane hitting the World Trade Center. I turned on the news and pretty much kept it on for the next several days. I was watching the TV when the second plane hit the other tower. I was watching the TV when I heard a sonic boom and felt as my house shook and as I learned that a plane had hit the Pentagon. I was watching TV as the first tower collapsed and then the second. It all seemed surreal, like a movie. I tried calling my two sisters to let them know I was OK. I talked briefly to my one sister, who was living in Falls Church at the time, but only got the others voicemail. Since she was away, attending the University of Delaware and was probably in class, I wanted her to know that we were all ok. But were we all ok? I finally talked with my mother. Her office at the time was in Rosslyn and they were all told to go home, but traffic was horribly backed up, because all government agencies in DC were also being told to close. What was a normal 10-15 minute drive took her nearly an hour that day. There was one last person that I was worried about. My friend Dave has a framing shop on Columbia Pike, just down from the Pentagon. Since he is hearing impaired and does not communicate using the phone, calling him was out of the question. Because of the mass exodus from DC, I knew driving would be nearly impossible and decided to head out on foot. Both to see if he was ok, and also to get a look at the Pentagon. I'm not quite sure what it is that draws us to things...why people must look at accidents as they drive by...I just had to know. It took me nearly an hour to walk that mile, in large part because of the cars that were everywhere and the roads that the police had already begun to block off. When I reached the shop, I discovered a closed sign, so I figured Dave was ok and that he had headed home for the day. At that point, I continued down Columbia Pike towards the Pentagon. Smoke filled the air, thick balls of black and grey. I passed many Pentagon employees walking in the other direction. Walking away and trying to get home to loved ones. As I later learned, since the entire site had been declared a crime scene, they were forced to leave their cars there and find other means of transportation. And if they took the metro, then they had to walk to another location since the Pentagon stop was closed. It was to be the beginning of many days of no metro trains or buses stopping at the Pentagon. What I saw when I reached the end of the street will stick in my minds eye forever. The actual site with my own eyes was 1000x more vivid than any of the images I saw on TV. Which images are from that moment and which are from the countless times I would drive by for the next few days and weeks are somewhat of a blur however. There was this huge, impenetrable structure with a giant hole the size of a football field. I did keep going back to look. Somehow, at first, it helped. In between the threat of another plane, bombs, suspicious packages, and exploding manhole covers in DC, finding out more information and seeing things for myself helped. I remember hearing that the fire went on burning for days before it was completely out. That rescue workers were working around the clock, and I even drove by once in the middle of the night and saw the huge lights they had erected so they could continue working. Places were established for people who wanted to help. Such an outpouring from people who wanted to help but didn?t quite know how - counselors came, people brought food and shelters for workers; so much love. I remember the newscasts telling people to hold off on going to donate blood unless they had type O because the blood banks were full. A makeshift memorial began at the corner and it was incredible to see all of the flowers and tokens that people were leaving in memory of those lost. The rest of that day and week is mostly a blur. What I remember are the constant sounds of F-16's and helicopters flying over my house and emergency vehicles driving down my street (Washington Blvd. is the direct route to the Virginia Hospital Center of Arlington where they took most of those injured). I went to stay at a friend?s house in Fairfax to get away for the weekend. The sounds were constant. That's what I remember the most, the sounds of war. Make no mistake, like it or not, we were experiencing first hand war...here on American soil. I was supposed to fly to Buffalo last October, but was not ready to board a plane yet. It was months before I was ready and even then I was extremely nervous, as I'm sure others were too. Even after the clean-up was underway, other threats kept coming in the form of Anthrax scares. It seemed like it would never end. One good thing in the aftermath was niceness. Road rage was suspended, albeit temporarily, and people were nice to each other for a while. There was a resurgence of manners... please and thank you...opening doors for others...letting people into your lane...things that were once the norm, but had become lost along the way, returned for a brief period of time. Like many, I began to rethink my life priorities and goals, spend more time with my family, and reconnect with old friends. Why did it have to take such a tragedy to get us all to do that though? I wonder what the long-term impact these events will have really is. Not that we should ever forget, but we do have to go on living. The hard part is to not feel guilty for that; that we can go on living when so many have died. I have since moved to Buffalo, New York to attend graduate school. The timing right in so many ways...I wanted to pursue a Master's degree, be near my extended family, and be away from the DC area. Don't get me wrong, I love Virginia. I spent nearly 20 years of my life there. Arlington is beautiful, being near the heart of government and politics is great. But it was time for a break from the fast pace. I miss seeing my immediate family every day though. My one sister had a baby in May at the very hospital the ambulances were traveling to last year. The other transferred schools and is now attending Old Dominion University. I try to talk to them both every few days. The flags everywhere, the candlelight ceremonies, the outpouring of love...I do miss that. On this one-year anniversary, I wish I were able to drive past the Pentagon and have gone to the various events in the DC area to pray and remember. On this day I was at Northmont High School in Clayton, Ohio. At the timesof the attackes on the World Trade Center, I was in my second peroid class, Biology, but the I didn't find out about it until third period English. When I first walked into the classroom the TV was on showing people screaming and running when they saw the first plane crash into the first tower. At first I didn't think it was true because I didn't think someone would really crash a plane into a bulding. But then I saw the secould plane go in to the second tower. Then I knew it was real. Later on that day, I heardthat another plane had crashed into the Pentagon. Later both towers collapsed, and a fourth plane crashed in western Pennsylvania. At that point I was getting scared because I didn't know what was going to happen next. In my opinion, I think the hereos are the fire fighters, policemen, and everyone else who tried to help people fet out of the towers and Pentgon. They wanted to save as many lives as possible knowing that maybe they could loss there's as well. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11 I was in the pool for morning water polo practice. While we were passing I saw one of the coaches enter the pool deck and tell our coach something we didn't know what he was just told but we knew it was something bad. Our coach just shook his head and our other coach put her hands over her mouth. When we got out and where in the showers one of our teammates came over to us and said," Hey, did you guys hear about the plane that was hijacked and flown into the world trade center?" We all thought it was part of a joke so we said no and waited for the punch line. She just stared at us and said,"No, its true a plane really did crash!" Then we stared at each other in disbelief. I had not fully realized how bad it was until I went to my 4th period class and actually saw the plane hit the 2nd WTC and I began to cry. When I got home that day my uncle called. He had just recently become a firefighter. He told me some of the men from his station were leaving for NY but he wasn't because he was new. After a whileof silence my uncle said,"Being a firefighter myself, I know for a fact that if I was a NY firefighter I would not hesitate whatsoever,running into one of those buildings to fullfill my duties."I cried some more and said goodbye. The thing that will stay in my mind forever is what my uncle said that day. I know that those men and women who perished are truly heroes. I will never forget....
