SEPTEMBER 11TH 2001 WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY.The view facing south to the bay from our offices in First Union Bank was fantastic. At the time of the first attack I was sitting in my managers office on a conference call with our home office in Charlotte N.C.. There was a huge explosion and everything began to tremble. As we all jumped out of our chairs, the building actually rocked back and forth. I thouht that it would topple over.Luckily it righted itself. Out side of the window I could see concrete, glass and what looked like pieces of machinery falling too the ground. There was millions of pieces of paper fluttering in the breeze. I have been to ticker-tape parades on Broadway but this was the most paper that I had ever seen. If any of you have seen say, a mouse run by you and doubt that you really saw one, then you will know the feeling I had seeing airplane seats,people and those certain pillows and blankets hurtle past our windows. Moving into our main floor all of the people were away from the windows and many were on the phones.When we contacted the lobby we were told to stay put. Many of the employees began to go thru the procedure of locking our vault after putting stocks and bonds away. The room began to get very smokey and I went to the emergency exit in the back of our office. I felt the doorknob with the back of my hand and it was warm. Also smoke was coming in from under the door.Clearly this was not the way to get out. I went to my desk and grabbed a wind-breaker jacket I wore that day and stuffed it under the door. As I write I realize this story is too long to write. To make a long story short. I am 1 of 20 people who survived after being buried alive under the tower collapse. How can a mind of any human being even imagine to kill thousands of innocent wonderful people?. I went down to ground zero and I felt a anger inside of me that thousands of people had to die because a group wanted to destroy the freedom, economy, and heartbeat of America. But I'm proud of every single American because in the face of loss, fear, and danger we look terror right in the face and didn't back down. And because we responded in that way we as a people won the war on terror in our homeland. We won the war for the victims that were lost. God bless America. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was sleeping peacefully on Sept. 11, 2001 at my house in a nice suburb of Chicago, IL. The phone rang early. I thought it was my boyfriend, but it was one of my father's friends. As soon as I picked up the phone he was yelling "Turn on channel 5!!" I didn't know what was going on or why this friend of my father's was calling so early. So, in a strange state of sleepiness and disorientation I turned on the news. What I saw next was horrible. The camera showed people running around the streets of New York is shock. I was in shock myself when I saw what was going on. At first I thought that the plane crashes were just coincedental. But as the day went on and the news received more and more information, I learned that it was a terrorist event. A thousand questions whizzed through my mind. The biggest one was 'why us, why America?' I love this country. Even though many people in America don't believe in every decision nothing like this has happened before. It broke my heart. I can't even imagine what those people were feeling in that huge city. Probably a billion different feelings. What a horrible event to happen here. It happened in a city so far, but yet so close. I hope that one day the people that are responsible for these actions feel all the pain that all the Americans and people of other countries felt. Nothing can describe that feeling. It united us well. I don't think that it was necessasary though for such a terrible event. We are supposed to be 'Land of the Free, and Home of the Brave' Everyone wants to come to America. Why would someone want to terrorize us? Honestly, I think some of it has to do with jealousy. Some people in more unfourtunate countries do wish that they were like us, and I hope someday that they are. The people who want their freedom should be heard. There are many ways to become involved in your community, even government positions as well. After this class I started on a walk towards my 9:30 am class. This is where I started hearing bits and pieces. I had no idea of what had just happened, nor did I realize severity of it. By the time a made it to my class I had an idea that some terrerists had done something to the U.S.A. In class the professor had a t.v. and explained what was going on. That The New York trade building had been attacked by terrerists and had collapsed. This seemed impossible inconceivable the U.S.A. is thought to be indistructable- "the super power". How did this happen to the U.S.A. After explaining it all and watching the news on T.V. the entire class period some of my friends and I went back to my room and keep watching to news. This was the talk of campus, the only talk. The school gave uf the rest of the day off. That day everyone had millions of questions. What is this going to do to our trade, stock markets? How is this going to affect us right away? What should we do? No on had the answers. It was an unsure time. For weeks it seemed to be the main topic of conversations. I still watched the news for updates and discussed it with others who were doing the same. 9/11 is the fisrt major historical even in my life-time. It is one that I will talk to my kids and grand kids about.It is a time to be remembered, yet a time everyone would like to be able to forget. God help us all!! I had just left my gym class..and well. I will say I was confused. Attacked? Seeing I was in school..I thought this was a joke. But when I hit my 3rd class. Reality hit me. As soon as I walked into the room..the second plane had hit one of the towers. My friends where crying..my classmates who where not, where in a shocking silence. I had went to all my classes..my last teacher, pointing to myself, and another guy..and said "How do you think you'll look in a uniform...because thats whats going to happen......". I thought of everyone then. Watching the tv. Holding friends...grim and quiet. What tore at me was watching people hanging from the windows screaming for help. It felt like I was watching a action movie. Only it was sadly, the cold reality of how some mankind can be when they dont like something. It sickened me to be human then. But I could feel my american pride rise..in the end. When I watched our government sing God Bless America. And President Bush standing with the speakerphone, announcing our pride and that they had awakened a slumbering giant and so forth. For days after that ....that noise, the noise of the firemens tank alarms..going off..chilled me. I heard it in my sleep...I heard it in my mind during school...as i type yhis now..I hear it...as if I where there..and I wasnt...I think all us americans where there in spirit...if that makes sense.. I was angry. I wanted to march right off and join the army..the navy..the military..anything...I didnt care if I was female. I was upset..confused...I only read about these kind of things in history books!! But here I was..watching live on TV..thousands dieing in the matter of hours...all because people have problems...and try to take things into their own hands..when it is none of their business... Of course..after a few minuets of calming..I let reality hit me. And concentrated back on school..I can help my dear America in many other ways... I think that day really changed the town I live in too. It really touched me, the next day, while driving seeing our local fire fighters standing in the town roads, with boots, going to cars and trying to collect money. It really touched me...like i said..that day was life changing for myself..and im sure others...good..or bad.. 9/11 was the day after my 18th birthday...and the entire year..was my senior year of highschool. That day opened my eyes and made me relise...a lot of things. I guess I should say...I grew up on that day, I learned what reality was.. And I think about all those ppl who died, and carry them in my heart...I light candles for them, and I pray that someday this world will live in peace..and I will never forget them or that day..and I will tell my children..and my childrens children about that gruesom cold day. Tell us your story: My roommate came in and woke me up at 8:52 am, he looked really freaked out, he said that a plane flew in the World Trade Center. I thouhgt he was joking or I was having a bad dream, I rolled over to go back to sleep. I heard him in the living room, I got up and turned my tv on and there it was. It was like a movie. Everything was in slow motion that day, my brother called me to get out of Stamford-it is a pretty big city with US Warbugh and Swiss Bank here. I eventually did get into my car and go to Milford CT, 45 miles North of Stamford, the roads were eerily quiet. I got to my mothers and we just watched in horror. I moved to Florida 4 days later and I could not wait to go. I was so scared, I still am. I have recently moved back to CT and I feel at home. September 11, 2002 was a very somber day, a day of looking back at where I was physically and emotionally. What a difference a year makes. I am still sad and cry when I think of that day one year ago, but I feel stronger now then I did them, this has made me stronger. I have so much love and respect for everyone who persished that day, inside and outside the towers, thay can never be forgotten. I will never forget-EVER-we all must never forget. Tell us your story: I was working at Anthem Blue Cross & Blue shield on the morning of the attacks when a friend had told me that a plane had crashed into world trade tower 1. We thought nothing of it, we were just thinking that a plane had crashed. Then we heard about the second plane just minutes later. We really thought something of it then. People all over work had the t.v.s turned on as well as their radios. People were crying and showing their sympathy for the families and victims. It was the most horrible thing we had ever seen. All day long we were watching the tv at work and listening to the radios. We then heard that a man intown was running around with a gun. So we all got really scared. My wife Dora and I were at the dentist when we heard over the radio that a plane had hit one of the two towers of the World Trade Center. At first, we thought it was a small plane. When we found out the size of the plane we assumed it was some sort of horrible accident. When the second plane hit, we knew something was up. Then we heard about the other planes and we knew we were looking at a wartime situation. The day was worsened when we made it home and started to follow the coverage on television. We were extremely saddened and angry. As time has gone on I have greatly appreciated the rememberances and ceremonies for those who died and the heroes of the day. Maybe I am just old school( I was 30 when the attacks happened), but I believe one major area has been overlooked. That area is the need for true revenge. I am not a believer in political correctness. This is about defending our country against a real threat and honoring those who were killed on that day. We need to catch every Al-Qaeda member, interrogate them, and then kill them. No trials or lawyers, just raise the red flag (which means no quarter; no prisoners taken). Tell us your story: I was awoken by my Sister calling me telling me of the horrible crash into the first tower, So I turned on the TV and sat there in awe, not because of the specticality of it all, but of the feeling that came over me thinking of the people both on the plane and the people in the World Trade Center who could have caught a glimpse of what was about to happen to them and praying. Then to my absolute amazement as I was still on the phone with my sister, crying, (chills are actually going up and down my neck as I am writing this), we saw another plane go into the other building right in front of our eyes LIVE on TV. My heart stopped, I started getting frantic, in a BAD way, I have a son and at the time was in a new school, new teacher, new people, scared for him I didn't have a car and wanted to go get him just to hold him, who was to say that, that day would or would not have been our last on Earth. All I wanted to do was to be with my Son, my little 7 year old with Special Needs. I couldn't get him so, I sat there and just cried my eyes out. I lit candles all over the house, praying that everybody would be OK, but I knew better and was afraid to admit it, even to myself. I was in complete denial, like I had family in those buildings, planes and areas of tragedy. My Sister and me sat on the phone with our mouths hung wide open, well I knew mine was and if I know her, hers was too. I was terrified that the World was ending. Then, when the other planes crashed, I started to get angry about the whole entire situation that these so called people, of this world and time that we live in could actually think that this would tear down the United States. Isn't that why we are called The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!! This has only made our country stand stronger and more patriotic, along with much more love for the here and now and what really matters today, like the song that Toby Keith sings "MY LIST", we need to listen to that song and take heed to all the things that you've put off for tomorrow and do them NOW! God Bless all the families who have lost a loved one, we all feel for those who were in and around the tragedies of September 11 and we are all in one way or another part of it, for the United States is UNITED. We just began to shop for X-Mas gifts and souveniers when we heard a report of the attack on the Pentagon. Not hearing the entire report, we asked the salesperson what was going on? Upon learning of the attacks, we scrambled for more information as to what airline was involved (my brother is a commercial pilot) and I was frantic to reach relatives that reside and work in that area of Manhattan. In my case, my family was okay.(there are many stories to tell) However we grieved for the families that were not so fortunate, and we, like many fellow Americans were glued to the T.V. for the latest news. One year later, We are so very proud to be Americans, and are so very supportive of those who ensure that we are indeed "Home of the Brave". Tell us your story: I woke up to one of the most beautiful days i had seen in the month of September.I live with my widow daughter and her six children,so as usual,after she left to drive the four youngest one to school..i went up to my tiny room,coffee mug in hand. .. My room has one window only and it faces Manhattan.After each school morning rush,it was my custom to sit on my stool in front of my computer,sip my coffe and look out towards the city.On a clear day,i could see forever...the Twin Towers,a bridge,the Empire State Building,etc..My eyes were focused towards my right,looking at the E.S.B...when the phone rang and my daughters voice,loud and agitated,came through,,screaming.."Are you in your room looking out?I said yes"Why"She responded."look towards the Towers!!"Something happened because as i was driving back on Metropolitan ave.,i saw a big fire on one of the Towers!" I said..ok...bye.I turned to look at the Towers and saw the fire on the Tower on my right.I was calm,i thought it was just a fire and the fire dept. would be there already handling it.I then saw a jet plane,flying a bit too low and suddenly..it went right into the next Tower.It exploded,kind of...so did my emotions..i could not beleive it.I turned on the tv and there it was..all over the news..no one knew yet what had happened. . I had always felt blessed,to have this little room with the view of the city,that even at a distance,i couls see so much!Sitting here each morning,was a way for me to unwind,to relax and meditate and at times..have a pity party when i felt low.Wich was once in while.I lost my 32 year old son in 1994,to AIDS,lost a couple of close friends to cancer and in the year 2000,lost my only brother.Staring at the city reminded me of my son and my brother because they just loved Manhattan,had worked and lived there ,years ago.The sun always goes down in that direction and i have seen the most beautiful sunsets from here. . . Because i like to draw and paint,it never ceases to amaze me.."What an artist is our creator to create such gorgeous colors on the horizon!My thinking has changed since that tuesday morning.I have cried for weeks,in my solitude...for the enormity of it all,for the fear that those people felt as they knew that they were going to die!This is one thing that never leaves my mind.I have flown,many times and i have had fearsome experiences during a bad weather flight...so i know what it is tofeel hopelessly fearful when you are all the way up there on a plane.As a mother and grandmother,i know how we do our best to protect our children,but to know that in a case like that,there is nothing one can do..this is the most horrible feeling i can think of! . I have prayed each day for the families of those victims.I have prayed for myself so i can accept that this tragedy happened and there is nothing i can do about it.Because it bothers me,to see people at times,going on with their lifes,without a "new" attitude.I never stop reminding my grandchildren about how these people lost their lifes.There is a lot of talk about getting emotional support for the children,because they might be suffering from emotional distress after this tragedy.Yes..i agree that a lot of kids feel very bad about what happened on 911.But,because they are children ,they will forget and kep busy with whatever.I beleive that us,the adults,have a tougher time dealing with these emotions of sadness,anger,frustrtion,etc.It should be easier for us,after all,we are adults. . . Well ,i was a child,living on a beautiful island,when the Nazis killed millions of jews.I came to this country when i was 12,started school and it was then,that i learned about those "horrific" crimes agaisnt the jews.Iam now 64 years old and you know what?I feel for those people like if i was there myself!I have read all i could about that tragedy and i will never ,ever forget what the Jewish people went through.We are supposed to be created equal.But we do not think and feel"equal.I pray that this Nation ,never ,ever forgets these tragedies.I don"t want my grankids to forget.If they get teary eyes as i remind them?Well..that is ok,because 911 is something to get teary eye about,something to keep in your heart and memory.Feeling sad can help some of these hard-headed kiss to stop thinking that life is ..toys,good times and to stop taking life and safety for granted.To be cautious,alert.. . . I hardly ever look across my window towards the city.Sometimes i glance just to make sure the E.S.B. is still there.To me,this view is a constant,solenm,silent reminder of those lost lifes.And my heart feels so saddened by it..as i think of the families of those victims... Katie came across the tv and said the first plane had hit and when they went to the site live the second plane hit. It was in the moments that all I could hear was screams in my head. I broke down and wept, then had to explain to my 5 year old what had happened. My heart goes out to all of those who lost thier lives as well as thier family and friends. As one country music singer from England said, on that day all of America became New Yorkers and all the world became Americans. While the screams have easied the memory is there and my heart is broken and sad. I do not know if anything will ever erase that. Tell us your story: on september 11th iwas at home ,it was about 7:40 am our time and i was putting my son on the bus for school. i came back in the house currled up on my couch still half asleep . i turned on my tv and flipped through the channels when i found msnbc there in front of me were pictures of the world trade center on fire . the news anchor had said a plane had hit the tower. i woke my husband and told him to come watch the news . as we sat on the couch with are newborn baby we saw people jumping from the tower and the fire blazing out of control then it happend the second plane hit the tower we just looked at each other in horror. my husband said we are under attack he said go get our son out of school this is gonna get ugly so i rushed to the school and got our son . when igot back to the house my husband was screaming no this cant be happening. that is when i heard that the heart of our nations security had been hit. if they could hit the pentagon then they could get us all. then reports came in that there were more planes . we kept our eyes glued to the tv as we watched again in horror the towers collapsing my heart sank and i cryed. i am sitting here looking at my children and wondering are we going to see tomarrow. as the hours passed my husband said we needed to go to the store and get food and gas just in case. this is where we seen our own terrorist in our town the price of gas went from 1.45$ a gallon to 5.50$ in one minute. going to the grocery store was like something out of a horror movie .THE place was packed full but you could of heard a pin drop the radio was on live news coverage and everyone was listening to it as people stocked up on supplies. the rest of the night was erie you could look down the street at midnight that night and every house was lit up . i will never forget the day the world stopped and the feelings we felt on that infamous day in september we will always remember. misty and jason shelsky Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. I went to the office to turn in my atendance at around 9 and the secretary told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. We thought it was a smal plane that had done so accidentally. We continued to listen to the radio and heard of the 2nd plane hitting the other Tower. I returned to my classroom, trying to act as nothing had happened - I had 19 7 &8 year olds to teach! I received a message on my e-mail from my 15 year old daughter - she was at school, located very near NASA. The rumors flying around there were that NASA would be hit next. My daughter expressed her fear of being that close to NASA - I told her to leave school and come to my school. She did. Only then did I feel "ok"! I realized how fortunate I was to have all that mattered right there with me at a time when that was the most important thing. Parents of my studetns began arriving to take their children home. I know that they felt the same wasy - if they just had their family all together, in one place, things would be "ok". Because my students were so young, there wasn't much de\iscussion in hte room. They know that something big had happened - they could feel the tension in the whole building. There were several teacher who had family flying that day and we were sharing cell phones and covering classes so that they could try to locate family memebers. It is a day that I will always remember! Yesterday, on the anniversary, we had a moment of silence and said the pledge - really said the pledge. Then it was back to business as usual for the students. Not for me though. My heart was heavy the whole day. I pray peace and blessing to all the family and friends of those lost in this horrible attack.
