Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had gotten off an overnight shift at American Medical Response where I am a 911 Dispatcher at 0630. My normal routine was to come home, change, and unwind so I could go to sleep. Just minutes before the North Tower was struck, I had sat on the bed to watch Good Morning America. The North Tower was struck, I sat in disbelief. Minutes later the second tower was struck; my heart sunk, I began to shake and cry. I phoned my kids and husband at work to tell them what had happened and continued to sit frozen watching the tragedy unfold. Knowing I wouldn't sleep that day, I quickly showered and went back to work to lend whatever help I could. I then worked my regular shift where I dispatched ambulances to the New Haven area and kept in touch with those we dispatched to New York. I am also an EMT-I for Stratford Volunteer Emergency Services. When I did my next shift, two days later, my partner and I realized we were being treated much differently. People were telling us to go ahead of them in line, we staring at us, were moving to let us pass. It was a very strange feeling and not one we were totally comfortable with. We, like all those who perished love what we do. We don't look to be treated differently than anyone else. This is what we chose to do. Tell us your story: I do marketing for an auto dealership in Southeastern, MA, and was going about my morning when suddenly one of my Service Advisors burst into the office shouting, "A plane just hit the World trade Center!" "Terrorism?" I asked, a chill going down my body... "No, can't be", he responded, "Probably just some inexperienced pilot". As we ran to our customer lounge, all doubt was removed as we watched the building burst into flames. I was sick with worry - I have friends and family in the area! As the day went on and tragedy unfolded, the entire office ground to a hault. Customers and employees alike hovered over my shoulder, as I was the only one in the office with an Internet connection. "CNN is down! MSNBC is down!" I told impatient onlookers. "Let me try projo.com" [Projo.com being the Providence journal website]. Projo.com was up, but the images were terrifying. I called my brother down in South Orange, NJ - an hour from the scene. He had only moved there two weeks before, from Boston. Was he okay? He was, but he informed me they were evacuating Boston, as a precautionary move. The day passed in a blur, and when I got home, I couldn't take it anymore. I turned on The Disney Channel, just to get away from those horrible images; to hope that it was only a dream. My Mom came home and yelled at me for watching Disney, as if I didn't care...but soon enough, she , too, had her fill of the rubble, fright, and anger that now filled her heart. A phone call came that night - my cousin, Michael, an E-4 in the US Navy was not coming home. His ship, the USS Phillipine, had turned its course back to the Persian Gulf. Our country had gone to war, and my 22 year old cousin - the baby of my family - was on the front lines, and almost on the front page of USA Today. Pictures of bombs being set off made cover pages, and just outside the frame was Michael, standing next to the sailor who was "pushing the button". Michael is safe at home now, and my lost loved ones are accounted for...I guess I was one of the lucky ones...yet, how does a nanny explain to her young charges what is happening? How does an auntie explain to her nephew and niece that we are at war against an unseen enemy? How do we go back to the innocence we lost? Not all deaths are physical...the toll was much higher that day than newsgroups reported. The death toll will never be totally accounted...for there are those that still live who have died inside. I remember walking down the hall at work and another teacher was coming towards me telling me a plane hit one of the towers. At first I thought it was a small plane or the wing of a plane had just tapped it. As I came closer to the science office, the department chair was telling teachers exactly what had happened. I had a prep period at that momment, so I walked along with a few teachers down to the security office were there was a t.v. As we entered the security office, the second tower was hit. At that moment, everything stopped for me. I could not believe my eyes. No one moved. A few minutes later the bell rung and I went to my next class. Appromixately fifteen minutes later, the principal came on over the loud speaker and told school what had happened. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My husband and I had just returned from Corona del Mar (San Diego) the day before and we took an additional day off from work. I got up early and turned on the television and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I saw a man in a business suit falling out of a large tower building. I initially thought this was a film technique and not real. As I continued to watch, I was overcome with utter disbelief and couldn't imagine what was happening was real. I sat transfixed to the television when the 2nd plane hit the towers and literally couldn't believe what was happening. My husband came wandering into the livingroom asking why I was up so early and after seeing my expression on my face, he turned his head to the television and stared transfixed to what was taking place. He questioned what happened and immediately the broadcaster started speaking about what was unfolding before our eyes. In my entire life, I never imagined being witness to such hatred and war although I read many stories in history books during my school years. We all assume that those days were in history and would never occur again. I cannot say how much impact seeing what was happening changed my way of thinking and how we live. I was gripped with sheer fear and didn't know what to do. Shortly thereafter, the entire sky in Southern California ceased with planes with the exception of a lone jet fighter passing overhead. People were transfixed and traffic on the streets was non-existent. Businesses closed and people were rushing home to their families. For the next several hours, everybody's life was changed and our normal day-to-day life seemed like a faint memory because all that was important was being with family and loved ones and comforting one another. September 11, 2001 changed my life, my way of thinking and my entire outlook of life. I cherished my family and friends and realized they were far more important than anything else. People seemed to feel the same and within a short time, American flags were being displayed proudly outside of homes, businesses, on cars, on clothing, everywhere you looked people became united. This day will forever be etched in my mind and one that completely taught me what was really important and life was a gift that should be cherished. I pray that those who bravely lost their lives that they didn't do so in vain, but will be remembered forever in history. I got up made my way to school and joined in on all of my classes I left my second period class to call my golf pro to schedule a lesson later on that day. He informed me that a plane had just hit the World Trade center. My first thought was that something malfuctioned with the plane and it accedtally hit the tower. I went back to class and was the first person to inform my class and teacher of what happened. We did not know too many details at the time, so we used all the resorces at our disposel to find out information. We later found that another plane had hit the second tower. We knew somethig terrible had happened, but it did not truly sink in untill we heard about the plane that crashed at the petagon. Many of our parrents work in and around this very important buliding, in cluding my father. A small panic went arround our school as many students tried to contact their parrents, most were unsucsessful because of the multitude of calls being sent. I did not get a hold of my father untill I got home 6 hours later. I found that he was on his way to the White House, the suspected original destination of the plane. I was lucky that I personaly did not know any one who was hurt in the attacks of September 11, 2001. I send my best wishes to all of those people who were personaly affected by the attacks. My daughter had just started kindergarden the week before. My son Joshua was two. My children were too young to understand what had happened, and I did not know how to explain it. when you have two young children their mentallity of the world is inoscent. We were testing, and after you were done you could leave the room and go to the front office where there was a television. Suddenly someone came into the class and announced the WTC had been attacked. We all ran to the tv room. I couldn't belive it, it just couldn't be true, this sort of thing happens in other countries, not here in the United States. I immediately thought of family that lives in DC and NY. I listen to the radio as I work and could not believe that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I informed my co-workers what had happened and thought how bizarre for a passenger plane to crash into a building. This anger needs to be directed toward the perpetrators of these horrific and cowardly acts of extreme malice toward mankind. The whole world is involved in this terrible loss of life and liberty. We as a global community are challenged to overcome these dissidents of normal life. You can find evidence of non-humanistic practices anywhere in the world. All we can do as citizens is to put trustworthy persons in position to make decisions that will assure benefit to all people who live normal lives. We have taken a firm stance against the injustice dictated on the inhabitants of those less fortunate. To maintain and further the development of the peoples involved in the current conflict is an admirable objective. We cannot overlook the beliefs that people hold, in their pursuit of "The Almighty", the one true God that all profess to believe in. In Afghanistan many rights have been taken from the citizens. The rights of all individuals have been pressed to the breaking point. There has been so much suppression of the human endeavor that outbreaks of individual expression should be expected. While this should be considered as a release of pent up frustrations, acts of brutality need to be halted. For too long people have professed to be followers of God's teachings and have failed to show that in action. The true love of God is within us all as we are all part of the family he created to carry out his will. How we carry out this charge is of our own free will and within his making. If all of us stop and truly think of the blessings that God has given us, it is not that difficult to realize how lucky we truly are. Acts of "Terrorism" and suppression of human rights should not be tolerated in our society today. Fanaticism and driven righteous acts carried out in the name and supposed beliefs of God are not the answer to these problems. Too often the perpetrators of theses acts have no idea of what the true idea of belief in God is. So the bottom line is be aware of what you believe and accept what others believe, but do not allow either to inflict harm. Every individual has it within them to make this a better place to live. Differences of opinions and beliefs' are not excuses to target the members of your family in a destructive manner. Any action taken against another based upon these differences alone is inhumane. All injustice toward people should draw attention from the members of our family. These injustices can not be allowed to continue on their own paths' of destruction. We as a family must protect all of our children and not accept the attempt to remove their childhood and development by placing them in harm, or by twisting their belief of their own existence. It has become necessary to take action against the inhumane treatment that mankind has inflicted upon each other, and many will die. All through our miniscule history on this planet we have exhibited the very essence of what has allowed us to survive this long. What we have to believe in is the future of our children and the safety of their children. Better times will come for them and we must try to protect that time. I attempt to write these ideas based upon the teaching of Abraham and his belief that all should be treated as family. His idea that violence toward a family member was a disgrace is now more than ever applicable. I am ashamed of the members of our family that draw their strength from the oppression and manipulation of others. The idea of violence toward others based upon religious belief is absurd and totally irrational. The practical teachings of our fathers do not bear witness toward justification of this action. It is time to wake up and see what is really needed in our world. The time has arrived to take positive action against the Jackals' that would claim the world as their own. Put aside your individual beliefs' and think of those that follow. Their poison can infect all that they contact and persuade others to the warped ideal of what they believe. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I went to bed on 9-10 thinking how cool it would be if my sister in law were to go into labour and have my niece. My brother's birthday is 9-11 and she and I share the same birthday and I thought it be cool if it happened. My great aunt came upstairs to wake me up on 9-11 and I was like awesome my niece was born, but instead I heard that the Pentagon and World Trade Center were bombed. I thought no big deal some damage and people are hurt. Then about 45 minutes later she came up and said to get out of bed that 3 planes had crashed. That made me run downstairs and she had heard from my mom saying that she was stranded in Colorado and that her and my dad were driving back. My mom was suppose to fly into Washington DC that day. I waited for her to call back because she was calling to see where my uncle was, who had worked in the Pentagon and still works with the US Army. She called and said my uncle was fine and he was on his way home from DC. (later on I would find out that 3 of his co-workers were killed when they were attending a meeting at the Pentagon and he also knew a general killed) I talked to my mom and was glued to the TV. I watched in horror as the 2nd plane hit in replays and the towers collapsing. You can only watch so much of it and we went out to dinner that night and got away from the TV. I am so grateful that no one I knew was affected by this, but you hear the stories of those who were less fortunate and you wonder how they spent their last moments. 9/11 to me will always be my brother's birthday, no matter what will happen in the years to come. He celebrated his 26th birthday on the 1 year aniversary and has a beautiful 17 month child who came just 18 days later. I have many things to be thankful for and God bless my family that day and many others. I was in the process of issuing my first citation, when a man shouted, "How can you give us a ticket when they just attacked the World Trade Center again". I immediatly turn on my radio and tuned in. Hearing the news, I couldn't believe my ears. I then called everyone I knew in Milwaukee, Chicago and New York. My New York friends who worked in the Trade Center were ok. Just arriving to work 115 floors below, in the mall basement, they immediatly left the area and headed towards China Town. Everyone else was okay too. The day was full of both grief, awe, and hate. My first stop during every New York was a trip to the top of The World Trade Center. It was a view that could never be duplicated anywhere else. I will miss that view, the ride to the top and those who perished. It was ans still is like loosing a dear dear friend and family member. I hope in time that the buildings will be replaced exactly as they once proudly stood. Both as a sign of stregenth, defiance and as a living Memorial to all those who perished 11, September, 2001. That would be a true fitting memorial. Let those who perished and were never recovered, guide and protect the New World Trade Center. My father was supposed to be there that day for a meeting. And although my love lived in cleaveland, his father worked at the port authority. I couldn't get through to my father. I called Chris's mother. and asked if she was alright. My sister called me telling me that our very close family friend Ed Miller was probably dead. He worked on the 70th floor of tower two. He was the man who taught me my favorite game. he came to our holidays. he had a wife and a family. what would they do with out him? I could not deal wiht the flood of emotion I was feeling. I wanted to give blood, but they didn't want it at that point. Traffic was too heavy. The incomming flood of patients was too great. What would happen to the people responsible? What would happen to their associates. How do you deal with a situation in which you are completely helpless? You can't. So i went to the gym to work off my fear. It did very little. I had my cellphone glued to me the whole time, trying to get in touch with my brother in boston, my boyfriend in cleaveland, and my father in new york. most lines were down. that night I found out they were all fine. Ed, who had been told to go back to his desk after the first strike, evacuated against orders, and walked down the 70 flights of stairs. My love's father had luckily been sent to brooklyn that morning in business. My own father in the traditional New Jersey predicament was on the New Jersey Turnpike stuck in traffic. He saw the planes crash in two towers from the road. its been a while since then, but its not something one easily forgets. I wasn't even 18. Now I am 20. Not much older, really. I still feel like a little girl. Everything thats happened should be left in the past. We should be given the opportunity to heal, but nothing has happened but a need for revenge. I witnessed the hate and the abuse of the Muslims on our very diverse college campus, and i was ashamed to be an american. Today, we are going after Iraq. Being a Jewish American, I am not about to complain. However, the government has wanted to do this for years, and never had just cause to enter. Tell us your story: On tuesday September 11, 2001 I only had two classes that morning, so when I came home, at about 8:45, after hearing the announment from our principle in my English class that two planes had just struck the World Trade and Pentagon, I really didn't think too much about it to be honest. I just figured it was another small bombing or something of that sort, until I flipped on the TV and saw what was going on. But even then, watching it all occur live, right before my own two eyes, I still didn't believe it. Maybe it was too much Hollywood influence or just flat out shock, but either way I just sat glaring in front of the TV for hours at all that was going on so many thousand miles away. I saw each tower come down live and people running in shear terror, but it still did not register. I remember going back for football practice and having it cancelled, then coming home under spooky, airplaneless sky's, something I've never witnessed in my entire life. It was just too quiet. That night my family and I talked about it for a long time over dinner, but the reality still hadn't sunk in. Days of coverage turned into weeks and weeks into months, but the reality never really hit me. Then, in about January I was flipping channels one night and came across another September 11th special and for some reason I decided to watch it for a few mintutes because they were doing a music video type segment. One picture struck me so hard I'll never forget it as long as I live. It was supposedly a color photograph of a firefighter covered in ash literally from head to toe and he was down on one knee with one hand on the ground and two tears streaming down his face through the ash. That's when the reality of it all finally hit me. That just doesn't happen. New York City firefighters, New York's Finest, dont sit down and cry when something goes wrong, it just doesn't happen! So, that's when I truly realized the significance of it all and I'm not even able to describe the feelings of emotion I felt that day and never will. Like many people I had an inmage in my head of a little prop plane bouncing off of the building and the sad notion that a few people may have been killed. Little did I know...I entered Julie's home to go on with my day, and saw the live footage on the today show. This was worse than I had pictured, and this woman I have never met was standing there with tears in her eyes telling me her brother worked in the adjacent building. I didnt ever pay any attention to the WTC so I had almost forgot there were two towers.....Thats when the 2nd plane streaked across the screen. I remember standing there stunned for what felt like hours, realizing this woman may be watching her brother die on live television, feeling out of place in her home, figuring out that this was no accident, and wanting to call my wife and new baby to ensure their safety all at once. She was in a similar frame of mind I am sure, so we did the only thing that came naturally, embraced and cried. I spent 4 hours at her home that morning. We are friends today, brought together by a horrible moment. She says I kept her sane through the worst moment of her life, but I think it may have been the other way around. Tell us your story: My one and only journal entry that I have written: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 | 6:37 p.m. When I woke up around 6:40, I went into my regular routine. I walked drowsily to the bathroom and took a shower. I got out, wrapped up in a towel, and searched the usual places to find clean clothes to wear. I chose a pair of shorts with a [San Francisco] 49er T-Shirt. Then I trudged over to the kitchen and finished off my pancakes from Sunday. I read the paper while I ate. After that I took my pills and brushed my teeth. Now that I was ready for school, I focused on other things that needed to be done. I had Mom get out the [high school's class schedule] booklet with all of the classes inside. I needed to find a one semester class to sign up for during 4th period in the second semester. I sat down with a notepad and wrote down classes that sounded appealing. [My brother], who was in his room with the door open, yelled, ?[Hey], turn on the news!? Though it sounded like something bad had happened, I didn?t know what it was about. So I ignored him. Then he came flying out of his room, saying, ?Turn on the news!? I realized he was headed toward the TV and half-walked, half-ran towards the TV. [My brother] had the channel on MSNBC. The World Trade Center had collapsed. ?Oh, dang,? I said, taken aback by the video clips of the tower collapsing. I ran into Mom and Dad?s bedroom to find Mom. [My brother] was right behind me. We found her sitting on the floor by her bed, looking through papers. We told her the news, and the shock was evident upon her face. We all went back into the family room to find out more. The details flowed in slowly. I heard about two planes crashing in. I heard about the Pentagon being struck. But the whole situation was so bizarre that it was still hard to fathom the devastation that had just occurred. When it was almost time to go to school, we had just found out that 50,000 people worked at the World Trade Center. I was flabbergasted. Incredible, I thought. [I figured at least 40,000 were still in the building when it collapsed. I didn't realize that there was a long enough span of time between the hit and the collapse for most to get out.] But we had to get our stuff for school, so everyone grabbed her stuff and started to leave. Mom was, of course, a bit rushed, and [my sister] threw a fit while Mom was getting her ready for school. [My sister] was screaming, but I tried to ignore her and got into the car. On the way to school she still threw a fit, but we were soon at our ?drop-off point,? and my brother and I got out for school. I put my books in the Sunday School room [across the street from the high school] and headed to Geometry class with Mr. P. Everyone was already talking about the tragedy in class. Then PNN, the school?s own news team, came on with the announcements for the day. After PNN the discussion continued, as Mr. P looked on the Internet to try to find more information. I told everyone that I thought Osama Bin Laden was behind the attacks, since he had recently claimed that he would soon attack the United States. Mr. P found a report that said that a Palestinian group had claimed responsibility for the attack, but later he found another report denying that statement. A kid in class made some stupid joke about the attack, but Mr. P quickly put an end to that by getting angry at the kid for trying to make a joke about a tragedy. Mr. P went on with regular math class, though, and we reviewed for a chapter test tomorrow. My classes went on throughout the day, with everyone soliciting the opinions of their friends. Some of the teachers kept radios on to keep updated. Other teachers cancelled all plans for the day, choosing instead to let the class watch the news channels report on the situation. Such a thing happened in my 6th period class, Tech Core I. All afterschool activities were cancelled, and students were told both by teachers and over the PA system to go straight home after school--- don?t hang around. When I got home I sat down with [my mom and brother], watching the latest reports. In Tech Core, I had seen reports that the World Trade Center Building 7 was on fire and was likely to collapse. At home, I found out that indeed Building 7 did collapse. The video clip of the collapse was incredibly devastating. It had gotten to the point where I could no longer watch the buildings collapse. It was too sad. Palestinians, meanwhile, are celebrating in the streets of their country, and Osama Bin Laden is hiding out somewhere. I watched reports until about 4:30, when I left to work on homework. Even though a national emergency had erupted, I still had homework due tomorrow. I stopped briefly to watch President Bush address the nation. I also ate dinner, and then wrote this letter. The sadness that I feel today cannot be describe. America has been devastated. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It's was a great Tuesday in September. I work for an ad agency and we were in the beginning stages of our weekly Production Meeting when the phone rang. It was the president of our company, ironically enough, on the way to the airport to pick up his wife who was coming in from Florida. He asked to be put on speaker and said "Turn on the TV, we're being attacked! A plane just crashed in to the Twin Towers." Like most people, we were in utter shock and total disbelief. Images of a nuclear war instantly clouded my head. My only thought was "Holy shit. This is it. World War Three." Once we turned on the TV, we all sat there, silent, every so often asking "Why?" or "How?" Soon after that, I started making calls to my friends in Manhattan. One could see everything from her office and said the city was in utter chaos, even as far north as the Flatiron District (Chelsea). One friend lives across the river in Jersey City and had a perfect view of the the Towers. She was, as usual, late to get to work that day and heard the first plane hit. As she went to her living room, she started clicking off pictures, not really knowing what happened, just that there was a lot of fire and smoke. As she sat there watching the debris and fire, plane two came into full view and rammed right into the Tower. She told me on one of the few connections out that NY had that she felt it was some dream. Nothing seemed real. The whole day at work, all I could think about was Planet of the Apes, when Heston finds the Statue of Liberty on the beach. My mind reeled with anxiety about which building or city was next to get it. I seriously thought a nuclear bomb was set. This was way too planned and I just knew more evil followed. For the next 2 days, I stayed home, like most people, numbed by what I'd just seen. I was glued to the TV trying to get as many viewpoints as possible. I wanted answers, like most of us. While I was not a fan of Bush, I waited to see how this rich kid was going to handle this. W did a great job of assuring us everything would be fine, despite the tremendous loss. Not knowing how acts of war are strategized or formulated, I'm a bit let down that we cannot find OBL and we tolerate Saddam. Bush needs to step up and get the world's great nation back on top. We had our asses handed to us by some well-planned terrorists who don't work in our slow-moving beuracratic world. Time to look at how we do things so this doesn't happen again. With 9/11/02 coming soon, my faith in our country is not what it once was. I hope W or our entire government gets it together. Because we all know they are planning something else.
