I had just shut off the radio because there were only talk shows on and put a tape in the player. After I had gotten to work I heard about the first Twin Tower. My first reaction was are you for real....after the second Twin Tower was hit we all knew there was something serious going on. My first thought was to my son then in Newport News, VA aboard the USS Nimitz. Would he have to go to war....he was only 20 at the time. My second thought was to my children....are they okay? What have they heard so far and are they frantically worried about their brother? My son called me from the ship to let know he was okay but was not sure what really was going on. I only had to work for a few hours that day and left for home at 11. When I got home my 15 had called and left several messages worried about her brother....my 18 year son also called from college for me to go get him early. My younger children really did not understand much of the situation except that something bad had happened and that their brother in the Navy was not far away from where it had happened. We all talked about what happened, watched the news report but still could not believe such a thing could happen. When we went to bed that night....my 18 year old came into the room in a panic saying there were planes flying overhead...... The feeling of security was gone........ Tell us your story: I had just finished teaching my 7:30 a.m. English 302 (Advanced Composition) class and was at my desk for Tuesday office hours. Colleagues at NCC came into 416 Enterprise (we academic advisors call our office space the "bull pen" because 7 of us have office cubicles crammed into this room), announcing that the first World Trade tower had been struck by a plane. Very soon most of the NCC office staff/faculty were gathered around the TV in the computer lab on this floor. We watched, stunned, while a plane hit the second tower. Then more news about the Pentagon, possible strikes on other buildings in D.C. Faculty/staff came and went, returning to their desks to call spouses, friends, relatives who might have been involved. Tell us your story: I was at work that day and had just gone outside on my 9:00 am break when a friend came outside and told us that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center Towers. None of us knew what to think and honestly our first thoughts were not terrorism. When we went back inside our office building the looks on peoples face as they listened to their radios through headphones gave us all a very bad feeling. I sat down at my seat and put my own headphones on. Tuning to a national news station I immediately heard the newscaster exclaim, "My God! A second plane has just hit the other Trade Center towers!" As the longest hour in history passed everyone in the office sat pale faced listenind helplessly as another plane hit the Pentagon and yet another crash landed in Pennsylvania. People began crying and praying as we were told that the towers were collapsing and there was no way everyone had evacuated yet. At about 2:00 pm we were instructed to go home and be with our families. It wasn't until I got home that I actually saw what happened..saw the planes tear the builings in half like a piece of paper.....saw the gaping hole in the side of one of country's most prized possesions..and saw just a huge smoke cloud and the charred ground in someones own backyard. I was awaken at approximately 6:30 a.m. to the news broadcast that the Trade Center had been hit by an airplane. I jumped out of bed and turned on the television and much to my horror I caught the broadcast showing the first plane hitting then the second one hitting. I woke my son up and had him sit with me. We sat and held hands and cried. I told him that we had to attempt some type of normalicy even in the tragedy. As we were driving to school, we saw several children playing on the playground of a school. It looked so incredibly surreal. It reminded me just how safe we feel in America. And now in these troubling times, I wonder just how safe we really are. As a result of 9/11, I now have an idea of what it must be like to live where buildings and homes are being bombed. We were in art class and the principal came over the P.A. and told us that two planes had crashed into two twin towers. Some of the boys in my class laughed because they did not know that it was an act of terrorism. We left the art room and went into our homeroom, the television was on and my homeroom teacher was in tears. We watched the TV, over and over again we saw the planes crash into the towers. No one said anything. We heard that a plane had crashed into the pentagon and heard that another had been hijacked. We all sat in wonder thinking what could be next? We left school at 12:00 and it was caos. There were people who have family in New York and were scared out of there minds! I for one have family in Queens. My great aunt was in the St. Vincents Hospital for twelve hours that day. I went home and no one was there. I tried to call my mom's cell phone but it would not go through. I opened up my lunch box and started eating my lunch while watching the news. Then all of a sudden a door slamed in the back of my house. I was home alone and scared out of my mind. I grabed my dog by the collar and ran down to the bottom of the driveway and sat there and cried for an hour. I was scared and confused. I was just a kid during these tradjedies and I felt like I couldn't do anything to help. No one was there for me while I was crying to comfort me. Well my mom got back from picking up my brother and sister and driving some friends home and I told her all about what happened. I went inside and went back to the bathroom door, the one that had slammed, and I opended and saw that a window had been opened and the wind had blown it open. Well since that day I have been stronger in my faith. I knew God could make something good come out of something so terrible. Everytime we drive down a road we see a whole bunch of flags. America has pulled together and become stronger since that tragic day. My sympathy is out for all the families of the victoms. Well I guess this is the end of my story, thankyou! Upon entering the restaurant, people were gathered looking up at the TV mounted overhead in the lobby. It brought me back to Pearl Harbor when my parents were gathered around the radio that day. I own a regional employee's assistance company. We provide crisis intervention and critical incident plus many other services to industry. We provide services to five casinos plus other industry in the area. Over twenty years we have had many incidences, not of this magnitude, but serious, and are quite experienced in delivering emergency services. During the days that followed, our staff were everywhere. By the third day we were called to help by Blue Cross and other companies to deliver Critical Incident and Post Trauma intervention for companies they service. Although we are totally credentialed, it was apparent the insurance companies didn't care as long as we would go and help. It was that serious. I've never actually measured our experiences in the area of CISM as we never had a baseline like this one! At least we were familiar with the like of services needed. When I read about some therapists being shocked about helping in the situation on the 11th of september 01, I am frightened for their patients. Many write about their insecurities in the trauma site. I wonder how they can actually treat effectively without including the "real" world experience of their patients. I hope Bush steps up to the plate in time. We had to plan how to protect our guests and team members. We knew that our guests who had departed that day, really had no way to get out of NY, so we anticipated their return and held their rooms for them. That left few rooms for new guests to purchase. I stood in our lobby that day and turned away rooms for thousands of people. I saw people of all walks of life, many of whom had just walked from the WTC area, even guests of those WTC hotels. I felt helpless. But, even as the Towers came down, I never once stopped to think that I should be scared, that our city was in danger, or that I was in danger. Contemplating, I looked ahead as one of our history teachers presented herself in the doorway with tears in her eyes. She frantically told us to turn on the television, for a plane had just flown into one of the Twin Towers. With that being said, the TV was on and we all stared in disbelief at the gaping hole that scarred one of the buildings. Various thoughts began running through my head: ?Do I know anyone that works in one of those buildings, was that done intentionally, who could do such a thing, is everyone going to be able to get out of there?? We will never be able to have a full understanding of what was running through the minds of those terrorists as they performed those horrific acts upon our American soil. We can only hope and pray that justice will be served, that the mastermind behind this tragedy will be found and punished accordingly, and that we can all remain strong and pull through as one. We had a makeshift antena and only could see two fuzzy stations. That morning my wife was home from work with the flu. I did not have work, I was working every other day. She ran upstairs and woke me to tell me the World Trade Center was on fire. We had no idea it was an attack. Once we realized I watch the coverage for about 5 hours. All air traffic was shut down. That night we heard airplanes overhead which was enough to cause a slight panic. They were military craft on the way to Niagara Falls Air Base. Also local National Guard was being mobilized to ground zero. I was teaching at Fredonia State College at the time. The next day I had one less student, as she was one of the guard sent to aide in rescue efforts at ground zero. She was worried about her grade in my course as she left to defend the country and sift through the rouble for human beings. I told the other students she more than earned her "A." I sold vacation packages to people in the U.K. I was in the middle of a call when the person on the other line stopped me in mid sentence and said, "Are you crazy?!?!? You are being bombed!" And the hung up. I looked around the room to see if any of the managers were monitoring my call. Then another worker said, "Turn on the radio, something is going on!" We listened to the radio, all I can remember thinking was this is not happening. I went home from work and the first thing I did was turn on the t.v. I watched all day in shock with my roommate. It wasn't until about ten or eleven o'clock at night that I found out that my father had been in the first building. His name is, Maynard S. Spence, Jr. He was on the 101st floor. I didn't believe it. I thought my mother was going dillusional. I tried calling his cellphone and I couldn't get through. I got scared, thinking why me. I hardly new him. Even though he had been in my life for almost 18 years, I still fill as if there was so much more that I missed or hadn't learned from him. Like there was more that he was supposed to tell me or like he was supposed to be here to see me grow up and see my accomplishments in life. This was so unexpected. I was at home that morning deciding what to wear to my new position as a Sr. Project Manager with WorldCom. I was to start my new job the next morning. As I was looking through my closet the news was on in the background. To my horror the story began unfolding. I live in Long Beach, NY and many hundreds of NYC Firemen live in town. Many of my close friends were firemen. My biggest fear was Larry. Larry is a NYC fireman and a very close friend. We were in the beginnings of a romantic relationship and I had no idea what had become of him. All I knew was that the towers had collapsed and thousands of people were dead. September 11, 2001 was a bad enough day for me but it was the next day that was hell on earth. I still had to report to my new job with all the enthusiasm that is expected. The office that I was to work for was out on Long Island and far enough from the tragedy that very few people had been personally effected. It is never a good idea to bring your personal life to work and would be completely unacceptable on your first day. So to work I reported. I stood and shook hands with my new colleagues with a smile mask on my face. Took up residence in my new office and fought off tears every minute. It was all I could do to not run from the building crying. I was not only still missing Larry but many other firemen friends as well. The news went on and on about how many firemen were feared dead. So, for me the 12th to 14th were the worst days while I forced myself to go about my business while I waited for word on Larry and friends. Larry finally called me on Friday. It was the first chance that he got. They were all down at ground zero 24/7 and he was unable to call until then. So now on Sept 11, 2002 I'm sitting in my office as I remember those days and await another layoff. This has been an interesting couple of years for me. I have been personally survived many history making events from the dot.com collapse to the trade center collapse to the WorldCom collapse. But I am still here and still looking forward with enthusiasm and hope. As the songs says, "you can't take that away from me". It was my cousin calling and telling me that a plane just crashed into both towers of the world trade center, and another one into the pentagon. There was speculation of other planes possibly being hijacked as well. I was home alone with my 6 month daughter, as my husband Tim had just flown into Los Angeles the evening before on business. I immediately called him, and we talked several times throughout the day about the events. I was very frightened, just sat in front of the tv all day and hugged Camryn. Another friend called me & told me I better get gas, because the prices were going up, some places rumoured to be over $6 a gallon. The lines at the closest gas station stretched almost a block. Afterward several local gas stations were cited for price gauging. I felt a strong need to be with family, and cried to my husband, and he ended up being stuck in Los Angeles for days, and of course I was nervous about him flying the day commercial airlines took to the skies again. I talked to my friends and family all day, watched tv and cried. I cried for the victims in the buildings, for the police officers and fireman who went in to rescue them and never came out, and for the passengers in the airplanes, who knew what their fate would be, and also for all their families. Tell us your story: I had been at work for approximately 30 minutes when I passed through the living room where several residents were watching television. The first trade center had been hit but I did not realize what had happened. Just then another employee named Tim walked up and ask what was gong on and I told him one of the World Trade Center Towers was on fire. We continued watching and then the news came on about the Pentagon. We were just standing there trying to put everything in perspective when the plane flew into the second tower. Nothing seemed real. I wasn't sure if I wanted to cry, run aor even throw up. Then the towers collasped. It was hard to imagine how anyone could have gotten out. Thank God for the ones that did and have mercy on the sould of the ones that did not. From that moment on for almost two full days I was glued to the television every minmute I could be. Sometimes I felt like I was the only one around experiencing all this. It was like the world had stopped and this was the only thing going on. But was it real? How could anyone have so much hate for another human being to decide that their life should end so selfishly. I wanted so bad to call my dad so he could tell me everything would be okay and take care of me like he had always done, but that was not to be. I lost my dad earlier that year to a heart attack. So I had to be strong for myself and depend on myself. In my own way I did talk to my dad and I felt he was there looking after me. I felt so lost and empty. Wishing there was somthing I could do and knowing there was nothing anyone could do. It is hard for me to imagine how someone can get control of your thoughts and laed you into self distruction. What did they prove by taking so many innocent lives with them. It did not make them heroes. It is very sad that they cared so little for the loved ones they left behind, but then they belive so different than we do. I am proud of our armed forces and the job they are doing. The united States has always opened they doors to all who want to enter. I have said for years that we would one day be in another war and it would not come from across the seas but from our own back yard. I guess in a sense it did. I was just about to leave when someone came in saying that a plane hit the World Trade Center in New York. She heard this on the radio. The first thought that popped into my mind was "It's only a movie. They always do something like that to New York City." I was so wrong. I got in my car and headed off to my class at Salem State College. On my way to school I heard that another plane had crashed into the second Trade Center Building. I was in shock this was no movie promo this is real life. When I got to school and parked I was about to head into the building. Someone stopped me and told me to turn around and go home. I asked why. They told me that the school was being shut down, all classes in session were being let out and classes that day were canceled. I couldn't believe it. I sat there on the Salem State quad while a few of us students talked about what happened and listening to the radio. I immediatly called my mom and dad. My mom works for the school system for the city I live in and I wanted to make sure that there were no threats for them. She assured me she was okay and she would let me know if anything changed. I then called my father, who is a firefighter. He told me that they were on alert and a few of the cities firefighters might have to be sent over to help. I was horrified. He called me a few minutes later and told me that we were too far away and that they weren't sending anyone from this area. I proceed to go to work. It was erie at work. I work at a drycleaners and there was absolutly no one there. a few were sent home earlier, others were huddled around the radio listening to events, and others were next door at the restaurant watching it live on TV. It was really scary. When I got home my family and I huddled around the TV. All I could do is cry and cry. I went to a church service the next evening and couldn't believe that it happened. Any candle light vitals that were being held I tried to attend. I thought it necessary to show my support any way I could. I stood in line to give my blood for over 5 hours! On this One Year Annaversary, All those thoughts are coming back. At 8:46 a.m., Salem State joined the nation and world in a minute of silence for those lives that were lost on this horiffic day. Just a few weeks before I took a home pregnancy test and found out I was pregnant. I had scheduled an ultrasound on Sept. 11 to find out how far along I was. I had to be at the Dr. Office at 8:30 am CST. I was in the process of getting my ultrasound when in the next room, which was the nurses station, a radio was turned up really loud. We over heard the DJ on the radio reporting the events that had just happened. When the ultrasound was over, I was in the restroom getting dressed my husband was standing in the hallway listening to what was going on. The nurses were crying, and scared. And I was terrified when my husband filled me in on what had happened. I was thinking, here I am pregnant, and having a 3 year old daughter as well to raise. What were we going to do? My husband and myself had to get back to work after the doctors visit. All the way home we listened to the radio in the car and couldn't believe what was happening. Even though we were in Texas at the time, we were still scared at what was happening. It could of very well been Palestine Texas that had gotten hit! When I returned to work, my fellow co workers were just amazed and in aww of what was going on. They didn't really know what had happened. They had heard on someone's radio that the Twin Towers had been hit, but nothing was thought twice about it. They assumed it was an accident. And right before I returned, our computer technician, Wil, had told them that America was under Attack. For the rest of the day we were glued to our radios. Wondering if we should go get our children and families and return home to be with them. For we didn't know if the whole country was going to be bombed by senseless acts of terror. But we all decided to stay and finish the day. After work, I went and picked up my 3 year old from daycare. She is and still is too young to understand what has happened. But I think I hug her more every day now, and try to be closer to her than ever before. By the way, on Sept. 11. 2001. at the Dr. office, I found out I was 11 weeks pregnant. And now a year later I have a son. Who I love dearly. Whom I charish, and love very much. I have 2 children to raise in a time of war. A time when work is scarce, and money is tight. We were never rich, but we were getting by. When I was 7 months pregnant, I was laid off. The company I worked for went bankrupt. I lost my insurance, I lost my job. But we have survived with only one income, because we are grateful that my husband didn't loose his job. Because we believe in the Lord and if we help ourselves he will help us.
