Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work in a county office building when I head the news. The only thing I could think of was getting home to my not even one year old son. The usual commute to my office from my home was ten minutes if that and when we were released from the building early it took almost 45 minutes to get home. My sons birthday is on the 23rd of September. I went from a happy mother planning a one year old party to a mother who started to worry about her child's future. I just remember thinking why couldnt my son get past his first birthday without having to worry about war. This changed my whole life. This is a tragedy that hit very close to home for me. It made me think that it CAN happen to us. I remember hearing stories and chatter in the office before leaving about how someone's husband was supposed to be in New York that day at the World Trade Center but decided not to go. Its things like this that you here that makes you wonder why are some spared in a coincidence like that one. I did not know anyone personally involved but this incident touched me like nothing else before and it even took me awhile to get over it. All I wanted to do was hold my son forever and help those who were in need. I recently saw a poll on CNN.com that was asking should September 11th be a national memorial day. And surprisely most people said no because it is a reminder of terror. I voted yes because it reminds us that this has happened right hear in the U.S. and when I saw all the flags flying the day after the attacks I had a sense of a nation that can really come together in a time like this. I felt uniformed with the entire nation. You dont see things like this in every day life. It seems everyone is out for themselves all the time. But when I realized how many people were remembering that day, I felt that all Americans were working together instead of against each other. So to me this day is a reminder of faith in the nation and that when times get tough we can be there for each other and we will take the time to remeber all of those innocent people who lost there lives just because of some coincidence that left them in the situation without choice. This is what I saw and felt! ~ MANHATTAN TWIN TOWERS ~ Without a warning, missiles in the form of American planes: Come crashing into targets that are filled with innocent human beings! Steel, concrete & marble explode becoming smaller deadly weapons: Killing and wounding the working people of our nation! Tell us your story: I was enroute to my job at Mayport Lanes listening to the Lex and Terry radio show on Rock 105, Jacksonville, Florida when they made a comment about seeing an aircraft crash into one of the World Trade Center Buildings. They became deadly serious and told everyone listening to please stand by as something serious is happening to the World Trade Center buildings in New York. Arriving at my job, all my co-workers were watching CNN in a state of disbelief. At 10 AM we were all told to go home as the bases were going on high stage of alert and all non essential personnel had to leave. As a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer I attempted to contact the retirement board to return to active duty in an effort to show my patriotism, unfortunately they informed me that I had been retired to long to be called back as they already had a slewful of volunteers calling to come back in the service. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I wrote the following for my newspaper, La Gaceta, in Tampa on September 12: "Is everyone all right? Please, someone reply if you are in New York and are all right." That is it. That mass email I sent to my 20 or so friends and family up north is the only communication I had with anyone in the New York area. While those I love were stuck in New York, while those closest to me were prisoners of this horrific crime, all I could do is sit at my desk and stare at my email, hoping that someone would reply, hoping that someone would calm my fears. I felt hopeless, I felt weak and I felt small and insignificant. How dare I be afraid? How dare I be scared? Here I sit, in my nice comfy air conditioned office staring at the horror on a television while so many I know have to deal with it firsthand, they are living the horror. My entire life, these people were always there for me. When I accomplished something great, my friends and family were always there to congratulate me. When I was hurt, when things went wrong, they were always there to lift my spirits with a hug, with a joke or simply by being with me. But when they needed me most, when they needed me to hug them and tell them it would be all right, when they needed me to crack a joke and try to bring a smile to their faces during this bleak moment, I was nowhere to be found. I wished I was Superman and could fly to New York in a matter of seconds, blow the cloud of smoke away from the city and search the streets for my friends and family and fly them to safety. But I couldn?t. All I am is a simple writer for a local paper. I?m not Superman, I?m only Clark Kent. I felt like a nobody. Slowly a few emails started coming in. One was from my friend Mike who said our friend Marc, who takes a train to the World Trade Center everyday, took the day off work in order to close on his house. Another was from my friend Chris? fianc? Kim, who said she spoke to Chris and he was all right. But still, so many of my friends and family were unaccounted for, so many were still lost. I called my mother and she reassured me that my aunt and uncle were all right, and my cousin, who works across the street from the World Trade Center, overslept so was nowhere near the explosion. It was so hard not to cry, not to want to jump into the phone and hug my mother, and ask her to tell me that everything would be all right, that everyone would be fine. I ran to the bathroom and could no longer keep my composure. I cried and I cried. I cried for my friends and family who were lucky enough to live through the experience, and I cried for my friends and family whom I had not yet heard from. For the rest of the day, all I could think of was everyone I know who is stuck in New York. I could picture them trapped and afraid. I could picture them locked away in their homes, huddled together, afraid and confused, and I grew even more upset. I wanted to be there with them, I wanted to help. As the evening wore on, the feelings never ceased, until the late news came on and showed some interesting footage of the city from the sky. Despite all the destruction, all the horror and all the pain, the Statue of Liberty stood tall. Despite the best efforts of these terrorists, they were not able to destroy America and they were not able to destroy what we stand for, and I grew angry. Angry that I allowed these a**holes to play with my emotions like this. Angry that I allowed them to scare me, make me feel small and make me feel pathetic. As long as we allow them to do this to us, to make us feel this way, they win. As long as they have affected the way we live and the way we see the world, we allow them to win. I am not pathetic, I not weak and I am someone. I am an American, and that counts for a lot in my eyes. I am stronger than some cowards who think they can change the world through faceless acts of terror. I am stronger than these cowards who feel the need to destroy life out of jealousy of what we have built here in America. I refuse to be afraid any more. I refuse to let them win. While everyone else in the media writes that a piece of us died during that terrorist act, I say the opposite. I never say the glass is half empty, I have always said that the glass is half full. So on this day I do not say a piece of me is dead, but much of me is alive. A few of my friends are still missing ? guys I went to college and high school with, girls I had childhood crushes on. Some of the news will be good and some will undoubtedly be bad, but no matter what the future may hold, I know I can find comfort in the fact that America is alive and all that we stand for will continue to live forever. Tell us your story: I had dropped off my two children at school and then proceeded on to a local discount store to do some shopping for items that we needed. At this particular store they have televisions above all the checkouts at the front store. While doing my shopping everytime I passed by the TV's to see the latest news (they show CNN). At that time they were just reporting the usual everyday news, nothing really of importance. A little while later I looked up again and heard and saw that a plane just hit a building in New York city. I listened to it for a while and then went back to my shopping. As I was shopping I remember think to myself, "how can a plane just hit a building"? Then it hit me I bet it was terrorism. I finished up my shopping and then left. In the car going home I turned on the radio to hear more of what was going on. At this time it was so confusing to figure out what really happened. When I got home I went inside and turned on the television to get more information of what was happening. I saw the pictures on TV and just remember how sad I was. I worried about my kids at school and my husband at work and all those people in New York and at the Pentagon. I could not get over what was happening. A little while later the phone rang and the school called telling me that my daughter heard the news of what was happening and got really scared and could I come get her. I went to get her and the first thing she asked was how was Dad. We are in Ohio and many miles from where all this happened but she was still scared. I brought her home and let her call her Dad to see that everything was ok. I also did my best to comfort her and let her know it will be ok. School was ending and it was time to pick up my son. He was also scared and could not understand what had all just happened. We got home and the rest of the afternoon and evening we just watched TV together and tried to make sense of what had happened in our country. I found it so hard to explain to them what happened, and just to let them know that everything will be ok. It will take a long time to heal from this tragedy and I just don't think things will ever be like they were. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was an 8th grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher in Union City, NJ. I was reviewing vocabulary words - can still recall some of those words today - constellation, astronomy - when one of the custodinas came flying into my classroom telling me to put on the television because a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. I was one of the few teachers in the building who had a TV that could receive TV signals and not just be used to play videos. I thought to myself, "Finally, someone will hook up all the wires and get this TV working," which I had been begging people to do the past week, but to no avail. Of course, I did not know how trivial that was at the time. We watched the events, as a class, on TV. I can still remember that a few students were not able to handle what was on TV, so they asked if they could go to room 310 to be with a different teacher. Even after the second plane hit, I was still trying to convince myself that it was all just a terrible accident. When the students went to lunch, I sat in my room alone and tried to eat my lunch - a roast beef sandwich. I took a few bites before I realized that I could not eat and wanted to be with everyone else in the cafeteria. Five years later, I am an 8th grade teacher in Fair Lawn, NJ. Today during lunch, I bit into my sandwich - and realized that I, once again, had roast beef. Tonight I stood in my backyard to view the "Tribute in Light," standing in the same place where I stood five years ago, as I watched how 'life as we knew it' had changed forever. I went through the motions and eventually ended up at school like many mornings before. Computer class came and went and I moved on to my math class. We got our assignment and started to work on it when some of the head administrators started walking up and down the hallways. They motioned through the windows that our teacher Mrs. Kampa should come out of the classroom and speak to them. We all thought it was pretty routine, until we saw her face as she came back into the room. She explained as much as she could to us and then turned on the television. The classroom filled with students buzzing back and forth to one another about what had just happened. Then there was silence. The second building was hit. We were shocked. When they fell to the ground, we were silenced with disbelief. I remember some crying, but I remember the confusion the most. Going through the rest of the day was tough. Teachers were upset, many distraught. The day seemed to drag on. When I got home, the news was on. We sat and watched and waited for my sister to get home. The reason I say that is because that day was her birthday. When she got home, I hugged her. She was pretty upset, but we ended up going out to eat for her birthday as a family that night. On the way to and back from the restaurant, instead of our music, the news was on the radio. Having been bombarded by the media all day, we shut it off. Not for the fact that we didn't want to hear, but because we wanted what we had before: a normal family life. We were not about to let something like this stop our family. Diane's Song When the plane passed right over our heads I thought it was in trouble and trying to land in the water. It hit the first building. Then Kathryn said, "We're under attack." I thought, "Where is my daughter?" I thought that an awful mistake had been made. In the street all the people were running uptown Except for one man who, holding his head, Shouted, "No!" while running not up, but down. And people were jumping from windows, a sight I forgot for a year - Did my eyes deceive me? The second plane hit. Then Kathryn turned and said, "All right, now do you believe me?" In the street a Jamaican woman stopped as her legs buckled under her. That mother clasped her hands together and cried, "My son in one building; my daughter in the other." A woman stayed with her as Kathryn and I ran home and told our neighbors to leave. We gathered our work, our clothes but that's not all for it seemed everyone had cats. We met downstairs, the neighbors with all of their carrying cases when there before us Stood forty-two seniors with no place to go. "We can't leave," I said. Kathryn said, "I know." So we put back our stuff and we stayed as the cloud engulfed our homes and insidiously set up house in our lungs; as hour passed hour we lost water, phones, then the rest of our power. Someone said that they'd seen my missing kid She'd gone to a friend's house a block from the Center. Thank God that I didn't know then where she was. To this day I can't get straight just what she did. For the next several days we drank powdered milk courtesy of a curate who came in a truck Things seemed to be going O.K. until someone said, "I just took my last heart pill." We found medication; we manned the drugstore A mysterious stranger brought by sixty meals Over time we got back some power, the phones and the water; the toxics came too, more and more. The government told us the air was O.K. so we didn't think twice; we started to clean while a mile up Broadway some scientists found the most toxic small particles they'd ever seen. Now the neighbors have come down with asthma and rashes With Trade Center cough and severe sinusitis I've had five infections; the cat has had three and Kathryn and her cat have chronic bronchitis. The world has moved on. Most people believe In the war against terror, the U.S. is winning But we people downtown wonder if for us September 11th was just the beginning. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11,2001, I got up around 6:00am thinking it was going to be a normal day. Once I got to school, my friend came up to me and told me that there was some plane crash in New York. I was concerned, but I didn't realize how big of a crash it was. It wasn't until I got to my third period class that I heard that the plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Centers. I couldn't believe it. Throughout the day, I didn't hear anything about it at school. Once I got home, I turned on the tv to find that it was on almost every channel. I thought it was terrible that someone would attack America like that, and I was sad for all the people who lost their lives. It was weird for me, because in 1998 I visited New York and went into the second Tower that was hit. I remember being really frightened that something would happen, because it was such a tall building. There was even a small fire in the restaurant there, and they shut down all the exits so, in the event that the fire would spread, it wouldn't go far. Once I saw the news footage of the people in the burning building, and the people falling out of the windows 110 stories up, I remembered how scared I was just when the exits were closed. I can't even imagine how terrifying it was to be in those buildings. I have a huge amount of respect for the firefighters who willingly went into the buildings to save people. September 11, 2001 was a very horrible, memorable day. It's definitely a day that I will never forget. But as the day went on, we all started to notice that the teachers were acting funny. The principal kept coming into the classrooms and whispering to the teachers. All of the adults looked scared. When we went outside for recess, the halls were crowded with panicky parents trying to bring their kids home. They were all yelling and shaking with fear. A few kindergarteners were crying. About halfway through recess, my teacher came up to me and told me that my aunt was here to bring me home. She brought my cousin and I back to Grandma's house and we watched everything on TV for the rest of the day. It really changed mine. I was just coming from school when cousin from Bremen called me and told me the horrible story that a plane hit the World trade center. I didn?t believe her at all. I said: ? Stupid Joke and hung ?. I sat in the living room with a coffee, I wanted to watch some MTV, or so. When I turned on the TV I seen Tower One burning. I thought it would be a crazy science fiction movie. But every channel had the same pictures. I called my mum at work to tell her. The reception was really bad so she didn?t understand what I?ve said. My dad was at work too, the only thing he said is that he?s scared and that America is facing a war. That was my first thought too. The following days were crazy. A mile from our house is the German Military Base. Three helicopters flew over our House not even an hour. And our President Gerhard Schr?der said: ? Das ist kein Angriff auf die USA, sondern auf die zivilisierte Welt.? We all were scared what will happen in future. Since then I?m really interested in policies. Every day I come home from work I watch CNN Europe to get news about investigations. I?m proud to be an American but I don?t want a war against Sadam. All of sudden I had heard someone yell to me, "hey Debi, an airplane just hit one of the towers". Well I thought she was just kidding and I said yeah right...anyway, a few moments later she had heard on her radio that another plane had hit the second tower. Everyone was going out on the internet and checking all of this out. It was horrible. It was the worst day ever.. I have always wanted to go to New York and take my kids to see the World Trade Center--but now I will not beable to do that because of one human(if you want to call him that) person who planned the whole thing. It saddens me to know that there are such cruel and evil people in this world. Why this happened-we will probably never know but what's worse is all the innocent people that were killed or hurt in this tragedy. Needless to say the company that I was working for at the time did have an employee who had a family member that was working at the World Trade Center and he was one of the people that was killed. The company closed the office and told everyone to go home and be with their families. For days that is all we saw on the television is the footage of this horrible tragedy..It's one I don't think anyone will ever beable to forget--at least I know I won't. It's been a year now and it's a pretty gloomy day here. Not too much happening and kinda sad. My heart goes out to all those families who were victims of this terrible occurrence. We need to always remember that life is too short and always make sure you kiss and hug your children, spouse every day when you leave because you never know what the day will bring. I was in my 4th period english class when anonucment had come on saying that a plane had crashed into the world trade center. I thought a plane had gotten off course and accidently crashed into the trade center. We didn't actually know what was going on becuase the tv wasn't working in the classroom. I would have never tought that it was a terriost attack but then another plane crashed into the other tower, one more was found crashed into the ground in Penslyvannia and another crashed into the pentagon. I knew that this couldn't be an accident. In the next period business programing we watched tv and we saw the footage of the planes crashing into the buildings. It was very suprising that this nation could be attacked in such a way. Turning a plane into a weapon. The last period on the day was spanish. we also watched tv in that class. It was period two, and I was teaching nine Chinese immigrants English as a Second Language 101. I took attendance and the students reviewed a former lesson: Hello, what is your name?" "My name is..." Since it was such a beautiful, crystal clear day, I chose to teach the kids, "Today the weather is beautiful!" The kids were still copying stuff from the blackboard as I stood by the window admiring the crystal clear blue sky. I heard a loud noise, like a plane taking off and suddenly I saw a big jet that appeared to be headed straight at me. I recoiled. When I came to my senses, I thought that the plane was in trouble or something, because it was flying so low. Initially I thought it was making an emergency landing, and I hoped it would attempt to land in the Hudson River in order to save lives. I tried hard to look inside the windows as it flew past the school building. It seemed very calm inside; I figured the passengers must be prepared and praying for a safe landing. But the plane picked up speed and steadied its course. It appeared it would fly right into the twin Chatham Towers apartments at Confucius Square down in Chinatown, but it stepped up its speed, and I thought the pilot regained control, and had to ascend in order to avoid the tall buildings, especially the World Trade Center buildings that it turned and flew towards. I crossed my fingers, hoping it would manage to fly between the two giants, but it hit the North Tower directly. It looked as though it disintegrated into glass fragments as it penetrated the building, but I saw it parked there, the tail black and set inside the black hole; then came the crash sound and I glanced over at my students. They were still copying from the board. I turned quickly back to the site and saw the fireball. I exclaimed, "Did you hear that?! Oh my goodness! An American Airlines 757 just crashed into the World Trade Center!" the kids said "Whoa... as they exited their seats to see what I invited them to look at. The black smoke began to pour out of the North Tower. The kids exclaimed, "WOW!" and were laughing. I retorted, "This is horrible. Do you realize hundreds of people have just been killed?!!" I walked over to look out of the classroom door and tell an adult to inform the principal. An English teacher was coming down the hall. I exclaimed to her, "My God, Laura, an American Airlines 757 just flew into the World Trade Center!" She continued walking towards the library, holding her cup of coffee and not bothering to look. I heard later that she announced to the library that I must be on drugs, because of what I told her. Since we had front row seats, and I knew this would be an historic event, I permitted all of my classes to view the disaster as it happened. Thank goodness we were too far away to see people dying. Everything appeared so clearly I wished it could have been a computer game, and not real. It was the most memorable witnessing in my life and it has haunted me every day since. Tell us your story: Before I break into story I would like to send out my deepest sympathy to the everyone who lost loved ones on this horrible day. To the firemen, police, cleanup crew, survivors, volunteers and anyone else who wanted to be there to help I can't be more thankful to you knowing that when things do go bad there will always be people to help. Like everyone else has mentioned it was a georgeous day. I was going to work and school at the time. I was at school in the morning. Same ol' typical day to us. I was tired and not feeling well so when they came in and told us the school was being evacuated I was quick out the door. Rumors where going around on the way out that there was a bomb threat at the Federal Building (which is right behind our school) so I didn't think anything of it. Figured they got bomb threats all the time and they were usually a hoax. On my way to the bus stop down the street I put my headphones on. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I haven't listened to Howard Stern in a while so I decided to put him on. I had no clue what was going on. It sounded like he had people outside walking around interviewing people but it sounded like pure chaos. I was on the bus catching bits and pieces trying to figure out what the hell was going on. I tried to call my dad at work and the line was busy so I tried to call mom and busy. I finally get through to find out what had happened. What scared my most was a plane hitting the Pentagon and one going down so close to home. Flight 93 must have flown right over Pittsburgh. I was sitting on the bus with my hands over my mouth and never in all my life did I just want to get home. I never realized how bad it was until I got home. My brother seen the whole thing on t.v. and told me what happened. He like everyone else thought it was an accident until the second plane came. I felt so bad for flying out of school that day. All it was the rest of the day or week I should say was radio and Fox news. Downtown Pittsburgh pretty much shut down and evacuated of course my job didn't. I had to call off. I was scared and not going anywhere unless it was near home. Besides I was really down in the dumps about everything going on. Dad got sent home from work too. We all stayed home that night. Some of my closest friends came down (one is now my boyfriend who's in the military) that night cause they weren't going to work. They brought some beer down and we sat on the back deck glued to the radio. We discussed so many things and how we felt and that did me the world of good. I cried and still do sometimes about what happened but never have I felt so lucky in all my life. To be home with my friends and family and to know that we were all safe and able to watch the sun set that night and being American meant more than having the greatest job, hitting the lottery, or having a dream vacation. It is so sad that it takes something like that to make you realize that everything you take for granted could all be taken away at any given moment. The one thing I'll also remember is how everyone wanted to help, the flags hanging everywhere and how if I go to a public event today (concert for example) I see so many people with some sort of patriotic shirt on. Things have definately changed in this country. I'll never forget how scared I was for a while that something else may happen, I just wanted to get so far away from the city as possible. And now this thought will be in my head for the rest of my life. What if something else happens? I have my say about people living in that part of the world but I will keep that to myself because I could get brutal. I pray we never see another day like that and I still pray for the victims, heroes and everyone else involved and to this day I still get choked up about it. GOD BLESS THE U.S.A!!!!!!!!!! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was awaken at home by a co-worker who called to tell me to turn on the TV because 2 planes had just hit the World Trade Center. I turned the TV on and was greeted with the news on all local channels. As I sat watching in disbelief, we talked for a few minutes on the phone and then I hung up, got up and got dressed. I continued to watch the news, flipping between channels to get the latest information. The images and details were being played over and over, and each time any new information came to light, even if it was speculation, it was immediately broadcast. At first, I had thought that it was some huge mistake, but after the Pentagon got hit, I knew we were under attack. I tried to call my girlfriend (now my wife) after getting dressed, but was unable to get through, and even the cell-phone wasn't able to connect. The fact that communication was interrupted at this time made me anxious, as the scope of the problem was now becoming very apparent. I kept trying and got through about 10 minutes later. I told her to turn on the TV, as she hadn't been watching the news. I explained to her what had happened up to that point. We stayed on the phone for a while, both watching the news. We watched as the towers collapsed, and at that time I told her that I wanted to come over to her house. The drive to her house (about a 20 minute drive), was eerie - you could see how affected everyone was that was on the road. There was no hint of inconsideration that is always present in some form when driving...people were stunned. We continued watching the news, which was constant, and I called into my job (which is in downtown Chicago), to see what the status was there. At first I was told not to come in as they were closing, but a short time later, my boss paged me and informed me that they needed a skeleton staff there, and that I was to come in. After I told my girlfriend that I had to go into work later in the day, she exclaimed "Is he crazy???" I did head into work later, and since I work only a few blocks away from the Sears Tower, I was constantly wondering when, or if, IT was going to be hit. This was even more prevalent in my mind as we kept hearing in the news about how one of the planes was thought to have been headed for Chicago. By this time, though, the FAA had grounded all flights, but this didn't provide any relief as there could have been other ways to attack Chicago as well. Immediately after that day, I saw tons of US flags displayed on cars all over the city, including my own a week later or so. And on two occasions in the weeks to follow, in the northern night time sky, I saw what probably gave me the most feeling of security ? the afterburners of jet fighters as they flew on patrol. One moment the strange light from the afterburner caught my eye, and as I watched, the next moment it winked out. Tell us your story: While looking at the news online in disbelief, and quietly asking my spouse to come look at the picture posted of the tower, my spouse (who was standinding near me) was yelling at me to look at the tv news he had just turned on. In shock, I'll I could say was hurry up, we have just enough time to go vote before going into work. The shock, though lessoned by a years time, has yet to wear off.
