Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was on the city bus riding downtown to go to law school. The city bus has a certain character and cast of characters. Of course the loud drunk, the young mother with her brood of children, the nodding addict, the schitzophrenic, the homeless--if they are lucky to have the change. The conversation may be rich material for aspiring writers, but it's generally ignored by the everyday rider. On this morning, I was sitting in the middle, towards the back and overheard a man talking wildly about a plane hitting the trade towers in New York City. At first I was inclined to let it wash over me--could I approach the mellowness of a busdriver? But the more I listened and then heard about the second plane, I physically turned around in my seat, and listened to what he was saying. I made an immediate mental plan to head for the student lounge with the cable tv instead of my classroom. The instant I stepped off the bus I was striding towards the lounge, already populated by student zombies. Dead silence but for the news anchor's updates. I dashed to the phones but they were all occupied. Then I headed for the computer lab to email my parents. I begged a classmate I recognized to let me use his computer. I was finally able to talk to my mother when a classmate let me use her cellphone. The land lines were jammed. By this time, once I was back from the computer lab, the second tower had come down and there was a buzz about bombs at the state department. I told my mother not to worry for me because I was in Baltimore and not to worry about Dad because the terrorists were picking high profile targets, not unknown defense department installations. In my mind were images of tall silver escalators, the Ann Taylor, trees in the winter garden, the U.N. photo display ... things I had walked by last September. And memories of cocktails and swing dancing with my friends at the top of the Trade Tower (South?) before my friend's wedding the next day. Outside my classmate was falling apart; her former boyfriend worked near the top of the tower where the first plane hit. She had no doubt that he would have been at work that day. We stood around in stoney silence, with our arms around her. One classmate was a Marine; she said she was "pissed." A note was taped to the door canceling Van Alstine's Contracts class. Outside, then inside at the lounge, through the hallways, searching clusters of people for friends I could gather with, wandering around. I barely knew anyone. No close friends. School had just started. My long distance boyfriend was far from my side. I did not want to get on a city bus to go back to my apartment, what would I do there? I would not consider taking a train south through DC to head home to Virginia. What could I do but watch CNN in the student lounge? Plumes of black smoke rose from the Pentagon. The tower kept falling down! Falling down on the television screen! There were still several planes in the air. There were reports of a bomb at the State Department. My sister was on the same doomed Boston flight just days before. My brother , who serves in the miltary was in the Pentagon for training just the day before, some of his co-workers did not survive. Tell us your story: i woke up on the morning of september 11th, going about my day as usual. nothing seemed different about this day, but unfortunalty i had no idea what was yet to come. i don't really remember when i first heard the news, but i do remember my parents suddenly yelling at me to come see something that they were watching on tv. when i first saw what was going on. i was shocked. i couldn't believe that at that same moment i was watching the tv, two of our most famous landmarks in the U.S.,the world trade centers were being destroyed. i didn't undersdtand what was happening a t first, there was a plane flying straight into one of the towers and next it was being blown up. the tower began to crumble and fall to the ground. before i could think next another plane was soaring through the air headed straight for our twin tower. at this time america was completely voulnerable and there was nothing we could to do. the plane smashed in the tower and another burst of fire and smoke rushed through the new york skys. suddently the towers began to cave in and in a matter of minutes they were no longer standing.i couldn't believe it, on of the most signifigant figures in america was no longer standing and not only had that vanished but thousands of people inside the tower were givin no chance and lost their lives to this act of hatred. i was devestated. i couldnt believe that this had just happened. millions of innocent lives had been taken on this morning and america would never be the same. this cruel act of violence left millions devestated and thousands no longer breathing. for the firt time in history of america, not some, but all were left speechless. I clearly remember walking into school just the same thing, so use to it being so simple and not complicated at all. I walk into my first period class civics with Mr. Goudy with absoutly no interest in learning about politicians. We were taking notes and all of these teachers kept walking into his room and whispering things. This was confusing so he turned on the t.v in our room and we were astonished with the pictures flashing before us. Death and misery was not in the distant Middle East anymore it was in our house and until it happens to you, you just don't realize the whole picture. The whole rest of the day we walked about like zombies and we would occansionally laugh to break the tension, but it sounded so distant and very unimportant. That is my story it isn't amazing or life threatning, but it is what I felt and I will never forget it! I had to go to the hospital the night before to get IV fluids so I was sleeping when the first attack occurred. I awoke to the phone ringing and it was my mother, who seemed very upset. She asked me if I could believe what was happening and I had no idea what she was talking about. I jumped out of bed and went into our living room and turned on the television and saw an unbelievable horrific sight, the second World Trade Center had just been hit. I sat and cried and was scared. Nothing can describe the terror and saddness I felt when the buildings fell to the ground. I couldn't stop crying throughout the entire day. I had a doctor's appointment later that day and was happy to find out all was well with my baby. I sat and thanked God for the wellness of my baby and prayed to God to help the families affected by this trajic event and also to help us as a nation deal with what had been done. I also prayed for all of the babies who would never see one of their parents again. This makes me sad to this day. We were second because the art class is next to the Tech. Ed. room and they ALWAYS have the news on in Tech. Ed.. I remember Mrs. Richmond (my art teacher) moving our class to the Tecch. Ed. room to watch the Twin Towers collapse. I had never heard of the Twin Towers before so it wasn't that big of a deal. I didn't know or understand what had happenned until people started breaking down and crying. Everything seemed so sureal and dark. My path seemed so uncertain. I was thinking "where do we go from here?" and "How do we go on with our lives not-knowing what ground we walk on?" I really didn't want to cry because I knew I wouldn't be able to stop. I held my breath so I wouldn't.I held it in soo long that I wasn't even there. When I let my breath out or tried to talk, I couldn't help but cry. Just imagine what it would be like to be on one of the top floors of that building on the screen. Knowing that you can't escape the pain. That you can't get down and safe from it all. Being afraid that you'll never see your loved-ones again. It's so agonizing. It's been a year and it still hurts to talk about. Today, my english teacher made us write about it. She asked if anyone would like to share thiers. As teared as I was, I volunteered and read aloud. The more I read, the more I wanted to cry. My voice got very cracked and tears strolled down my face. I dared not to look up because I knew everyone was stareing. Eventhough a bigger picture has been drawn, the little things still bother me. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It looked like it was going to be a beautiful day. I was on maternity leave, in my home getting my son ready for the morning. He was barely four weeks old. The phone rang, it was my husband. He was a little out of breath and sounded strange. He told me there was an explosion at the World Trade Center and that there was also one in Washington, DC. I thought he was joking with me - I said yeah, right. He said really, turn on the TV. So I turned on the TV and almost fell to the floor. I could not believe what I was seeing - it was like watching a disaster movie, but the reality of the situation hit home and my head was spinning. I could not think of any of the things I needed to do that day, although there were a few. All I could do was watch the TV, switching back and forth from one channel to another to see if there was any difference in the coverage. Each channel was showing the same tragedy with little difference in the coverage. When the World Trade Centers collapsed the thought of all the people trying to get out and the people trying to help them get out brought me to tears. No escape, little hope for survivors - I could only imagine how the families of these people were feeling as they too watched the same coverage. My heart goes out to all of them. I was finally able to pull myself together and get my son ready to go out and go to the food store. I needed to see for myself what was going on. I drove to our local hospital - 10 minutes away - as you can see the New York skyline from the parking garage. All of the streets were blocked off into the hospital - I don't know why, maybe security, later I found out that some of the victims were being transferred to this hospital - but I found my way in. I drove up to the top of the parking tier with dread hoping that it wouldn't be real - I found many other people had the same idea. The side of the parking garage that faces the City was flooded with people who were, in my mind, also trying to face the reality of the situation. With a heavy heart I got back in my car and drove on to my destination, the food store. Once inside the store, I was shocked to see how busy it was. Walking up and down the aisles I noticed people with their carts full of things like bottled water, canned goods, toilet paper, etc. I decided to forget my regular shopping list and do the same - bottled water (almost none), canned goods, etc. Standing in line to pay for my purchases there was total silence, no usual chatter amongst the customers and check-out clerks, no children begging for candy or any of the usual bantering at the checkout. There was one elderly lady standing behind me in line, she must have seen the look on my face as I looked into the other faces looking for some sign of hope. She started a conversation with me about my beautiful son - how old was he, what was his name, what a beautiful baby, etc. A look of sadness came over her as she commented on what a shame the baby had to live in such a chaotic and scary world. That was the end of our conversation as we checked out and went our different ways. I went home and immediately turned on the TV to see continuing coverage. My husband came home shortly after that, we held each other very tightly and we watched the devastation together with our infant son sleeping peacefully in the next room, oblivious to the evil and drastic changes that would take place in our country. Over the next several days, and following weeks, my beautiful baby boy woke up early in the morning, as most babies do. I would take him out of our bedroom and into the living room so I would not wake my husband who had to go to work in a couple of hours, I would turn on the TV to watch the continuing coverage, and as the days and weeks went on, the personal stories of sadness, tragedy and fear unfolded on the news. As my son fell back to sleep, satiated from his bottle, I looked at pure innocence and held him very closely, and I cried. It is now one year later, my son is thirteen months old. He is the light of my life and a pure joy. My husband and I want the world for him and we will try to instill good values and patriotism into him every chance we get. Every day I drop my son off at the babysitter with my heart in my throat and a tear in my eye - will there be another 9/11 tragedy? will today be the day? will I be able to get to my son fast enough if I need to? will my husband be able to get to us if he needs to? Has my life changed because of this tragedy? YES. I fear for my family, my extended family, my friends and for mankind in general. I go about my daily routine - go to work, do things with my family, take care of my son and husband, but these questions are always in the back of my mind. Tell us your story: I was home on the morning of September 11,2001 reading the morning paper and watching TV when I saw what had happened on TV on NBC I was really upset at what had happened to our Country. I have a Daughter that was a Flight Attendant for Continental Air Lines, stationed in New Jersey and I knew she was on duty that morning. I was very worried for all of America. I began to pray for all of the families that were effected by this attack and I prayed for my daughter to call and let me know she was ok and she finally did call and let me know that she was ok and not to worry. I watched tv all day long I just could not remove myself from the tv. I am very proud of America and all of the people that help in this time of need. My daughter did fly that day and for several month's after the attack she said she was not afraid to fly and some flight attendants were afraid to fly again and they did not fly after that day. She is no longer a flight attendant as she was laid off her job because of this attack on America but she enjoyed flying as this was her dream every since she was a teenager and she was living her dream. She has not been called back to work for Continental Air Lines. I am glad that I live in America and I am very proud of the way our President George W. Bush has handled things and still is handling America. He will go down in history as being one of the Greatest Presidents. I still Pray for all of America and our leaders and all of the Families of the 9-11-01. God Bless AMERICA is my prayer. I drove to school and sat in my car waiting for the bell to ring for first period. I was listening to the radio and heard some commotion about something happening in New York but i changed the station to listen to music instead. When i finally walked into my first period, the televison was on and my teacher was watching. Everyone was kind of confused as to what was going on but it all came together quickly when we saw the replay of the towers falling. I was in shock as my teacher talked to us about how important this was and how this was going to be something we'd remember forever. None of us really understood the impact of what was going on. When i walked out of first period and walked to my second i thought of what this meant. I have family living in New York and people i knew that worked there. I all the sudden became frantic and ran to my car to call my mom. By then i was uncontrollably crying and the thought that i might have lost someone i loved in such a horrific accurance made me crazy. My mom hadn't been able to get a hold of anyone back east so we were all frantic with worry. I could hardly bare sitting in every class holding back tears that often times just came out. When i came home i ran and hugged my parents and just sat there and cried with my mom. We all watched t.v. with amazment that this could really happen. We finally got a hold of family members back east and found out that thankfully everyone was ok. We did know someone that was in the towers but she did make it out ok. It was hard for my family and me to overcome the shock of it all, and to tell you the truth i don't think we ever fully will. We got on the bus and the radio was on and it was talking about the Twin Towers and planes. Tell us your story: I was at work and happen to be at the back of them store in Mcdonalds where i work as an Swing Manager and was watching the t.v. and saw the first plane go in to the first tower. I thought it was someone who didn't know how to fly a plane but it never crossed my mind that we were under attack. When the second plane went in to the second tower I knew we had trouble coming. I turned to my boss and immediately told him i needed to go and get my children,(I have 3 of them, 2 girls and a son) and needed them to be with me. I went and got them, there were many queastions that we were to answer in the coming hours and i also called my husband on returning to work with the children. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 10th I flew from National Airport in the D.C. area to Oceanside California. It was an early morning flight, and I remember driving past the Pentagon and taking a good look at it. I'd never really paid attention to it before, it was just a building that was always there, but for some reason I took a long look at it that morning. Thinking back to that feels a little weird. My fiance was in the Marine Corps, and was to return from a 6 month deployment to the middle east on Sept. 15th. The biggest worry on my mind was finding my way from the airport in San Diego to the car rental place, and from there to Oceanside, which is near Camp Pendleton where he was stationed. I didn't know that those worries would seem like the smallest most miniscule problems the following day. That night I checked into my hotel room, drove around the area a little, and fell asleep early. Around 630am California time I woke up and was about to get in the shower when my cell phone rang. I answered it, and it was my dad. I could tell something was wrong, but when he told me that planes had hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon I thought he was kidding, I was in shock. Then what he said hit me, and I turned the news on. Seeing the footage of the planes hitting both towers, and seeing the smoke coming from the Pentagon obviously made me extremely upset. Both of my parents work within a mile from the Pentagon, and I was worried that more planes would be heading that direction. Then I started worrying that the west coast would be next, and was afraid because I was there by myself. After getting off of the phone with my dad I tried to get through to my mom for over an hour. The phones were tied up, I couldn't get through to anyone back home in the DC area. My dad had been standing outside of where he works when the plane flew overhead going towards the Pentagon, and he had called my mom (she works in Crystal City) to tell her to leave. So she had gotten a head start on leaving the city, and was lucky in that manner. People were literally walking away from the city, because traffic was so tied up you couldn't drive anywhere. Back in California, I ended up in the lobby of the hotel trying to find the closest place that I could get on the internet. Seeing the news footage on the tv in the lounge started me crying all over again, and the girl who worked at the front desk was nice enough to give me a hug and try to comfort me. It's something I will never forget, having someone I didn't even know comforting me. I found my way to a public computer station so I could email my fiance and ask him to call me that night, and went back to the hotel. I finally got through to my mom. We did a lot of crying over the phone together, trying to understand why people could hate us so much to do that. I also eventually got through to my best friend back home, and tried numerous times to get through to the Red Cross to find a place to donate blood. Later that day I couldn't take sitting in my room alone watching the news footage, so I left to find something to do. The mall was closed, in fact anyplace that a lot of people would normally gather at was closed. I ended up at a Target store walking around, just to be around people and try to take what had happened off of my mind for awhile. The worst part was knowing this had happened in my hometown, where I grew up, and that I couldn't do anything to help. I was worried about the President's safety, but knew that our country was in good hands with President Bush as our leader and took comfort in that. The next 2 weeks were very hard. My fiance returned from his deployment. Something that I had looked forward to for so long and that should have been joyous and exciting instead felt numb. Most of that first week is still a blur for me. I just remember being glued to the tv a lot, and trying to find out if the people I knew that worked at the Pentagon and the WTC were ok. The second week I spent trying to figure out how I was going to get home. I've never been a fan of flying, and after this I was pretty much terrified. I considered staying in CA, and also considered taking a train home (3 days!), but in the end I flew home. I wasn't about to let THEM win, and I knew if I didn't get the courage to fly then, I probably never would again. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11,was the first day of my sophomore year of college at Furman University. I had a 9,10 and 11 o'clock class. I left for my 9 at about 8:45, and went to class. Class ran as schuduled, no one had heard anything so everything was normal. I couldn't even fathom how radically my world view would be changed in just a short hour. I went to my 10 o'clock class, the class sits down at attention and waits for the professor. The professor was late, something that professors are never supposed to do the first day. Immediatly it was evident that he was upset and had been crying, this was an upper level psych class, so we all begin to theorize about what had caused his distress. The professor began to speak, his voice broke, and he started to cry. He told us that New York had been attacked. He didn't know anything more than that, but he told us to go home and call our families, and to watch television. Most of us at this point in time thought this was great, we just got out of class in under 10 minutes. No one had any idea what we were going to be faced with as soon as we turned on the television. Instead of heading back to the dorms, I went to the bookstore to pick up an aditional book. When I walked into the bookstore, I was confronted with the first image of the attack on New York. I had never realized that there were televisions in the bookstore, but now they were the main focus. When I saw the television footage of the plane hitting the World Trade Center, chills ran up and down my back. Some of the students were crying, some were dumbfounded and for the first time in my life I was scared to be an Amercian. The cafeateria was a buzz with information, mostly false but still passed on excitily from friend to friend. "The National Mall is on fire!", "They hit Regan Naional". No one knew anything, the cafeteria workers were huddled around a small television that had been rolled in, and that area had been turned into a congragation place for people seeking solice. It was amzing to watch a college campus, that is refered to in jest as "the Bubble", to be so profoundly affected by events that were so far away. From that day on the world that I live in and the school that I attend have never been the same.
