Moments that fundamentally change our society as a whole, and more significantly, each of us as individuals. Pearl Harbor. Kennedy's assasination. "One small step" on the moon. The Challenger explosion. And now, September 11th. I find it hard to recall specific memories of that day. Instead I have a collection of vivid images; a mental collage leading up to two months when, for me, the world truly stood still. ....watching live as the second plane was swallowed by the second tower in a burst of flame....the clouds of ash billowing as the towers collapsed....the gaping hole in the pentagon....the wreckage of a plane in a lonely Pennsylvania field. It all took on such a surrealistic quality - these weren't the events of real life, but of Hollywood movies. Reality simply couldn't have any bearing on what Dan Rather and the other media voices of our generation were showing us on television. After all, how does one wrap their mind around 3,000 lives being lost in one fell swoop? If we add up every person we've ever known, its probably not half of that. 3,000? How does one fathom the knowledge of that many lives extinguished in an instant: the suddenly parentless children, the husbands and wives widowed, the childless parents? How does one count the tears? Everywhere you went, any direction you looked, you found fear, uncertainty, confusion. Strangers gathered in stores, gas stations, on the street. Not only to talk, but to feel the comfort of human companionship. Phones lines were overwhelmed. We called our friends, our families. Even those nowhere near New York - simply to make sure they were safe. I watched a nation go through the grieving process that first day and night. The shock, the pain, the tears, the anger. Noone I knew died in the tragedy, or was directly affected. But like everyone else I grieved as well. That evening, like everyone else, I ran to the gas pumps. Waiting in line that stretched for blocks. I stood beside my car, my wife at my side, our children in our arms, and listened on the radio as the president addressed a nation buried in fear. Every radio in every car was turned up, and his voice seemed to pour from the heavens. For the first time in my life, the world truly stood still. An elderly couple in the car next to us held tightly to each other. Behind us, a yound black couple stood together, hand in hand. A group of teenagers, a medley of piercings and hair colors, stood silent as well. People from all walks of life, converged upon a random place, united, silently clinging to one another as the world seemingly came apart around us. Age, race, and social status had finally become obsolete, albeit briefly. In a world based on 'hustle and bustle', something had finally happened drastic enough that even the very hands of time were forced to stop and take notice. September 12th arrived, and just as it had each morning since the dawn of time, the sun came up. 'The day after' had begun. People started to realize that the world was not ending, and that life must go on. Our president, shedding his cloak of controversy, became the leader he had to be,and told us to go about our lives as usual, that life must continue. And I, like most others, listened. I went to work. Driving through a major city, I witnessed something that, for the second time in as many days, caused my world to briefly stand still. Driving through this, and average midwestern city, I saw, each time I glanced up as I passed under an overpass, American flags. Waved by children, their parents, their grandparents. Friends and strangers at the same time, as we all had become. I stuck my arm out the window, two fingers pointed toward the sky in that universal gesture of greeting, unity , and peace. I listened as a radio announcer reported that in New York, there was NO crime. No looting. I heard as people called in, simply to send messages of love, unity, and patriotism to those around them. People I passed on the street no longer tried to avoid eye contact. They said hello, as did I. I shook hands with strangers. An old woman hugged me. We, as a people, were overwhelmed not only with patriotism, but with the love and caring that only comes from shared fear and loss. Halfway through my morning, I realized this wasnt a day for work. On the way home, the reality of events finally touched home for me. A nation lost its innocence on September 11th. America as a country was no longer invincible; but vulnerable. Never had an enemy dared to cross into our sacred borders - the thought that they could was a blow to the sense of safety and well being of every one of us. No longer were wars a thing we saw on television from half a planet away. They had come into our very front yard. Exposed to the most heinous evil most of us have ever witnessed, we, a nation seemingly predicated on violence and mistrust, responded by coming together. We as a people reached out, and for once in our history, we responded. I learned several things from 9-11. I learned that a hero isn't a visible politician, athlete, or actor. A hero is someone who gives their life for strangers. I learned that while our world seems most of the time to be a cold and lonely place, it truly isn't. Our world has a heart, and it beats deeply in us all. The true tragedy is that is takes something as devastating as this to bring it out......... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was sound asleep. I was tired from working the night before and college classes. The phone rang about 9 am. It was my niece, who lives nearby. She told me about the planes crashing into the World Trade Center. I couldn't believe it. I turned the television on and that is where I sat for days. I kept calling my sister and husband (whom were both at work), trying to keep them updated on the situation. All I could do was cry. I felt completely helpless and awful. They had cancelled classes that day and the next, which was a relief and I didn't have to work till the weekend. I remember sitting there thinking to myself, how awful, who did this? Why did they do this? and What does it mean? Well I came to realize it meant war. Then I suddenly became more aware that my other sister (from Texas) was in the army and I knew what it meant for her. I tried calling her most of the day but it just kept saying "All circuits are busy now, please try again later". Finally about 630 pm that night she called me, crying, as was I. She knew as well what it meant for her. She left this past March for Landstuhl Germany. She is a nurse in the army and is taking care of our wounded soldiers. Unfortunately she won't be home till March 2004. MY brithday is September 14th, needless to say that birthday in 2001 was one I will never forget. Tell us your story: My little sister and I were in our apartment that morning,about three months after we moved from the U.S.A, doing nothing in particular. Then my mom (who was in my grandma's apartment a few streets away) franticly called us saying something about airplane and buildings. We turned on the T.V but we didn't really understand what was happening until my mom came home, crying, shaking and eating a million bars of chocolate. I quickly called my best friend who was in Washington. It took forever to get through. She doesn't have a T.V and didn't even know what was happening before I told her. She didn't believe me. It was absolutely horrible watching the mothers, fathers, children, wives and husbands crying on live T.V for their missing loved ones. I will NEVER forget the sight of the people jumping out of the buildings. It was horrible. I had never seen something so DISGUSTING AND REPULSIVE as the Afganistans celebrating and cheering at the loss of so many Americans. It's been a little more than a year since the terrorist's attack, and every time I think about that day my heart breaks from all the people who lost family and friends from the attacks. I always have my radio on when all of a sudden they said a plane has just crashed into one of the world trade center buildings. i jumped up and ran to the back of the building because you can see the entire skyline of New York city. To my disbelief their was the building on fire with smoke filing up thru the air. As my co-workers looked in disbelief we saw the other plane fly right into the other tower as it exploded we screamed with horror saying "oh my god it this really happening, our mangers and dept heads were telling everyone to sit down and calm down. How can you tell someone to sit down after seeing something like that, this was not a movie we were watching, this was our country, our town being destroyed right before our eyes. As we still watched and listened to the radio for updates, we starred in horror as the 1st tower crumpled to the ground, shocked, angry, sad & horrified we just looked at each other and cryed. so many people just going about there day, some not even knowing what was happening. I'm 36 yrs old and never thought i'd see something so horrible in my lifetime, those people jumping trying to get away from the flames or people trapped above where the planes hit it's unimaginable. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, 2001 I remember sitting in calculus class in the classroom C-2 when the principal, Mr. Kemeza, came on the intercom and announced that terrorists had attacked America. Throughout the rest of the day at school I remember thinking and feeling very many things. The first was great sorrow for those who had been hurt or killed in the attacks that had happened. As the day went on I heard more information and a few rumors. I began to wonder whether the terrorists were still attacking places and if Boston would be a target. I became nervous because if the terrorists picked a site in Massachusetts it probably would have been Boston where I attend school or Plymouth, where my family and a nuclear power plant reside. Not far from out school is a large gas tank which, I remember my chemistry teacher telling our class the year before, if it was struck and exploded would probably wipe out BC High. I remember feeling nervous about impeding attacks wondering where my dad was because he works in Boston and where the rest of my family was. One other feeling that I remember from that day was anger. Anger that someone would do this to America to innocent people in the world trade center, the pentagon, the people on the planes and their families. Amidst the fear and sadness I took time to think about the people who had done this and how the US should find them and punish them. Tell us your story: i was at home listening to the radio getting ready for work, when it was interrupted with the news flash.. the first thing i thought of - was my 23 year old cousin, Matthew Carmen Sellitto who worked on the 105th floor for Cantor Fitzgerald. He has just received a promotion. He is my first cousin and my brother because i am an only child. he is my fathers godson and his brothers kid. My legs could not move fast enough to the kitchen where i could turn on the closest t.v. i then saw tower 1 on fire, i started to scream to my mother upstairs - mom, mom,,, the t.v. Matthew - i couldn't make full sentences... we watched together ..i called there to try and reach him at work... but the lines were busy. my father was at work... we called him as we did that - he was in a meeting - i sat and watched with the hopes he was in the other tower - as i thought that - the other plane slammed into tower 2. after that i felt as if my whole heart dropped out of me - i started to get enraged with anger and fear - saying where are they coming from why - those people? how??? my name is Danya Sellitto I am 26 years old and the rest of the day we spent at my uncle Matt & aunt lori's house in Harding, NJ. Where my uncle stated that at 8:57 am Matthew called home and said they were going to try and make it out, but if they couldn't he loved everyone , very much. you could hear the fear in his voice - part of his conversation was caught on the answering machine. I can not express enough to all those families - that the hurt can not be described. i miss my Matthew so much - he was the coolest, smartest and funniest young man you would love to meet. He really was handsome, our family is so tight - outsiders call the sellitto family -the brady bunch gang. My roommates and I were all sleeping when suddenly my neighbor came running into the room saying "turn on the news, shits getting fucked up!!" I apologize about the bad language. I completely ignored him because what he said sounded so untrue and made up. My neighbor then turned on the TV. I was still half asleep, but I managed to hear something about a plane being flown into the world trade center. Once I heard that, I jumped out of my bed and began watching the news. I had no clue on what was going on. My neighbor told me that two planes were flown into each of the world trade center twin towers and another into the Pentagon. The news then explained it was a terrorist attack. I couldn't believe my ears. As we continued to watch the news with live shots of the world trade center, I watched the two towers crumble to pieces. As I watched that happen, a feeling of sadness and anger came over me. I knew there were still people in the towers as they fell and kept wondering why anyone would ever do this to us or to anyone else. Why would people do this to one another? The whole situation sickened me. However, I do know that justice will be served. It's only a matter of time before that happens. I thought my co-workers were joking. Who could imagine The United States bing under attack in this day and age?? Shortly after that I turned on the television in my office and watched as the second Tower was attacked and The Pentagon. I was in complete shock. I have no family that was directly affected, but several friends that lost family members and close friends. I felt so lost and saddened that this atrocity happened. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was walking down 14th Street in Manhattan when the first plane hit. I didn't see it. I was getting my hair cut in an apartment when the second one hit. I didn't see it either. The woman cutting my hair got a phone call about 10 minutes after 9am. She kept saying, "You're kidding. No f***ing way." She turned on the television and we watched for the first time the footage of what was happening a little to the west and a little to the south of where we were. We watched the towers fall. We watched the Pentagon footage. We heard about the crash in Pennsylvania. I couldn't think or feel. I was shell shocked. We went to the roof of her building and watched the smoke slowly start to envelop the city. She took pictures of it to document history. I kept turning and staring at the Empire State building wondering if it was next, or what would be. We had heard there were four more planes still in the sky. I walked home to my apartment which is four blocks from the Empire State building, seven blocks from Grand Central Station, about eight blocks from the UN, and on top of the Queens Midtown Tunnel and I was afraid. People walked by me who were covered in World Trade Center debris and I wanted to reach out and touch them, just to see if this was all really happening. I tried to call anyone I could think of who might possibly be near what was now Ground Zero. I tried to call my family to let them know I was okay, physically. I had one of the only working cell phones and I could still only make one call out of one hundred dialed. Friends were emailing and calling from across the country, they were afraid. I spent two hours sitting by myself watching the coverage on television just crying. I sat outside my building smoking stale cigarettes, talking to neighbors. We still thought there were four planes in the sky. I couldn't even think about it. I was resigned that I might be involved in the scariest thing I could ever imagine. No, I couldn't imagine it. It is unfathomable to me that a victory can be achieved by a staggering civilian death toll. Then nothing else happened. We had to close our windows because the smoke was starting to blow uptown. The next day, 9/12, the streets in Manhattan were deserted. I walked in the middle of Avenues because it was a novelty but it only made me sadder. That night there was a bomb scare in the Empire State Building. They started to evacuate my neighborhood, but they never got to my building. I didn't wait. I packed an overnight bag and walked fifty blocks uptown to my friends apartment which was not near any terrorists targets that I could identify. Her parents came and got us and took us to New Jersey. It felt so removed. It was so nice. But I still felt like someone had jumbled up my insides and didn't put everything back where it belonged. I felt off, not myself, not like anything I had ever felt before. On 9/12 I had to go back to work. I ran an educational center for children and I had to go and be strong for them. It wasn't easy. It's still not. Yesterday was the one year anniversary. I went to a morning prayer/moment of silence in Washington Square Park. I posted a message on the Union Square Town Hall board they had. I never cried, but it was so sad. And I was fortunate to have not known anyone who was killed. Tell us your story: When i first heard about what happened it was the end of my drill team's morning rehersal, about 9:30 in the morning at circle (a tradition we do every day after practice where we make announcements and give each other compliments) our director, mrs loomis told us she had very important news. she told us that a plane had crashed in to one of the towers of the world trade center. at first we were all really surprised and at first and none of us really knew what to say, then as we were getting dressed for school in the locker room we had the radio on listening to the news and the updates, all day we kept hearing more reports about what happened and we were really worried about whether there was goign to be any more attacks, since we live in the capital of texas some people were afraid they'd try to blow up the capital down town. all in all it was a very surprising day, and not in a good way. My life had been so sheltered living in a town so small. Important things in history had happened before but nothing had ever affected me like what had happened on that cool day in September. I woke up just like any other day and I got ready for work. My mom needed the car so she dropped me off. As I did every morning I was hearing the radio, not expecting to hear anything different today. When I got off the car everything was normal, but that changed when I walked in the office. I was the first one there, so I did what I usually did. I turned on the lights, checked the fax, you know normal office things. I sat down at my desk and turned on my radio. And that's when I heard the words that would change my life forever. "A plane has crashed into the World Trade Center." "Yeah right", were the only words I could say. How could the radio people joke about something like that? But they sounded so serious and scared, terrified even. But how could that be true? How could a plane crash into the WTC? So I went and turned on the tv, and then I saw it with my own two eyes, as the second plane hit the second tower. And as I sat alone and watched that I cried. I cried for the people on the planes. I cried for the people in the buildings. And later when the towers collapsed I cried for the people who died and I cried for the people who had lost somebody. I cried for my unborn son and I cried for me. I cried for New York City and the U.S.A. But most of all I cried because the little happy world that I thought existed came tumbling down. My world, the place where there was a place for everybody was destroyed on that fateful day. I couldn't understand how someone can have so much hate and anger at something and hurt all these innocent people. But I understand now, because the hate and anger that those people felt toward us is the same way I feel towards them now. But I know that hate is not the answer, being united is. But it saddens me to know that something like this had to happen to make us put aside our petty differences and unite as a nation. We should have been united from the start. But regardless now we are united and together we shall overcome this tragedy and once again be triumphant. My friend Katie and I had just got out of gym and were trying to hurry up and get dressed for our 4'th hr. We were late as usual and trying to hurry to class. We went by the locker room office and saw on the TV that some planes had hit the Twin Towers. I just figured it was something that had already happened and that it was just a documentary not knowing that it was happening right now. I asked one of the girls in the room what they were watching and they told me that someone had hijacked two planes and crashed them into the twin towers. They told me that they were American planes. My first thought was "Oh my god Angie." See my cousin Angie is a sturdiest for Spirit Airlines and I was so scared that she had been on one of the planes. As we left all throughout the commons the TVs were turned onto the news. In every classroom we did nothing but listen to the news. I was in 5th hr when I heard about the Pentagon and the other plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. The whole day was just like a bad dream. It just didn't seem real. I still can't believe that it actually happened. It was the most unforgettable day ever!!!!!!! As we were talking the second plane hit, right then I knew, this was an act of war. We have a TV at work and at once we put it on. The horrow was too much. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My husband and I, as well as our three married children and their families are observant Jewish families. We know of world tragedies, as we have lost family in the Holacaust during WW11. We observe a Holacaust Rememberance Day each year on our calandar. To hear the news about the Twin Towers' explosions felt like another overwhelming major disaster of our lifetime, that also struck us so very deeply. Living in Florida, we do not know too many people, except for family in the New York area. Fortunately,we did not really know anyone that worked in the Towers, but did hear stories from friends and neighbors that did have family or friends that perished there! I was very touched by the presentation on the Today Show this morning that commemerated the series of events that led to the deaths of almost three thousand people! Oprah also shared accounts of many families today and how they were coping with life, one year later. It was assuring to hear about the appropriations that will be given to the surviving families in the near future. These monentary compensations will be a small token of consellation for those who have suffered horrendous loses. In closing, our hearts are in sympathy for all those grieving families and pray that the magnitude of this terror will never be repeated! So, I was home on that most horrific of all days. My fianc?, who works evenings, was downstairs watching the Today Show. Suddenly, I was interrupted from my chores by his screaming that a plane had just crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. I ran downstairs and the two of us were standing about a foot from the television. We witnessed, live on television, the second plane hitting the other tower. Mark, a Marine Corps veteran, looked at me and said, "we've just been attacked". We sat there, watching the coverage and all I could say was, "what about all those people?" I could not imagine such horror and that was before the attack on the Pentagon, before flight 93 was heroically brought down in Shanksville, PA., and before the Twin Towers collapsed. I knew then that our world was forever changed. After watching the TV coverage (and crying) for awhile, I called my mother. I then learned that one of my brothers flew out of Boston around 8:00 A.M. that morning. It would be a few agonizing hours before we knew he was alright. Greg's flight was forced to land in Peoria, IL. Returning to Ohio proved to be quite a task for him. He told me that he says a prayer before each flight but that on 9/11, his prayer was, for reasons unknown to him at the time, a psalm. He also said he didn't think he ever knew that psalm by heart. Later, my family would worry some more. My brother, Chris, is a captain in the U.S. Navy and could have been at the Pentagon that day as he is currently working in Washington D.C. I feel truly blessed that both my brothers are alive and well! My heart still aches for all those people who lost loved ones on that awful day. September 11 is Mark's birthday. He and his twin brother, Mike, also a Marine Corps veteran, will never again celebrate their birthdays in the ways they have in years past. Mark had waited until the last minute to re-new his driver's license. While we were at the license bureau, I went outside to call my mom again to see if she had heard anything about my brothers. I kept seeing planes above and only later realized that it was because nationwide, pilots in the sky were ordered to land at the nearest, available airport and we are very close to the Akron/Canton Airport. I learned later that it was only about five planes which were forced to land at Akron/Canton Airport, but at the time, it seemed like a lot more. I cannot imagine what it must be like for those in New York, Washington, Pennsylvania and for the loved ones of all those aboard the fated flights, to hear the roar of an airplane overhead. An airplane flying in a clear blue sky will forever bring on the same flood of emotions, for the skies here that day were just as blue. Even a clear blue sky, in and of itself, now takes on new meaning for me. For days after the attack, I felt incredible grief, anger and even guilt. I questioned God even as I prayed for the souls lost, prayed that survivors be found, and prayed for an end to hatred and evil, especially of this magnitude. I have a brilliant sixteen-year old daughter and I wish she did not have to live in a world where such evil is possible. In the days following our worst moments, for the most part, we saw the very best of humanity, the very best of America. We also saw that some people will try to profit from even the most evil of deeds. Right here, in N. Canton, OH., a man lied, saying he lost a loved one in NYC. He was caught and hopefully, the countless donations he received from generous co-workers were re-paid. We are still the greatest nation in the world. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11,2001, I was dropping my kids off at school when the school secretary told everyone in the office that a plane hit the twin towers. I thought surely it was a horrible accident. I was saddened for a few minutes thinking to myself that several people must be hurt...or possibly dead. I got in my car and went back home. My raidio was not on , so I heard nothing else about it until a friend of mine called and said "are you watching this?". I didn't know what he meant. He told me the channel to turn to (which at the time was just about any one on the air)and he began to tell me the story when the second plane hit. I said "WOW, what movie is this? What great special effects!!!" He yelled at me "This is real!!!" I could not believe what I was seeing. Then the report of the Pentagon being hit came over the news.I didn't know how to feel. I felt so guilty over the next few days because I just wasn't as emotional about it as the rest of the country seemed to be. Living in Houston and watching this happen in New York on television really made it seem like another country or like it just wasn't real. A few weeks later I started seeing people on T.V. talking about people they lost, showing pictures of firefighters, husbands and wives, police officers and so many other innocent people that lost their lives. The feeling of unity among people I had never met before but walked past every day ,was overwhelming. I have always believed that everything happens for a reason, no matter how terrible they seem at the time, we have to look for the greater message. This country showed the whole world what it takes to exist in a country full of diversity. We rush around living our lives everyday without looking up to see what is right in front of us...WoW!!What a wake up call!! Look at all the good people around us!!!We have learned a huge lesson!! I will never take any person or opportunity for granted again!! What if it's gone tommorrow?
